“Humans are designed to share, connect, and relate, and I realized how many stories I had kept hidden and people I had protected from fear or shame for so long,” she told Vogue. “I was anonymous or gave myself a few pseudonyms so as not to be vulgar, while still sharing my truth. But the first draft that only I saw, though…” For anyone who grew up in the early 2000s, when Levesque first rose to fame, the book is filled with nostalgic touches. She details how she didn’t want “Leave (Get Out)” to be her debut single, calling the hit “some Disney Channel shit.” She also recounts the time she co-hosted Total Request Live and had a bad experience with an unnamed female pop singer (who may or may not have been C*ristina A*uilera…).

Levesque similarly examines her complicated relationship with her parents and her struggles with alcoholism and substance abuse. Reading through the various personal and professional hurdles she's had to overcome her former record label blocking her from releasing any new music for over a decade, her father's death from an opioid overdose, one romantic betrayal after another it's clear how lucky Levesque feels to still be here, releasing music. The memoir, as well as her stunning new single "Porcelain," are both testaments to her remarkable resilience and her refusal to let anyone dictate how she uses her unique voice.

“Revisiting some of the devastating moments I had cataloged was really cathartic and necessary. I didn’t realize how much I had been trying to avoid feeling,” Levesque reflects. “Almost all of my fears, insecurities, and flaws are out there now, so they don’t have any power.” To celebrate the release of Over the Influence, Levesque took six days off from her starring role in Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Broadway to visit six bookstores across the country and shared some exclusive photos with Vogue of her life on the road.
