It’s no secret that Indigenous representation in mainstream Hollywood has been lacking, though recent projects such as Prey and Reservation Dogs have brought Native talent to the forefront. So to see not one, but several Indigenous stars take over the Cannes Film Festival’s red carpet this weekend has been thrilling. Better yet, many of the cast members have been using their opportunity to highlight Indigenous designers too, bringing a dash of cultural flair through their intentional fashion choices.

In 2015, a group of women were reportedly turned away from a screening of Carol at Cannes because they were wearing flat shoes, an incident that thrust the festival’s somewhat antiquated dress code into the spotlight. Festival director Thierry Fremaux insisted at the time that high-heels were not mandatory for women walking the red carpet, but it was widely acknowledged as an unspoken (and sexist) rule at the event. In 2016, Julia Roberts famously took to the Croisette barefoot, while Conversations with Friends actor Sasha Lane followed suit at a photo call that same year. “The carpet was for our film and I was dressed in a very elegant gown and there’s a ton of stairs, and I’m walking around all day… so I will go barefoot,” Lane explained in an interview two years later. “Why is anyone against that? I’m still here and well-dressed.”

Not too long ago, the Cannes Film Festival had a strict red carpet rule: No flat shoes. The festival’s longstanding requirement stated that women must wear heels, but in recent years many stars have rebuked the idea that formal dress must include stilettos. In 2018, for instance, Kristen Stewart famously kicked off her sky-high Christian Louboutin stilettos, and walked the step and repeat barefoot. “I feel like you can’t ask people that any more,” Stewart said in 2017. “If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either.” While the shoe rule is no longer in effect it quietly dissolved sometime after 2018 leave it to a style icon like Isabelle Huppert to bring back the debate on red carpet appropriate footwear this weekend.
