For those with thick hair, “part the hair so that the scalp can reach and the serum can reach the skin if the goal is to grow hair, because the product needs to come into direct contact with the scalp to be absorbed and reach the root of the hair follicle,” says Dr. Shaver. While many products have a nozzle that applies through the hair, some droppers don’t do that exactly. Finally, if you’re applying a hair growth serum at night, consider your skin type as some ingredients, like oils, are more likely to stick to your pillowcase and transfer to your skin. “For sensitive or acne-prone skin, changing your pillowcase frequently or wearing a shower cap after applying the serum can be helpful,” she says.

As with any product, consistency is key to seeing (and maintaining) long-term results. For that reason, Mirimani recommends using minoxidil daily. However, “as with any new product, you should read the manufacturer’s instructions for how often to use it and how much to use,” Shaver adds. They can work, with some caveats. It’s important to choose your products carefully. “I’m generally skeptical of products that promise a lot of benefits but don’t provide good scientific
evidence to back up their claims,” says Dr. Mirmirani. “Some hair growth serums show promise, but most don’t provide strong evidence for me to recommend them to my patients.”

The most important step is to test your serum before using it for the first time. “Apply the serum to a small spot on your scalp for a few days to make sure there’s no irritation before applying it more widely,” says Dr. Mirmirani. “A moderate approach is best.” To that end, get comfortable with the fact that you’ll need to be consistent and patient with your use, as results can take time. As for the application itself, apply the hair growth serum to a clean scalp (though this may vary depending on the specific product). Ideally, do this on slightly damp hair, as this “can help disperse the product on the scalp and make it more porous and enhance absorption,” says Dr. Shaver. (However, she notes that an overly wet scalp will dilute your serum and potentially reduce its effectiveness.)
