This is why I find myself dismayed when accusations of bias surface again most recently from the mouths of race-baiting politicians. How can we be surprised when we are once again the target of ridicule and xenophobia? When you have been taught this kind of disrespect from a young age, you are less susceptible to false claims steeped in anti-black and anti-immigrant prejudice. The message was always clear that Haitians were unwanted immigrants to American culture. We have since learned not to attach our self-worth to false notions about our own people.

There were thirds and fourths: my brilliant grandmother was maligned for her accent; my math genius was a father who got a perfect score on the math SAT and was asked to retake the test. (He got a perfect score the second time, too.) The underestimation and misunderstanding of Haitians was nothing new to me. That we were somehow a stain on the fabric of America was an old myth that haunted me throughout my childhood as a first-generation Haitian-American. It was exhausting. It was exhausting. And utterly demeaning to justify and value our humanity.

But then there is danger. There are consequences to misinformation. Just as it is an insult to our dignity to respond to offensive lies, it is also an insult to our lives to let them go unaddressed. We are always on the defensive. Anyone can make up whatever they want, but we are responsible for refuting them. Otherwise, we are more vulnerable to physical attacks and hate crimes. No matter how helpful or beneficial we are to our communities, we can be slandered at any time, and our lives depend on correcting the narrative.
