“In bringing this family story to life, I have never lost the sense of my family connection to the work,” Kazan told Netflix in a statement accompanying the announcement. “But it was Steinbeck’s writing personal, shocking, profound and free that has captivated me since I first read the book as a teenager. Working on this work has been the greatest joy.” Maggie Smith has died at the age of 89, her family confirmed. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dame Maggie Smith,” her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin wrote in a statement. “She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27 September. A very private person, she was surrounded by friends and family. She leaves behind two sons and five loving grandchildren, who are all devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”

Smith won two Oscars during her illustrious career for 1970's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and 1979's California Suite along with four more Academy Award nominations, not to mention five BAFTAs. Before she was sweeping awards season, however, Smith was a fairy-tale British talent who made her name on the West End stage. The Essex-born actress began her career as Viola in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night at the Oxford Playhouse, where she learned her craft. It was the beginning of a love affair with the Bard that would last for decades: she played Desdemona in Othello (and earned her first Oscar nomination for her performance in the 1965 film adaptation) and played Queen Elizabeth, Lady Macbeth, and Cleopatra on stage in the late '70s.

But her career wasn’t all theatrical classics. Smith appeared in comedies, Merchant Ivory classics and commercial hits like the Harry Potter series, not to mention some chilling 90s classics, including The First Wives Club and Sister Act. During her 70 years in the spotlight, there was no genre she couldn’t conquer or emotion she couldn’t capture. One of Britain’s most beloved and celebrated actresses, Smith made her film debut in the 1950s, appearing alongside George Nader in 1959’s Nowhere to Go.
