Leave it to the British to do folk horror right. Starve Acre, a beautifully shot, eerily moody film set in the bleak Yorkshire moors of the 1970s, has you covered: a deserted farmhouse; creepy locals in oversized sweaters; a young couple, played by Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark, caught up in a demonic curse and driven insane. It probably wouldn’t work as well without the committed, nuanced performances of Smith and Clark, who look like they’ve been plucked straight out of a ’70s time machine. They lose their young son early in the film, and their grief drives them to obsessive behavior even as the wildlife on their property starts acting strangely. Creepy and slightly insane, it’s a film worth watching late at night. TA

The setting may seem predictable (an isolated house in Ireland, a nearby mental institution), but Oddity packs a steady stream of scares and witty storytelling into its short running time that feels unique and fresh. Oddity is the second feature from Damian McCarthy, an Irish writer-director who is obsessed with dark hallways and building tension at every turn. We should avoid giving away the plot of the film, but suffice it to say that Oddity opens with a doctor's wife from a nearby facility sleeping alone in her home. She is visited by one of his patients, who desperately
begs to be let in. Her choice of whether or not to open the door sets off a slightly crazy story involving her blind, telepathic sister; haunted artifacts; and a central supernatural mystery that comes to a brutal end. TA

A funny and poignant crowd favorite that first made a splash at Sundance, the debut feature from talented young director Sean Wang is the coming-of-age story of a 13-year-old TaiwaneseAmerican boy growing up in early 2000s Fremont, California. The joy of Didi lies in the specifics skateboard culture, Myspace, pop-punk music and in the painful experiences of flirting, making and losing friends, and fighting with family, all of which stem from a boy's desperate need to belong.
