Inspired by '90s gothic horror films like Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs, Osgood Perkins's shocking and periodically unsettling mood piece is a clever example of occult horror escapism. Maika Monroe, in a carefully calibrated performance, elevates her role as the film's protagonist, an FBI agent investigating a series of mysterious murders in the dark, forested Pacific Northwest. And by now, you've probably heard of Nicolas Cage in the lead role. Put simply, he's one of the strangest and most terrifying movie monsters I've seen in a while glam-rock weird, gravelly-
voiced, and demonically possessed. The entire film is dark and brutal, with plot twists that make this a film about family secrets and the relationship between parents and children. TA
There's an art to making a popcorn movie, and Twisters is a masterclass. State-of-the-art special effects? Check. Super-attractive leads with chemistry whether they want it or not? Check. (Glenn Powell may have even invented the quirky dreamer trope.) A survival plot with a subtle redemption arc? Check. Many of the films on this list will go on to win Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes; Twisters probably won't be among them. But, when you sit down to watch Glenn Powell in a cowboy hat drive a pickup truck full throttle across the Oklahoma Plains, you'll realize this is the most fun you've had at a movie in years.
