This week, I traveled to Washington, DC, to celebrate the nonprofit Reproductive Freedom for All (RFFA) now in its milestone 55th year and its president and CEO, Mini Timmaraju. Mini is an absolute force and a true hero of mine. Since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, she has been a mentor and a co-defendant in the fight to protect and advance reproductive freedom. During my visit, RFFA also honored me with its Rising Reproductive Freedom Champion award (with a clear emphasis on the word “rising”!) an incredible honor that I accept as an acknowledgement of our continuing responsibility and a call to unite to do more.

There are certainly many reasons for the gender gap, but one reason is certainly that young women are simply more motivated than ever. Why? Perhaps because, for the first time in a
generation, reproductive rights are on the federal ballot. As we enter the final stretch of the campaign, be careful, and every day counts, and dynamics can change quickly. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for October 1, the first and only vice presidential debate between Governor Tim Walz and Senator JD Vance. I’ll be watching, so as always, stay tuned for more!

Liberty has always been a core value in American society but with the Dobbs decision, it was denied to an entire generation. As another hero of mine, my mother, Melinda French Gates, said at the time, “Be angry. Be angry. But ask yourself: What are you going to do about it?” Since then, I have engaged with experts and invested in organizations and activists working on this issue. In a room filled with 200 other reproductive rights advocates including elected officials, activists, and representatives from partner organizations Kimberly Peeler-Allen, RFFA board chair and an inspirational leader who has worked at the intersection of race, gender, and politics for more than 20 years, joined me on stage to speak, as did Representative Ruben Gallego, who is running for Senate in Arizona (one of 10 abortion-legal states on the ballot this November).
