For Gohar, part of this increased interest in tableware can be attributed to the pandemic. “With Covid, everyone was at home and not spending on clothes, so people started spending more on the house, and that never went away,” she says. Elhanati, meanwhile, sees an inherent connection between food and jewelry. “Both are deeply sensual experiences that involve pleasure,” she says. “So why settle for something ordinary when you can have something extraordinary?”
The elevation of cutlery to the realm of refined aesthetics seems to have gone hand in hand with the rise of food artists like Laila Gohar, who use the table setting as a backdrop to create culinary trompe l’oeil. While some of the edible installations Gohar has created for the likes of Simone Rocha, Hermès, and Valentino think a sofa made of bread or a champagne jelly made from koi fish stuffed with roses might recall Dalí’s dreamy dinner parties, Gohar herself resists easy comparisons. “I don’t necessarily identify myself as a Surrealist because my inspiration comes from so many different places,” she says. “I have a hard time with labels because I work in a multidisciplinary way.” In 2022, Gohar and her sister Nadia launched a playful homeware brand,
Gohar World, featuring chandeliers designed to hold eggs, swan-shaped lemon squeezers, and hand-carved mother-of-pearl cutlery made by a family workshop in Vietnam.
