One Day With the rapid development of science and technology, the pollution of e-waste is endangering the natural environment in a new situation and impacting the physical and mental health of human beings. Human beings lack of attention to environmental protection and only pay attention to short-term interests, so they fall into the inevitable crisis of modernity.

Therefore, I imagine that in the future, e-waste harms all aspects of human life and affects people's living patterns and states. I produced a set of publication designs about environmental testing reports, and a concept film called a day in the life of 2200, imagining the environmental crisis in the post-human era, thus alerting people to the current e-waste pollution problem.

The centrality of humanity, the core of humanism, has been severely challenged.

As the product of human science and technology civilization, electronic products have been widely popularized and used in the 21st century.

The mind and mind become numb and empty The virtual digital garbage generated by electronic products also has a negative psychological impact on people: data that is no longer used: discarded emails, unused installation packages, automatically cached videos, duplicate files...

It brings great trouble to people, causes serious waste of resources and endangers social order.When too much digital garbage is involved in human life, it will lead to the decline of the freedom and security of the subject, the loss of the security of life, and even psychological problems.

Therefore, we should be alert to the current potential threats, pay attention to environmental protection issues, and avoid the occurrence of tragedies.

Therefore, I decided to design a publication to directly address the dangers of e-waste, shoot a concept film about it, and design a street performance to expand the impact.

Design lens language and shooting, and write story content: tell the impact of e-waste on people by telling the daily life and office of human beings in the future.

During the performance, I prepared a huge foam board as a venue, and when the props were in place and the actors were in place, the whole environment itself looked like a huge circuit board.

Outcome：Book Design

① My publication is based on a vision of the future, imagining the human environment more than 100 years in the future, for which I did a report on e-waste detection.

The report consists of three books of different sizes, the first of which is titled 《Environmental Protection Daily》 and deals with the future of e-waste journalism.

② The second book“Appendix Examples and Analysis,”lists and analyzes some examples in detail to serve as a supplementary illustration.

③ The main test report is divided into two parts, describing the extent of e-waste hazards in the future from an environmental and psychological perspective. The three books together form a complete test report.

Publications have no fixed binding form and are as unstructured and difficult to control as e-waste. I use long tail clips to clamp them together, trying to break the conventional binding form, to express the uncertainty of future things.

My concept film imagines the daily life of human beings in the future, and the images take on a retro futuristic style. It tells the story of People's Daily activities in the context of electronic pollution, such as listening to the news, eating, health testing and working. It uses exaggerated techniques to present the intrusion and impact of e-waste on people's lives, reminding people to pay attention to the current environmental and pollution problems, and preventing the occurrence of tragedies.

Outcome：Performance The performance uses absurd narrative techniques, combines life scenes with street scenes, and shows the scenes of eating, reading and working under the influence of electronic waste in the future. The whole life scene itself is also like a circuit board, trapping the protagonist, creating an atmosphere of isolation, and strengthening the sense of surreal enveloped by electronic waste.

During the performance, many passers-by stopped to admire and discuss the significance of the act. In the future, I will continue to study the direction and form of this kind of creation, and expand the appeal of artistic works.

Party

Influenced by the strict annual restrictions imposed by the Chinese authorities on the management system of artistic creation, I produced a publication, After Party, as a way to reflect on the environment of artistic creation and forms of authoritarian censorship in China.

Book Design/Chair Design/Video

The publication is placed in the context of contemporary China, taking the abandoned clubhouse of Kangcheng as the entry point of scene theory, comparing the ruins to the refuge of artists’ creation, using chairs to metaphor the identity of absent artists, and expressing thoughts on the contemporary art environment.

Inspiration

Research Formerly： From 1989 to 1995, a group of artists from other provinces gathered near the Old Summer Palace in the western suburbs of Beijing, forming the first gathering place for artists in New China and witnessing the rapid process of Chinese contemporary art going international.

In today’s society, art lovers also have their own communication needs, and people love to participate in salon activities and speak freely.

Analyse

Once one of Shanghai’s most famous entertainment venues, the Force Health City clubhouse was abandoned in 2012 and has now become a mecca for photography and wall painting enthusiasts to explore and create, filled with installations and graffiti where authors of different identities can create freely and fully express themselves.

① The environment for artistic creation has changed from free and loose to strict and restrictive.

If the ruins were a grand party that was collapsing, the chairs scattered among the ruins were as much art as the absent artists themselves.

In August 2016, artist Ai Weiwei was excluded from the Yinchuan International Biennale due to the political sensitivity of his personal identity; In September 2022, the film “Hidden in the Dust” was copletely removed from the shelves;

In June 2023, at the site of the Shanghai Art Book Fair, the market supervision department temporarily inspected the books and forced the removal of some exhibits.

Each chair symbolizes a different identity of the subject, fully displaying the individual will.

In November 2022, the organizers of the Shanghai Good Art Festival announced the withdrawal of the exhibition 7 hours after it was launched;

So I decided to make a publication about ruins to expose this phenomenon, to make a chair that represents the artist's personal identity, and to bring more attention to this phenomenon by shooting videos and workshop.

⑤ Plan the script content of the video, bring the produced publications and chairs back to the ruins to shoot, and tell the whole theme.

Outcome:Book Design This book is a collection of six modern poems on the subject of ruins by authors who are both visual descriptors of ruins as well as artists and creators. By making such a book that contains visual elements of ruins and poetry, I metaphorically connect the environment with the subject. The atmosphere of the whole book is quiet and serious, which vaguely reflects the atmosphere of the creative environment.

Outcome:Chair According to the previous publication design, I used the white latex transfer method to make a chair related to the theme, representing the personal identity. The final product has been placed in the ruins, together with other chairs to form the absent artist’s concept.

At the end of the video, the chair serves as a status symbol for the absent artist and eventually returns to the ruins as one of the artworks in the ruins.

Outcome:Workshop In order to attract more people to be aware of the creative environment, I held a workshop on the theme of poetry and designed a set of postcards about ruins and poetry, inviting people to gather here, read and discuss together.

Project 3

Burning

Burning is the practice of burning weeds and shrubs on wasteland before reclamation. In Anhui Province, China, this kind of behavior has become a common phenomenon, which has serious harm to human health and land environment. In combination with the rituals and customs of the local Nuo culture, I decided to hold a ceremony to commemorate the land destroyed in the burning and pray that the burning phenomenon will be suppressed in the future.

Background

Event Land burning is the practice of burning weeds and shrubs on wasteland before reclamation. In order to quickly solve the large area of residues after the autumn harvest, many farmers will burn directly on the spot, and in Anhui Province, China, land burning has become a common phenomenon.

In addition to the harm to the atmospheric environment and human body, the burning of crop residues in the field will lead to the loss of nitrogen, phosphorus, organic matter and heat energy, eliminate beneficial microorganisms in the soil, and cause serious damage to the soil.

In the traditional ceremonies of Nuo culture, many of them are closely related to the land, expressing their attachment to the land, gratitude and awe, offering sacrifices to the deceased relatives, ancestors and gods, and good wishes for the New Year.

Process-Graphic Design

Anhui Nuo Opera has a grand ceremony during the performance, which is divided into the following steps: God of sacrifice Pray Gode Invite to the stage Enshrine and worship

At the most exciting part of the ceremony, sacrificial offerings are prepared around the stage, and performers perform dance rituals according to opera music to comfort the souls of the deceased, pray for good weather in the coming year, and express gratitude to their homeland.

Ritual performance

In the visual production phase, a background flag for the ceremonial event needs to be made first. I used GIS to find the map of the burning area, carried out various stylization processing, and post-processed the photographic pictures.

Analyse

Dynamic Image Anhui Province as my hometown, the activities of burning land repeatedly prohibited.

In order to simulate the fire effect during burning, I made a dynamic image with Touch Designer and used a projector to put it on the ceremony site.

It takes a long time for the land to recover after burning, seriously damaging the productivity and efficiency of the land.

In Nuo culture, there are specific customs and dances to perform rituals

Therefore, I decided to use traditional ritual customs to pay homage to the land destroyed in the fire and express my condolences to the land

After many visual attempts, I decided to use black and white color matching as the main style and gradual change as the auxiliary form to show the map of the land destroyed in the burning, and listed some cities where major burning accidents had occurred.

The images produce changes in shape and color based on what the computer's camera captures.

To make it easier to burn, the shape needs to be cut first.

Choreography

Using the wood from the burning and mountain fires as a recording tool, the laser engraving technology was used to carve 7 burning events in my hometown on the wood.

The design of these dances and venues is inspired by the ritual dances of traditional Nuo culture.

Secondly, the edges and parts of the material are burned to create an irregular texture effect.

The wood is burned as a whole to create a large area of texture effect, and then the details are carved.

Garment Making According to local customs, the performance costumes were black, and the elements of burning were added.

With the flag as the central background, the surrounding wood blocks and candles are placed in a circle to recreate a simple ceremony scene.

The makeup is inspired by the color and texture of the burn.

Finally, arrange for the dancers to rehearse before the formal event.

Outcome：Experimental Printing Each cliff cypress corresponds to a major burning event. I put them together, collected the land in the burning as the background, and formed a display scene with candles.

Brain Development Guide

Under the current mode of visual communication education in colleges and universities, a value emphasizing perseverance, devaluing free exploration and questioning, independent thinking has gradually formed and been strengthened in our consciousness, and the value of free innovation and reflection has been largely submerged or ignored. After a long period of learning and training, the organless brain will eventually become a homogenized brain, like the product on the assembly line, through unified arrangement, production, processing, flow to the next production link.

So I created a book installation called The Brain Cultivation Guide consisting of a book, a conveyor belt, a writing machine, a display screen, and fluid images. Through the combination of the first perspective and the third perspective, it tells the changes of the protagonist’s processing as a commodity, and the growth and development of the brain in this process, so as to reflect on and criticize the current mode of visual communication education in colleges and universities.

Background Since entering college, I have studied mechanically according to the goals set by the school. After graduation, I found that both the needs of society and the operational evaluation mechanism are leading us to replace thinking and independent innovation with the single repetitive operation of machines.

Research In this context, the major of visual communication also continues the indoctrination teaching method, emphasizing the learning of theoretical knowledge and the cultivation of design creativity.

Therefore, our study and practice are separated, confusion, anxiety, confusion has become the psychological normal of students.

For a long time, in the consciousness of college students, it is difficult for individuals to have the opportunity to fully examine and reflect on the situation. A value that emphasized perseverance, devalued free inquiry and questioning, and independent thought developed and was reinforced, placing diligence as the most important quality, while the values of free innovation and reflection were largely drowned out or ignored.

Theory “Organless body” is a post-structuralist concept put forward by contemporary French philosopher Deleuze and psychoanalyst Gattali. Since the organless body is a process of constant change and evolution, and has similarities with the human brain in terms of operation, thinking, growth, etc., under the influence of the drawbacks of college design education, the organless brain will eventually become a homogenized brain.

In this process, the brain is like the product on the assembly line, after unified arrangement, production, processing, flow to the next production link, individual creativity is weakened, and the homogenization process is significantly accelerated.

According to the previous background and theory, I directly and indirectly investigated the current situation of visual communication education in colleges and universities from the following aspects.

Process

Reference Taking the advertisement design competition of college students as an example, the works show the characteristics of similar style and strong sense of decoration, and lack of new ideas in design. The style homogeneity of design competition will also lead students to imitate and adapt to a single style pattern.

Based on research and storylines, I experimented with a lot of styles.

At the same time, the method of wet extension painting is used to show the neuronal growth of each process in detail.

I abstract the changes of thinking and growth of the brain in the process of education into the process of neuron growth, and use Touch Designer to simulate the dynamic effect video of brain nerve movement as the third perspective of the audience.

Analyse With the deepening of my undergraduate study, I took myself and my classmates around me as samples to observe their changes.

Many people gradually give up their goals and plans when they enroll, and gradually become learning machines that conform to the university education system, like goods processed on an assembly line.

In order to express the changes and feelings of the subject in this process, I use the way of film narration to tell this story.

In terms of visual output, the book tells the personal experience from the first-person perspective, while the installation, motion and fluid paintings use the third-person perspective.

The two perspectives tell the theme together and reflect the inner heart of the protagonist.

The initial state of the book is a continuous roll of pages, while reading, the scroll will be opened, like a movie to tell the main character’s journey in sequence.I put the book in a college classroom to shoot, implying that the story begins and ends here.

Outcome：Devices and video The device consists of a book, a conveyor belt, a writing machine, a display screen and a fluid picture. The book symbolizes the first perspective of the protagonist, who is in a mechanical learning environment and is processed like an assembly line product. The fluid part symbolizes the audience’s third perspective, viewing the growth and change process of the brain in education from the perspective of a bystander. The process of repeated writing on the scripter represents the process of the protagonist’s experience, while the screen uses technology to demonstrate the growth of neurons in the brain. In the process of watching, the audience can intuitively feel the subjective and objective changes of the subject in the environment.

The video captures the entire operation process and visual effect of the device. The device keeps moving for a long time, which indicates that education has a long-term and lasting influence on people, and also indicates that the changes of neurons are a slow and continuous process.

In today's society, the living environment of mental patients is very bad, and the mood is very lonely and painful. By playing the role of a mental patient and experiencing life in a hospital, I began to think from the perspective of the patient and expose this phenomenon by making a documentary to guide the audience to think about the living environment of vulnerable groups. The window of the hospital represents isolation and imprisonment, and the documentary is divided into two parts: the female ward and the intensive care unit. The documentary is mainly based on visual pictures, combined with some real scenes and dialogues, to show the unknown side behind the window.

Background

Research

Mental illness is a common phenomenon in modern society, according to a mental health study conducted by psychologists from 2016 to 2018, 1 in 7 people have experienced mental disorders, and nearly 70% of the respondents believe that mental illness is still stigmatized, society still has prejudice against mental illness, and the medical environment for patients needs to be improved.

Hospitals, as places to treat diseases and help patients recover, often detain, imprison and beat without reason, and the lack of caring medical means brings pain to patients, which is not conducive to the progress of scientific and medical work.

According to the feedback of the patients, I decided to play a patient in the Huaibei Mental Health Center to experience the feeling of a hospital stay.

Through sharing meals, activities, rest and chat with patients, I found that patients did not have basic freedom, they were detained in fixed places every day, and their every move was monitored by people. Many patients live very depressed and lonely lives and often miss their families. Such a mental state is not conducive to the recovery of the disease.

During my stay in the hospital, I noticed that each department was isolated by huge bars, severely restricting the movement of patients.

Windows are the medium of communication, through which people gain insight into society, but also pay attention to the experience that Windows give people and the problems that they bring to society. In the hospital environment, the prejudices of society and the status quo of the mentally ill community extend beyond the bars.

Therefore, with the consent of the hospital and the patient, I reflected the current situation of the patient's life in the hospital by shooting a documentary, leading the audience to understand and reflect on the situation of the patient's life.

I was in the mixed ward for a few days, and someone was crying so loud in the middle of the night, I couldn't sleep at all. Many have been forced to come here by their families and are not allowed to make noise, or they will be dragged out for sedation or electrotherapy.

Documentary My documentary is divided into two parts, the female ward and the intensive care unit, mainly with visual pictures, combined with some real scenes and dialogues, to show the daily life of psychiatric patients in hospital.

At the beginning of the documentary, the doctor in the mental hospital opens the iron door, which is shaped like a huge window, and the story begins here; At the end of the documentary, I look out the window of the hospital, implying that I think about their living environment from the perspective of the patients. The window represents isolation and imprisonment. The people inside the window live a miserable life, and the people outside the window hardly notice this phenomenon.

At present, my works are limited to focusing on this phenomenon, photographing and exposing this social problem. In the future research stage, I hope that more people can think about the situation of vulnerable groups, and continue to discuss how to help them improve their living conditions, contribute love and shoulder social responsibilities.

In recent years, with the rampant phenomenon of “soft pornography” on the Internet and the intensification of the sexualization trend of media, exposure to soft pornography will affect children’s physical and mental health and the establishment of a complete personality.

My works try to use web pages and model design to appeal and warn more parents with children to pay attention to this problem, and better educate and protect their children. At the same time, the dark net plate warns criminals through viral marketing, and the animation tries to remind and improve this social problem from multiple levels by exposing the sexualized children’s industrial chain of the dark net.

Background

The dangers of sexualizing children： ——Film Lolita,1962 Many children unwittingly and involuntarily become the protagonists of soft porn marketing chains.

In China, most families are relatively traditional and avoid discussing issues related to sex, considering the subject sensitive and useless. The current situation of family sex education is not optimistic.

In 2017, the national Children’s car model runway competition was reported by the masses because children were wearing too exposed and dancing poses were too sexy.
