BELLA’S COFFEE MORNING Much to my relief, Sat 27th August dawned bright and sunny after watching the weather forecast change constantly over the days before. Our coffee morning became a garden party with everyone enjoying the sunshine and good company. We were amazed to raise the fantastic sum of £1,136 for the ‘Saving Bella Morris’ fund. Many thanks to those who came and supported this worthy cause, donated prizes and helped out on the day. A final very special thank you to Ian Collinson and David Coggin of Cycle Aid for their most generous donation. Julie Speed 07961 310 471

THE PLEASANT GUILD The Guild meetings continue at 2:30pm on Wednesdays throughout the month in the Methodist Hall with many interesting speakers. Everybody very welcome. Dorothy Bray (01253) 810015

DOWN TO EARTH Hands up if you remembered to sow your pumpkin seeds in May? Me neither. In my defence (and probably yours) pumpkins do need a lot of space and my tardiness means that farmers benefit from the annual retail craze. Although pumpkins are indigenous to the western hemisphere they were completely unknown in Europe before the time of Columbus. In 1584, the French explorer Jacques Cartier reported from the recently discovered Americas that he had found ‘gros melons’ (no sniggering at the back) which was translated into English as ‘ponpions,’ or pumpkins. In fact, pumpkins have been grown in America for over 5,000 years and Native Americans called them ‘isquotersquash’. Many of us mistake pumpkins for vegetables – actually they’re a fruit and like gourds,

and other varieties of squash, they are all members of the Cucurbitacae family, which also includes cucumbers, gherkins, and melons. As you know we share our lives with two small curious humans who shortly will begin to test our patience and knowledge with repeatedly asking ‘why’. It’s actually an annoying trait I’ve never grown out of and it occurred to me that I’d forgotten why we carve out pumpkins every Halloween. (When I was a kid we used turnips. My mother developed the arms of a body builder scooping out the inside – I’m pretty sure this is why we adopted the American’s far more sensible use of soft fruit). Halloween is based on an ancient Celtic holiday known as Samhain or ‘Summer’s End’. It was the end of the Celtic year, starting

DOWN TO EARTH (cont) at sundown on October 31st and going through to sundown November 1st. It was a night to honour loved ones who had died as the veil between their realm and ours was (presumably still is?) at its thinnest on that night. So on this magical evening, glowing jacko-lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, were set on porches and in windows to welcome deceased loved ones, but also to act as protection against malevolent spirits. Burning lumps of coal were placed inside as a source of light – we later replaced the coal with candles.

meantime I’ll trot off to the shops to buy one of the ten million pumpkins grown in the UK every year. There are of course ten million things that need doing in the garden at this time of year. Remember to care for your lawn by raking or brushing leaves off the grass. Try collecting them in a leaf bag, which will turn them into useful leaf mould. You can also cut the grass for one last time this year. Make that last cut slightly higher to protect the lawn from winter frost.

It was when European settlers, particularly the Irish, arrived in America they found the native pumpkin to be larger, easier to carve and seemed the perfect choice for jack-olanterns.

October’s the time for clearing up. Greenhouses, ponds, gutters and water butts may all need cleaning out, wooden garden furniture will need covering or storing for the winter and terracotta pots will need bringing inside.

So maybe next year I’ll find the time, space and inclination to grow one but in the

In the veg patch plant garlic cloves with their pointed ends up, and spaced 10cm apart.

DOWN TO EARTH (cont) Plant out spring bedding and biennials, such as wall-flowers, for spring displays. Pots and hanging baskets can be planted with spring bedding, and teamed with bulbs, grasses, cyclamen and violas for a colourful and textural display. So that’s October sorted – and make the most of it as the shops will have us panicking about Christmas next month. Happy Gardening! Alison Tarpey-Black (01253) 810039 / 07738515846

FASTING FOR HEALTH Did you know that your body uses enormous amounts of energy to digest food and cleanse your body. One estimate I have heard is that 70% of your energy goes into the digestive system! However, we can harness all this energy to aid our health by having a fast. When was the last time you had a day where you did not eat anything? For many of us the answer will be that we cannot remember a day where we did not eat something. Perhaps a few of us will have had a day off food when we have been ill but outside of that it is a rare occurrence. Yet fasting has been shown to have a profoundly positive affect on our health. There are two main ways to try a fast – the first is to take a whole day off every now and again to allow the body to cleanse. I would strongly recommend this if you have an attack of gout – in simple terms gout is a symptom of an overtaxed system where

28

excess acid becomes crystallised by your body and deposited in peripheral joints to avoid our organs becoming damaged! What a clever thing our body is to do such a thing – even if it causes excruciating gouty pain it is actually keeping us alive! So step one in dealing with acute gout is to stop taxing your system by drinking lots of water and not eating food. This approach is also key to beginning to make changes to arthritic pain too. The other way of trying a fast is called ‘Intermittent fasting’. This means you only eat food during an eight hour period of the day. Outside this eight hours you do not eat any food, thus, if you start eating at 10:00am you will not eat a single thing after 6:00pm. Simple! There are many well documented healthy effects of fasting – whilst refraining from food your blood insulin levels drop which aids fat

Growth hormone (known as the anti ageing hormone) levels increase which is. The body begins cellular repair including the removal of waste from cells. In addition, genes and molecules that are involved in longevity and that protect you from disease see beneficial changes. Intermittent fasting helps you eat less food whilst allowing your metabolism to increase, thus is very effective for getting rid of belly fat. It also reduces blood sugar levels which helps anyone with Type 2 Diabetes. It also has a good effective on inflammation

We also know that intermittent fasting prevents cancer in animal studies – human studies need to be done but I would suggest it will help in humans too. Amazingly it also encourages the growth of new neurons in your brain and seems to have a protective effect against Alzheimer’s disease. So what have you to lose people? Other than inches from your waist you have everything to gain by using such a simple yet powerful technique. Give it a go. Nick Tofalos

The Horn Section gave an unusual arrangement for brass of the adagio from Winter, which forms part of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons suite.

He decided against using Mo Farrah as a pace maker as this was his first attempt at a half-marathon and didn’t want to end up needing medical attention himself!

One piece which impressed several people was the very moving ‘Hymn to the Fallen’ which is taken from the sound track of the film ‘Saving Private Ryan’. The band was welcomed by Graham Curwen who spoke warmly of the part that the band plays in the local community. STALMINE PARISH NEWS Playing Field Hedge The Parish Council is to ask Wyre Juniors and Wyre Villa to reinstate the concrete fence panel and the hedge which was taken out to provide access to the playing field earlier this year. Whilst the gap was made to prevent children having to walk via the car park, there is already a gate between the two areas further down the playing field. Speeding on Carr End Lane LCC has confirmed that it will not put in place any measures to curb speeding on Carr End Lane as there is no history of accidents there which would indicate an underlying road safety problem. In their view traffic using the lane is local (as opposed to through traffic) and the soft verges, narrowing width and a bend mean that traffic speeds are likely to be reduced and not excessive.

STALMINE PARISH NEWS (cont) Bin Replaced at the Children’s Play Area

Date and Time of Next Meeting

The bin was removed by Wyre Council when the play area was refurbished and, as a result, there was an increase in litter in the area and dog walkers had nowhere to deposit their dogs’ ‘deposits’. At the request of the Parish Council the bin has now been replaced.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on Tues 11th Oct at 7:00pm.

Pedestrian Crossing In the continuing bid to secure a pedestrian crossing for the village the Parish Council arranged a meeting with Ben Wallace MP and County Councillor Vivien Taylor. The meeting, which took place on Fri 16 Sept, was also attended by a number of Stalmine Beavers who are working towards their World Challenge Award. The Beavers stressed how important a crossing was for the safety of all pedestrians. Mr Wallace gave a commitment to support the Parish Council in its efforts to secure a crossing.

PREESALL TOWN COUNCIL NEWS A Message from the Mayor Firstly, I would like to say how delighted and excited I am to be the Mayor for the civic year 2016/17. It is a great pleasure and privilege to serve the communities of Preesall and Knott End in this prominent role. The Town Council considers that consultation is an important part of finding out what local residents think about local issues. From time to time, the Council aims to engage with residents on various matters to help obtain feedback and use this along with other information to help decision making. There is currently an enormous public focus on the centenary period of the First World War - 4th Aug 2014 until 11th Nov 2018. The country is being reminded over these four years of the sacrifice of the nation, which brought personal loss to almost every family in the land. Indeed our own war memorial

34

bears the names of 33 individuals who died in the service of their country during the Great War and Preesall Cemetery contains five Commonwealth war graves. 11th Nov 2018 will be the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice. The Town Council would like to commemorate this event and would welcome your ideas for commemorating the end of the Great War. Preesall and Knott End residents are therefore encouraged to submit their proposals/ideas to the Clerk. Road Worries Councillors are fighting for better road surfaces in Preesall and Knott End after learning that some cyclists and motorcyclists no longer visit the area because of damage caused to their bikes and a fear of injury. Concerned about the harmful effect on the local economy, Councillors plan to meet County Highways representatives to seek

PREESALL TOWN COUNCIL (cont) prompt and effective repairs and draw lost visitors back. Buses Boost The 2c bus service between Knott End and Blackpool is to resume running on bank holidays after representations to Blackpool Transport. The first such service will be on Tues 27th Dec and although the timetable is yet to be fixed, it is expected to run every two hours until the evening, to fit in with hospital visiting times. Passenger levels will be closely monitored and insufficient take-up will threaten the service. Efforts to reinstate the Sunday service continue. Best Kept Village Success Preesall and Knott End has been honoured in this year’s contest, finishing runner-up in the Best Kept Large Village category. Grateful thanks go to all volunteers who worked hard to keep the village looking attractive.

Parking Dangers Parking problems outside the former Saracen’s Head pub are set to be eased after the County Council indicated that it supports the introduction of double yellow lines. Increased roadside and pavement parking in the area is thought to cause risk to road users and pedestrians, but delays of 12 to 15 months in introducing yellow lines concerned Councillors, who agreed to contact the County Council to try to bring the work forward. Date of Next Meeting Mon 10th Oct - 7:00pm in the Youth and Community Centre, Lancaster Road, Preesall. Alison gave members an illustrated talk on ‘The History of Women in Gardening’. She noted that from early drawings, it is obvious that women were pivotal to gardening, growing vegetables and herbs which would be used for both flavouring and medicinal purposes. In the 17th and 18th Centuries it was some women, who married wealthy husbands with large estates, who became enthusiastic plant collectors. The Duchess of Beaufort, whose husband inherited Badminton, collected thousands of seeds. By the 1700s, as British trade expanded around the world, women began travelling

By the Victorian and Edwardian eras more women horticulturists were becoming known and accepted. Jane Loudon became fascinated by botany through her husband John Loudon and went on to write popular garden manuals for women. Maria Earle was a horticulturist and writer who published ‘A Pot Pourri from a Surrey Garden’, a book in which she wanted to provide straight forward advice for women gardeners.

She became a friend of Gertrude Jekyll and together they were influential in helping to set up professional training for women for careers in horticulture. However it was not until 1896 that the first women were employed to work at Kew Gardens. Today it is estimated that 70% of work in home gardens is done by women! The final meeting for this year will take place on Mon 17th Oct when Matthew Smith will answer the question ‘Weeds To Love or To Loath’. The Gardening Club annual Christmas Lunch will be held on Mon 5th Dec at Wyrebank, Garstang. PILLING WI Ann Ronson, recognising many faces known to her, undertook a daunting task for a local lass - to give our institute a demonstration of flower arranging. We arrived to see a puzzling array of containers: full and empty wine bottles, empty canned food tins, a lantern and a small galvanized bucket. These were to be quickly transformed into objects of beauty. Combining familiar techniques with modern ideas she produced five beautiful, colourful arrangements. She had culled the best blooms and foliage from Pilling gardens, including her own and institute treasurer Elaine Whitehead’s and, with carefully chosen ones from the florist, she produced five beautiful colourful arrangements. Whilst keeping up with a stream of helpful ideas and advice and, deftly placing the flowers, Ann conducted a quiz to test our knowledge of gardening.

She chose the winners of our monthly competition - an arrangement in a teacup. First was Marlene Connolly, runners up being Barbara Topping, Barbara Johnstone and Maureen O’Reilly. Helen Curwen thanked Ann on behalf of fellow grateful members. Our October meeting will be our A.G.M. Guests will be welcome to give the WI a try at our meeting on Thurs 24th Nov at St. John the Baptist’s Hall when Dave Pearce and Dick Gillingham will give their talk ‘Fish and Ships’. The competition will be for a Fleetwood Souvenire. Frances Connolly

OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY September was full of sunshine and promised a good start for our art group. We welcomed two new members at the first meeting. We concentrated on the composition of paintings which is of course very important. In October we have two very good artists. Ray Swift is back with a new angle on pastel, a work along and later professional artist Greg Howard will demonstrate how to paint a waterfall. Pastels are needed for the work along but Greg will be demonstrating only, so you can make notes or take photos to be of help for the following weeks practical in watercolour. Of course the members are free to continue with any of their own projects since we will be handing in finished paintings on Tues 25th Oct ready for our next exhibition in Knott End Library in November. I’ll just mention the 1st November meeting as certain colours are needed for mixing but we will talk about this beforehand at the meetings. PILLING LANE WI (cont) 17,500 feet high where Sherpa Tenzing and Sir Edmund Hillary started their ascent to the top of Everest.

We celebrated our 81st birthday party in September with a meal at Wyre Bank in Garstang.

He showed pictures and talked about the culture of the people of Nepal and his trek up to the base camp.

Our next meeting is is being held on Wed 5th Oct at 7:30pm at St Oswald’s Church Hall. Our speaker will be Alysia Gilda who is going to entertain us with ‘Music and Movement’.

He arrived in Nepal by plane landing on the world’s most dangerous airfield due to the short runway in a mountainous region. He stayed overnight in a small hotel before starting his trek with others helped by sherpas and yaks carrying the equipment. This was very arduous due to the altitude hence the ‘gasping for breath’! Everest itself is 29,000 feet high and 280 people have died in their efforts to climb it. Obviously Mr Harris is fit! It was a very interesting and informative evening. I am sure that everyone enjoyed the talk.

We have arranged a varied programme for 2017 so why not come along and see if this is for you as you will be made most welcome. Eva Cocker (01253) 811784

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (a dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - prosthodontist) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from throughout the UK and from all over the world (Europe, China, New Zealand and USA)– he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and teaches other dentists and technicians how to produce top quality dentures. Please read Christina’s amazing story at the end of this feature. She came to see Finlay all the way from the United Sates of America. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and I am fortunate in having one of the world’s best dental technicians working with me. When it comes to dentures, the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible. They should mirror original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures. Christina’s testimonial below sums up perfectly the level of service we provide.” Christina came to see Finlay, travelling all the way from Boston USA, for a full upper denture and lower partial denture. Her amazing testimonial:

Before I came to see Finlay the health of my mouth was an all-round nightmare. I became withdrawn and stopped smiling in fear of revealing the condition of my mouth. After 3 years of eating soft foods and puréed soups, I knew I could no longer avoid the problem. I went to see 10 well-respected dentists in New York and Boston, none of whom could help me. Disheartened and disappointed, I began searching the Internet, and eventually found Finlay. Now the rest is history. Even though I knew I was getting something very special I had no idea of the extremely caring way in which Finlay and his team helped me. I advise people considering Finlay’s services to think about the value of the confidence that comes knowing your dentures will be indistinguishable from real teeth and will do so without compromising comfort. Comparing the picture of my natural teeth 35 years ago with my photograph now, is testament to Finlay and Rowans’ achievement. The result has equalled my wildest dream. Shoot for the moon you just might get it! The treatment I received from Finlay and his team has been an excellent investment of time and money.

LORD OF BOWLAND LECTURE 2016 Tues 4th Oct, 7:00pm Bowland’s Medieval Roots Revealed Browsholme Hall’s Tithebarn Dr Fiona Edmonds, newly appointed director of Lancaster University’s Regional Heritage Centre, will deliver the 6th annual Lord of Bowland lecture on Tues 4th Oct in Browsholme Hall’s Tithe Barn. Entitled ‘Scandinavians and Celts: The Birth of Medieval Bowland’, the lecture tackles the early medieval history of Bowland. Dr Edmonds will draw together textual evidence, place-names and sculpture to shed light on the so-called ‘Dark Ages’. She will draw on the work of scholars such as Eilert Ekwall and Mary Higham, as well as providing new insights from her own research, which will shortly emerge in a book entitled ‘Gaelic Influence in the Northumbrian Kingdom: the Golden Age and the Viking Age. ‘ A native Lancastrian, Dr Edmonds is a former Senior Lecturer in Celtic History at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge.

SEA BANK HOUSE A TRUE HOME-FROM-HOME

I could tell you all about Sea Bank House and its facilities as if I was describing a hotel, for example the beautiful Individual rooms, some with sea views, the designer bathrooms, Wi-Fi, HD televisions, telephones and the glorious sea views from the lounges... However when I was searching for a room for my own mother all those years ago, I do not remember any of those concerns being uppermost in my mind. What I do remember is the fear of making the wrong decision, whether I was ‘doing the right’ thing, remembering “don’t ever put me in an old people’s home” knowing that was exactly what I was considering... I now realise what made it all so diffi cult: it was the realisation that taking and accepting the responsibility of making such a life-changing decision on behalf of a loved one was the hardest decision I had ever had to make. Finding the type of care available within the many different care homes is daunting in itself: • Do I want a new, large, modern home or should I say institution with all the facilities like Wi-Fi and a garden maze, or do I want the home that offers the nearest possible likeness to a ‘home’? • Do I want familiar staff, many of whom have been working at the same home for many years, coupled with on-going continuous training enhanced by a dedicated management team who are in daily contact with both residents and staff? • Do I want to see certifi cates plastered all over the walls or do I want to be greeted every time I visit by the same familiar faces? • Do I want the same staff knowing my loved one not only during the day but also at night when they are alone and feeling lost and knowing that they would appreciate If you are thinking along these lines, then come and visit Sea Bank House for a chat and feel the homely atmosphere for yourself. BE PREPARED FOR FLOODING The people of Churchtown and Garstang have once again found themselves flooded, after heavy rain caused water to overtop the banks of the River Wyre in August. I’m very concerned that flooding has occurred again, as I appreciate how difficult it has been for people in those areas over the past few months. We’ve been doing our utmost to provide help and support to those affected and we continue to work with the Environment Agency and Lancashire County Council to press for improvements to flood defences. Flood resilience measures installed in homes following last winter’s floods worked well and prevented water from getting into properties. Anyone who was flooded during storms Desmond and Eva can still apply for up to £5,000 towards flood resilience equipment and I urge anyone who hasn’t to do so.

please email engineering@wyre.gov.uk or call (01253) 891000. Please make sure you are signed up to the Environment Agency’s flood warning system Floodline, a 24 hour recorded information service that tells you when your area is at risk of flooding - call 0345 988 1188 or 0845 988 1188. And you can visit www.wyre.gov.uk/flooding for practical advice about being prepared and what to do if the worst happens. CAT SMITH MP (cont) Motor Neurone Disease Since last month I have met with Linda Endicott who co-ordinates the Motor Neurone Disease Association branch in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre, a charity particularly close to my heart after I lost a friend, Rose, to the disease a couple of years ago. Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive disease attacking the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. Messages gradually stop reaching muscles, leading to weakness and wasting. MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. However, not all symptoms necessarily happen to everyone and it is unlikely they all develop at the same time, or in any specific o We als ton s in g lo ly supp logs & ets of bags, n firegrates g, kindlin h more m & uc

order. Although there is currently no cure for MND, symptoms can be managed and organisations like the MND Association are on the front line to living with MND. I’m proud to be able to support the charity locally, and when I am in Westminster I am an active member of the cross-party group of MPs looking at policy to better support people with MND, their carers and their families. It was a particularly poignant week to meet with the MND Association, as I got married that week. I would have loved to have had Rose at my wedding. Delighted to have Married this Summer! On 2nd Sep I married my husband Ben in a small ceremony in Lancaster. Ben and I first met in 2005, so eleven years later we have to admit it wasn’t exactly a hurried decision to ‘tie the knot’.

Over the river in Preesall and Knott End I was impressed by the efforts of Emma Weaver and her wonderful team of ladies who put on a fantastic summer fete for Community Foster Care in St Oswald’s Church Hall in Preesall. Sadly the bouncy castle was rained off but the kids had a great time running around the hall, playing games and consuming enough sugar to keep them buzzing for some time yet! This is a local charity finding foster placements in Lancashire so I’m pleased to be able to support them.

Supporting Our Local Hospice

Visiting Local Care Homes I had a lovely time visiting Kepplegate Care Home in Preesall, seeing old friends and meeting new ones. At last year’s summer garden party I was asked to judge the dog fancy dress. This year it was children’s fancy dress. There were prizes for all and it’s good to catch up with residents and staff who work

I believe that everyone matters all the way through their life until the moment they die and that no one should die in avoidable pain, suffering or emotional distress. I want to make sure that everyone with a life-limiting or terminal condition gets the very best care, and I believe hospices are critical to achieving this. St John’s Hospice has supported some of my friends through some of life’s toughest times. Now I want to give back, as a small way of saying thank you. On Sat 29th Oct I’ll be walking the Bay Gateway in the Welly Walk raising funds for this amazing local hospice. If you can spare something to support St John’s please donate here: https:// thebaygatewaywellywalk.everydayhero. com/uk/cat-smith or, if you want to join me, please sign up too!

CAT SMITH MP (cont) In September I also managed to catch up with local man David Chandler who took on a ‘Lancashire Challenge’. David travelled to every train station in Lancashire on one day to raise money for St John’s Hospice. I caught up with him in Wennington station and cheered him on his way. If you can support him, please visit his sponsorship page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ LancashireChallenge Chats with Cat Thank you to everyone who came along to my ‘Chats with Cat’ in Cockerham Parish Hall on the 17th Sept. I do regular ‘drop-in’ events like this in the villages across the constituency. It is always a great opportunity to have informal chats, often over cups of tea and slices of cake. Issues that get talked about tend to be important ones to local people, but perhaps not ones you’d put pen to paper about. This is great, as I really enjoy fixing up the little

things which annoy us all! I’ll be looking to set some dates for future ‘Chats with Cat’ in the coming months, so if you have a venue you want to see me hosting a chat in please get in touch. Get in Touch As the Member of Parliament for Lancaster and Fleetwood I can only take up individual cases if you live in my constituency. That includes Knott End, Preesall, Pilling, Cockerham, Forton, Scorton and Dolphinholme. Email me on cat.smith.mp@ parliament.uk but remember to include your full postal address. If you want to meet with me to discuss any issue, local or national, please phone my office on (01253) 490440 to book an appointment in one of my regular advice surgeries. Cat Smith MP

ST AIDAN’S NEWS Return to School

Open Evening

It was wonderful to welcome back all of our students in early September after their sixweek summer holiday. What was particularly pleasing was to see the 178 new students who were starting with us in Year 7. This is our largest year group for many a year and we are delighted that we have students from so many different primaries across the Fylde Coast; we really hope that they have an enjoyable and successful five years with us.

Our Open Evening was held on Wed, 14th Sept and was an overwhelming success. Over 300 families came to hear the Headteacher explain the difference a Saint Aidan’s education can make. The visitors were able to tour all eight faculties taking part in hands-on activities, playing quizzes and getting to know students and staff. Parents and primary students are reminded that they are always welcome to come back and visit the school during the working day. Please contact Deputy Headteacher, Anthony Lord, at anthony-lord@st-aidans.lancs.sch.uk to arrange a tour.

Tower Wood Twenty-five of our Year 10 students had a week’s residential course at Tower Wood, accompanied by our P.E. staff. This enabled the students to participate in rock climbing activities and exercises. Their performance here will count towards their final GCSE grade in P.E. Happily, they experienced mostly excellent weather.

Parents’ Association The Saint Aidan’s Association, our parents, teachers and friends group, held its first meeting of the term on Mon12th Sept. It was really heartening to see so many new faces from our Year 7 parents.

ST AIDAN’S NEWS (cont) The Association has raised many thousands of pounds over the years and has funded a range of excellent projects, including cameras, stage equipment, rewards trips and the new school minibus. We are delighted to have the help and support of this super group – both in fundraising and their presence at all the key events in the school calendar. Comedy Night The Parents Association are holding a new venture, a Comedy Night, on Wed, 20th Oct. The doors open at 7:30pm and tickets, available from school, cost £10. The evening will showcase three comedians (Phil Walker, Archie Kelly from Phoenix Nights and Jamie Sutherland) and will be hosted by Steve Royle. There will be a bar and other refreshments. This is bound to be a popular venture, so don’t delay in booking tickets Andy Smith - Headteacher

COMPUTER SAFETY What do you know… about Computer Service Fraud? I’ve written on previous occasions about the dangers of scam IT support phone calls, but did you know that this is such big business that there is an official name for it – Computer Service Fraud? It’s been going on for as long as people have had computers which can use the internet, and I’ve recently seen some very big numbers about the problem so I thought it was time to have another chat about it. fraudsters posing to be from legitimate companies call to tell you that there’s a problem with your computer. They usually pretend to be your internet service provider (ISP) eg. TalkTalk, BT or Sky, or a technology like Microsoft and sometimes just ‘Windows’. They’ll say that there’s a virus on your machine, or a problem with your internet connection, and that they need to fix the issue. Sometimes they say that your computer is causing problems for everyone else on the internet, so if you don’t let them fix it now you will be in serious trouble and/or be expelled from using the internet. What these fraudsters really want is for you to give them remote access to your computer by installing software or visiting a particular website, and then for you to hand over your payment details. Quite often if you refuse to pay, they will leave your computer locked or wiped so that you can’t use it.

How to protect yourself...

Message from the Practice Manager

Remember that legitimate companies like will never cold call you asking for remote access to your computer or for your financial details.

Always be wary of unsolicited calls - if you’re unsure of the caller’s identity, hang up and then wait a few minutes before trying to use the phone to make another call.

Even if the caller is able to provide you with details such as your full name, don’t give out any personal information. Never let the caller take remote control of your computer, go to a website or install software.

The building work is now well underway and we were all expecting to lose the use of the car parking facilities during construction. We are pleased to be able to inform you that by the time the builders are ready to commence work on the patient car park the new staff parking area should be completed. Therefore we plan to designate this area for patient parking and staff will continue to park off site until completion of the build. We will keep you updated on dates but the good news for patients is that they will not be required to park on the road at any stage of the project.

If you really are expecting a call from your ISP, you still need to be careful. There are very many scam callers, so you need to get them to explain very carefully just why they are ringing and – get them to tell you exactly when it was you last contacted them and make sure they give you enough details to be sure that it’s genuine. If in doubt, hang up then wait until the line is clear and ring your ISP to check.

If you suspect that you may have been a victim of computer service fraud, report it to Action Fraud as soon as possible (0300 123 2040). Also consider getting your computer checked by a trusted technician to see if any malware was installed on your computer

And now for those scary numbers. In the year to April 2016, 33,000 incidents were reported to Action Fraud (and those are just the ones which get reported), and a total of £9.5 million was reported lost by victims of computer service fraud. The average amount lost by each victim was £2,000. Please – don’t become one of these statistics! Joan Bailey 07528 173 891

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE (cont) cause a delay as the Ecologist is coming out to the site to arrange a new home for our bat friend. Electonic Prescription Service We are also busy preparing for the planned implementation of the Electronic Prescription Service. This new NHS service lets your GP practice send your prescription electronically to the place you choose to get your medication or appliance from – without the need for paper in some cases. How does the Electronic Prescription Service work? - At first, if you want your GP to send your prescription electronically, you must choose, or ‘nominate’, a place to receive your electronic prescriptions. This could be a pharmacy, dispensing appliance contractor or your GP practice if you are entitled to collect medication from there. Nomination works in a similar way to a prescription collection service where the pharmacy collects your

prescription for you instead of you having to collect it from your GP practice. The main difference with nomination is that your prescription will be sent electronically and you don’t have to nominate a place that is close to your GP practice. For example, you could choose to nominate a place that is convenient to where you live, work or shop. When will I be able to start using the Electronic Prescription Service? - Wed 2nd Nov. What happens once I have nominated? - Once your nomination is recorded, your GP will send all your future prescriptions electronically to the place you have nominated. You should try to ensure you go to this place to collect your medication or appliance – unless you have made alternative arrangements with your GP practice. If you go elsewhere without making these arrangements you may experience delays in getting your medication or appliance.

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE (cont) What if I already collect my medications from the Medical Centre? - In this case you do not need to do anything. Your prescriptions will continue to be processed in the normal way. Flu Vaccination Programme 2016 Our Adult Flu Clinics for over 65’s and ‘At Risk’ patients will continue on Saturday mornings throughout October. Please do not phone before 11:00am when making your Flu appointment as phone lines can become overwhelmed. It is also reminded that all pregnant ladies at any stage are recommended to attend our Adult Flu Clinic. All children aged 2 months to 17 year olds with conditions that put them at risk of complications of flu will receive a letter offering them a flu vaccination. We encourage parents to book them into the flu clinic. Children with asthma who only need a ‘blue’ inhaler and do not need a regular steroid inhaler will not be invited as they are not classed as being at more risk. Children aged 5-6 years will be vaccinated in school and we will therefore be unable to offer this age group the vaccination if they miss it as the vaccines will be delivered to the school. We are able to offer the vaccination for most eligible children from age 2 to 17 years as a nasal spray, rather than an injection. Not all children are suitable for the nasal vaccine and to ensure the correct vaccine is given, we are running a dedicated children’s flu clinic for all eligible children aged 2 to 17 years old, on dates which are soon to be arranged. We will not be able to vaccinate adults at these clinics. We do ask that the person with parental responsibility accompanies all those under the age of 16. If a grandparent or older sibling is bringing them, please can they bring a consent note from the Mother. Thank you for your continued support and patience. John MacPhee - Practice Manager

90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Donation For RNLI

Fleetwood Lifeboat, made the journey across the river to receive the cheque. Along with 2nd Coxswain Tony Cowell, they thanked the members for the magnificent donation, little knowing what was to follow. The bucket was passed around the members yet again and a further £140 was raised, making a total of £900. But there was yet another surprise. A member donated the extra £100 to take the final sum to £1,006.

Kevin Clutton with his son Kevin and his wife Kay As Kevin Clutton, from Knott End, approached his 90th birthday, he decided to help the RNLI lifeboat station at Fleetwood, by asking friends to make a donation. He had no idea how generous his friends are. At his birthday party, held at Knott End Working Men’s Club, the friends and members raised £766 and Captain Dave Eccles, from

INNER WHEEL We started our new year on a fun note having a celebration for the Queen’s 90th birthday and the Olympics. The party was held at the home of one of our Presidents, and club members provided all the food. It was a really good spread and was enjoyed by all. One of our members did a demonstration of make up and one lucky member had her make up done. Our first dinner meeting of the year will be held at the end of September and the Speaker will be Dan Hoare of First Responders. This will be the chosen Charity of our two joint Presidents. It is a very local Charity and can be very useful to anyone in the community in case of an emergency. At the beginning of October some members will be going to the Auction Mart at Junction 26 on the motorway to be at the District International afternoon. One of our two Presidents is the District International Organiser so the Club will be helping to run the event for Mary. We do have fun as well as dealing with the more serious business side of things in the town and the Inner Wheel District. If you are interested please ring give me a ring. SOROPTIMISTS Women inspiring action, transforming lives Who Are We? What Do We Do? We care about women and try to give them the chance of a better life. Soroptimist clubs in the North West are working with our project partner Child.org, on the Meru Women’s Garden Project. This project will support some of the poorest women-led households in Kenya and focus on providing earning and learning opportunities to women and girls, enabling them to cultivate their plots of land, improving their lives and prospects for a better future. We help to feed starving children and give them an education. Our President Annemarie’s charity for her year of office is ‘Mary’s Meals’. At our recent meeting we watched a video on the progress of this work – the presenter told how in 2002 when he asked a 14 year old boy what were his ambitions, his reply was ‘not to feel hungry every day and to have an education’.

Cold of winter, is just around the corner. Stock up with some hearty meals using meat from the Hindquarter.

This was the start of Mary’s Meals. In a more recent interview this young man is well and happy. Although too late to access education himself, he was proud to say that his younger siblings had benefitted enormously from this project. His words - ‘you can’t think when you are hungry’.

If the weather turns too poor We could deliver to your door. Just ring and we’ll bring.

In 2002, 200 children were given a daily meal at school, in 2004 - 20,000, in 2006, - 211,000, today over 1 million children are being fed and educated.

We Value the Friendship of Others Recently three Garstang members visited Fylde Soroptimist Club for their Friendship evening and had a brilliant time learning unexpected skills as we were treated to a demonstration of drumming! Their guests explained the history of the wide variety and types of drums which they had brought with them originating from Africa and Egypt. These were beautifully made and inlaid with mother of pearl and different woods.

The end of August saw us fail to reach the finals of the Lancashire league yet again. Although we did play excellent football we just couldn’t seem to score the goals to nail a win. Of the three games we played we only managed to score one goal in a one all draw with Blackpool. On 5th Sept we started running an extra session at Poolfoot Farm Sports Complex to accommodate the people that are working during the day. The session is 7:00pm - 8:00pm on Monday evenings and is held on the new enclosed pitches under the supervision of qualified coaches. These sessions will hopefully increase club capacity further, with more male and female soccer stars attending, thus having a knock on effect for our competitive section and increase our chances of winning some competitions. Unfortunately this meant that we had to close our Monday daytime session in Fleetwood, disappointing for those who were instrumental in starting the group way back when. The decision wasn’t taken lightly but became necessary mainly due to health and safety aspects (no toilets or first aid facilities) and stipulations laid down by our funding body D day arrived for the new session and we had a great turn out with 21 people attending, allowing us to easily split five a side to play a round robin of three games exhausting but in the long run will improve players’ fitness levels. We have had some new members attend

FLEEETWOOD FLIERS (cont) and some old ones returning. All had a great time finishing off with a cake from PT, our resident chef to hand. On a very poignant note, in his own words Dave, one of our members, says he was coming out of the closet. He informed us this week that he has terminal Prostate Cancer. For me he is a very brave man in doing so. He told us all the nitty gritty about his illness and left it open for us to approach him and ask him questions about the condition. He has been suffering for a couple of years. He has had all the treatment possible and is getting on with his life without any remorse. If there is anyone in the same situation please come and talk to Dave at one of our sessions. He will gladly share his feelings and how he has coped with his ailment. Dave is also one of our hard working committee members and a regular tournament player for our over sixties team. The last word on this subject, he says if you want to talk tackle, his or yours, please come and meet him. Sunday 11th Sept saw us travel to Heywood to play in our first over sixties tournament and after four very fiercely fought games we come away with the supplementary Challenge Cup Trophy, with the main Memorial Trophy going to Wakefield. I was very proud to go up and receive the cup supported by the other five chaps who all had great games. I’d just like to mention our manager, George, who tried his hardest to get the best out of our team. He must have had a sore throat with all the shouting he did to encourage us. Thanks again George. GARSTANG UNPLUGGED You could be forgiven for thinking at first listen that Sunjay is older than his 23 years. Born in Derby, he began singing and playing guitar at an early age. A local paper misprinted his surname as ‘Brayne’. To prevent the confusion of reverting to his real surname, ‘Brain’, he dropped both in 2013.

Drawing from a rich, musical background it is hardly surprising that Sunjay has quickly become recognised as one of the UK’s rising stars. His performances have been described as ‘mature and confident’, while his guitar has been hailed as ‘superb, brilliant, experienced, intricate and faultless’.

With a relaxed and confident manner, vocal style and mastery of his instrument he walks onto a stage and addresses the audience as though he is sitting down with friends; a completely natural approach for a young man who picked up the guitar when he was just four years old and hasn’t put it down since.

Sunjay clocked over a hundred tour dates last year supporting the likes of Steeleye Span, Martin Simpson, Passenger, and Terry Reid.

Sunjay’s style has that natural drift between folk and blues and both camps have recognised his obvious flair. There have been a clutch of award nominations, including the final of the BBC’s Young Folk Award in 2012, the Exposure Music Awards 2014 and the 2014 British Blues Awards.

And you can judge for yourself. He’s with us at 8:30pm on Thurs 20th Oct at Garstang Unplugged, The Kenlis Arms, Ray Lane, Barnacre, Garstang PR3 1GD. Tickets cost £10 on the door, through our website or on (01995) 602795. Our monthly singers’ night is on Wed 26th October from 8:00pm.
