By the time you are reading this spring will officially be here and we hope that everyone is enjoying the bulbs which are flowering in tubs and flower beds around the villages.

The In Bloom team have once again been planning for the summer with plants ordered from a local nursery which we will plant out probably late May or early June, depending on the weather. Prior to planting out we will need to do the usual cleaning and tidying plus refilling the eight self watering tubs. As always we welcome anyone who is willing to give a helping hand, especially when the weather turns drier and the plants need watering. Our usual gardening time is Thursday afternoon but if anyone would like to help but at a different time – that’s fine with us Yvonne McCann 01253 811364

OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY A charcoal drawing can be as impressive as any colourful painting. Roy Smith of King Street Gallery in Lancashire was the artist. Using compressed charcoal sticks and a soft cloth for blending, he magically produced a superb picture of standing stones. A work along with Bob Goldsboro’ showed the group alternative methods of drawing. This time with Indian ink applied with a fine paintbrush showing how to create depth and 3D effects. We raised over £100 from members for art books and materials donated after the AGM. This will be used towards our overheads at the weekly sessions. April will be varied as you will see below. Remember everyone with an interest in painting is welcome. •

FRIENDS OF TRINITY HOSPICE Meat Bingo Tues 12th April, 7:00pm Knott End Working Men’s Club Bingo is back with a vengeance! Julie Wood ran an amazing meat bingo in Knott End last month and we were unable to accommodate all of the prospective players. Sincere apologies to those we had to turn away. We were kindly accommodated by the Lighthouse Church but the hall proved to be too small for all our customers. We therefore have a new venue for April. We are moving to Knott End Working Men’s Club on Salisbury Avenue and they are very happy to be supporting the hospice. Although we will be serving the usual tea and biscuits at half time, the bar will also be open for anyone who wishes to buy a drink. We look forward to welcoming old players and new and will be happy to include families in this private venue. We would like to wish every success to Danielle Worledge as she holds her charity ball for Trinity Hospice at the De Vere Hotel on Sun 8th May. OVER WYRE PROBUS CLUB Membership of the club is open to all gentlemen resident in, or adjacent to, the Over Wyre district who have fully or partially retired, or are about to retire from professional, business or other similar occupations. Meetings of Over Wyre Probus Club are normally held on the first and third Thursday in each month at The Shovels Inn at Hambleton. We meet at 10:00am for coffee and a social chat followed by a talk on a range of varied and interesting subjects The next meetings will be on Tues 7th & 21st April and Tues 5th May. The subject of the talks will be ‘Artistry in Glass’, ‘Anything You Put Your Mind to You Can Do’ and ‘RNLI’ respectively. AROUND THE WI Hambleton WI Tues 12th April, 7:30pm Hambleton United Reformed Church If laughter is the best medicine, then play on as Shakespeare would say. We had a double dose of fun and humour at our February meeting when friends, Shirley and Diane, regaled us with some of their latest antics. They mentioned raising their families in Cleveleys. Their very strong relationship developed over 30 plus years. These two
ladies also work for the Little Princess Charity, often donating their fee to the cause. Why not join us on Tues 12th April and experience an evening of ‘eggstravaganza’. Gaynor Dunkerly Stalmine With Staynall WI Tues 19th April, 2:15pm Stalmine Village Hall All our members are also looking forward to ‘My Life as a Tiller Girl’ by Bez Cooper at our April meeting. In February we had one of our own members, Margaret Farmington, give us a talk on health and wellbeing. We were all involved in doing face and body exercises. All the members were fully engaged and we showed our appreciation with an enthusiastic round of applause. In March the speaker was Gordon Bartley on ‘Iceland Fire and Ice’. This was followed by a hotpot. All new members will receive a warm welcome so please join us. Elizabeth O’Donoghue Pilling Lane WI This month’s meeting of Pilling Lane WI was certainly very different; more details at the end of the article! Firstly, after three cancelled appearances due to Covid, Mr Dennis Moore was our speaker in March. His theme was ‘Laughter is the Best Medicine’. We had a very interesting and informative talk about anxiety and stress and how it affects the muscles in our body and how it can cause insomnia, stiffness in the neck and back etc. A lot of members could relate to this. Dennis offered solutions to relax in many ways but the final solution was laughter is the best medicine! An extremely enjoyable talk.

AROUND THE WI (cont) Now the serious stuff!! We had requested to leave the WI and become an independent group. The powers that be sent two representatives to oversee our vote to leave or not to leave. The result was 33 to leave eight to stay so the motion was carried and Pilling Lane WI was suspended for three years. If no one comes forward to start up again, after three years, it will be officially closed. With that, the representatives bid a fond farewell. We then had further discussions about our new independent group. It was decided to call the group ‘Ladies of Over Wyre’, voted for unanimously. Yearly membership will be £25. Our first meeting will be at St Bernard’s Church Hall on Wed 6th April, 7:30pm. This is for one time only. Thereafter we will meet at St Oswald’s Church Hall on the first Wednesday in the month.

A first for us at the library - a special school holiday theatre show for children 8+. Godzilla lingers in his subterranean cavern. He’s waiting for a call, any call, the call. Above ground the obsessive need for cleanliness is creating a problem below ground. This could be the call Godzilla is waiting for. ‘Godzilla vs The Fatberg is 20 minutes of action-packed story-telling told in the kamishibai style (Kamishibai is Japanese for paper theatre). It travels from the furthest reaches of the universe to deep underground. It has a lurid description of something in a sewer and a surprise ending! Three performances to choose from 11:00am, 1:00pm and 2:00pm.

Booking Appointments at the Desk There have been increasing numbers of patients queuing at the reception desk in the morning to book appointments. We completely understand your frustration in accessing appointments and see why this seems to be the best approach at times. Unfortunately, we feel that this disadvantages some patients that are unable to do this and would please encourage our patients to use the telephone only to book appointments. If your problem is long-standing and more routine in nature, we would urge you to call later in the day. If your problem is urgent and needs to be dealt with on that particular day only, please call early in the morning. Home Visits Home visits are triaged by the on-call doctor

and managed as clinically appropriate. If you feel that you or somebody you care for needs a visit on the day, please call before 10:30am. KEEP EXERCISING Just what the Doctor ordered! I would like to thank Dr Vicky Simpson for her very informative article which highlighted the many consequences a lack of exercise can have on our physical and mental wellbeing, particularly as we age. She was referring to a condition known as deconditioning syndrome (more commonly referred to as use it or lose it). This is a process where, at any age, long periods of inactivity lead to a decline in our muscle mass which can affect our strength and balance and lead to a multitude of medical problems

There is good evidence to suggest that both exercise based on an individual’s ability and group exercise work well to help restore us to our peak functioning capability. In the Over Wyre area there are now many classes for you to choose from. Things are opening up again and it is a great opportunity to get active, make new friends and enjoy life. As an exercise practitioner now for over 43 years, I am a firm believer that regular exercise is essential to keep us fit and well. Regular exercise improves our physical and mental wellbeing and helps to prevent many illnesses. WYRE VILLA At time of writing our first team had just booked their place in a cup final in the President’s Cup beating Milnthorpe Corinthians by three goals to one. Defender Phil Doughty opened the scoring with striker Oly Evans scoring the other two to get us into the final. With our reserves also in a cup semi final on Mon 21st March this could be an exciting end to our season. Last month our reserves started well with two good wins 4-0 at Storeys (Sam Bowling, Rob Norton, Reece Wilkinson and Dan Fryer) and 3-0 at Rossendale (Rob Norton, Sam Bowling and Sam Milburn). Both sides also have hope of winning their respective leagues with our first team in third place currently, 14 points behind leaders Milnthorpe with five games in hand. Reserves currently sit in second place three points behind leaders Coppull United having played the same amount of games. NFPS is continuing to run it’s 2021-22 season using both Zoom and their new venue, The Church of St Martin and St Hilda Fleetwood Road, Carleton FY6 7LS.
Recently the crew have been to road traffic collisions, cooking fires, outbuilding fires and road traffic collisions. All members of the crew live or work within seven minutes of the fire station and respond immediately when their pager sounds. Recruitment for on-call firefighters opens soon Working as an on-call firefighter means being involved in a wide range of activities in your local area, from responding to emergency calls to carrying out work in local communities to support their needs or providing prevention advice to help keep them safe. In return the fire service can offer flexible work to fit around study, work, and family commitments, first class training and development opportunities and a chance to make a difference in your local community. Working in the fire service means you become part of a close-knit team, earn extra money, and receive full and ongoing training so you develop a broad range of transferable work and life skills. Fire services are keen to ensure that their workforce reflect the local communities they will work in and so welcome enquiries from all, no previous experience is necessary, but applicants must: • • • • •

We are currently running a ‘Read Around the World’
competition and a Science Week competition too! Everyone has been out on the beach this half term. Reception class went out with their Year 5 buddies and Honey, our therapy dog, who ran rings around everyone. What a fantastic trip to Liverpool for our Years 1 & 2. They learnt all about Liverpool and The Beatles. They were fabulous ambassadors for our school. Well done team! On Commonwealth Day, representatives from our school council attended the flag raising ceremony in Knott End with pupils from Preesall Fleetwood’s Charity School, the mayor of Wyre, the mayor of Preesall and other dignitaries. CARTERS CHARITY SCHOOL (cont) a gloriously sunny day it was too. We’ve also supported those who have been displaced in Ukraine by holding a blue and yellow day in exchange for vital supplies. We were humbled by the generosity of our school and local community. The supplies have now made their way over. We feel very proud of what a community like ours can achieve. Our Viking visitor didn’t disappoint Years 5 and 6 with tales of Viking times and teaching them the Viking way. The Beatbox and Rap session Years 3 and 4 was an amazing experience in class too! We are very happy to be taking a short trip with Years 5 and 6 to see a live show at St Aidan’s ‘Curtains Up’. We are looking forward to the next half term with lots of plans for our outdoor areas taking shape. The Bee Trail is being planted and work on the allotment is well under way. We
can’t wait to have some produce to sell in the summer term again. Our eco warriors have a plan of action for our school as we work towards our eco schools Green Flag Award. From rewilding the field areas, recycling and beach cleans/litter picks we are all working together to achieve this fantastic award. We are looking forward to holding an event in school for the platinum jubilee, which is a momentous occasion to celebrate, as well as popping to Manchester for Young Voices too! PREESALL FLEETWOOD’S CHARITY Spring is in the air at Fleetwood’s Charity School: the birds are nesting in the trees; the daffodils are blooming in the school grounds; the pond is teeming with frogs preparing to lay their eggs and the first blossom is appearing on the trees in the nature trail. Nature provides so many wonderful learning opportunities for all ages! Our pre-school pupils have been learning about the life cycle of a frog first-hand and soon hopefully, they will be observing the bluetits in their nesting box via the birdcam, experiencing the delight of baby birds hatching from their eggs and watching as they grow and develop. PREESALL FLEETWOOD’S (cont) what our pupils love most about our school. Our Deputy-Head Girl, Katie who is in Year 6, has written about her forest school experiences. Our school is amazing for a variety of reasons, but the thing that is best of all is our extraordinary outdoor learning facility – the forest school! In forest school, we include all sorts of subjects including: DT, science and history. In DT, we do food tech and design and build different types of shelters. We have made food on the fire that I never thought possible: blackberry crumble; fairy cupcakes; pizzas; garlic bread; hazel leaf wrapped chocolate cookies and the strangest of all – nettle leaf crisps! We learn to create shelters out of different types of materials such as: tarpaulin, rope and the trees and branches around us, especially
when it rains to keep us dry. In a History topic on World War II, we made bunkers out of our natural surroundings, hiding them away in the bushes using leaves, twigs and other natural materials to camouflage them. The forest is a fantastic place for a whole range of Science experiments - in the changing materials topic, pupils have exploded volcanos and made charcoal and popcorn. We got to make dandelion honey and soaps from different types of leaves such as horse chestnut. Other activities we have enjoyed include listening to the sap rising in the trees and exploring and observing evaporation. Forest school is a magical experience and we are incredibly lucky to be able to enjoy it. What Have We Been Doing? March has been another busy month in school. A group of thirty-two pupils from

Year 2 to Year 6 took part in the annual Celebration of Music Concert at Blackpool Winter Gardens. They put on a spectacular performance and wowed the audience with their singing and dancing. A huge thanks needs to go to vocal coach, Chris Higgins for working so hard with them! Commonwealth Day saw the whole school taking part in activities about the Commonwealth countries; our head boy and girl and deputy head Girl attended the raising of the Commonwealth Flag Ceremony on the Esplanade and six of our pupils won prizes in Preesall Town Council’s ‘Design a Flag’ competition. We have had a ‘Crazy Hair’ day (requested by Year 6) and bake sale to raise funds for Comic Relief; Reception and Year One have been on a visit to Lancaster Castle; Year 6 have had a team-building event with Commando Rugby and we have had an ‘Exotic Animals’ workshop in school. A group of pupils took part in the Mothering Sunday service at St. Oswald’s Church helping to share the love and gratitude we all have for our mums and as a school we have been using creative ways to explore the Easter story. Later this month, our whole school will take part in a child-led Easter Service also at St. Oswald’s Church, which we are looking forward to sharing with our families and wider school community. Community Links We are delighted to have been asked by Preesall and Knott-End Help Group to support their new project - farming vegetables! We have also been asked to look after the planters on the Esplanade and develop them into community herb gardens. Our pupils will also be involved in the ‘Happy Place’ community lunch and activity event at St Oswald’s Church Hall once a month.

PREESALL TOWN COUNCIL Arrangements for Annual Town Meeting
A lot of meetings have taken place between the railway group and people that matter (including celebrities) so hopefully this is the year that things start happening. Our thanks to Steven Wright and Tyson who attend the Fleetwood car boot sale every weekend raising much needed funds. Thanks also to the girls of Dawn’s Tea Room and Bakery for allowing us to hold meetings and supplying drinks and bacon butties. Two coach trips are planned for this year: One to visit our good friends at West Lancs Railway and the other to the World War I event at Apedale Railway in Staffordshire. SSRA Stalmine / Staynall Residents’ Association SSRA has told WBC what it thinks about its review of its current planning policy. Wyre Borough has produced planning policies which will guide the future pattern of development and investment in the borough for the next 15 to 20 years. The association believes WBC is not doing enough to protect the interest of rural residents living Over Wyre. Wyre borough’s attitude towards large-scale developments in rural areas needs to change. Wyre borough also called for nominations for sites suitable for development. The association declined to propose any. The association believes current planning policy has led to:

BEN WALLACE MP Firstly, I would like to thank all constituents who have taken time to write to me concerning the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Many are outraged and saddened to see what is unfolding on our TV screens every night. The suffering is heart breaking and still the resolve of the Ukrainian people is amazing. I know many groups and individuals throughout the constituency and country are helping in their own way from donating to fundraising and organising aid. I am proud of how we as a country are supporting Ukraine. It always amazes me how we come together during adversity. This week the government announced the UK-wide sponsorship scheme, ‘Homes for Ukraine’. This scheme will allow people seeking sanctuary with no family ties to the UK to be sponsored by individuals or organisations who can offer them a home, such as a spare room or unoccupied residential self-contained unit. Further details on the scheme can be found at: www.gov.uk/ homes-for-ukraine I know many are concerned about rising energy bills. As a result the government has announced a package of support worth £9.1 billion in 2022-23. This includes a £200 discount on their energy bill this autumn for domestic electricity customers in Great Britain. This will be paid back automatically over the next five years. There is also a £150 non-repayable council tax rebate payment for households that are liable for council tax in

In addition, there is £144 million of discretionary funding for local authorities to help households who need support but are not eligible for the council tax rebate. The government recognises many households will need support to deal with the rising energy costs, which are being affected by global factors. From Fri 1st April, the energy price cap will rise from £1,277 to £1,971 – an almost £700 increase in energy bills for the average household. Wholesale gas prices have quadrupled in the last year. Because gas is used for electricity generation this pushes up retail electricity bills as well as retail gas bills. CAT SMITH MP At the time of writing, the sun is streaming through my office window and it definitely feels like spring has arrived! You may have heard that, following a high-profile campaign conducted by myself, Labour councillors, our public health lead Dr Mark Spencer and an amazing group of women in Fleetwood, we have persuaded the NHS to return the mobile breast screening unit to Fleetwood - which makes it easier for women living in Over Wyre to access the service. At present it’s going to be in the town for just five weeks – so we need to make sure as many women take up the opportunity for breast screening as soon as they are invited to do so by their GP. Just 60 percent of women are taking up their screening invitation and almost one million fewer women in England were screened for breast cancer in 2020/2021. Screening saves lives – its imperative you make an appointment – it’s mildly uncomfortable but takes just a few minutes to complete, so please, if you’ve received an invite, book now, and if you’re the loved one of someone who’s had an invite – encourage them to make their appointment today.

I popped into Carters Charity Primary School in Preesall to drop off some donations the school was collecting for Ukrainian refugees – toiletries, medicines and sanitary products. There was a huge response from parents to the appeal and the children dressed in the colours of the Ukrainian flag for the day. Thank you to everyone for doing what they can to help the Ukrainians at this awful time. Vladimir Putin’s attack on Ukraine is an unjustified, unprovoked outrage. Back to more local matters and I really enjoy visiting local businesses – we have some great entrepreneurial flair in Over Wyre. I was ridiculously excited to get the opportunity of driving a tractor when I visited Siromer Tractors in Pilling. The family run firm has been importing tractors from China since 1999 and have sold over 4000 in the UK – this means you’re never less than 10 miles from a Siromer Tractor anywhere in England, Scotland and Wales! Such is their popularity that Emmerdale actor-turned-farmer Kelvin Fletcher recently bought a Siromer and even built it himself as part of a flatpack package!
The farm was purchased by great grandfather Tom Walling back in 1948 when farming and the countryside was a thriving place to live and work – and then things changed. Many farms have had to diversify to survive and Wallings is no exception. There is still a working farm which provides the ice cream production with its major raw material, fresh milk, ensuring a true ‘cow to cone’ experience. The farm also provides the animals; calves, sheep, hens and alpacas which are enjoyed by many of the visitors. As always I left with some work to do on behalf of the company – but at least it gives me an excuse to return again sometime soon! I hope you all have a lovely Easter break. in the UK we consume an estimated 660,900 tonnes of chocolate a year. This averages out at around 11kg per person per year, or around 3 chocolate bars a week! Chocolate is one of the world’s favourite treats, but growing it requires very specific environmental conditions. Behind every chocolate bar there are 6 million growers, farmers, and cocoa processors across Africa, Asia, and Latin America who depend on growing cocoa for their livelihoods. Unfortunately I have to announce that the club will no longer be able to continue. Having appealed and failed to get any interested persons to take on the roles needed to keep the club up-and-running, it is with deep regret that the difficult decision to fold has been made. There has been no other choice. The club, which was set up in 1975, has been a source of fellowship for many in the local community and lasting friendships have been formed amongst the members. THE INNER WHEEL CLUB (cont) might have been. We also had an insight into the intricacies of a virtual convention. An excellent evening was enjoyed and we look forward eagerly to the next convention which will be held In Manchester in 2024. A fitting choice of venue as it is the city in which Inner Wheel was founded 100 years ago. On Wed 20th April the club will be assisting Rotary in an event to raise funds for the people of Ukraine. Why not join us at Cabus Village Hall and for a small fee get some of your treasures valued by Adam Partridge and his team? Remember every penny will go towards helping the people of Ukraine. Also during April several of our members will travel to Hunday Manor in Workington to celebrate the District 19 rally. HAMBLETON URC I know the winter season can seem to be a very long period, yet it is one of the shortest seasons in the seasonal calendar. Well spring has arrived and in the words of the Beatles ‘Here Comes the Sun.’ We here at Hambleton URC do hope that you shake off those winter blues by getting out and about. The sun is shining brightly for one and all, so blow away those winter cobwebs whilst taking a leisurely walk about your garden, the village or maybe further afield. Whatever you chose we wish you lots of love, fun and happiness. Remember to keep safe. Like yourselves no doubt, I have been utterly appalled by the very tragic scenes being broadcast of the atrocities occurring within Ukraine. We, as a nation, have once again shown our compassion and love for other humans as we have given aid of various kinds. At Hambleton URC we have been saying prayers for all concerned. We pray for a quick and peaceful end to the greed and avarice for money, power and selfishness needs - things which should never, ever go unchallenged and must be defeated. And I am sure that is what will happen with Russia. However, we have to remind ourselves not all Russians wanted to invade Ukraine, only it’s arrogant, ignorant power-grabbing leaders. We also have to show compassion for those caught up in this illegal invasion. Those who are guilty will have to face the consequences for their actions. Finally, we Christians are always reminded of one of our Lord’s commandments, ‘Love Thy Neighbour as Thyself’. Let it be so.

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund Despite a wet start, the day of our ‘Kaleidoscope of Colour’ pop-up shop proved to be a wonderfully bright, colourful and successful event blessed with a real rainbow over the park when the skies cleared. Matt would have loved that! Many thanks to all who donated or participated. A fantastic £260 towards heart screening was raised and I hope some little treats were enjoyed too. Extra CRY Screening At very short notice we have secured an extra screening day at Garstang following

an invitation from CRY. This will be held on Sat 2nd April at the academy. All the appointments for this were allocated within two and a half hours of being available online. I think that must be a record time! Many thanks to our Milk Bottle Challengers who have so generously raised the £5,000 to fund this additional day. Well done everyone. All the best to those who have places at the screening. Please don’t forget to take all your paperwork with you and if you’re unable to make it please do let CRY know. Upcoming Events Many folks are amazed at how tiny the popup shop is, but those who join us will know it’s packed to the rafters with all kinds of wonderful goodies. You never know what little gem you might find as all our goods are so kindly donated from far and wide. Our next pop-up shop is on Sat 9th April, 10:00am – 3:00pm at Catterall Village Hall. It will be a seasonal celebration of springtime with plenty of pastel coloured delights with flowers, rabbits, eggs, chicks, ducklings and more adorning beautiful gifts, jigsaws and clothing alongside tasty treats and, as ever, so much more. The following day we are taking part in a table top sale at Out Rawcliffe Village Hall from 10:00am - 2:00pm. This is usually a lively, bustling event with delicious cakes, brews and bacon butties available too. We know from your comments that one or two of you are looking forward to the day when Sarah’s diminutive, but delightful, wayside stall makes its re-appearance in Garstang. Well, as the drier weekends arrive, you may want to keep an eye out on Cock Robin Lane for the little box with plants, puzzles and books at bargain prices. GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations The club has agreed a donation of a sum of £550 to the national Kids Cancer Charity group to facilitate respite breaks supporting specific families. This sum represents the average cost of such caravan breaks. Members were informed of a small group who are planning a cycle ride from Lands End to John-O-Groats to raise monies towards future accommodation costs for families where children are receiving intensive therapy treatments. The Club have agreed to pledge a sum of £250 to support this worthy cause which is an extension of the original ‘ Thumbs up for Charlie ‘ appeal . The Garstang and District Lions decided to contribute to the local efforts to support the wider international movement for relief to Ukraine residents and have agreed to donate £500 to be spent on the items deemed to be in urgent need at the moment. In addition to this it was agreed to temporarily suspend our usual support for Fylde Women’s Aid and ask instead that at this difficult time any items such as new toiletries, nappies, dry food etc now be sent as part of the wider Ukraine appeal - with our collection point being the Resources Centre (the old Liberal Club ) on Bridge Street.

WYRE FLOOD FORUM
Twenty large luxury Easter eggs decorated with the Lions logo have been distributed to many of our local public houses, cafes and other venues now giving their customers the chance to win one. The Flood Forum - comprising officers of Wyre Council, Lancashire County Council and those agencies who support us including the Environment Agency, United Utilities, Natural England, Wyre River’s Trust together with over a dozen parish and town councils and individual members of the public gathered in the Civic Centre or remotely on St Patrick’s Day to report local issues and give thanks for good work when it was due.

WYRE FLOOD FORUM (cont) There are more than sixty issues on the formal Log which records and tracks what is going on in the Borough and believe me the number of issues is increasing due, in part, to the unpredictable weather. The technical officers meet a week or so before the Forum as the aptly named Making Space for Water Group and work through a list of incidents brought to their attention by Flag Action Groups and at the Forum we use the minutes of this Group of experts as our agenda. Our meeting starts at 1:00pm and generally runs through beyond 4:00pm. We were joined by a senior officer from the planning department, Len Harris, who gave us a thorough review of his responsibilities including the reappraisal of housing numbers and how dealing with flooding is a big issue in his world. Development is a huge issue with residents and flooding is often a direct result. We were also joined by a group of three landowners from West Lancashire who having heard of our forum wanted to know more about it. In a discussion after our formal business forum members confirmed in strong terms how much they valued being able to bring issues to the officers responsible for dealing with them and how a non-political forum could get things done. It would be a feather in Wyre’s cap if other councils adopted our format.

We were concerned to learn from the Environment Agency that Garstang flood basin was again in the wars. As readers will know the East Gate has only recently been repaired and re-hung after a lengthy refit but during monthly checks was discovered that the gate was scraping against the central concrete wall which seemed to indicate a problem with a hinge or play in the bearings necessitating the installation of the stop logs already on site and de-watering the chamber to allow a thorough inspection. The West Gate is fully operational and should there be a need to operate the basin in the interim the Tell them you saw it in the “Green Book”

Matters Raised by Agencies Wyre: Although storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin had come and gone, Wyre had escaped lightly. The Council had been wellprepared with equipment and officers in a state of readiness. The Met Office warnings were crucial in getting prepared. Environment Agency: It was reported that the river bank repairs at Wild Boar were complete and work to White’s Brook and Stockenbridge were due to start and be completed by the end of March. On being questioned on the impact of flooding EA said they would not have a significant effect and ways of holding water back upstream were being considered. LCC Highways: They had completed work in Hambleton to reduce flooding on Kiln Lane, Carr Lane and Paul’s Lane. It was noted that LCC have one of their pumps permanently deployed in St Michaels and suggested that a working group should be deployed to operate it. At this point, Paul Long mentioned that John and Pamela Nickols , long time stalwarts of the FLAG had moved out of the village and would be sorely missed. United Utilities: Flowmeters are being installed in throughout the foul network to determine where the main issues are.

Finally, David Walmsley a Wyre District councillor who reports to the forum on his weather records told the March meeting that a week or so after the earthquake that occurred on the other side of the world in Tonga registered on his home graph!
