OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY Well, we’re back ready for our painting classes at St. Bernard’s Hall again! We can now meet up and get back into the swing of our artwork. We will be welcoming any visitors or new members, so you can ‘have a go’ too. There will be refreshments and a new syllabus along with taking subs during the initial meetings. FRIENDS OF TRINITY HOSPICE Over Wyre I need to start with an apology. On Sunday 14th August Mrs Ethel Davies held a Songs of Praise Service at her home in Pilling raising £1,000.00 for Trinity Hospice. I should have attended to accept the cheque on behalf of Trinity. I have no excuse, I forgot. I am so sorry to the 84 guests who were expecting to meet a representative. Can I assure you all that the money you raise for Trinity is very gratefully received and is an important contribution to the work of this vital local charity. Once again my sincere apologies. On Wednesday 10th August we held a Coffee Morning at Hambleton United Reformed Church raising over £150.00. Our next event is our Grand Ball on Saturday 22nd October at Knott End Golf Club. CAN FOOD HELP ARTHRITIS? I have a wonderful story to bring you of an astounding result with a patient of mine. However, that can wait until I provide you with a little background information. I always try to research my articles and ensure there is good sense and, where possible, research to support what I say. So I began to look up information about food and arthritis on the internet. Top of the list in my search were official sites from arthritis charities with quotes from award winning dieticians and doctors about how food cannot help arthritis and modern drugs are the way forward. I’m afraid I have become a cynic regarding the world in general these days – so I began digging up information about America’s young dietician of the year 2005. It turns out she works for an organisation which is sponsored by a drugs company and Pepsi!

Now forgive me for thinking it but is someone who is aided by such funding going to start telling us anything other than the party line? This led me to recalling a conversation with a research scientist a few years ago who was looking at what is the best sports drink for athletes of all abilities. I said to him that he and I both knew that the best sports drink available was water! His reply to this was revealing as he said, “Yes it is but Lucozade are paying me to do the research!” QED. Which brings me back to food and arthritis. I have a patient who has been wracked with arthritic pain for years and has had two knee replacements and a new hip. She comes in occasionally to keep her pain at bay and help her movement. For years I have been telling her to change her diet to help her pain – she loves scones and cakes – but her eyes would glaze over and it was

CAN FOOD HELP ARTHRITIS? (cont) like talking to a brick wall. She simply was not interested in lifestyle changes. I shall cut to the chase – finally, yes finally - she had had enough of the pain and took my advice on diet and made a few simple changes to what she was eating. One week later I got a message from her daughter to the effect of, ‘Nick, what have you done? My mum has just walked into the front room and done a pirouette and walked into town without a stick for the first time in years! Thank you!’ I do not wish to blow my own trumpet for it was not really my doing – her mum had made the changes! Three days later she came into my clinic and looked a different woman – no pain on her face and she reported that she had no pain at all after a week of changing her food and as a bonus had lost ten pounds in weight! I lost count of how many times she

said thank you. My message here is simple – you can have a profound effect on your health and arthritis with your diet. Stop looking for the cheapest food you can buy, for invariably you get what you pay for. Stop being pleased with a bargain in the ready meal section or a pre-packaged cut of poor quality meat and start looking for the foods that will bring you good health. As a starting point, ensure you are getting your omega 3, 6 and 9 - for most of us are deficient in these essential fatty acids. There is also a marvellous supplement called ‘7’ by Solgar which aids joint health and works fast. Take control of your health, do not wait for someone else to do it for you… Nick Tofalos

DOWN TO EARTH So we’ve given up on trying to have a lovely back lawn. The combination of climbing frame, slide, wendy house, plastic lawnmower, kid’s wheelbarrow, paddling pool and two dogs have put paid to any likelihood of a bowling green finish. Instead we have an ever-growing collection of yellow patches that one day will probably join up. Still, one of the characteristics of a gardener is to optimistically be looking to the future so we have fabulous plans for the lawn in about fifteen years’ time when the children have progressed from trashing the garden to trashing their bedrooms. Another disappointment has been the tomatoes. Granted, we’ve experimented by growing them out of the greenhouse (and we won’t be doing THAT again) but reports suggest that this year even tomatoes grown behind glass have struggled due to the inconsistent temperatures.

The best tasting tomatoes are those that are ‘vine ripened’ which is why they are so much more expensive to buy. But just because our tomatoes haven’t ripened doesn’t mean they’re only destined for chutney or the bin. Surprisingly tomatoes often start to ripen on the side that’s least exposed to sun, so it’s not light that’s needed for ripening but heat. A tomato will ripen more quickly when it’s nice and warm. So, as the tomato producers prove, you can slow down ripening by placing tomatoes in a cool area or speed them up with moderate warmth. The other factor that speeds up ripening is a gas called ethylene. This gas is used commercially with tomatoes and other fruits that are picked green before shipping and then ripened for sale. Ethylene is naturally released by ripening fruits such as bananas, and apples.

DOWN TO EARTH (cont) So, placing a ripe banana or apple in with some green tomatoes in an enclosed space helps to speed up the ripening process. One option is to put 5 to 10 tomatoes in a paper bag with a ripening banana or apple and leave it in a warm place. Periodically open it up to check for any that show signs of mould or rotting. Another way to concentrate the effect of ethylene involves placing 2 to 4 large tomatoes in a jar or bag along with a ripening fruit and then sealing it. However, the combination of moisture and warmth can encourage mould so it is usually best to put holes in the bag or regularly open and check the jar. Another solution is to line a cardboard box with newspaper and place the green tomatoes on top in a single layer with a little space between each. Cover with another single layer of newspaper and leave somewhere warm and then check regularly.

Finally, you could consider hanging up the whole plant which is useful at the end of the season when a frost is forecast. Gently pull it up and then hang it upside down in a garage or cellar where temperatures will remain above freezing. Folklore indicates this produces better flavoured tomatoes than the other methods. Alternatively, forget all of that and stick em’ on a warm window ledge - but not in full sun. In conclusion, I read this piece of advice today which I share with you for September. ‘The best way to garden is to put on a wide brimmed straw hat and some old clothes. And with a hoe in one hand and a cold drink in the other, tell somebody else where to dig.’ Happy Gardening! Alison Tarpey-Black. 077385 158 46/ (01253) 810039.

OVER WYRE BEE KEEPING August has traditionally been the end of the year for beekeepers. I found this odd when I took up beekeeping over ten years ago. But there’s no denying that the colonies start to reduce in size as the Queen bees reduce their egg laying. This is actually decided by the workers not the queen herself. The colony reacts to the shortening days, reducing nectar and pollen from flowers. Hopefully they have stored enough honey to get them through the coming winter. They’ll need 30 to 50lbs of honey to survive. There is no doubt in my mind that although I have a big responsibility helping the bees overcome challenges of disease neither the bees nor I can fight the weather. Since 2006 I have become more observant, no two years are the same. The bees are even more attuned having had millions of years to adapt. It’s been two years since our last hot summer and like last summer this has been cool and

28

often wet. On cool, wet days most flowers produce little nectar and the bees require at least 12 degrees Celsius to fly safely so for the last week they’ve been staying home. This means that they eat more of their honey stores than they produce! But if I’m greedy and go in too soon taking too much honey the colonies could starve so I’m holding my nerve and hoping the forecasted warm spell comes next week before I see if the girls can spare me some honey for tea. I’ve been helping teach improvers over at the club Apiary at Lytham Hall. These are lessons for members who’ve had bees a year or two and passed the BBKA Basic Assessment, an exam showing you know how to carry out basic care of a hive, inspect it for health and treat any disease. In addition they must show they can prevent their bees swarming and possibly upsetting the wider public! However, two years’ experience is only the

OVER WYRE BEE KEEPING (cont) start, so we’ve been meeting up and learning new techniques such as how to pick up a queen bee. You may be wondering why we would want to do this. Well, if you see the queen early in your inspection A slightly harder to spot of a hive it can Queen Bee, by Kath Kindred be handy to pop her in a cage for safety while you go through the colony. The queen and the bees’ biggest enemy is actually the beekeeper. It’s quite easy to accidentally drop the queen in the grass and she may well be too heavy to fly back or even

if she does she can go in the wrong hive by mistake. If this happens, sadly she is usually killed by the residents of the hive. So we’ve been practicing catching queens, which is much safer to learn to do with drones. As I said previously they have no sting, not that queens tend to sting beekeepers unless they are very, very clumsy! Of course drones with their big eyes can see you coming so you learn to be quick-fingered. Carefully holding the honeycomb frame you try to creep up from behind and catch the drone by his wings, then use your other thumb and forefinger to catch him by two or more of his six legs. Then he’ll usually settle on your hand. Once your confidence and dexterity are ready just apply the same technique to the queen. The final trick - remember to pop her back in her hive out of the cage before you drive home! Kath Kindred

Quinney and Matt Hesmondhalgh. Thank you for support and funds raised. A huge thank you to ‘Owd Nell’s’ for the invitation to have a stand at the Cider festival. Over the 3 day event Team Matt had the opportunity to chat with folks about Young Sudden Cardiac Death and the raffle, with its many fabulous prizes (some exclusive to the event – thank you Nell’s), raised a fantastic £826 towards a CRY screening in Matt’s memory. We couldn’t have done it without the generosity of so many and the help from Darrel Edwards in encouraging support and announcing winners. Some of the team enjoyed a glass or two of cider too! You may recall that earlier in the summer six intrepid ‘CRY Babies’ put in a lot of hard work raising awareness and funds through an exhausting, but enjoyable, series of events a collection around our local hostelries, a day with a treadmill and cake stall in Cherestanc Square, Garstang and, between the six of them, running the Brathay/Windermere and Blackpool Marathons. Thanks ladies for your fab support! Team leader, Nicola writes: So, ‘The Cry Babies’ made it to the other side of a mammoth task of a very undulating 26.2 miles of a marathon. You’ll be pleased to know that we all made it to the end of what was an unbelievably tough course. What helped us through was the whole meaning of why we were doing it - to help prevent what happened to Matt and for this we are very proud. Proud that perhaps we can highlight the importance of what Paula and Barry are doing in their plight, what happened to their son and that perhaps we can prevent it from happening to anyone else’s son or daughter. We managed to raise a fabulous £5,107.80 for Matt’s cause. For it to benefit locally is very honouring. We’ve said it before and we will say it again, ‘This is not the end, but just

EPIC BATTLEFIELD WALK (cont) The keen amateur actor was also inspired by the story of the heroic Chavasse twins featured in the moving First World War play ‘Brothers in Arms.’ Christopher and Noel Chavasse, who both served on the Front, were the sons of the Bishop of Liverpool, Francis Chavasse. The play, produced by the Diocese of Blackburn and Lancashire Methodist District, is touring venues across the North West during October and November this year. Paul was chosen to play the role of Christopher Chavasse, who served as a chaplain on the Somme. Christopher’s twin, Noel, served as a medic with the Royal Army Medical Corps, gaining the Victoria Cross twice – one of only two men to do so. He hopes the walk will provide an opportunity to see where the twins served as well as remembering those who gave up their lives in battle.

The 70 charity walkers will start at the Lochnagar Crater, in France. This was created by the exploding of a mine packed with 60,000lbs of explosives and was blown up, signalling the start of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July, 1916. The route, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, starts on October 5. It includes visits to battlefields and memorials, including Thiepval and Vimy Ridge. It finishes at the Menin Gate, where the Last Post is sounded each evening in tribute to those who died. Paul is hoping to be among the top three fund raisers to be given the honour of laying a wreath at the closing ceremony. To sponsor him, visit www.justgiving.com/ critchyboy76 Angela Norris

PILLING WI enjoy a picnic as you view the many different varieties of flora and fauna.

We sometimes forget how fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful part of Lancashire; especially the towpaths and surroundings of the canals.

On the Lancaster canal planned maintenance has resulted in new slipways and bank repairs resulting in many new moorings e.g. at Barton Grange. Also the Lune Aqueduct has been repaired with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund.

At our July meeting, Roy Gibbons and Antony Bush gave us a very informative talk about ‘The Canal and River Trust’ and the upkeep and maintenance of the local canal system now known as the North West Waterways.

These on-going tasks are carried out by a small team of permanent staff helped by a large force of volunteers who regularly help in keeping our waterways in a safe, healthy, and enjoyable condition.

The Trust is a charity which took over the responsibilities of British Waterways when it was realised about 10 years ago that a new structure and model was needed for all our waterways and canals.

The competition to name a canal boat was won by Maureen O’Reilly with ‘Pilling Plodder’ and runners up were, Vera Redmond, Marlene Connolly and Frances Connolly.

There are 11 such trusts nationally and their vision ‘Living waterways transform places and enrich peoples lives’ can be seen and thoroughly enjoyed when walking, cycling or just sitting and enjoying the passing gaily painted barges and smaller craft as they glide serenely by, do a spot of fishing or

COMPUTER MISCELLANY A recent cry for help from someone who was struggling with their computer screen having ‘turned everything sideways’ has reminded me of a topic which is a bit of a hidden gem that many people are unaware of – keyboard shortcuts. Some of us have been using computers since Adam was a lad, or at least from a time before you needed to use a mouse for most tasks, and we can remember when the screen for a Word Processor was totally blank so you could only print, save, apply bold etc if you knew the magic combination of keys to press – or had the special list of instructions which came with the particular software package. These days, you just point the mouse to the appropriate little picture or menu item on the screen and click, but there are still plenty of magic keys which can do some very helpful things or some very unexpected and unusual

things when you least expect it! All keyboard shortcuts require you to hold one or more specific key down and then press another key once, then let go. Eg. If you have opened a few programs/screens but want to quickly get back to your desktop, hold the WINDOWS key down and press the D on the keyboard once, then let go. Do the same again, and the original screen pops back up. It can be easy to achieve an accidental shortcut if you press the wrong keys without realising it, eg. if you had intended to type a capital D by holding the SHIFT key down but instead hit the WINDOWS key, then everything would seem to have disappeared! If you realise this has happened, don’t panic! Quite often pressing the same key combination again will reverse the effects, although it does mean you need to know

COMPUTER MISCELLANY (cont) what you’ve done first which isn’t always the case. Here are some of the ones I use a lot: CTRL (Control) and P = print CTRL and C = copy CTRL and V = paste CTRL and X = cut (or delete) CTRL and Z = undo last action CTRL and B = make any selected text bold when typing CTRL and I = italics CTRL and U = underline CTRL and + = zoom in (make text etc bigger) CTRL and - = zoom out CTRL and A = select all the items in the current window CTRL and HOME = move cursor to the top of the current document or screen

CTRL and END = move right to the bottom ALT and F4 key (in the top row) = close the currently open program WINDOWS and L = lock the keyboard, when leaving your machine. But what about the sideways screen? This one needs two keys to be held down first: CTRL and ALT and LEFT (or RIGHT) ARROW = turns the screen on its side CTRL and ALT and DOWN = turns the screen upside down. To get back to normal, use CTRL and ALT and UP ARROW. That’s all for now folks – but you can award yourself a pat on the back if you know the name of the Word Processor I referred to earlier! RESIDENTS’ VIEWS WANTED Help Improve Psychological Therapy Services People living across Fylde and Wyre have been invited to help the local NHS improve psychological therapy services in the area. NHS Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has launched a survey to gather the views of local people as it begins the process of redesigning services and the ways they are accessed. The consultation is part of the CCG’s work towards the national IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) initiative and is aimed at services for people suffering from depression or anxiety disorders. These services can include one-to-one counselling, group, telephone or online therapies and cognitive behavioural therapy. Fylde and Wyre CCG’s clinical chief officer Dr Tony Naughton said: “We are always keen to get the views of patients to help shape our commissioning and service development. “We want as many people from across Fylde and Wyre to fill out this survey and make their voices heard so we know we are making changes that will truly benefit our local population.” The survey will be open until 1 September. To fill it in, visit www.fyldeandwyreccg.nhs. uk/iapt/

DISCOVER WYRE New Website to Boost Tourism The Discover Wyre site showcases things for visitors to do in the countryside, towns and villages and at the coast across the area along with all the latest events. Discover Wyre highlights all the new and improved coastal developments – the Mythic Coast artwork trail, Rossall Point Observation

tower and the Fleetwood developments – Marine Splash, inclusive playground, skate bowl and Euston Gardens improvements. “We developed the new site to promote the varied range of events and attractions across Wyre. The visitor economy is very important to Wyre and we have invested in the new website to help promote Wyre’s attractions, accommodation and hospitality to encourage more visitors to come and enjoy all the great things Wyre has to offer” said Councillor Lynne Bowen, Tourism Portfolio Holder at Wyre Council. The site is, of course, not exclusively for visitors – residents can use it for ideas for days out and to keep the children entertained. Any tourism and hospitality businesses in Wyre that would like to have a listing on the Discover Wyre website can send information to discoverWyre@wyre.gov.uk

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (a dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - prosthodontist) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from throughout the UK and from all over the world (Europe, China, New Zealand and USA)– he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and teaches other dentists and technicians how to produce top quality dentures. Please read Christina’s amazing story at the end of this feature. She came to see Finlay all the way from the United Sates of America. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and I am fortunate in having one of the world’s best dental technicians working with me. When it comes to dentures, the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible. They should mirror original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures. Christina’s testimonial below sums up perfectly the level of service we provide.” Christina came to see Finlay, travelling all the way from Boston USA, for a full upper denture and lower partial denture. Her amazing testimonial:

Before I came to see Finlay the health of my mouth was an all-round nightmare. I became withdrawn and stopped smiling in fear of revealing the condition of my mouth. After 3 years of eating soft foods and puréed soups, I knew I could no longer avoid the problem. I went to see 10 well-respected dentists in New York and Boston, none of whom could help me. Disheartened and disappointed, I began searching the Internet, and eventually found Finlay. Now the rest is history. Even though I knew I was getting something very special I had no idea of the extremely caring way in which Finlay and his team helped me. I advise people considering Finlay’s services to think about the value of the confidence that comes knowing your dentures will be indistinguishable from real teeth and will do so without compromising comfort. Comparing the picture of my natural teeth 35 years ago with my photograph now, is testament to Finlay and Rowans’ achievement. The result has equalled my wildest dream. Shoot for the moon you just might get it! The treatment I received from Finlay and his team has been an excellent investment of time and money.

POLICE NOTES

We hope you are all having a fun and relaxing summer, despite the uncertain weather we have been having. Over the last few weeks we have received a growing number of calls from members of the public in regards to what is believed to be people hare coursing in a lot of the local rural villages. Hare coursing activity rises in late summer once fields have been harvested. Reports have come in from Island Lane, Winmarleigh, Old Toms Lane in Stalmine and Union Lane in Out Rawcliffe. We are urging members of the public to report it to us if they see anyone they believe to be committing criminal acts. Please do not approach anyone you believe to be hare coursing. Typically hare coursers will have a means of transport parked nearby, but usually hidden. If possible take down the registration number of the vehicle.

for the wrong reasons. Please remember that once images or messages have been sent they simply DON’T disappear, they can stay in the system for years and re-appear when you least expect it. If you are a parent and are worried about your child’s online safety then please visit the ‘Thinkuknow’ website, which offers help and advice. The parents section of the Thinkuknow website provides information to support parents and carers to understand and respond to the risks their children may face as they grow. It covers a broad range of online safety issues from nude selfies to what to do if you think your child is being groomed online. Find it at: www.thinkuknow.co.uk/ parents Enjoy the rest of your summer. Garstang and Over Wyre Neighbourhood Policing Team

The nights are now starting to become darker earlier in the evening. Can we please remind all parents to know where their children are during the evenings and that they carry their mobile with them fully charged should they need to use it in an emergency. We have received reports of youths entering the old ICI grounds and buildings on Back Lane in Preesall. The land is gated shut for a reason and anyone on this land could be injured. Now a days it is very likely that all teenagers own a mobile phone and have access to social media and messaging apps. SEA BANK HOUSE A TRUE HOME-FROM-HOME

I could tell you all about Sea Bank House and its facilities as if I was describing a hotel, for example the beautiful Individual rooms, some with sea views, the designer bathrooms, Wi-Fi, HD televisions, telephones and the glorious sea views from the lounges... However when I was searching for a room for my own mother all those years ago, I do not remember any of those concerns being uppermost in my mind. What I do remember is the fear of making the wrong decision, whether I was ‘doing the right’ thing, remembering “don’t ever put me in an old people’s home” knowing that was exactly what I was considering... I now realise what made it all so difficult: it was the realisation that taking and accepting the responsibility of making such a life-changing decision on behalf of a loved one was the hardest decision I had ever had to make. Finding the type of care available within the many different care homes is daunting in itself: • Do I want a new, large, modern home or should I say institution with all the facilities like Wi-Fi and a garden maze, or do I want the home that offers the nearest possible likeness to a ‘home’? • Do I want familiar staff, many of whom have been working at the same home for many years, coupled with on-going continuous training enhanced by a dedicated management team who are in daily contact with both residents and staff? • Do I want to see certificates plastered all over the walls or do I want to be greeted every time I visit by the same familiar faces? • Do I want the same staff knowing my loved one not only during the day but also at night when they are alone and feeling lost and knowing that they would appreciate If you are thinking along these lines, then come and visit Sea Bank House for a chat and feel the homely atmosphere for yourself. CEILIDH EVENINGS Ceilidh Evenings are becoming, more and more popular in England, is an evening of traditional Scottish and Irish (Gaelic) music, singing and dancing. A ceilidh (pronounced ‘kaylee’) is now a part of the English social scene. It is is an ideal form of entertainment, celebration or fund-raiser. The music, unlike disco, is generally of an acceptable acoustic level, where age ranges can be crossed and conversation and socialising is possible. The band, usually an accordion, violin, guitar and flute for example, will come with a ‘caller’ to explain and direct the dances, which can be of a fun nature or more family Local ess busin 2005 shed stabli

advanced if needed. The dances take the form of longways, squares and circles, and are interspersed with traditional tunes and songs, to add variety to the evening. There can be few other forms of entertainment which involve all age ranges. We have often seen children dancing with parents, grandparents and great-grandparents! A well-rounded evening would often include a pie-and-pea supper, Lancashire hot-pot or a Jacobs Join supper half way through the evening. In an area like this, ceilidhs can take place suitably in your local village hall, and tickets can be produced inexpensively. If you haven’t been to a ceilidh, give it a try or arrange one yourself. BEN WALLACE MP It continues to be a very interesting time in the world of politics nationally and like last month many of you are contacting me with your views and comments on the events of the last few months. Security Minister Appointment The new Prime Minister last month asked me to become the United Kingdom’s Security Minister. I have the daunting responsibility of protecting British Citizens at home and abroad from terrorism, organised crime and cyber attacks. I also have the job of helping the Aerospace industry with their exports. Much of the job takes me back to my time in the Army. Daily I have to balance the information and intelligence I receive with the requirements to protect the citizens of the United Kingdom. In

Britain we all enjoy freedoms that many envy but it is often those freedoms that terrorist use to attack us. Getting the balance right, as a government, is a constant challenge. I will do my very best to protect you all while at the same time upholding our British values. I am very privileged to work with our police and security services. They work so often in secret with no acknowledgement. We are lucky to have them and I know that they are respected around the world. In the Constituency This time of the year gives me the opportunity to spend time with my family here in Lancashire and the summer weather we are enjoying is certainly welcome. I am also using this time to continue to travel around the Constituency which is always pleasant but even better when the sun is shining! I continue to travel around Lancashire meeting with the emergency services, councils, hospitals etc.

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) in order to ensure that constituents’ issues are heard and understood and to highlight individual cases. A585 Relief Road I have recently met with Highways England to be updated on the progress of the A585 relief road. At the moment there are options but I have been informed that there is a preferred option and residents will get the chance to have their say later this year during consultation. I know Highways England has given a presentation to the Poulton Forum recently about the scheme and I am sure more briefings to local residents will follow. I would urge local residents to have their say and ensure Highways England know all the local issues with regard to highways.

Northern Rail Ensuring that we have access to the best infrastructure is essential and I have been concerned about the standard of rolling stock being used on local rail services. With this in mind I recently met with a representative from Northern Rail. I have received complaints from constituents which have highlighted concerns about the standard of carriages and their general state of repair. During the meeting, I made it clear that the standard of rolling stock must be improved. I am pleased to be able to tell you that from 2017/8 we can expect new and much improved trains. In Bloom One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job is to travel around the Constituency and I do this at every opportunity, at the moment many towns and villages are taking part in the ‘In Bloom Competition’ and this only adds to the area. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all ‘In Bloom’ volunteers for their hard work in the local community. Indeed there are many volunteers and voluntary groups in the Constituency doing outstanding work, please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to visit your group or an event and

GARSTANG HISTORICAL SOCIETY Garstang Historical Society launches its 2016/2017 programme on Wed 14th Sept with a lecture entitled ‘The Battle of Quebec and How it Changed North American History’. The talk will centre on the controversies which erupted in colonial North America during the years of British and French expansion, culminating in the French defeat at the Battle of Quebec in 1759. The military victory for the British forces changed the political history of North America and impacted not just on the British Empire but much of the rest of the world. The speaker is Lt Col John Downham (formerly with The Queen’s Lancashire Regiment). Prior to the lecture, in Garstang United Reformed Church at 7:30pm, membership fees and renewals will be organised. As this is likely to take some time, those wishing to renew their membership are requested to arrive for the renewal/ registration session PRIOR to the lecture. The renewal/registration session will be held in the neighbouring church hall between 6:45pm and 7:30pm. The annual membership fee, which includes seven lectures, the opportunity to attend the annual meal and an extra lecture in November 2016 on the latest research on Roman roads in the area, is £9. Refreshments are available free of charge following all the lectures.

RSPCA Special Appeals Bella the cat is five years old and came in via an Inspector after her owner could not care for her anymore. Her skin was very bad on arrival at the centre due to an untreated flea allergy. This has greatly improved and can be managed easily by de-fleaing her monthly. She is a firm favourite with the cattery staff and absolutely adores human attention and company. She is a cheeky girl and will often jump on your shoulder to come and say hello! She has bursts of energy and loves her tall scratching post. Bella will make a fantastic addition to someone’s home but will need to be the only animal in the household. Bella is neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped, defleaed and wormed. Her adoption fee is £65. Pixie & Trixie Guinea Pigs Pixie and Trixie, who are three and a half years old, have found themselves looking for a new home after their previous

owner could no longer care for them. They are both friendly and inquisitive guinea pigs who are fine being handled and will quite happily sit on your knee to be stroked. As they are sisters, we would like them to be rehomed together. They will need a large cage with plenty for enrichment to keep them occupied. The girls will receive a full health check before leaving us and their adoption fee is £20 each. Summer the staffie, who is roughly three years old, is a sweet lady who came into the centre via an RSPCA Inspector after her owner could no longer care for her. She is an adorable girl who loves to interact with people. Summer loves going out for walks and she walks well on a harness.

CAT SMITH MP Westminster has broken up for the summer recess. This doesn’t mean I’m off on holiday for weeks. I’ll be working hard across the Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency. Although I will be taking one week off to get married to my fiancé, Ben! I’m looking forward to saying ‘yes’ to seeing lots more of you so if you have a local event, coffee morning, charity, local business etc. that you want me to visit and meet with you please get in touch (details below) and I’ll see when I can visit you.

supply. This lasted for a month. Now a whole year later, we are still waiting for the report from the Drinking Water Inspectorate as to the official cause of the contamination. I haven’t forgotten the inconvenience and difficulty this caused Fleetwood, Knott End, Preesall and Pilling residents and I will be ensuring the DWI report is forthcoming with answers. “Chat with Cat” in Pilling

Cryptosporidium

On 8th August I had a great day in Pilling meeting with villagers and Parish Councillors in the morning. Then I enjoyed a lunch at Pilling Pottery before holding a drop-in “Chats with Cat” in the afternoon and finishing up meeting new Labour Party members in the Golden Ball, in the evening.

A year ago 300,000 homes and businesses across Lancashire had to start to boil drinking water after cryptosporidium was found in the

North West Ambulance Service

Blackpool Victoria Hospital

I recently enjoyed a fascinating visit to the North West Ambulance Service at Broughton which covers Lancashire and Cumbria. The North West has three control rooms – Manchester and Liverpool and our local one is Broughton. Whilst all the control rooms take calls from across the North West, the one in Broughton dispatches the ambulances and emergency response vehicles across Lancashire and Cumbria.

I made a visit to Blackpool Victoria Hospital on 3rd August to see for myself how busy the A&E is. July was their busiest month in the hospital’s history with almost 10,000 visits. Despite this, the staff are coping well. They were cheerful and helpful with everything under control. I also met with the leadership of the Trust and raised issues you’ve brought to me including transport issues with getting to hospital, as a patient or visiting loved ones, and around autism diagnosis times. Thank you to all our NHS workers who are there for us when we need them, accident, emergency or elective procedures. From our primary care to ambulance services, you’re all amazing - thank you. o We als ton s in g lo ly supp logs & ets of bags, n firegrates g, kindlin h more m & uc

I was surprised to learn that we only have one ambulance based out of Fleetwood, with two in Thornton, two in Lancaster and one more in Morecambe covering the whole of the constituency. I had always assumed there were more but have concluded this must be the same ambulances covering quite a lot of ground. Seeing the types of calls coming in and the triaging based on priorities was fascinating.

BE PREPARED FOR FLOODING

Watching the screens for the local area I saw the operator making quick decisions and always reassessing what the priorities were. It’s certainly a high pressured job! I was also asked to present a certificate to the operator who had been on the phone helping the new mother deliver her own baby.

Since last winter’s floods in Garstang, St Michael’s and Churchtown, we’ve been working with those communities to both help them recover and ensure that we are all prepared for the risk of future flooding.

Get in Touch As the Member of Parliament for Lancaster and Fleetwood I can only take up individual cases if you live in my constituency. That includes Knott End, Preesall, Pilling, Cockerham, Forton, Scorton and Dolphinholme. Email me on cat.smith.mp@ parliament.uk, but remember to include your full postal address. If you want to meet with me to discuss any issue, local or national, please phone my office on (01253) 490440 to book an appointment in one of my regular advice surgeries. Cat Smith MP

Community flood action groups are established in St Michael’s and Churchtown. However, we are keen to encourage similar groups in other areas of Wyre, particularly Garstang and Great Eccleston. Working with the council and other authorities, flood action groups can help prepare communities for the future by taking measures now to protect properties with flood resilience equipment and put plans in place should another flood occur. If you’re interested in joining or starting a flood group, with support from the council, please email engineering@wyrecouncil or call (01253) 891000.

under any pressure to speak, you can just enjoy listening to others until you find your feet. A wide variety of subjects occur at each meeting, sometimes serious and often hilarious.

The Environment Agency continues its work in the area; repairs have been carried out to flood embankments damaged by watercourses ‘overtopping’, which scoured out the rear and toe of the embankments causing breaches.

If you would like to enjoy a convivial evening you are welcome to come along and join us as a visitor for two or three meetings to get a taste. Think about it now. Our meetings commence on Tues 6th Sept.

Work has been underway in and around St Michael’s, including sheet piling along the River Brock embankment. A topographical survey and geo-technical investigation of the Ainspool embankment has also been undertaken. A leading consultant company has been appointed to look into flood protection issues in the wider Wyre area and is pulling together information to produce potential options for consideration.

We meet in the comfortable surroundings of the Garstang Country Hotel & Golf Club on the first and third Tuesday of each month from September to May. Meetings commence at 7:15pm for 7:30pm. For more information, see www. garstangladiesspeakersclub.org, find us on Facebook or contact Sheila Croft (01253) 701019. Sue Hubbard

HAMBLETON WI ‘My Life as a Police Officer’ was Josie Gouldson’s topic. Well, Josie called it ‘The Life of PC Plod’. Her career started in 1977 and she served for thirty years on Merseyside. She gave us

a potted history from 1829 when the then Home Secretary Robert Peel appointed a few constables in navy blue tail coats and top hats, to appear as civilians and not military troops. They were affectionately called ‘Peelers’ and were equipped with a small wooden truncheon to hide in their tail coat and a wooden rattle. Today’s officers have polycarbonate snap truncheons and bags of equipment. Josie mentioned being given a beautiful leather handbag to put her handcuffs and whistle in, very smart but not practical when holding on to her hat and chasing criminals.

In the early days police worked seven days a week with five days off unpaid per year and to this day they cannot be involved in politics or join a Union and are technically never ‘off duty’. In Josie’s early working life you had to seek permission off the Chief Constable to get married or have a holiday - she was refused her choice of destination to Russia. When women were first employed as police it was presumed they would be looking after women and children and were greatly resented by the male officers, particularly when equal pay came into force. Josie had to really struggle to get accepted by her male colleagues but she showed them how tough she could be when required using the same language and tactics as them. She remembers her passing out parade and the advice given to her, “Always remember you are a lady and always look after your feet.” Her career took her into the rough parts of Liverpool through the Toxteth riots and the miners’ strikes. Police today are better equipped, better trained but not always available. Josie did an extra five years as a recruitment and training officer before thankfully retiring to Knott End. The Vote of thanks was given by Rita Carr.

The Fleetwood Flyers committee have been working hard organising competitions, the latest being a now regular friendly fixture against Blackpool. Three games saw no goals but some good football was played by both sides. Sun 21st August saw see yet another superb tournament being held at our training base, Poolfoot Farm Sports Village to push us ever closer to the Grand Final in October – incidentally one that we as hosts haven’t yet qualified for. Our training ground, Poolfoot Farm Sports Village, a state of the art facility, is now almost complete. Alongside the full size pitches there are four enclosed five a side pitches and more six and seven a side pitches all with an excellent surface to play football on. Wednesday seems to be our most popular day. The session runs from 12:30pm - 2:30pm, the last half hour set aside for competition practice. The first session is free and then £3. Facilities are available for a coffee or a beer in the club house after if you wish. The benefits for all the sessions are numerous. We have people that have had heart bypass operations and knee replacements etc . I can also say from experience that in addition it improves your mental state. Getting together with some great gentlemen is a very uplifting day out. I also have a balance problem that since playing walking football I hardly notice. We are looking for more sixty plus members for future tournaments as most competitions have an over 60’s section, so please all you sit on the settee people please come and join in the fun. Both male and female are all welcome. For more information visit our website www. fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk or contact George (01253) 825206. Derek Widdup

PREESALL TOWN COUNCIL NEWS The Lowry Link Councillors are seeking to boost trade in the village from tourists interested in Knott End’s links to LS Lowry, who was popularly known as the ‘Matchstalk Men’ artist. Lowry often visited the village in the 1940s and 1950s and one of his paintings is specifically set in Knott End. A sculpture at the seafront was unveiled in September last year and funding is already in place for a sign at the ferry slipway pointing to the village centre and shops. It is hoped to erect a sign within the village centre pointing back to the tribute and the ferry slipway.

funding at county council level would appear to preclude a crossing. The next meeting of Preesall Town Council, held in the Youth and Community Centre on Lancaster Road Preesall, will be on Mon 12th Sept starting at 7:00pm. For further information about Preesall Town Council, please contact the Clerk, Alison May, by email at preesalltowncouncil@ gmail.com, by phone on 07739 868 212 or via the Contact function on the website. Boost on the Buses Councillors are still fighting the decision to axe the 2c bus service between Knott End and Blackpool on Sundays and bank holidays, but there is good news regarding the service on other days. Councillors welcomed confirmation that Blackpool Transport is planning to provide an additional journey in the evening from Knott End, leaving the village at 9:00pm Monday to Saturday. This change is due to come into effect from November. Recycling Advice A suggestion from a member of the public that tall bins should replace the small green boxes for recycling bottles and plastics prompted a response that funding constraints would prevent such a change but any householders concerned that their small boxes were insufficient should leave excess bottles and plastics in a plastic bag alongside the box. Crossing Delay Concern over lack of progress on the provision of a zebra crossing in Knott End led to a proposal to approach Lancaster and Fleetwood MP Cat Smith for support over the issue. This followed a query from a member of the public, who was informed that a lack of

PILLING BAND News is a bit thin on the ground this month. We enjoyed great weather for Pilling Coffee Feast which was a welcome change, in fact we marched in shirt sleeve order!

On Sat 10th Sept the band will be appearing in concert at the Pilling Wesleyan Chapel. This is now an annual event which promises a great evening of entertainment.

Since then the holiday season has been upon us, resulting in inevitable poorer attendances at rehearsals. We have been down to 10 or 12 most of the time. However this has given us the chance to look at different music, some of which will no doubt feature in future concert programmes.

Once the holidays are over, we shall be working on our next contest piece for Rochdale in October. Back to some serious banding.

Our most recent job has been the annual Churches Together Songs of Praise, which is held at Stella Maris on Garstang Road, Pilling. This was well attended and over £1000 was raised for the Trinity Hospice by the Fylde Country Life Preservation Society and Mrs Ethyl Davies who hosted the event.

WINMARLEIGH The Little Village with a Big History It is 140 years since St Luke’s Church, Winmarleigh, was consecrated in 1876. To celebrate this some research was undertaken about Lord Winmarleigh, who built the Church as well as the school, the Hall and the Vicarage together with other dwellings in the village. A fascinating story about individuals, the village and the Church has been uncovered. We have been celebrating this anniversary throughout the year by a series of events and also teaming up with our well known local historian Paul Smith, who has considerable knowledge about Lord Winmarleigh and Winmarleigh Hall. Our next event is our annual Harvest which is marking the 140 years by combining a Harvest celebration with a unique opportunity to hear and see more about Lord Winmarleigh and the design of St Luke’s, a Grade 2 listed

building by Lancaster Architects Paley and Austin, internal decorations by Shrigley and Hunt which include rare stencilling and Reredos and a Willis organ amongst other features. GARSTANG MILLENNIUM GREEN The Story of the Settle / Carlisle Railway Paul G. Smith - Local Historian Wed 5th Oct - 7.30pm URC Hall, Croston Road, Garstang Garstang Millennium Green Trust are pleased to present a talk by Paul G. Smith, Local Historian on the subject of ‘The Story of the Settle – Carlisle Railway’. Using his own photos and those of his wife, Christine, the beauty and drama of this historic railway, a national asset, is explored in a colourful lecture spanning the varied seasons of the year. The story is partly one of Victorian enterprise, the savage competition over coal and the creation of a railway line, which straddles some of the most memorable scenery in the North of England. The talk is a mixture of geography, history and pictures, containing of course, our well-

70

loved steam locomotives in all their glory. Admission is £3.00, payable on entry and includes tea/coffee and biscuits. A raffle will also be held. All proceeds will go towards the upkeep of Garstang Millennium Green (Reg Charity No. 1079032). We are a small charity that owns and runs the 3.5ha of public open space alongside the River Wyre that comprises Garstang Millennium Green. We are run and managed entirely by volunteers and receive no financial assistance from the Local Authority. All the work to the Green – such as maintaining the paths and benches and cutting back the vegetation - is carried out by a team of dedicated volunteers, who give up a lot of their free time to maintain this area for you to enjoy. Please support us and come and enjoy an informative evening. Christine Cummins

PILLING LANE WI We all love to receive presents, especially when beautifully wrapped, which is what was demonstrated by Elaine Cuzner at our August meeting. She gave us lots of tips and the finished results were amazing from small gifts, hampers, bottles of wine etc. all wrapped in various papers, i.e. cellophane, gift wrap and crepe paper, and adorned with various items she had collected, so no gift bags were needed. On Wed 10th August, thirty members went on a mystery trip organised by our President. We were all in anticipation and trying to guess where we were headed. We reached our destination which was Mrs Dowson’s Ice Cream Parlour and Tea Rooms in the Ribble Valley. An introductory talk explained the history of the family run farm, which started as a dairy farm and progressed to today’s ice cream parlour and tea rooms. This started after the devastating foot and mouth disease which attacked their farm. They decided to manufacture and sell ice cream which is now a thriving business selling ice cream throughout Lancashire. This was followed by a quiz of tasting six different ice creams and guessing the flavours. They ranged from Green Tea to Eton Mess. She told us they do not use any artificial flavours and the milk they use is from their own herds. We ended the evening with a supper of sandwiches, cakes, scones, clotted cream and jam. It was a most enjoyable evening. Our speaker next month is Norman Harris who will be relating his story of ‘Gasping for Breath in the Foothills of Everest’, which will be held on Wed 7th Sept at St Oswalds’ Church Hall, Preesall at 7:30pm. Why not come along and join us? You will be made very welcome. Eva Cocker (01253) 811784

She will be sorely missed by everyone at Saint Aidan’s. Here’s to a long and happy retirement!

Every summer is an exciting time for students who have sat examinations. At the time of writing, we were still awaiting the GCSE and BTEC results which would be revealed on 25th August. Needless to say, there will be a comprehensive report in our next column. We wish the very best of luck to all Saint Aidan’s students and to those from other local schools awaiting these all-important grades.

DEMENTIA BUDDIES SCHEME A new scheme being rolled out locally will give peace of mind for people with dementia and their families using smartphone technology. Under the Guardian Angels Dementia Buddies scheme, the person living with dementia wears a device containing NFC or Near Field Communication, which is technology already installed in mobile phones. If the person is lost, the device can be scanned with a smartphone providing contact details to enable them to be returned home safely. Lancashire County Council, Lancashire Fire and Rescue and Lancashire Constabulary are supporting the introduction of the scheme in the county. Guardian Angels Dementia Buddies has been developed by Mark and Karen Aldred, founders of the charity the Good Deeds Trust. Mark Aldred said: “One of the biggest fears of carers of people with dementia is that their

loved ones will forget where they live or where they are. We have developed a number of devices including a wristband, pin badge and keyring which the person with dementia can keep with them at all times. “If you spot any of the Guardian Angel dementia buddy devices on someone who is lost or confused, swipe your mobile phone screen and tap the back of your mobile phone onto the device. A message will appear on your screen giving the wearer’s first name only and an emergency phone number which you can click on to speak to their carer.” The Guardian Angels Dementia Buddies devices can be obtained through dementia daytime supports services, Adult Social Care Customer Access Service, Older Adult Community Mental Health Teams and Memory Assessment Clinics as well by visiting www.dementiabuddy.co.uk or calling (01942) 888990.
