OVER WYRE GARDENING CLUB At the June meeting we welcomed back one of our regular speakers, Marguerite Hughes, whose topic this time was ‘Attracting Wildlife to the Garden’. Marguerite started her talk by saying that gardens have become the rescue sites for wildlife which looks for three things: shelter, food and water. Shelter can be provided in trees, hedges and shrubs. It is estimated that an oak tree can support about 250 types of wildlife but obviously most of us cannot accommodate an oak tree in our back garden. However there are more compact trees and shrubs such as holly, hawthorn and blackthorn which provide suitable and safe habitats for birds while cotoneaster is a favourite for bees. Bees and butterflies feed on nectar from many of our native plants: perennial cornflower, giant scabious, thistle, sea holly, while night scented plants such as Nicotiana and night scented phlox are pollinated by moths. Fennel attracts hoverflies which feed on greenfly, whitefly and blackfly. Marguerite demonstrated that a garden can be as attractive to us as it is to birds, butterflies, bees and other insects. The next meeting is on Mon 18th July when Tim Smith will speak about ‘Demystifying Your Garden’. Joyce Wilson (01253) 813519

HAMBLETON IN BLOOM The judges will be here on the afternoon of Mon 18th July. We will need to do a massive clear up on the evening of Sun 17th July. Meet at the Shovels Car Park at 7:00pm and also Monday morning as the judges notice any scraps of paper, rubbish and of course WEEDS in the flower plots and tubs. We would welcome anybody to join our small group of willing workers. Beryl Hartley (01253) 700066

FERRY TALES

July Notices

Sixteen people attended a lively ‘Ferry Tales’ community writing and reminiscence workshop at Knott End Library to share their stories of the Fleetwood to Knott End ferry.

Sundays: 9:00am Morning Worship 10:30am Communion Mondays 6:30pm Evening Prayer Tuesdays 10:30am Mothers & Tots Wednesdays 6:00pm Choir Practice Thursdays 9:30am Informal Communion followed by coffee. If you are interested in joining one of our Pilgrim groups, please contact Rev Dyllis Dickinson (01253) 700011 Sun 10th July - 10:30am Pet Service A service of Thanksgiving for our pets. Bring them along. Sun 24th July - 10:30am Patronal Festival. All welcome. Sun 31st July - Over Wyre churches worshipping together at Hambleton. Catherine Hall

This was organised to enable individuals to contribute to the development of a community booklet recalling the ferry’s past and celebrating its role in the lives of generations of Over Wyre families. The ferry has a colourful history stretching back more than 100 years. Many of those who attended the workshop told amusing stories of how they relied on the vessel to get to school or work back in the days when health and safety legislation was less of a priority than it is today. Another workshop will take place on Thurs 14th July from 2:00pm - 3:00pm. Refreshments will be available afterwards. The session is intended to be friendly and informal and there is no need to book – just turn up! Angela Norris

Members can either enter for the Bowland Trophy, which means digital jpeg pictures as they came out the camera (with only cropping) or for the Summer Cup itself, where any amount of manipulation is allowed for colour and monochrome prints and digital images, as long as the photos were taken on the day. DOWN TO EARTH I’m sure you’re not in the slightest bit interested in what my favourite cheese is but I’m going to tell you anyway – it’s Cornish Yarg and can be found rarely in supermarkets and mostly in Cumbrian delicatessens. And probably Cornwall. But what has this got to do with plants I hear those of you who’ve bothered to read this far, cry? Well, here’s the thing. The cheese is wrapped in nettle leaves. The leaves, which attract naturally occurring moulds, are brushed onto the cheese in concentric circles. As the cheese matures, the edible nettle rind imparts a delicate, mushroomy taste and develops its unique bloomy white appearance.

North Africa and parts of Asia learn quickly to steer clear of Urtica dioica on account of its vicious sting. The painful sensation of nettle stings occurs when toxins from specialised hairs are delivered into the skin. Each stinging hair has a bulbous tip which breaks off to leave a sharp, needle-like tube that pierces the skin and injects histamine and acetylcholine, causing itching and burning that can last up to 12 hours.

Who would have thought that this annoyingly brutish plant that jumps out at unsuspecting toddlers causing embarrassingly high pitched crying all the way back home, could have such an interesting culinary use.

Our toddler has developed nettle neurosis and remains impassive when we try to explain actually how amazing these plants are. Nettles support over 40 species of insects, including small tortoiseshell and peacock butterflies. Nettles have been used for centuries for a multitude of purposes, and today continue to be harvested from the wild for food, medicine and textiles.

DOWN TO EARTH (cont) is making your own garden fertilizer. The nutrients in stinging nettle fertilizer include minerals, flavonoids, essential amino acids, proteins and vitamins. A nettle leaf plant food contains Chlorophyll, Nitrogen, Iron, Potassium, Copper, Zinc, Magnesium and Calcium.

Ideally use rain water and set the bucket in a semi-sunny area. Leave the mix for one to three weeks to ferment, stirring every couple of days until it stops bubbling.

So what’s not to like?

Finally, strain out the nettles and dilute the concoction at one-part fertilizer to 10 parts water for watering plants or 1:20 for direct foliar application. The undiluted mix makes an excellent organic herbicide and can be added to the compost bin to stimulate decomposition.

Well the smell actually but if you can put this to one side your garden will love you for it.

Warning - tomatoes and roses don’t enjoy the high iron levels in nettle fertilizer.

Fill a large jar or bucket with the nettle leaves and stems, bruising the foliage first. Weigh down the nettles with a brick or paving stone and then cover with water. Only fill threequarters of the bucket with water to allow room for the foam that will be created during the brewing process.

Oh yes – and don’t forget to wear your gloves otherwise you too could be wailing like our two-year-old.

These nutrients, along with Vitamins A, B1, B5, C, D, E, and K, combine together to create a superb tonic for the garden.

Happy Gardening! Alison Tarpey-Black 07738 515846 (01253) 810039

RSPCA Special Appeals Storm was originally rehomed from the centre in 2011 but has sadly been returned to us due to the death of her owner. She is a friendly girl but can be a little vocal when she first meets you although she does settle down. She loves a fuss and will make a great companion for the right person. She knows basic commands and will do anything for a tennis ball. She isn’t suitable to live with other animals and needs further socialising around some dogs as again she can be vocal. Storm has only three legs but she is very active and loves going out for walks. A home with older children is preferred. She is fully vaccinated, neutered, flea’d, wormed and microchipped. Her adoption fee is £120.

Barney the cat came into our care via an RSPCA Inspector after being abandoned by his previous owner. He is a lovable boy who initially can be a little shy but once he feels safe and gets to know you he enjoys a gentle stroke. He is a special cat on a special renal diet which he loves and is looking for that loving person or family to give him the home he deserves. He is suitable to live with a calm cat and is ok for first time cat owners and to live with older children. He is fully vaccinated, neutered, flea’d, wormed and microchipped. His adoption fee is £75. The centre also has a range of recycling facilities, details of which can be found at www.lancashire.gov.uk – search ‘Garstang waste’. SOMME 100TH ANNIVERSARY Garstang Remembers The Somme 1916 A commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Battles of the Somme is to be held in Garstang this month with a lecture by historian Paul Smith. The illustrated lecture, entitled ‘The Big Push - Britain and the Somme, 1916’ is to be held on Sat 2nd July at Garstang Arts Centre at 7:30pm. The talk will look at the pivotal four month battle that brought the horrific impact of the Great War home to the people of Britain. Special mention will be made of the 22 servicemen from Garstang and surrounding villages who made the ultimate sacrifice. The first part of the lecture will examine the social history context of the event, the response to the appeal made by Lord Kitchener in August 1914, the dramatic rush to the colours and the appearance of the socalled ‘Pals’ battalions. Paul will also speak about the role of two local regiments in the drive to secure recruits in Garstang and the wider area. The second part will examine the aims of Britain’s Military High Command for the Somme. Key aspects to be explained will be the choice of battlefield and its features, the week-long artillery preparation, the men gathering in the trenches .. and their first tragic assault on 1st July. The principle events of the long attritional battle will be outlined before the talk concludes with an opportunity for questions. Tickets for the lecture, cost £5 (including refreshments), are available from Market Place News, Garstang. * Paul is the co-author of the book on those from Garstang who died in the Great War. Copies are still available (from Market Place News,Garstang, Garstang Tourist office and the Dewlay cheese shop, A6, Garstang). Anthony Coppin

PROTECTING YOUR SPINE Either you have had back pain at some time or you know someone who does. It is an incredibly common problem for us bipeds. The moment we decided to stand up to look over the long grasses of the savannah was the moment back complaints began! Unfortunately, taking to two legs has led to an evolutionary compromise that has left us prone to back problems. Our spine is a series of bones made of two parts‌blocks at the front to take our weight and absorb the invisible force of gravity and joints at the back to enable us to move. It should have a double curve to it, curving outwards in the lumbar spine (which makes our backside stick out at the back) and curving forwards at the top just below our neck in the thorax. This double curve is able to withstand ten times as much force as a simple column of blocks (the double curve was used by medieval architects to build

36

huge cathedrals that could hold themselves up) and so is amazingly good at keeping us upright. However, there are many things that can go wrong and it is worth remembering that a lot of back problems cause severe pain (I have seen people go green with the pain!) but are not serious. So why is it that our back goes wrong? In my experience as an osteopath I see many people who appear to have a back problem but when I hear their story they actually have a sitting problem! This is more and more the case in a population that sits at work, sits to get to and from work, sits while the microwave zaps dinner (please do not cook your food with these devices‌they kill all that is good in your food) and sit in front of the TV for their entertainment. Our body evolved to be able to move for survival, without being able to move to build

PROTECTING YOUR SPINE (cont) shelters, hunt and gather food or fend off threats we would die. Yet we have created a society where we can have all we require at the click of a button. This is incredibly unhealthy for a body that is demanding movement to stay healthy and the biggest hit is to our spine when we sit all day. The double curved S of our spine becomes a C shape when we sit and this causes immense stress and strain, both in the lower back and our neck. Since many of us have been sitting since childhood at school many of our protective muscles have become weak or ‘switched off’ leaving us even more vulnerable. We then add further trouble by eating foods that contribute enormously to ‘wear and tear’ such as sugar, too much cereal and too much grain. However, whilst our spine is vulnerable to problems there are a few simple things that

can be done to protect it from injury. Given that sitting is the cause of much of our trouble step one is to avoid sitting too much. Every now and then in an evening stand up, pace the room, do some stretches. Please do not think this is silly or not possible… your body is demanding a change of posture about every twenty minutes which will help to prevent strain and injury. Never reach out, bending forward to pick anything up and definitely do not add in a twist. An example of this would be bending forward and to the left with your right hand to pick something off the floor, or, even worse, off the back seat of your car when you are in the front. Even the world’s strongest back becomes incredibly unstable with this movement. The simple remedy is to get as close as you can to the object you wish to pick up. Always go down on one knee to pick up an

If you have been bent over doing the weeding in your garden for a while it is vital you return to the upright position SLOWLY. This allows all your tissues to readjust having been stretched whilst you have been doing your work. This goes for any prolonged hold of posture. If you have back pain get it fixed. Do not cover it up with pain killers and carry on. Pain is a warning that you may need some help. Pain killers merely lead to further trouble down the line. Lastly, if you know you are prone to trouble take up some exercise too…Pilates is wonderful and so is Yoga. In fact, why not do them both? Not got time? Then be prepared to make time for your pain! FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (a dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - prosthodontist) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from throughout the UK and from all over the world (Europe, China, New Zealand and USA)– he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and teaches other dentists and technicians how to produce top quality dentures. Please read Christina’s amazing story at the end of this feature. She came to see Finlay all the way from the United Sates of America. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me. When it comes to dentures, the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible. They should mirror original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures. Christina’s testimonial below sums up perfectly the level of service we provide.” Christina came to see Finlay, travelling all the way from Boston USA, for a full upper denture and lower partial denture. Her amazing testimonial:

Before I came to see Finlay the health of my mouth was an all-round nightmare. I became withdrawn and stopped smiling in fear of revealing the condition of my mouth. After 3 years of eating soft foods and puréed soups, I knew I could no longer avoid the problem. I went to see 10 well-respected dentists in New York and Boston, none of whom could help me. Disheartened and disappointed, I began searching the Internet, and eventually found Finlay. Now the rest is history. Even though I knew I was getting something very special I had no idea of the extremely caring way in which Finlay and his team helped me. I advise people considering Finlay’s services to think about the value of the confidence that comes knowing your dentures will be indistinguishable from real teeth and will do so without compromising comfort. Comparing the picture of my natural teeth 35 years ago with my photograph now, is testament to Finlay and Rowans’ achievement. The result has equalled my wildest dream. Shoot for the moon you just might get it! The treatment I received from Finlay and his team has been an excellent investment of time and money.

CAT SMITH MP In Memory of Jo Cox MP As I sit down to write the latest instalment about what I am doing as your MP I do so with an overwhelming sense of grief. In the past days I have learnt of the shocking murder of my friend and colleague Jo Cox MP. It’s rocked my world and right now the grief is raw. Jo was a petite five-foot Yorkshire lass who represented the constituency she was born and raised in. She loved life, she loved the job and she loved people she met – perhaps most heartbreakingly she loved her husband and her children and I cannot begin to imagine how they ever get back to any kind of normal life now. Jo was doing her job, the same job that

myself and your other Wyre MPs do day in and day out. It’s not unusual for MPs to hold advice surgeries for their constituents, we all do it regularly. I’m sure I speak for all your Wyre MPs when I say we are truly shocked that this horrific attack happened to Jo and our thoughts and prayers are with Jo’s family, her friends and all those who knew her best. I’ll certainly miss her. Frack Free Lancashire In Parliament I have been raising the issue of fracking, something I have been doing continuously since I was elected, but this month I have been particularly focused on the issue of jobs. Advocates for fracking claim the practice would bring jobs to Lancashire. In a way they are right because in Cuadrilla’s applications to frack in Lancashire, they state that the total net employment was expected to be 11

CAT SMITH MP (cont) jobs at each of the two sites. The only jobs for local people would have been in security and cleaning. I am concerned that meanwhile the tens of thousands of jobs in tourism in our area would be in jeopardy. I asked the Minister of State for Communities and Local Government and the Tourism Minister on two separate occasions what assessment they had made of the impact of fracking on the tourism industry in Lancashire and on the Fylde Coast. I was told that they “hope that fracking would not have an impact on tourism” and that for me isn’t good enough. No research or assessment has been made about this. We are risking jobs which are already here. It fails to address the issue that tourists will be put off by the sight of fracking wells ruining our beautiful countryside. Outside of the House of Commons Chamber I joined with local campaigners from Frack Free Lancashire, Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth to hand in a petition of 186,000 signatures to the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street calling on the Government to respect the local democracy which turned down the recent applications to frack. Lancashire County Council went through the planning process with applications from Cuadrilla in a fair, democratic and transparent process. An Update (And A Win!) On Autism On the 25th May I won a commitment from the Government after asking a question about autism in Prime Minister’s Questions. After receiving dozens of emails from local parents of autistic children and young people in the past few weeks, I wanted to raise one aspect of the many challenges that come with raising an autistic child; support for teachers in schools. I asked George Osborne who was standing in for the Prime Minister, about one particular local case and asked for autism awareness to be included in teacher training. I was delighted to hear that the issue has been

raised with the Chair of the Initial Teacher Training Review and that this will include recommendations on how core teacher training should cover Special Educational Needs (SEN) including autism. The Government is taking seriously the preparation teachers get for teaching autistic children. When I learnt that SEN and autism can amount to as little as 15 minutes of a teacher training course I called for the review into teacher training to address this. All teachers will, throughout their career, teach autistic children and its right they are given training specifically on this. STALMINE PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Play Facilities for Older Children Councillors considered the feedback from consultation on what kind of equipment older children would like to see in the new play area. This included a multi use games area, basketball net, a zipline, climbing frame, skate park, a big slide, trampoline, roundabout, monkey bars, obstacle course, spider web and tree house. The space is relatively small and will not accommodate every item and is too small for a multi use games area. The Council will now ask a number of play equipment companies to provide costed designs which incorporate as many elements as possible for selection of a preferred provider by councillors and will look for grant funding for the project. Grant Success Councillors were delighted to note that the Council had been awarded ÂŁ1,000 from the RV, E and H Moon Charitable Trust towards the cost of play facilities for older children. SEA BANK HOUSE A TRUE HOME-FROM-HOME

I could tell you all about Sea Bank House and its facilities as if I was describing a hotel, for example the beautiful Individual rooms, some with sea views, the designer bathrooms, Wi-Fi, HD televisions, telephones and the glorious sea views from the lounges... However when I was searching for a room for my own mother all those years ago, I do not remember any of those concerns being uppermost in my mind. What I do remember is the fear of making the wrong decision, whether I was ‘doing the right’ thing, remembering “don’t ever put me in an old people’s home” knowing that was exactly what I was considering... I now realise what made it all so difficult: it was the realisation that taking and accepting the responsibility of making such a life-changing decision on behalf of a loved one was the hardest decision I had ever had to make. Finding the type of care available within the many different care homes is daunting in itself: • Do I want a new, large, modern home or should I say institution with all the facilities like Wi-Fi and a garden maze, or do I want the home that offers the nearest possible likeness to a ‘home’? • Do I want familiar staff, many of whom have been working at the same home for many years, coupled with on-going continuous training enhanced by a dedicated management team who are in daily contact with both residents and staff? • Do I want to see certificates plastered all over the walls or do I want to be greeted every time I visit by the same familiar faces? • Do I want the same staff knowing my loved one not only during the day but also at night when they are alone and feeling lost and knowing that they would appreciate If you are thinking along these lines, then come and visit Sea Bank House for a chat and feel the homely atmosphere for yourself. COMPUTER SAFETY (cont) programs are generally used to create a copy of the whole machine, so you can use it to recover the whole computer in one go instead of having to re-install all the individual programs. Copying individual files manually or using a cloud service normally only copies your work files and not the programs. This is quicker and takes up less space. The cloud storage often also allows you to access your files from another computer or share items such as pictures with family and friends. Whilst it may be possible to use CDs or DVDs to take backup copies of your data, these have limited capacity and are slow and easily damaged or lost. USB pen drives/memory sticks can be used if you have one which is big enough to take all your personal data, but please keep them in a safe place and try to keep more than one copy as they are again easily damaged or lost. If possible, password protect the backups in order to keep them safe from prying eyes eg. if you lose the memory stick containing all your documents. Also you should test that the data is recoverable - try to copy one or more files back from the backup to your computer, just to be sure that everything is going to work properly should the need arise in an emergency. This is the last in my regular series of articles for now, but I will probably be back again soon. If readers would like a Question and Answer article in the magazine, please send questions to the Editor, Sue Moulton - Email sue@focusmags.co.uk In the meantime, if you have any concerns about computer security then please get in touch.

PILLING JUBILEE SILVER BAND Just after we went to press last month, the band attended the annual Whit Friday March Contest which is held at various venues around the eastern side of Manchester. The format involves bands arriving at a venue, playing a short introductory march as they enter the village, then standing in a predetermined area whilst performing a contest march which is marked by an adjudicator. Bands travel between venues by coach and aim to reach up to six venues during the evening. We left Pilling at 4:00pm on an afternoon which threatened rain and, true to form, before the evening was out we got wet! Our usual coach, Avalon Travel, was unavailable, so owner Mike kindly arranged for a substitute. The driver was not familiar with the territory, which probably explains why we only managed to attend four venues, in fact at one

point we got stuck up a narrow street for at least 20 minutes. All considered we had a pretty good result. Bands are not segregated, so lower section bands find themselves playing next to higher section ones or even championship bands such as Brighouse & Rastrick. Our results were as follows: •

Grotton 27th out of 47 bands

Lydgate 41st out of 71 bands

Friezland 15th out of 47 bands

Uppermill 14th out of 52 bands

One may conclude that we must have beaten a few good bands from a higher section. The adjudicators remarks were all positive, indicating that Pilling Band has much good music to offer. During July we continue our round of Galas

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Message from the Practice Manager

As you are all aware, it has been a long drawn out business waiting on NHS England to provide news about our Building Extension project but at long last, it is now confirmed that building work will commence on Mon 11th July.

I am afraid there will be a two week window at the beginning of the project when there will be no on-site car parking for both patients and staff alike.

At least the building extension will now commence during the summer months and we will get the weather! Approximate timescales are as follows: •

Phase 1 – Car park and asbestos works – 3 weeks

Phase 2 – Extensions 1,2,3 and structure of 4 – 12 weeks

Phase 3 – Completion of extension 4 and internal works, existing entrance works – 8 weeks

Initial proposed contract timescale - 23 weeks.

Unfortunately a 30 foot wide hole has to be dug in the car park for an attenuation tank to be inserted. The Health & Safety advisor on the Project Management Team has deemed that the only safe way of implementing this is to close down the car park for a two week period where the only access during this period will be for ambulances only. As soon as we get confirmed dates of when the car park will be closed we will advertise it immediately but in the meantime I thought you should be made aware that this will have to happen and will mean patients having to park on Pilling Lane during this essential

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE (cont) work. As mentioned above, it will only be for two weeks and the dates will be announced once known. This Building Extension Project is good news for our local community and represents the best investment to provide the required services going forward. Thank you in advance for all your patience in allowing us to get the essential car park work underway and for your forbearance when we are forced to announce the two week window that the car park will be closed. On the bright side we will have a new Building Extension facility which will provide a 21st Century environment that will meet the needs and aspirations of the patients, staff and the wider Over Wyre community. We now look forward to seeing our Extension Project dream become a reality.

Advice for Carers People in Fylde and Wyre who are relied on to look after others are being urged to take care of themselves. There are an estimated 23,000 carers across Fylde and Wyre who look after family members or friends who depend on them for varying degrees of support. The campaign raises awareness of caring, highlights the challenges carers face and recognises the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. Carers make a fantastic contribution to the health and general mental wellbeing of people across the country. Many of them don’t even recognise the fact they are a carer and yet their selfless attitude of putting others first could be problematic if carers do not make sure they look after themselves.

Are you phoning an advertiser for a quote?

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE It can be very demanding having to care for family or friends, but if a carer becomes ill it isn’t just they who suffer, but the person they care for as well. All our Carers should bear in mind the following: •

Get enough sleep – Long-term lack of sleep increases the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity, as well as making you feel depressed, so try to make sure you get a good night’s sleep.

Look after your back – Lifting can cause extra strain on your back, so make sure you take advantage of any training opportunities available and be mindful of your posture.

Tell your doctor – If you haven’t already done so, tell your GP that you are a carer and this will be recorded on your records. This will make it easier for your

doctor to understand your needs. •

Flu jabs – When winter comes, make sure you are vaccinated against flu because if you get ill, you won’t be able to look after anyone.

Take a break – Try to take some time to relax either for the day, a short break or a full holiday, either with or without the person you are caring for.

Stress, depression, guilt and resentment – These are all feelings that carers can be vulnerable to and it is perfectly natural to feel this way, but there are ways to deal with these negative emotions. Make yourself aware of the support on offer and use it. Talking to someone can do you the world of good and can be a very effective way of managing negative emotions.

John MacPhee - Practice Manager

Preesall, Over Wyre Personal Assistant(s) / Carer(s) from £8.50 per hour Applications are invited from committed individuals whose main aim in life is to make a difference, and who would be willing to work flexibly to join a team supporting two young ladies and their father in Preesall. There are full and part time posts covering 24 hours over 7 days. Flexibility and reliability are essential to the post and weekend and afternoon/evening work are especially needing to be covered. Paige and Becky (aged 23 and 29) have profound physical and learning disabilities and associated complex needs, whilst their dad needs help and care as a result of a painful spinal condition. The work is challenging but rewarding and is about sharing a lifestyle and enhancing quality of life. The aim is to fulfil potential and enjoy each day as much as possible. These young ladies need people who know them well and can communicate with them. Becky is now 29 and has a terrific sense of humour, she loves music (all sorts from jazz to classical, especially live performances) and enjoys swimming and socialising (pubs and meals). Paige is 23 and is such fun, very active and lively and likes animals and the outdoors. She also likes music and socialising and is crazy about the X Factor and musicals and concerts. David is a very loving father, who endures continual pain but needs help to manage his daily life. He enjoys sport with his family members and enjoys books on his kindle, especially. Experience with care is not essential as training will be given, however care and nursing experience and qualifications are desirable. Driving is required as is a CRB check. Important attributes responsibility and passion for care with a good sense of humour. Enthusiasm to support these remarkable young women and their Dad and a desire to make a difference is most important of all.

ROTARY Rotary Clubs Promote Football For Youngsters Under Twelve For the past three years Rotary Clubs in Lancashire have organised a five aside football competition for youngsters under the age of twelve. The football tournament has taken place at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston (UCLAN). This year 13 teams from across South Lancashire competed and the team from Garstang Academy who, on entering for the first time, were runners up. The winning team was Chorley Parklands High School. There were 13 teams taking part across our District group. Thanks go to the students at UCLAN who ran the event and congratulations to the

young footballers who competed with such great-spirit. The winners and the runners up will have an expenses paid trip to The National Football Centre, St. George’s Park, Burton on Trent to play in the National Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland finals. St. George’s Park, a £105m facility set in 330-acres of Staffordshire countryside, is the home for England’s 24 national teams. With 12 outdoor pitches, including a replica of the

ROTARY (cont) Wembley surface, a full-size indoor 3G pitch, a suite of rehabilitation and sports science areas, and an indoor Futsal sports hall, it provides world-class facilities for all England teams ahead of international fixtures.

To achieve our objective Heartbeat from Preston kindly provided the staff and equipment to conduct the blood pressure tests. Over a period of four hours a total of 100 tests were carried out.

The Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre sponsored the team from Garstang Academy. Preston South were the Area Organisers.

The fully-experienced, qualified personnel were able to provide the appropriate advice to 33 people, following the tests, who exhibited high blood pressure.

Rotary Stroke Awareness Day Thanks to the generosity of Booths in Garstang and the services of Heartbeat, the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre was able to participate in a national campaign to raise public awareness of one of the main cause of strokes: High Blood Pressure. The private facility was provided on the first floor of Booths on Thursday 12th May. There was no charge for tests which were conducted in confidential surroundings.

This campaign is an annual event and part of a public awareness exercise being undertaken by Rotary Clubs throughout Great Britain and Ireland. Rotary is an organisation which believes in community service and is open to men and women. We meet every Wednesday evening at the Garstang Golf and Country Club. OVER WYRE BEEKEEPING What a fantastic surprise 2016 has become! All a girl asks for is a warm summer and plenty of flowers. And at the moment it’s here. The Honey Bees know it - my colonies went from ticking over to a population explosion in the last four weeks. I recently read in the British Beekeepers Association journal that researchers have scientifically proven that honeybees work harder the day before it rains. Can they somehow tell in advance if a British summer will be good or bad for them? I don’t know but have my suspicions they might somehow be able to forecast much further ahead than people. Not so much “voice of the beehive” as “a hive mind”? Certainly not just dumb animals when you get to know them a bit. Anyway with Dave’s help I have controlled each hive’s need to swarm and packed them off to a large field of Field Bean several miles away and thought we might have a rest for

a bit. But I’d forgotten the Bumblebees and Wasps of course. While neither give honey they too are growing in numbers and like many other beekeepers in the UK I volunteer to give advice or as a last resort step in if people have problems with them. My mobile is starting to get warm as people get in touch for advice. So what’s going on? Well, those huge round furry bees that you noticed in March or April are Queen Bumblebees born late last summer and just

OVER WYRE BEEKEEPING (cont) out of hibernation. The one you saw was out house-hunting and probably looking for early flowers for food too. With no workers to help her she is a very busy bee. Things probably got a bit harder once she found your bird box or a nice hole in the shed wall as then she had to build a couch, food store and start having a family. But now in early June she has up to 100 daughters to help her with the shopping so she stays indoors but her workers can often scare folks. Stings seem to be very Bumblebees are provoked.

Wasps however can be a different story, so how do you tell them apart? Easy; go online and ask your favourite search engine for the BBKA website. A link to help with swarms, bees and wasps is right there on the home page, as at this time of year their phones ring off the hook with queries.

The link on the home page sends you to a dedicated page on how to first try to identify which winged creature you have, wasp, bumble - or honeybee. And you get a link to contact a local beekeeper who has VOLUNTEERED to give advice. We will come out for honeybees, but nobody is allowed to interfere with wasps or any bumble bee nest by law. These are protected and threatened species, but often bee and person can live together for the summer and the sad end to our earlier tale is that our Queen Bumble is getting old; after laying some new daughter Queens she and her colony will naturally die with the onset of cold weather….but next spring don’t worry… there goes another HUGE bumblebee…! SAVING BELLA MORRIS Please just take a moment to read this and your life will be changed forever. I am requesting your support in saving my daughter, Bella Morris, aged three and many other children like her diagnosed with the extremely rare genetic condition of Vanishing White Matter. Vanishing White Matter affects children who initially present as any other child, developing physically and mentally with no obvious delay or disability, an attribute that any Mother or Father, Grandparent, Aunt or Uncle could relate too.

However Vanishing White Matter tends to present itself between the ages of 2 to 6. An event like a cold, temperature or virus triggers it. Their ability to walk will be taken from them progressing to eventual immobility, deafness, blindness and becoming completely dependent as well as bed ridden. No parent wants to go through this and I would wish it on no-one. The family following this diagnosis will never be the same again as the devastating news to follow is soul destroying. Vanishing White Matter is currently incurable, so the child has a death sentence with life expectancy commonly being 5 to 10 years from onset. However in our lifetime this condition could be stopped in its tracks by the amazing work and research being conducted by Prof Orna Elroy-Stein at the University of Tel Aviv. Her work is showing true progress but is hampered by lack of funds for specialist

ST AIDAN’S NEWS New Academic Year June has been another busy month (aren’t they all) with a whole host of different activities taking place at Saint Aidan’s. The month marked the start of our new academic year, with each of the year groups moving up and beginning their new studies. Our new Year 10 students started on their GCSE courses, whilst the new Year 11 students were able to don their black uniforms for the first time. Proctors Training Day We also had our Proctors Training day, preparing our senior students for their duties around school. They took part in a series of team-building exercises, designed to test their skills and qualities in advance of their new role. The students performed really well and should be great ambassadors for the school. Primary School Transition We were fortunate enough to be invited into four local primary schools, Thornton, Stanah, Royles Brook and Baines Endowed to work in partnership with local Thornton churches. The visits were designed to help Year 6 students prepare mentally and spiritually for the big move that they are about to make to secondary school. We hope our visits helped. In the first week of July, all the students due to start at Saint Aidan’s in September (almost 180 of them) spent an evening and then a full day in school, trying out lessons and meeting staff.

We are incredibly proud of their achievements! Healthy Eating Week The school also embraced national and international events during the month. Healthy Eating Week was marked by a series of form breakfasts designed around healthier options. The school really took the week to heart and, hopefully, learnt some very important habits about their eating patterns. she recommends bringing them in when the weather is frosty.

Using only the top layer of the serviette, an area of the pot is coated with special glue, Modge Podge, and one of the cut outs is applied and pressed gently onto the glued area until any air bubbles are removed and so on until a design is completed on the pot - sometimes with a little hand painted addition.

A very different and most enjoyable presentation and we were able to purchase some of these lovely items.

On completion, the design is given another coat of glue and left to dry. Sometimes the design is completed by a hand painted name etc.

Our next meeting is on Thurs 28th July, when Chantelle Seaborn will speak to us about ‘The Canal and River Trust’. The competition is to ‘Name a Canal Boat’

When the pots are dry a top coat of the special varnish is used to complete the process. As well as using serviettes, wooden stamps can be used with emulsion paint. The pots are all checked for cracks when Yvonne receives them and are suitable for outdoor use but

GARSTANG AND DISTRICT LIONS Lions were pleased to have helped out once again at this year’s very successful Garstang Children’s Festival and Catterall Gala. They also donated their marquee free to St. Michael’s Gala as their hall is still not available following the flooding. The Lions will also be putting up their marquee free on the 3rd July for the Cheshire Homes charity open day - Oaklands is on Dimples Lane, Garstang.

All the Guides, senior section and leaders are great ambassadors abroad for Girl Guiding and our town. Lastly at our June meeting Lions agreed to continue sponsoring ‘Garstang in Bloom’. We all owe so much to the dedicated bloomers who make our town the envy of others. As always the Lions welcome new members or anyone who is just interested in seeing what they do.

Kepple Lane Fun Day - Lions will once again be supporting and helping on the 18th September and will also donate the use of their marquee.

Information is available on the web site at www.garstanglions.co.uk or just speak to a member or simply come along to a meeting 3rd Tuesday of the month in the Royal Oak at 8:00pm - look for anyone in a dark blue fleece or light blue polo shirt - don’t worry - it’s not compulsory to get ‘dressed up’ if you join!)

Lions actively support our local guides and scouts and are donating £100 to allow a local guider to gain a new international experience.

The other amazing thing they can be used for is making your own garden fertilizer.

These nutrients, along with Vitamins A, B1, B5, C, D, E, and K, combine together to create a superb tonic for the garden.

Who would have thought that this annoyingly brutish plant that jumps out at unsuspecting toddlers causing embarrassingly high pitched crying all the way back home, could have such an interesting culinary use. Toddlers across Europe and North America, North Africa and parts of Asia learn quickly to steer clear of Urtica Dioica on account of its vicious sting.

70

The nutrients in stinging nettle fertilizer include minerals, flavonoids, essential amino acids, proteins and vitamins. A nettle leaf plant food contains Chlorophyll, Nitrogen, Iron, Potassium, Copper, Zinc, Magnesium and Calcium.

So what’s not to like? Well the smell actually but if you can put this to one side your garden will love you for it. Fill a large jar or bucket with the nettle leaves and stems, bruising the foliage first. Weigh down the nettles with a brick or paving stone and then cover with water. Only fill threequarters of the bucket with water to allow room for the foam that will be created during the brewing process. Ideally use rain water and set the bucket in a semi-sunny area. Leave the mix for one to three weeks to ferment, stirring every couple of days until it stops bubbling. Finally, strain out the nettles and dilute the concoction at one-part fertilizer to 10 parts water for watering plants or 1:20 for direct foliar application. The undiluted mix makes an excellent organic herbicide and can be added to the compost bin to stimulate decomposition. Warning - tomatoes and roses don’t enjoy the high iron levels in nettle fertilizer. Oh yes – and don’t forget to wear your gloves otherwise you too could be wailing like our two-year-old. Happy Gardening! Alison Tarpey-Black 07738 515846 / (01253) 810039

POLICE NOTES Well the sunshine made a short appearance this month, followed by very heavy downpours of rain. Please be careful whilst driving as there have been reports of small localised flooding in the over Wyre area. Whilst enjoying the football this month please don’t be tempted to have a drink then drive home. The Garstang and Over Wyre Neighbourhood Policing Team are carrying out speed checks and breath checks on the road side throughout the area. Over the last couple of weeks the area has many events taking place, including the Myerscough Open day, Calder Vale children’s Festival and Billsborough Children’s Festival to name a few. All events have been policed by our team, with no incidents reported. As for what has been happening in the area, there has been an increase in car damages in the Garstang area. Please ensure your car is kept secure overnight and any damages are reported on 101.

Our present President Anniemarie’s chosen charity for her year is ‘Mary’s Meals’ which brings hope to a hungry world. It sets up school feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education. The idea is simple. ‘Mary’s Meals’ provide a daily meal in a place of learning to attract chronically poor children into the classroom where they receive an education, which can set them free from poverty in later life. On Sat 18th June Anniemarie opened her garden (and cake tins!) to all members and friends for a ‘Donations’ Coffee morning. We enjoyed Fresh air, Friendship and Fabulous cakes. We also raised £82.00 which is

HAMBLETON WI After returning at tea time from a hectic fun filled four days in Dublin the Hambleton WI celebrated the Queen’s birthday with canapés and champagne and a superb talk by Sally Naden of BBC Radio Lancashire. Slim, elegant, standing very straight in a pair of new black, strappy high heels, Sally told of her life as a dancer then radio presenter. She was apparently a wayward teenager in Bromley, South East London, living with her family, causing no end of trouble but she persuaded her parents to send her to the Italia Conti Stage School where she had a ball. It was like the film ‘Fame’. Although she had to have school lessons as well as dance and drama her teachers were all out of work actors. She loved the dance classes, which is why she stands so straight now, always pulling in the tummy and bottom muscles, Arlene Philips was their tutor just starting new dance techniques leading to ‘Hot

Gossip’. Some of Sally’s classmates are now famous, such as Bonnie Langford and Tracey Ullman. A few seasons in Rep brought her in to contact with Celia Imrie, Norman Wisdom and Tommy Cooper. Sally then had a season as a Tiller Girl at Morecambe Winter Gardens going on to the Isle of Man where she met her husband to be at the ‘Summerland’ complex in 1973. They noticed smoke at the back of their theatre then fire and it only took eight minutes for the fire to spread from end to end, a large glass pane was smashed and they managed to scramble out. However, exits were chained and unfortunately 150 people lost their lives. After getting married and daughter Diane arrived Sally became a full time mum. After twelve years of being at home she thought she would get an education and enrolled at Preston Polytechnic where a lady called Zylpha persuaded her to take a foundation

BE PREPARED FOR FLOODING There is still funding available to those who experienced flooding in December, so I’d like to encourage anyone affected to look into applying for grants for their homes, businesses and communities. Government grants of up to £5,000 are available to homeowners and businesses to help fund measures which improve a property’s resilience or resistance to flooding, over and above repairs that would normally be covered by insurance. Visit www.wyre. gov.uk/floodinggrantscheme to apply or call (01253) 891000. The Community Foundation for Lancashire has launched a Strengthening Communities Fund to support voluntary and community organisations who wish to put plans into action to help them cope better with future storms and flooding and to be able to respond pro-actively to emergencies and natural disasters in their community. Grants will be awarded to initiatives that help prepare for future flooding, long term community rebuilding projects, community led flood defence work, projects initiated as a result of the flooding or community projects that build on the community spirit and projects that leave a lasting legacy in the community. Voluntary, community organisations and registered charities, including local residents groups, social enterprises and Parish Councils can apply. Find out more at lancsfoundation.org.uk. Wyre Flood Forum Wyre’s Flood Forum brings together the key people involved in flood risk management; community members, Wyre Council, Lancashire County Council, United Utilities and the Environment Agency. The forum meets every three months to discuss flood risk in the borough and issues raised are referred to the Wyre Making Space for Water Group (MSfW), a partnership of technical officers from the key agencies who

GP GAS Friendly & Reliable

Members of the newly formed flood action groups for St Michael’s and Churchtown attended the last forum meeting in June. They reported that they had been checking if watercourses in their areas were being properly maintained, and encouraging farmers and landowners to keep ditches and land drains clear and free of obstructions, as well as discussing areas of concern with officers from the authorities.

Central Heating Service

It was good to hear that members from Churchtown had attended a conference on the recent floods in Pickering and hope to organise a similar event to discuss local flood causes and solutions. The forum is a great way to share information and find out how others are dealing with issues that we are all experiencing.

BEN WALLACE MP Many of you have kindly been in touch to offer support after the death of Jo Cox MP. Jo was newly elected and was a kind and genuine person. From time to time most MPs are threatened. This is mainly by people suffering from mental illness and not angry voters! But at the end of the day politics is about people. Politicians who don’t like people have no business being in politics. I enjoy my constituency and the company of the people I serve. Rest assured that won’t change and I will always be around to meet you or see what help I can offer. It has been another very busy month both in Westminster and the constituency. I have been continuing to travel around the constituency visiting businesses to assist in any way I can. Recently I met with a local

business, GB Energy, to discuss the impact of energy competition and I am continuing to work with them to ensure that smaller firms can compete fairly in order to supply the cheapest prices possible to consumers. If you are a regular reader of this column you will know how keen I am that the Government and all concerned work with local communities in order to minimise the impact of flooding in the future. I have recently met with local people who have lived in the area for many years and have witnessed flooding many times. It was very interesting to hear their views and it is important that these views are passed on to the relevant bodies. I am continuing to meet with all agencies to press home the need for action on this important issue.

As well as being busy within the constituency I have also been working hard in London, meeting with business groups and charities amongst others. One such meeting was with representatives from BAE Systems. With over 6,000 constituents employed by BAE, I regularly hold meetings and discussions with FREE DESIGN representatives to ensure jobs in our area.

We are very lucky to have so many outstanding schools in our area and I know how concerning funding is. I have been raising the case of funding for Lancashire Schools and have arranged a meeting with Lancashire MPs and the Schools Minister to fight for the best outcome for Lancashire Schools. I am sure many of you know that Lancashire County Council has made a number of recommendations to reduce services which includes libraries. I have been contacted by a large number of constituents and I share concerns about these proposals. The current recommendation for Wyre is to close Thornton Library but maintain Poulton and Garstang Libraries. I also note that just

I believe that this is possible and indeed was proposed by the Conservative Group at Lancashire County Council. This proposal was unfortunately defeated.

been organised. It will take place on Sun 17th July with participants meeting at the Shovels Inn Car Park at 7:00pm.

Please remember these are recommendations and your input is very important. I would encourage you to take part in the consultation which runs until Sunday 14th August. Hard copies of the consultation can be completed at a local library. Alternatively you can submit your views online on the following website: www.snapsurveys.com/wh/ SURVEY_PREVIEW.asp?k=146339536029

This measure has been taken following several complaints about drug use and dealing on the park and vehicles being left on the car park overnight.

I also hold regular surgeries. If you would like to book an appointment please send me an email or call my Office at the House of Commons on 0207 219 5804. FLEETWOOD FLYERS Walking Football Club Coming to the end of our May programme we have had a very successful trip to FC United of Manchester Stadium in which we only had one outfield goal scored against us. We reached the final of the competition finishing 0-0 before losing out on penalties. This was the unusual amount of eighteen shots each only for FC United to clinch the game with their last kick! We returned with the Runners Up trophy as a consolation, having said that it will take pride of place in our trophy cabinet it being our first one. Good performances from Kevin Clarkson our Captain and George Greenall who scored an absolutely cracking goal to win us the semi final, although we have to congratulate the whole squad on the day. On Monday 23rd May we enjoyed an afternoon session with children from Manor Park Primary school. We were involved with their diversity week showing the children and involving them in some of our drills. A very uplifting experience making us realise the pressures the teachers have to overcome. Tues 31st May we entertained Blackpool Senior Seasiders giving fringe players a chance to get used to competitive games. We had an hour’s play in four sessions and came out winners at 6-4. The main thing was the enjoyment the guys get from the game. We hope to make this a monthly session just to give as many players as possible the opportunity to play a slightly more moderate game in a competitive environment. On Sun 5th June we hosted the first round of matches in Walking Football United Summer League . We played Blackpool and Blackburn twice but only had success against Blackburn with a hard earned 2-1 win against a very strong side. Our games against Blackpool also was very close in both games 1-0 and 2-1 respectively. We finished bottom this time

FLEETWOOD FLYERS (cont) round but will go into next month’s games with plenty of expectations. I would like to thank all who had any involvement in Sunday`s organisations, especially Peter who provided us with a lovely spread for after the games. Another friendly this time on Tues 14th June against Lytham WFC. Lytham brought two teams so we split our team into two groups of six both to play fifteen minutes each way. Our first attempt ended in disaster. We lost 7-0 and never looked like posing any threat to their goal keeper although our team was severely weakened. I must mention if our keeper Mark Gamble hadn`t had a great game in goal it could have been a cricket score . The second game went to plan with our stronger team and they won easily. Although it was only 1-0 they never looked like troubling our defence and an excellent goal from Mike Hill proved to be the winner. Again our thanks to our magnificent chef Peter who made some excellent food for after the game which disappeared very quickly. At these friendlies we meet some great guys who love football and play in the correct manner. You never seem to forget a face you have played against and often see an opposing player while you are out doing the shopping and stop for a catch up on your respective teams. We are now using our Wednesday session to involve more playing time for those who just require to play games of football for the first hour then going into more detail for those wanting to compete to progress to the competitions we are entering . We hope this will give people an enjoyable day of football. Contacts if you are interested in joining our ever growing activity are :Jason Sharp 07834 581 414 info@fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk

THE BAKER Now I’m not a natural baker, not like me dear old Mum. She turned out pies to feast your eyes, and cakes and puddings plum. I tried my best to follow the recipes she lent. But nothing turned out like it should, cakes in the middle bent My pastry came out soggy, my souffles did not rise. The sponge cake made for birthday boy fell flat before his eyes. My drop scones would not drop, my shortcake was too long, And carrot cake just wouldn’t bake, me mixing must be wrong. I’ve watched Nigella and her ilk, HER pancakes never stick. No flat, burnt offerings from her. She makes me ruddy sick! I had a go at making bread, turned out so

dense and hard I threw it out for birds to eat, the ones perched in our yard. There came a shout from hubby then, “Have you thrown out that bread? I saw a blackbird eating it and now the poor thing’s dead. And look at that bird over there, he doesn’t look too sound. He’s ate too much of ‘heavy bread’ and can’t get off the ground!” So I’m giving up on baking now, ‘cause failure never suits.I’ve had enough of Jamie O. and all those T.V. cooks. I’ll buy my bread and fat plump cakes and pies so full and sweet. And let folk think I’ve baked them all and kitchen will stay neat! JM
