Entrance to the field is £2 Join us for our annual Gala through the picturesque villages of Preesall and Knott End with our fabulous coloured floats and costumes. We start at The Esplanade and end at Preesall Park where we have our annual fair and field events. If anybody would like a stall on the field or to put a float in the parade, please contact the Secretary by the closing date, Thurs 30th June. Gala Theme this year is ‘TV Themes’ so join us in your fancy dress or your homemade float. Judging will take place before the procession starts. We will also be having a ‘TV Themed’ Scarecrow Competition with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize so get those scarecrows ready for going up around the villages. Anyone wishing to be entered for judging please send your name and address with contact details to the Secretary or fill in an application form and a Judge will visit all scarecrow locations during Gala week. Closing date for entries is Sat 2nd July. All scarecrows should be up between two weeks from Sat 25th June and at least one week from 2nd July for judging. You don’t have to enter the competition. You can still make one and display it in your garden and it doesn’t have to be a TV Theme - it can be anything you want it to be. It can be your favourite TV Character, whoever that may be, so let’s build those scarecrows and see how many we can get. LCC FUNDING CUTS Preesall Youth and Community Centre and the Over Wyre Children’s Centres have been ear-marked for closure by Lancashire County Council - but Knott End Library looks set to stay. Campaigners have reacted angrily to the news, arguing the loss of a Youth Centre will force young people on to the streets with nowhere to go. Although the Library looks to have been reprieved, residents are being urged to keep up the pressure to ensure it remains. The Council has announced the closure of buildings and services across Lancashire as it wrestles to save £200 million by 2020. A consultation process will take place to enable the public to comment on the proposals ahead of the final decision in the autumn. The future of the Fleetwood-Knott End ferry remains uncertain. Discussions are taking place between Wyre Council and Preesall

Town Council and the ferry operators. Residents have also reacted angrily over the loss of Sunday and evening bus services provided by the 2C Knott End to Blackpool bus, claiming these are leaving people imprisoned in their community. A Stalmine resident said the reduced service has hit older people and people with disabilities particularly hard, and left people without a means of visiting their relatives in hospital. She warned the cuts would put additional pressure on the ambulance service to take people to the hospital or DropIn Centre in a non-emergency illness. ‘Without a car, older people and those who are disabled or sick cannot get out at all. A return taxi fare on Sundays from Knott End to Blackpool is £56,’ said the resident. ‘I met an elderly, frail lady who was very distressed because her husband is in Blackpool Victoria Hospital being treated for a serious heart condition and she can’t visit him on Sundays.’ Residents are being urged to make their views known during the public consultation, and by continuing to write to LCC Chief Executive Jo Turton. Copies of the public consultation document are available from Knott End Library and online at www.lancashire.gov.uk Angela Norris

OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY First of all, I’d like to invite you to our Afternoon Tea on Sat 4th June from 1:00pm - 4:00pm at St. Bernard’s Hall, Hackensall Road. The children’s Painting Competition winners are being judged as well as painting demonstrations, various stalls and of course a lovely afternoon tea included at £3.50 (£1 for children). The in-door classes have now finished for the summer but we thought you would like to hear how the last few classes went on. We all appraised our paintings as a group giving each other useful tips. Another week Graham Lowe painted us a tawny owl in acrylic at short notice following a cancellation. He is a well known wildlife artist and we practised this style ourselves until the end of term. The full day’s oil painting workshop with Harry Caunce went very well. This was a new venture for us which we hope to repeat.

Out of doors painting has started with a trip to Garstang Riverside. We would like more members to try this as it’s good practise. On the last week at the centre we collected exhibition paintings and shared nibbles and cakes. Here are the dates for our activities: Sat 4th June 1:00pm Summer Fair at St Bernard’s Hall. All Welcome. Tues 7th June 1:30pm Outdoor Painting at Knott End Ferry. Tues 5th July 1:30pm Outdoor Painting at Stanah, Thornton. Tues 2nd Aug 1:30pm Outdoor Painting at Hambleton Riverside. Hoping to see you! Sandra Langhorne (01253) 813739

PILLING LANE WI

OVER WYRE GARDENING CLUB

Our speaker in May was Neil Hendrie who gave a very interesting talk on ‘Who Killed Jill Dando?’ The meeting was well attended and gave us lots to think about the responsibility that the Jury Service has.

The speaker at the May meeting was Alan Schofield who for the past 35 years has been a commercial grower of organic vegetables.

Our speaker on Wed 1st June is Pat Ashcroft, her subject ‘Artic Dogs’ and she will talk of her experiences from her trip which she did for charity. On Wed 15th June at 2:00pm we are holding a garden party in the grounds of St Oswald’s Church, Preesall ( inside if wet ) to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday and her long reign. There will be cream teas and various stalls – tickets £3.50 from any WI committee member. We have a varied programme for 2016. Why not come along and join us at one of our meetings? You will be made most welcome. Eva Cocker (01253) 811784

Alan’s first experience of working in agriculture was during the hot summer of 1976 when he worked in the fruit orchards of Kent. This convinced him that agriculture was where he wanted to work and on returning to the north west he found a job with a local grower. However by 1981 he was becoming increasingly concerned about the chemicals which were being sprayed on crops. This led to him leaving the job, joining the Soil Association and, in 1982, finding a job with an organic grower. From this came the development of his organic nursery in Pilling. In 1992, to reduce their dependency on the supermarkets, he came up with the idea of the Organic Vegetable Box scheme which allowed them to deliver whatever produce was seasonal to their customers. Alan is Chairman of the Organic Growers Alliance and explained how working with nature and the climate can eliminate the need for pesticides. This was a most interesting and thought provoking talk which created some lively discussion. The next meeting is Mon 20th June when Marguerite Hughes will talk about ‘Attracting Wildlife to the Garden’. The meeting will be held at 7:30pm in St Bernard’s Church Hall, Hackensall Road, Knott End. Joyce Wilson (01253) 813519

DOWN TO EARTH Well the greenhouse is bursting with germinating seeds, last year’s newly created asparagus bed is producing delicious spears, the beans and tomatoes are starting to produce flowers and I’m still dissatisfied. Why? I’m blaming our drama queen of a toddler and her small long suffering brother for only having the time to grow edible produce – the joy of sowing Cosmos, Aster, Rudbeckia and a myriad of other colourful border delights has totally passed me by this year. So if you’re in the same boat, what can we do? One option is to consider buying some autumn-flowering bulbs, corms and tubers and planting them in during June and July. You can even plant them in August but the sooner they go in the more chance they have of developing a good root system to help them produce spectacular flowers that will

keep us smiling well into October. When buying them don’t stint on quantity – without a doubt you’ll lose the will to live when you come to plant up four hundred hardy Cyclamen but the display will be worth it a few months down the line. Too few bulbs and you’ll hardly notice they’re there. When you come to digging them in, most need to be covered in at least twice their own depth of soil. Dig a wide hole and throw in a few handfuls of grit to improve drainage. Then arrange groups of bulbs (flat end down, pointy end up), in the hole and cover. Plant them in groups of at least five to make sure they can shout about being there. DOWN TO EARTH (cont) woodland plants that self-seed easily and are useful for ground cover. They prefer dry spots under trees and large shrubs. Remember to plant them so the tops of their corms are level with the ground. Another corker is Gladiolus Murielae, a fragrant and delicate plant with large white flowers and dark purple centres. They have long stems so make sure they go towards the back of a border. Gardeners who don’t have a drama queen of a toddler and a long suffering small brother will dig these up after they’ve flowered and store them in the shed or garage. I’m inclined to just replace them annually. Nerine Lilies don’t have to be dug up – indeed they can be left in the ground to overwinter before bursting to life again. Each bulb produces a star burst of five or six bright pink flowers. They prefer to be planted near the surface, with their tips just showing above

the ground and they like to be crowded so squeeze them all in to a cramped space. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that the Amarcrinum is a cross between an Amaryllis and Crinum. These bulbs produce highly-scented trumpet-like flowers for a few magnificent weeks in late summer. Plant them with the neck of the bulb near the surface in a sunny, well-drained site. Finally – colchicums or autumn crocus. Look out for ‘Waterlily’ which boasts double flowers in a fetching lilac-pink. There are many more to choose from so make a cuppa and enjoy a trawl through the interwebthing or pootle off to your nearest garden centre and get someone else to make the tea for you. Happy Gardening! Alison Tarpey-Black (01253) 810039

IS SUGAR KILLING YOU? My answer to that question is simple... yes!

what sugar is).

As far as I’m concerned, sugar is the main reason for the frightening increase in obesity, diabetes and other horrible diseases such as cancer and Alzheimers. There are other factors but above all else I am sorry to say that this stuff is highly addictive, toxic and provides your body with no useful nutrients.

Stop putting this poison in your tea or coffee and seriously, after one week of detox and getting used to actually tasting the drink, you will never want sugar in it again.

Unfortunately, sugar causes metabolic mayhem in your body – seriously deranging your hormone balance. I hear people say they are overweight because of hormone imbalances – this is not quite true. Yes, they have hormone imbalances but this is caused by eating sugar and that is why the weight problem has spiraled out of control. I implore you all to turn your back on this insidious and nasty product. It is also worth noting that if you have a sweet tooth this is almost always caused by eating too much sugar and refined carbohydrates (which is

If you get sweet cravings then what you are eating is throwing your body’s blood sugars out of balance, start by upping your good fats (butter, olive oil, coconut oil) and reducing your grains, cereals, pasta and breads. Eat vegetables, nuts, seeds, berrys, small amounts of fruit, fish and grass fed meats. Supplementing with high quality Chromium will also help your cravings whilst helping to burn fat and regulate blood sugars (Pharmanord produce an excellent Chromium supplement). Please bear in mind that the sneaky processed food manufacturers will manipulate you by giving sugar many different names such as: Sucrose, Maltose, Dextrose, Fructose,

IS SUGAR KILLING YOU? (cont) Glucose, Galactose, Lactose, High fructose corn syrup, Glucose solids, Cane juice, Dehydrated cane juice, Cane juice solids, Cane juice crystals, Dextrin, Maltodextrin, Dextran, Barley malt, Beet sugar, Corn syrup, Corn syrup solids, Caramel, Buttered syrup, Carob syrup, Brown sugar, Date sugar, Malt syrup, Diatase, Diatastic malt, Fruit juice, Fruit juice concentrate, Dehydrated fruit juice, Fruit juice crystals, Golden syrup, Turbinado, Sorghum syrup, Refiner’s syrup, Ethyl maltol, Maple syrup, Yellow sugar All of the above have the exact same toxic effect on you as sugar so stay away from them. Note that there will often be two or three of the above in a processed food, each one being say, five grams, therefore, it appears at the end of the ingredients making it seem you have a low sugar product when you actually have loads of sugar in different guises! These people do not care for your health…and you

are being slowly poisoned. We quite rightly look on in horror at the number of people we know with cancer or Alzheimers disease and fear it may come our way. It appears to be an indiscriminate matter of luck but I fear this is not quite so – we are being conned into convenience foods as the way forward but this convenience comes at enormous cost both to our wallets but more importantly to our health. Scientists are now starting to call Alzheimers disease the third diabetes and there is a gradual realisation of how we are being poisoned by processed foods. I stand by my mantra that time in the kitchen is never wasted time…please start cooking again, or learn to cook if you cannot. It could be the single most powerful way you prevent chronic diseases and live a long healthy life. Nick Tofalos

‘FERRY TALES’ Over Wyre residents are being invited to share their memories of the Fleetwood-Knott End Ferry as part of a community writing and reminiscence project. ‘Ferry Tales’ is being launched to celebrate the ferry’s unique heritage and its important role in the lives of generations of Over Wyre families. Residents are invited to come along to Knott End Library, to share their stories and contribute to the development of a community booklet recalling the ferry’s past. The ferry has a colourful history stretching back more than 100 years. Many people have interesting tales to tell of travelling across the river to get to school or work, and we need to capture these stories for future generations. Workshops will take place at Knott End Library on Thurs 16th June and Thurs 14th July both from 2:00pm - 3:00pm.

28

These will be informal, friendly sessions with pens and paper available to write down your stories. You might even want to write a poem or produce a creative piece of writing. But even if you would rather not write, you can still come along and tell us your stories. Refreshments will be available after the sessions. There is no need to book – just turn up! Angela Norris

ROCKITS CHARITY EVENING Thank you to everyone who attended the Rockits Charity Evening. We had a great night and raised over £2300 which will be split equally between both The Neonatal and Children’s Ward at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Nigel Hind

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY) Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund The Brathay Windermere Marathon & events with The CRY Babies As I’m writing this, myself, Nicola Clark, and four of the CRY Babies, Angela Foster, Clare Bugeja, Sarah Sutcliffe and Anne Whittingham have yet to complete our marathon. Yet once this is published we will have completed it. Zoe Edmondson has already completed her mammoth task of a whole 26.2 miles. The rest of us are all still putting the effort into our training, so if we’re not ready now we never will be. We must thank our families for understanding the time we have had to spend away from them whilst we have been training for it. We are currently still fundraising and each week more is added to our total. The generosity and support that we have had has been gratefully received and is rather humbling. The CRY Babies would like you

to know how thankful we are. While none of us actually knew Matt, we now feel he is a special part of our team, along with his parents Barry and Paula. This now brings me to our recent fundraiser, and in two days we have raised a massive £1252.06. The total so far comes in at £3,959.26 (with gift aid £4,388.81) - way beyond what we were expecting. The money raised this weekend has been done over two days - Friday night Angela, Clare, Zoe and I went around the local pubs in our running gear and on Saturday all The Cry Babies were outside Booths of Garstang selling donated cakes. If you came down to see us you’ll also have seen the CRY Babies taking it in turns to pound a treadmill. You see the training never stops and people kindly donating makes every stride so much easier. Even our children came to spend the day with us fundraising. We would also like to thank Barry, Paula, Sarah and Zoe who came to help us on the day to ensure everything ran smoothly. Thank you. If you would like to sponsor us our just giving page is at http://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/team/CRYBabies or you can call in at The Fish And Chip Plaice on Hazelhurst Drive where you can fill in a sponsor form. I cannot express how thankful we are to you. We shall now see you on the other side of our completed marathon. Nicola Clark and The CRY Babies Catterall Gala Sat 4th June

FLEETWOOD TOWN FLYERS At the end of April we have had some atrocious weather for our sessions but it hasn`t deterred the amount of people turning out. We have had several new members come on board and all seem very keen. Hope we get some better weather in this next month and it encourages more people to come and try walking football . What used to be our weekly Friday session against Blackpool has now been turned into an open session and everyone is invited to come along and join in. We start at 5:00pm and finish at 6:00pm. On most Friday night`s we get three games of about 15 minutes each with a break inbetween each game. No matter what your footballing skills, just come along and enjoy a kick about. On Sun 8th May we hosted our first tournament, the 2016 Walking Football United National Tournament, Lancashire Region. A lot of hard work went into the organising of the event and we couldn`t have hoped for a better day, where the sun shone from start to finish. Although we didn’t win through to the next stages we all enjoyed a great, well organised event. On 14th May we travelled the short distance to Blackpool to play in another regional competition, this time the Football League’s National Tournament, Northern Region heats. Again we suffered heartache as we lost out to Bolton in the semi-final of the Plate Competition but nevertheless all the lads enjoyed another great day out in glorious sunny weather. Another plus for the club was the return of Paul Wright, who is back with us after a long term illness. If you are interested in joining in with us please contact either Jason Sharp, 07834 581 414 or email info@fleetwoodwalkingfooty. co.uk

OVER WYRE BEEKEEPING And we’re off! The weather has come good and both bees and beekeepers have exploded into action. In my hives the worker bees are feeding each queen bee more food and she in return has increased her rate of egg laying dramatically. Those of you with chickens will understand, though your girls won’t be laying 1500 eggs a day. In addition the queens have started producing the male, or drone bees so they will want to swarm soon. Before I learnt about bees this term used to make me think of clouds of vicious stinging bees. But actually swarming is the natural way that a colony of bees as a whole reproduces. Once big enough the queen produces first drones then a few weeks later she and the workers produce female eggs in downward facing cells. The queens have nothing to do with bringing up babies, the workers feed the developing queens

richer food more frequently than they feed young worker bees. This is the royal jelly often found in expensive cosmetics. And an egg that just as easily might have become a worker is transformed into a queen. Often there can be twenty or so peanutshaped queen cells in a hive preparing to swarm. Certain workers start to look for a new home in which the old queen can set Photo courtesy of British up a new hive. Once Beekeepers Assoc Gallery a home is found around half the workers fly out with the old queen, to this new site. They leave the old queen’s daughters, the developing worker brood and their nurse bees to rebuild the old colony. It’s rather what we all hope will happen with our offspring really, except it’s mum who heads off

Both clubs have club apiaries; sites where members and guests can come to learn the craft of beekeeping from more experienced members. swarms. I don’t want to lose them as not only could this alarm my neighbours but losing half my bees will mean there is unlikely to be enough honey for me at the end of the summer. Now the local beekeeping clubs swing into action too. We meet all year round but all of us look forward to the summer meets, a chance

If visiting one of the area’s lovely parks or recreational areas, please remember to take your litter home with you. Volunteers work very hard to keep these areas clean and tidy for everyone to use.

Use window locks so access can’t be gained through open windows, lock them when you are in another part of your house and lock your house up at the front if you are in your back garden.

There have been reports of graffiti, anti-social behaviour and underage drinking occurring at Kepple Lane Park, Scorton MUGA Park, the Millennium Green and Catterall Village Hall. submitted and any criminal offences will be dealt with robustly. The parks, play grounds and open spaces should be enjoyed sensibly by everyone!

We held our annual Charter Night at the end of April. Heather Slater was the speaker and told us about her experiences as a Nanny in Saudi Arabia. At the end of the talk she did us a little Saudi dance and got one of our members to join her. Members from other Inner Wheel clubs in the area and friends helped us swell the numbers and made it a very enjoyable evening.

Recent Over Wyre crimes include the theft of a spinning bike worth £2000 from Preesall Fire Station and a break in at the no longer used Nat West Bank at Knott End. Some person is apparently taking delight at wrecking the flower display along School Lane at Pilling and scattering the road safety cones! This is believed to have happened on Wednesday nights. We have had reports of drug taking behind the Catholic Church in Hambleton and on the park. Anyone witnessing any suspicious activity are encouraged to phone it in at the time on 101. Fighting For Wyre Dairy Farmers In Parliament I have raised the issue of our farmers not getting a fair price for their milk. A food-secure Britain needs British farmers to make a living. Milk prices plummeted in March this year. They were at their lowest since 2009, with farm-gate prices as low as 16p per litre. This comes at a time when British dairy incomes are dropping. They are forecast to fall by almost half this year. I was disappointed that there was nothing for dairy farmers in this year’s Budget. I have asked the Government what action they will now take to work with supermarkets, retailers and farmers to ensure a future for the British dairy industry. In response I have been told the Government have introduced tax averaging across five years to help farmers who face a tax bill. They can average it against difficult years and that they are meeting retailers to try to improve the contracts which they

CAT SMITH MP (cont) offer and encourage them to offer more aligned contracts and to source more dairy production. I know this is not enough and that local farmers want to see more action so I will be keeping the pressure on Government on behalf of local farmers. Autism Also in Parliament I have spoken about autism. 99% of British people have heard of autism but very few understand what autism is. A cross-party debate called by backbench MPs had contributions from MPs of all parties concerned about diagnosis, waiting times, lack of employment for autistic people and whether or not schools were teaching autistic youngsters appropriately. There was a real cross-party consensus that we need to do better as a society for autistic people. I mentioned three constituents who had written to me about autism, allowing autistic voices to be heard in Parliament. I hope that out of that debate we can make schools, employment and society better aware and better at supporting everyone. Change Ahead For Perhaps Not Now…

Schools?

In the last issue of Focus I wrote about my opposition to the Government’s plans to force all our schools into becoming academies – if they want to or not. It seems the Government have heeded the warning from local communities, especially those with small rural schools, and have rowed back on this. Thank you to all the parents, school governors and teachers who got in touch with me about your concerns. It seems our collective voices were heard. Speaking Of Schools It was a pleasure to visit St Aidan’s Church of England High School in Preesall this month. I started my morning with a ‘question and answer’ session with Year 8 pupils asking all kinds of questions from why do our Councils have less money to why aren’t wild animals banned in circuses. After my grilling members of the School Council gave me a tour of the classrooms and facilities at the school. It seems school dinners are much nicer than when I had them! This month I have also met children from Ellel St John’s Primary School and I am visiting Tatham Fells Primary School, one of our smaller schools in the area. Pot Holes I’ve met with Lancashire County Council to ensure Wyre’s potholes are dealt with by their increased number of repair teams – it’s a priority for the Council, who despite seeing

about three-quarters of their pothole fund cut from Government, have managed to increase the numbers working on potholes locally. Spot a hole – report it online: www. lancashire.gov.uk/roads-parking-andtravel/fault-search.aspx or phone 0300 123 6701 How To Get In Touch As the MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood I can only take up individual cases if you live in my constituency. That includes Knott End, Preesall, Pilling, Cockerham, Forton, Scorton and Dolphinholme. If you aren’t sure if I’m your MP just remember to include your full postal address. To meet with me to discuss any issue, local or national, please phone my office on (01253) 490440 to book an appointment in one of my regular advice surgeries. Cat Smith MP

May has been a very busy month in Parliament as the first Parliamentary session of the new Government comes to an end and the State Opening of Parliament on Wed 18 May marked the start of the new session. It was a delight to welcome Churchtown’s Festival Rose Queen, Ellie Singleton, to Parliament this month. Unfortunately for Ellie and her family, the weather was better in Lancashire than London during their trip. I hope the sun makes an appearance for all the upcoming Festivals and Galas, although I know from first-hand experience that the weather is not always kind to us in Lancashire!

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) My mail bag has been full with many issues including a number of planning concerns. On planning, I have recently met with the Planning Authority, Wyre Council in order to highlight the many concerns of residents throughout the borough. Driving around the borough, I continue to share resident’s concerns about the state of the Highways and the local Highway infrastructure. I am also meeting with Highways England shortly in order to discuss the A585. The issue of buses and Lancashire County Council’s complete withdrawal of bus services continues to be a matter of serious concern. Living rurally has many benefits but also presents challenges. I know how important these services are and please be assured that I am continuing to make representations to the County Council and local bus companies to try and secure alternative services and routes.

provides an amazing service and I was humbled to visit again recently and meet some of the staff who do such an amazing job in very difficult circumstances. I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries covering a wide range of issues. Please remember if you would like to attend one the most effective way to contact me is by e-mail, with a brief description of the issues and your contact details. Although often I can address issues without the need for a meeting. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 02072 195 804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672977, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. Ben Wallace MP

Farmers have been contacting me about many issues and I am making representations to the Secretary of State and Rural Payments Agency, continuing to push the Government to ensure local farmers get a fair deal and receive the support they require. Please do contact me if I can be of any assistance to you. I have also enjoyed visiting schools recently discussing many issues including testing and standards in schools. I have said many times, we are extremely fortunate here to have so many outstanding schools in our area. I believe it is my role to listen and pass on any concerns from schools to Ministers. It was a pleasure to visit Garstang St Thomas’ year 4 class to discuss democracy following an invitation from a pupil at the school. SEA BANK HOUSE A TRUE HOME-FROM-HOME

I could tell you all about Sea Bank House and its facilities as if I was describing a hotel, for example the beautiful Individual rooms, some with sea views, the designer bathrooms, Wi-Fi, HD televisions, telephones and the glorious sea views from the lounges... However when I was searching for a room for my own mother all those years ago, I do not remember any of those concerns being uppermost in my mind. What I do remember is the fear of making the wrong decision, whether I was ‘doing the right’ thing, remembering “don’t ever put me in an old people’s home” knowing that was exactly what I was considering... I now realise what made it all so difficult: it was the realisation that taking and accepting the responsibility of making such a life-changing decision on behalf of a loved one was the hardest decision I had ever had to make. Finding the type of care available within the many different care homes is daunting in itself: • Do I want a new, large, modern home or should I say institution with all the facilities like Wi-Fi and a garden maze, or do I want the home that offers the nearest possible likeness to a ‘home’? • Do I want familiar staff, many of whom have been working at the same home for many years, coupled with on-going continuous training enhanced by a dedicated management team who are in daily contact with both residents and staff? • Do I want to see certificates plastered all over the walls or do I want to be greeted every time I visit by the same familiar faces? • Do I want the same staff knowing my loved one not only during the day but also at night when they are alone and feeling lost and knowing that they would appreciate If you are thinking along these lines, then come and visit Sea Bank House for a chat and feel the homely atmosphere for yourself. LIFEBOAT WORKHORSES 50th Anniversary

the beginning of May, 1966. Since then, five more ILB’s, the latest named Mary Elizabeth Barnes, have been ‘on service’ at Fleetwood, working alongside the larger all-weather lifeboat. Their arrival in 1966 helped save the lives of around 120 people and they’ve been in almost 1,000 operations, in the past 50 years.

The RNLI lifeboat workhorses, the ‘D’ class inshore lifeboats, have been saving lives for many years. This week marks the 50th anniversary, since the first inshore lifeboat (ILB) arrived at Fleetwood RNLI. The first ILB was unnamed, but numbered No.91 and arrived for a summer season at

The ‘D’ class ILB’s have a crew of either two or three and can reach speeds of 25 knots, making it a vital asset to the volunteer lifeboat crew at Fleetwood, especially when rescuing bathers or walkers cut off by incoming tides. Captain Dave Eccles, RNLI Fleetwood Lifeboat Operations Manager said “The introduction of the RNLI inshore lifeboat has ensured many more lives have been saved by the volunteer lifeboat crews, around our shores.’’

SHOVELS HAMBLETON FUN RUN The above went ahead, despite the atrocious weather AGAIN, although we didn’t have the gales like we had last year (not that anyone was disappointed about that!). However on a lighter note, despite the weather being against us, you helped us once again to raise somewhere around £2,000 for donation to charities this year. A big ‘Thank You’ to all of you who helped in any way either by making a donation (especially all the local businesses who were so generous with their donations of raffle prizes), the individuals who entered the run or walk, paid their entry fee and hopefully some of you will have raised sponsorship money in addition, to the Fun Run committee who this year did a tremendous job in getting everything into place, particularly in view of our very limited numbers and last but not least to all the bands and entertainers who gave up their time to appear and provide us with entertainment on the day, and those of you who battled the bad weather to come along and set up your various stalls as an added attraction. There is still time for any local or national charity or individual who could put a donation from the fund to good use to submit a written application. Letters should be addressed to the Fun Run Committee, c/o The Shovels, Green Meadow Lane, Hambleton FY6 9AL. Can I remind you that any sponsorship monies raised for the run or walk should be collected ASAP, placed in a sealed envelope and handed in at the Shovels marked for the attention of the Fun Run Committee – don’t forget to include your name so we know where it’s come from. The sooner we get it all in the sooner we can make a decision as to where the funds are going this year. We will keep you up to date on details of Presentation Night, when we give out all the cheques, once a decision has been made. Dave (aka ‘Evil’) Tripp.

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES • • • • • •

Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth?

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (a dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you in Garstang. Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and patients travel to see him from all over the UK and from abroad. He is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics (full and partial dentures) and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.

Dr Finlay Sutton

Dr John Besford, world-famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work, both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patients’ lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay says: “I love making dentures and we have over 50 years of combined experience honing our skills in this branch of dentistry. When it comes to dentures, the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.”

Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

BEN NEVIS CHALLENGE Raising Funds for the Haemochromatosis Society

west of Ireland having a higher incidence of GH.

Haemochromatosis or GH for short is one of the most common forms of genetic disorders but many people are unaware of the harm it causes if not diagnosed early enough.

On Sun 28th August I and twelve others together with a mountain guide will climb Ben Nevis to raise awareness of GH to prevent others suffering and help fund research.

Most people know about Anaemia but few realise that too much iron in the blood can cause irreparable damage to the organs of the body.

Please help the Society to continue their work by sponsoring our efforts. To give a donation go to www.justgiving.com and my page, David Moss, Ben Nevis Challenge. If you can gift aid, the charity can claim an extra 25p in the pound off HM Revenue.

The only treatment for GH is for the patient to have regular venesections or give a pint of blood. This reduces the levels of iron to an acceptible amount. In 2008 my two sisters and I were diagnosed with GH just by chance when one of them had a routine blood test. It is mostly people of Celtic origin who are affected, and it is estimated that 1 in 200 people in northern Europe are affected or are carriers, with the

If prefered I can supply a sponsorship form for donations. All funds raised go direct to The Haemochromatosis Society Charity No.1001307 in England & Wales and No. SC041701 in Scotland. www.haemochromatosis.org.uk David Moss (01995) 604654 Email: rosemarymoss48@gmail.com

RSPCA Blackpool & North Lancashire I would first to like say a massive thank you to everyone who attended our Mini Dog Show in St John’s Square on Mon 30th May. We are looking for a new home for gerbils Ged, Gerry and Gary who were found in an alleyway. Luckily they were caught by passers by who then brought them into our care. We have no background history on them so are unsure of their ages. They are all friendly and are fine being handled although they can be a little quick at times! They love to dig and tunnel so will need a large glass tank to enable them to do this. The boys need to be rehomed together and are suitable for older children. Their adoption fee altogether is £21.00. Valentino Valentino is an extra special cat who is looking for an extra special owner. They are also often used when you visit a shopping site to store details of anything you place in your ‘basket’ until you get to the ‘checkout’. Without cookies, many useful features or some entire sites simply don’t work. However, cookies can also be used to track

the sites you visit or items you view on shopping sites so that websites can target you with specific adverts. In May 2012, a new EU requirement meant that any website needs to obtain your permission to store and use cookies on your computer. Many sites do this by putting a disclaimer at the top or bottom of the screen – you may need to click a button to accept their policy and get rid of the message or you may simply be agreeing if you carry on using the site. This doesn’t mean that every website has suddenly started tracking you at once – they were probably using cookies anyway and now they just need to tell you about it! So, what should you be doing about it? Blocking cookies completely can prevent some sites or functionality from working, but if you are concerned there are steps

COMPUTER SAFETY (cont) you can take to minimise the effect they have: •

Change the settings in your browser to limit the damage – eg in Internet Explorer, Internet Options, Security – make sure the settings are at least ‘Medium’ or higher. Some browsers will also let you enable and disable cookies on a site by site basis so you can allow them on sites you trust or block ones you don’t trust (although not with Microsoft Edge). With some browsers you can view what is happening on a particular page and what cookies are stored on your computer after visiting the page – for Internet Explorer, click on the settings cog and choose ‘Safety’ then ‘Webpage privacy policy’. Use an internet security or anti-

If your browser includes options for ‘Tracking Protection’ or ‘Do Not Track’, turn these on.

HAMBLETON WI ‘Mam, Mam; it’s The Madwife’ Carol Waterhouse, 29 years as a midwife, gave us an historical and hysterical account of her working life. Getting into people’s homes could be quite difficult. On one occasion, after knocking a few times on a door and getting no response, the letter box opened and a child looked at her. On explaining to this small person who she was Carol heard her shout ‘Mam! Mam! It’s the madwife!’ hence the title of this week’s talk. It is the world’s second oldest profession. Before registration of midwifes in the early 20th Century; the local ‘handywoman’ was usually called in, sometimes earning the name of the ‘drunken hag’. There were male obstetricians in lyingin hospitals or free infirmaries. This was before the discovery of microbes in 1890 and antiseptics, so many, many women died of puerperal fever with cross infection from 0 r3 ve ars nce Ye erie p

HAMBLETON WI (cont) the male attendants who perhaps had been to dissecting practice in the mortuary before going into the maternity wards and examining their patients without even washing their hands. Times have changed drastically. With the aid of over 200 leaflets, normally handed to the mother to be, Carol showed and read out all the titles in English and then explained that all this information was to be had in nearly every language now used in England. In the early days of her career there were no purpose-built incubators and sometimes a joiner would knock up a wooden box with wire on top and a light bulb for heating! In the home a drawer would be used, leading to one visit where the mother had shut the baby back into the chest of drawers. No one had told her to leave the drawer out! Carol told lots of funny stories and showed us the form that has to be filled in with over 100 questions regarding the mother’s and father’s details (if known). Amazing how so many girls do not even ask the father’s name! Diary Dates Mon 13th June: Monthly Meeting 7:30pm at the URC Church Hall, Sandy Lane. Speaker Sally Naden ‘Behind the Scenes’. We also have a new accompanist and extend a warm welcome to Brenda Bentley. This year the Choir will be singing at the Gala on Sat 9th July. Please come along and listen to and meet and chat with us. We are hoping to forge links with other local musical groups such as Pilling Jubilee Band and raise money for charities. In order to achieve these goals, we need more members! So if you enjoy singing and music, now is your chance! We would like to encourage younger residents of Over Wyre (16 +) to join us, but there is no upper age limit, or auditions! The stronger each section of the Choir becomes, the more varied the choice of music for performances can be (And yes, as always, we need more male voices !) We want the Choir to be something Over Wyre will be proud of so give us your voices and support! You can help by joining the choir, attending performances or becoming a patron. BE PREPARED FOR FLOODING ensure that we are all prepared for future recurrences. St Michael’s Flood Action Group (FLAG) and Churchtown Flood Defence Group have been formed by local residents as a result and we are keen to establish similar community action groups in other areas.

Last winter brought devastating floods to Garstang, St Michael’s and Churchtown, when extremely heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow and damaged the banks of the River Brock flooding around 100 homes and businesses. We’ve been working together with those communities to both help them recover and

The idea is that working with the council and other authorities, residents can prepare for the future by taking measures now to protect homes with flood resilience equipment and put a community resilience plan in place should another flood occur. FLOOD ACTION GROUP - FLAG

wyrecouncil or call (01253) 891000.

St Michael’s Flood Action Group

In the meantime, there are things we can all do now to be prepared for flooding.Sign up to the Environment Agency’s flood warning system ‘Floodline’, a 24 hour recorded information service that tells you when your area is at risk of flooding - call 0345 988 1188 or 0845 988 1188.

At St Michael’s most of the tributaries of the Wyre meet. The Wyre Catchment Area extends from Abbeystead in the north to parts of northern Preston including Whittingham, Woodplumpton and Barton in the south.

Should there be a need, supplies of sandbags are permanently held at Sunnyside Terrace in Preesall as part of the local community resilience plan in that area and we wish to establish similar stores across the borough. However, you can buy unfilled sandbags and a supply of sand from most DIY stores and builders merchants but remember that if there is a flood expected in your area demand may exceed supply as people rush to obtain them. In the event of a flood outside normal office hours (after 5:00pm on weekdays and all weekend), Wyre Council operates an emergency service which you can call for assistance on (01253) 895116.

St Michael’s is therefore vulnerable to flood in times of prolonged rainfall, as the events of last December demonstrated. FLAG has been formed by local residents to work to limit the risk of further flooding and provide knowledge to help to make properties more resilient in case of flood and people safer. More specifically the Group’s aims include involving local residents in: •

Checking regularly that river and other watercourse banks are being maintained properly and reporting problems promptly to the contact person at the Group. (See below.)

Information about flooding incidents will be shared via the council’s website and social media channels, local radio and of course, our officers will be in the area along with the emergency services and other authorities. I’ll be providing regular updates in the future and would like to encourage everyone to think now about how they would deal with a flood. Visit wyre.gov.uk/flooding for lots more practical advice about being prepared and what to do if the worst happens. Those affected in December can still apply for Government grants of up to £5,000 to help fund flood resistance measures for properties. Visit wyre.gov. uk/floodinggrantscheme to apply or call (01253) 891000. Councillor Roger Berry

The Group’s representatives will seek to impress upon local councils - principally Wyre, Preston and Lancashire County Council, the Environment Agency and United Utilities the importance of always keeping in mind that their decisions may have serious adverse consequences for St Michael’s in terms of flood risk to property and people, not least the children at the village school. We shall seek to enter into dialogue with these organisations to improve understanding and press for those improvements to river banks already planned to be implemented fully and

promptly. We shall also negotiate for the setting up of machinery to deal effectively with reports of defects and problems received by the Group. A start on this has already been made and we shall ensure representatives of FLAG attend the Wyre Flood Forum regularly. People with many varied skills are needed to make the Group effective. SOROPTIMISTS Women inspiring action, transforming lives This month I thought I would take a look at the wider world with regard to our work. This year sees the start of a new four year project for our Federation. At our recent Conference in Glasgow S.I. Canterbury won the vote for us to accept their Garden Project helping women in Meru Kenya. The project will support some of the poorest women-led households in Kenya and focus on providing opportunities for women and girls who may never otherwise be given the chance to earn an income. It fully embraces the three key areas at the heart of SIGBI’s Programme Focus Goals – Educate, Empower and Enable. Improved food production and education will support women

and girls to transform their lives and those of others through a process of cascade learning and mentoring thereby reducing poverty, improving health and increasing employment. District Meru is in Tigania East with a population of 136,000. 90% live in rural areas with HIV/AIDs prevalent in the region. The legacy of this project cannot be overestimated:

women will be valued for recognising and reducing the plight of others who live in poverty

women and girls will have a greater chance of survival, safety and status in their community

the number of beneficiaries will continue to grow through the cascade system of passing on knowledge and understanding

women will become role models for others without conventional academic skills

improved access to education for girls will enhance their prospects for the future

the project is sustainable and easily replicable

more women and girls will live above the poverty line with improved life chances, and be able to care for their dependants more effectively

The Band sponsored Canon Pam Wilding (Band Patron) and her team for their final visit to Kenya in December and a cheque for £300 was presented to her. The 7:00pm Marching and Waltzing concert was packed to the doors and with Steve Burrows singing the waltzes and John Wilcock compering, the concert was a huge success. The Band were on excellent form and so many people said ‘wow!’.

In addition to the usual Galas, the band is also booked to play in Happy Mount Park, Morecambe on the afternoon of Sun 26th June at 2:30pm. We hope to see you at one of these events.

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Last month proved to be a busy time at Over Wyre Medical Centre. With the generous help of our Patient Participation Group (PPG) we supported Dementia Awareness Week by having a dedicated table in the waiting room containing a multitude of information. Dementia Awareness Week was an opportunity for us to try and increase understanding of dementia and raise awareness. Thank you to our PPG members for supporting this event and tirelessly floor walking within the Waiting Room to spread the word. Also in May was International Nurse’s Day. It was an opportunity to thank all our nurses for the great job they do and the huge difference they make to the lives of thousands of people in the Over Wyre area. These are challenging times for nurses so it is great that they have a special day in recognition of all that they do. As you are now all aware we have suspended our telephone management system and moved to a system to that offers a combination of pre-bookable face-to-face appointments as well as telephone and sameday emergency appointments. We will work hard to continue improving and thank you for your consideration during this change over. New research from the King’s Fund has found that the overall number of consultations (face-to-face and telephone) has increased by 15 per cent over the past five years, three times the rate of increase in the number of GPs. This has been the most comprehensive analysis to date of the pressures facing the profession. As well as a growth in the number of consultations, it shows that general practice’s workload has become more complex and intense. For example, the research found a 13% growth in face-to-face consultations and a 63% growth in telephone consultations, contributing to stressful and highly pressurised working days for GPs. The report also underlines the scale of the

72

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE (cont) recruitment and retention crisis facing the profession. The report follows on from the recently published General Practice Forward View by providing a coherent diagnosis of why and where pressures in general practice come from. It says that general practice is at risk of falling apart unless significant additional investment is accompanied by new ways of working that build on current good practice. The report’s recommendations include: •

placing general practice at the heart of new sustainability and transformation plans to ensure that the voice of general practice is heard and acted on developing new and innovative models of general practice with a balance struck between the benefits of working at scale through neighbourhoods and making sure services are responsive to local people designing a workforce strategy through Health Education England that supports sustainable careers for GPs and their fellow team members, promoting sustainable and fulfilling options for development and recognising changing career preferences.

Patients born between 01/04/1991 – 31/08/1997 are entitled to Meningitis ACWY Vaccine if they have not had it before or been given it at school. Appointments are available at the surgery. You may have heard in the News that there have been problems with Patient Results due to a system error within the QRISK Calculator of System One. We would like to assure our Patients that our Practice is unaffected as we do not operate System One. I hope you find the above informative and I look forward to updating you with our developments soon. Thank you for your continued support. John MacPhee - Practice Manager

Last year, the Government granted planning permission for the storage of up to 630,000 tonnes of natural gas at Preesall. This was despite more than a decade of united opposition from the Borough and County Councils and the entire local community. Thanks to all of you who took part in our postcard campaign to register our opposition. On 18th May we delivered over 1,000 postcards to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Amber Rudd’s offices in London, together with our MP, Cat Smith. The majority of you were most worried about safety with many singling out the fact that the site is too close to homes and schools, the ground is unstable, the geology unsuitable and worries about the proximity of fracking. With the development due to start later this year there has been no additional information provided to the local community either from the company or the Government and the standard line so far, that the UK has some of the strongest regulations in the world for on-shore and off-shore gas exploration and storage, does not seem to have calmed people’s fears.

NO GAS STORAGE (cont) Next came concerns about the environment, traffic on small village roads, the effect on farming, house prices, village life and businesses in the area. There was also frustration from many about how the decision was taken and the lack of democracy after so many years of opposition to the scheme. We have been very busy scanning all the cards with comments and making them anonymous so we can share the results more widely with decision-makers on our web-site. Coming soon! Community Walk and Picnic Sun12th June we are having a community walk and picnic in the grounds of Parrox Hall, Preesall. A family walk and treasure hunt is due to set off from the ferry at 12 noon. We The route crosses the golf course, through Hackensall

Woods to Parrox Hall where we will enjoy a picnic in the gardens. This is open to all. Let’s hope there is no rain! Guided Walk - registration only On the same day, seasoned walkers can take a guided walk round the main elements of the gas storage project. These include the site entrance and security compound; the Booster Pump Station and control room; the massive Gas Compressor Compound; the seven Wellhead Compounds, from which 19 underground caverns will be created in the underlying salt; and the new Access Road from the A588 Hallgate Lane. Those taking part will also be given an insight into what was there before – including the Preesall salt-mines, with their mineral railway and jetty for ships; the scores of brine-wells dotting local fields, and the pumping station which brought water from Eagland Hill, near Pilling. In addition, they will see the extent of some of the devastating ground subsidences. The walk will be around five miles and take some two-and-a-half hours. Join us at the picnic later. Spaces on the guided walk are limited to 12 people and by registration only so please fill in the forms provided at the Library and the petshop by Fri 3rd June or ring Claire to see if there are available spaces. In case of high demand additional dates can be added. Posters for your window are still available from us or from the pet shop in Knott End. Thanks again for all the community spirit on this issue.
