Please accept an invitation to join The Elswick Singers at our concerts in Elswick Village Hall on Roseacre Lane at 7:30pm where we are hoping to bring that picture alive for you in our ‘Flavour of Summer’ concerts, intent on bringing our audience a “Veritable Feast” of food, wine, love and music through our songs. We aim to provide enjoyment for our audiences whilst remembering the many worthwhile charities that we help through the proceeds from our concert raffles. However, all prospective new members will be welcome. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings at The Village Hall from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. It is not necessary to be able to read music and a warm welcome awaits! We look forward to seeing you there. Valerie Hamilton

OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY We’re all looking forward to a long awaited summer. Paint brushes will be exchanged for hoes and palette knives discarded for trowels. The gardening season will be upon us! Our indoor meetings have finished for the summer months but there is so much out there waiting to be painted. With long warm days, vibrant colours and lovely local views we are now arranging out of doors painting sessions. We met at Knott End ferry in early June but alas it rained so we only managed some sketching in the Ferry Cafe. Our first meeting in July will be on Tues 7th Juy at 1:30pm at Stanah Country Park Thornton by the cafe area. Anyone can join us; just bring art materials and a chair. There is free car parking and toilets are available. There will be other events in July and August so please contact me for more information. Sandra Langhorne (01253) 813739

CARDIAC RISK in the YOUNG (CRY) What a wonderful community event Catterall Gala was – I hope you managed to catch the parade! The CRY stand was well supported, with several enquires about the work of CRY and screening events, and the games seemed to go down well too. Our sincere thanks to the Gala committee for the invitation to be there. Dog Walk for CRY Sun 19th July, 10:00am, Beacon Fell Hot on the heels of our Canal Caper comes a fun canine escapade kindly organised by Kate’s Dog Services, Garstang. No doggy pal? Don’t worry! You don’t have to have a dog to walk with us - just be aware there will be lots of dogs in the party! The cost is £5 for an individual, £8 for a couple/ family. Registration forms are available from Garstang YMCA Leisure Centre and the swimming pool, Kirsten Swift, Kate Gillett, or myself and need to be returned, with

payment, by Fri 17th July. There’s plenty of free parking, a café, toilet facilities and a picnic area - a perfect way to spend an hour or two socialising, raising funds and enjoying the outdoors too! KNOTT END & PREESALL IN BLOOM July is always a busy month for the In Bloom team as this is when the RHS judges come to assess our entry for North West In Bloom. With the cool spring many of the flowers have been slow to get going but we’re hoping that with some warmer weather everything will soon be blooming. The RHS theme for this year and for the next three is “Greening the Grey” which sounds like an advert for a new hair colour but is actually meant to encourage communities to seek out those areas of “grey” which can be transformed by the addition of a tub of flowers or a small shrub. As our response to this challenge the In Bloom team has ordered some new planters which will be placed along the path at the side of the river in front of the coastguard station. As everyone knows this is an exposed spot for weather so we hope that our chosen plants will be able to cope! Anyone interested in joining the ‘In Bloom’ team is very welcome. Our regular gardening evening is Thursday starting about 6:30pm but we’re very flexible and will accept help at any time! For further information contact Yvonne McCann (01253) 811364 or Joyce Wilson (01253) 813519

THE NEW PILLING COMMUNITY HALL I am writing to thank you for your loyal support as a user of the Memorial Hall. Many of you who attended the recent closing ceremony remembered fondly all the celebrations and events that have been held there. It is very evident that a Community Hall plays a vital part at the heart of our village. The Memorial Hall Committee is already working hard to secure funding for the new Community Hall and are now asking for your help. In order to strengthen our bid for lottery funding, we need letters of support from our village community. Whether you used the hall on a regular basis or for fundraising activities or simply for family occasions we are asking you to write a letter of support to demonstrate the need for new facilities. This should say how often you used the Hall and what numbers attended the function (approximately). The more letters we get, the stronger our bid for lottery funding will be. We also need letters from people in the village who, at present, have to travel long distances for sports facilities and other amenities that would be included in the Hall and surrounding area. If possible use headed notepaper denoting the organisation you represent. This will further strengthen our bid. Please return letters by Wed 1st July. Please send letters to: Katrina Bell, Stonewell, School Lane, Pilling, Preston, PR3 6HB or email KatrinaMBell@hotmail.com You can also give letters to any member of the Memorial Hall Committe Katrina Bell

DEFIBRILLATORS IN PILLING In January, Pilling Parish Council launched its appeal to provide public access defibrillators. Thanks to everyone for the very generous support we have received which means that we will be able to provide five defibrillators throughout Pilling by 1st July which will be installed on outside walls to allow for 24/7 access by the public. Special thanks to Stalmine Lodge of RAOB who, on 10th June, presented Pilling Council with a defibrillator. We are awaiting delivery of the wall cases in which each defibrillator will be installed but are hopeful that they will arrive soon. They are to be located at Pilling St John’s School, Glenfield Caravan site, Pilling Nursing Home, Stakepool Stores and at the hall at Eagland Hill. The North West Ambulance Service will undertake regular checks on the units and

will arrange public training sessions locally so that whoever wishes to attend can be shown how simple and easy defibrillators are to use. In the case of an emergency, ring 999 and you will be informed of the nearest defibrillator by the ambulance service. Thanks to all who have responded to this appeal – truly a generous response which has exceeded our expectations. Cllr. Edward Moorat OVER WYRE GARDENING CLUB The speaker at the June meeting was Jim Bennett on the topic of “Pinks and Carnations”. Jim has been growing carnations for the past 20 years and is a successful exhibitor at national shows. The main tips for growing both pinks and

New plants can readily be grown from cuttings, which should be planted in a mix of compost, peat and perlite. The cuttings should have developed a sufficient root system for potting on in about 2 - 3 weeks. From the number of questions at the end of Jim’s talk it is obvious that pinks and carnations are still popular garden flowers. The next meeting of the Gardening Club will be held on Mon 20th July at 7:30pm in the Church Hall, Knott End Methodist Church when Malcolm Tranter will speak on “Two Contrasting Islands – Madeira & Lanzarote”. PILLING WI “Get your Kicks on Route 66” the song tells us and Pilling WI members got their kicks from the re-telling by Norman Harris of the fulfilling of his dream as a member of an H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) Dressed fit for the road, Norman, one of 15 members, sailed from Liverpool to ride from coast to coast to coast: yes the U.S.A. even has more coasts than the rest of us The vastness and diversity of the country cannot fail to impress: 80 miles between Gas (petrol) stations, people driving 100 miles from home in a straight line to visit for dinner, 360 degree horizons with nothing but desert in any direction, Las Vegas lit up like a thousand or more Blackpool Illuminations - its hotels having big dippers encircling the buildings with 1,000 feet of fresh air beneath them. KNOTT END GOLF CLUB Rejection of Halite Offer On the 11th May 2015, the Board of Directors formally rejected an offer from Halite that would have provided much needed revenue for the club and provided Halite with land and rights of access to parts of the golf course. This decision was unanimously supported by the majority of members at an open forum held on Friday 29th May 2015. The club recognised that some 40,000 people have already signed a petition opposing the use of the underground salt seams for storage of gas on the grounds of safety to the local community and the impact storage would have on the natural wild life and putting the whole ecology of the area into jeopardy. In addition, the Club, represented by the Board of Directors, felt that the offer from Halite to acquire land and rights of access to other parts of the course also placed the

future viability of Knott End Golf Club at risk; potentially resulting in the closure of one of the area’s major assets. Mike Bradshaw, Chairman and spokesman, for and on behalf of the Board of Directors, said “Knott End Golf Club is an integral part of the local community and we are passionate about protecting our local environment. “Whilst the offer from Halite would have provided a boost to the club in the short term, in our opinion it pales into insignificance when compared to the impact that Gas Storage will have on the local community, wild life and environment. It is for these reasons that we and our members felt that it was our duty to stand by our neighbours and do the right thing to protect our unique ecological surroundings.” Christine Woosnam - Secretary Manager Knott End Golf Club Ltd (01253) 810576

DOWN TO EARTH One of the drawbacks of being a professional gardener is that one can spend so much time looking after other people’s gardens that there’s little time left to keep an eye on our own. So hands up who didn’t realise one of the standard roses was riddled with black spot. Um (much shuffling of feet and a refusal to make eye contact) that would be us. We left the disease to spread to such an extent that we’ve had to strip the plant of all its leaves and it now looks rather bald and a little sad. Fortunately, this nasty fungus hasn’t spread to all the other roses which are blooming healthily – but rose geeks beware – the disease is prevalent this year. Blackspot, (the scientific name is Diplocarpon Rosae) is a nasty fungus that manifests itself on rose bushes as black spots on leaves progressing to black spots fringed with yellow rings on both sides of the leaves.

28

As they develop the spots enlarge. Eventually, as the disease spreads, the entire leaf will go from green to yellow and then drop to the ground. With time the entire rose bush may become defoliated. Leaves less than two weeks old are the most susceptible to this disease. Defoliation brought on by blackspot is worst during wet weather, especially humid weather hence why so many of us are experiencing problems. The fungus becomes active in a wet environment with a temperature of about 24 degrees celsius. It needs about seven hours of these conditions to germinate and then symptoms will begin to appear on rose foliage within three to ten days. From then on spores are produced every three weeks. If unchecked, blackspot can affect the entire rose garden leaving an unattractive appearance of many ‘bare-naked’ plants.

Are you phoning an advertiser for a quote?

DOWN TO EARTH (cont) And don’t forget - spores can over-winter in the garden so autumn clean-up is crucial, otherwise the entire cycle can repeat itself the following spring and summer. Once you have discovered that your rose bushes are infected it is best to prune off the damaged parts of the plant and gather the diseased foliage. Whatever you do, don’t go flinging this into the compost bin or else you’ll be spreading the fungus to your beds next year when you recycle the soil back into the garden. Dispose of this diseased material in the green bin or burn it.

and ornamental plants. It kills greenfly and blackfly within 24hrs and fights existing infections of blackspot, powdery mildew and rust. Spray at the first signs of disease and then continue spraying regularly. So here endeth today’s lesson – do as I say, not as I do – particularly as I’ve just remembered that when the baby was born a dear friend had a rose named after her and we were sent some seeds to sow. Have I sowed them? No. What kind of a mother am I?

Finally after having removed the diseased parts from your rose bushes you’ll need to treat it with a fungicide.

Anyway, the last word goes to Eleanor Roosevelt who was flattered to have a rose named after her until she read the description in the catalogue. “No good in a bed, but perfect up against a wall.”

We’ve found Rose Clear to be really effective. It’s a 3-in-1 systemic insecticide and fungicide ideal for roses and other flowering

OVER WYRE SINGERS INVITATION Word has got back to us that there’s quite a few of you out there who enjoy singing in the shower. Well don’t be shy, put some clothes on, dry your hair, and come and sing with us instead. We’re looking forward to welcoming new members when we hold a special social evening on Thurs Sept 3rd at the Squash Club in Knott End. Everyone is welcome and there are no auditions – we just need you to be able to hold a tune. We rehearse for two concerts a year – our popular Christmas event and our Spring Concert. Our music is varied from contemporary to choral and we’re a friendly bunch who simply share a love of music.

If you can’t make the social evening then our new season begins on Thurs 10th Sept at 7:30pm in the Knott End Methodist Church Hall – come along and help us make our Christmas Concert even more magical. Alison Tarpey-Black GARSTANG & DISTRICT ARTS SOCIETY Two special events are being organised this autumn to raise funds for Garstang and District Arts Society. Both will be held at the Arts Centre on Croston Road, Garstang. Preliminary details have been announced well in advance for people to make a note in their diaries of the dates of the events, which are likely to attract large numbers. On Sat 3rd Oct at 2:00pm award-winning Coronation Street actor Malcolm Hebden, who plays nosy parker Norris Coles, will be talking about his life and career in the world of theatre, radio and television. Mr Coles will be introduced and interviewed by Professor James Dodding of Garstang, who has known the actor for about 60 years. The other fundraiser will take place on Sat Oct 10th, at 7:30pm. It will take the form of a Garstang version of the legendary TV quiz show “Call My Bluff” (1965 to 1988), in which the audience and panel members have to work out whether their fellow panelists are telling the truth, or bluffing, after giving various definitions of ultra-obscure English words. Panelists are likely to include a retired Garstang clergyman, an official of Garstang Camera Club, a local politician of independent persuasion and a leading member of a local theatrical society. Further details of both events will be announced in Focus. Anthony Coppin

CAT SMITH MP I wish to begin by sincerely thanking the electorate of Lancaster and Fleetwood, which includes the villages of Knott End, Preesall and Pilling, for electing me as your representative. It is a great honor to serve as your MP and I hope I do so to the satisfaction of all residents. Defending Rural Services In Parliament I have joined the All Party Parliamentary Group on Rural Services, and have the pleasure of serving as a Vice Chair of the group. At a time of cuts and austerity it is crucial that there is a strong voice defending our rural public services and commercial ones. I was shocked to hear that NatWest have proposed the closure of their Knott End branch, the last bank in this area. I am challenging the bank’s decision and will

34

speak out in defence of this vital service to the people and businesses of Knott End and Preesall. Fracking Having spoken to many residents Over Wyre, it’s clear that fracking is not wanted by our community and will prolong our reliance on fossil fuels. This at a time when we need to be investing in renewable sources of energy to avert catastrophic climate change. Climate scientists suggest only one fifth of the world’s conventional fossil fuel reserves can be burnt if we are to avoid dangerous climate change and this is before shale gas extraction is taken into account. Sadly current national planning law prevents the Council’s Development Committee from rejecting Cuadrilla’s applications

my concerns at these harmful proposals to add their name. You can do so online at http://act.catsmith.co.uk/petition/frackingletter

Council officers were right in January to recommend that these plans be rejected. Even with the new measures proposed by Cuadrilla the noise generated from the fracking sites will continue to have, in the words of the planning officer’s earlier report, “significant adverse effects on health and quality of life”.

CAT SMITH MP

There are also serious concerns over local highway safety which are inherent to the carrying out of large scale industrial processes in what is at present a rural area. Cuadrilla’s modified plans have not and cannot adequately address these. In addition, the steps proposed by Cuadrilla to reduce the noise of its activities will worsen the impact of the site on the landscape, yet another reason the planning application should be refused.

The Government has yet to finalise the regulations which will control fracking, these are still awaiting secondary legislation. The Council could therefore decline an application on the grounds that it could preempt those safeguards. These regulations are a matter of significant controversy and may well change before being enacted. Labour’s front bench spokesperson on Energy and Climate Change, Caroline Flint, has insisted that no fracking should take place under the current regulatory framework. So far over 800 local people have signed my petition calling on the Council to reject these applications. For the sake of the local community as well as all those at risk from the consequences of climate change I urge anyone who shares

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME Last month I dealt with the powerful effect stress has on shutting down our digestive system but there are other factors which contribute to this problem. Unfortunately modern wheat, which is a hybrid plant developed in the 1960s, is a major problem without us even realising it. It has been labelled a perfect chronic poison in the book ‘Wheat Belly’ by Dr William Davis. This hybrid grain is wonderful for producing a high yield crop that makes enormous profits for food manufacturers. The problem is that it acts like a subtle, slow poison. Therefore, remove wheat from your diet. I encounter many people who say, “But I only eat wholemeal wheat.” I am sorry to say this is just as bad. Wheat is now in masses of foods so to avoid it, buy your own raw ingredients and cook your own food. Please do not throw the ‘we have not got time’ argument in the air, for time in the kitchen making your food is never wasted time. Time in front of the television is!

Another important factor is HOW we eat. We Anglo-Saxons tend to view food as fuel and that means we eat to get it down so we can get on with things. So…..SLOW DOWN…. chew your food and taste it and enjoy it. As you chew you break the food down which makes it easier to digest, your saliva begins the process of digestion and, the best bit, you get to taste all the flavours properly. Chewing also sends signals to your stomach to prepare for the arrival of food by releasing stomach acids. If you eat too quickly that cannot happen. In addition, chewing and eating slowly will mean you feel fuller, quicker. It takes twenty minutes for your stomach to let you know it is full, if you throw your food down quickly you will end up groaning half an hour later at how bloated and full you feel because you have not given your body time to do its job. Nick Tofalos

Other grains do not seem to be quite as bad but hybrid wheat is big trouble for our health. In fact, oats can help sooth your digestion but limit most grains. Avoid artificial sweeteners. Aspartame, in my opinion, is to be avoided at all costs but sorbitol can have a laxative effect so stay away from it. And do not have more than a couple of pieces of fruit a day – that’s a rule we should all stick with as they can have a very high sugar content. Limit stimulants such as caffeine and depressants, namely, alcohol. You will know if these are triggers or not. In fact, learning what foods cause you trouble is a very important part of managing this problem. Only use good fats such as olive oil, coconut oil and butter. Some people find fats are a big problem, others do not, so tune in to how your body reacts.

OVACOME Raising Awareness of Ovarian Cancer Over the last couple of months, the causes and management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) have been discussed in Focus. It is good to see awareness of IBS being raised but it is important that you do not diagnosis yourself with Irritable Bowel Syndrome but get advice from your GP as the symptoms could be due in some circumstances to other more serious conditions, including infection, coeliac disease and ovarian cancer. Ovarian Cancer is diagnosed in over 7,000 women in the UK each year and whilst it can develop in women of any age it is more likely to occur in post-menopausal women with 90% of cases developing in women over the age of 45 (unlike IBS which usually develops before the age of 40), so if someone older suddenly develops such symptoms it is particularly important that it is checked out by a Doctor. The symptoms of Ovarian Cancer can be vague and easily confused with other more common health problems before the possibility of Ovarian Cancer is considered.

So what can we do to make sure that women with abdominal symptoms receive the most appropriate investigations? We need to be aware of the particular symptoms of Ovarian Cancer. To help us remember, Ovacome suggests using the ‘BEAT’ acronym: • • • •

GARSTANG PATCHWORK QUILTERS Over the weekend of April 17th -19th hundreds of enthusiastic visitors came to Bilsborrow to see the 15th biennial exhibition of all things patchwork and quilting made by members of Garstang Patchwork Quilters. Exhibits included large and single bed quilts, lap quilts, wall hangings, pictures, bags, table runners, cushions and exquisite dolls. Stalls of lovely fabrics were available to allow ‘fabricaholics’ a chance to indulge their passions and the Quilters’ Guild of Great Britain also ran a stall. The Project Linus stall was well visited by people donating quilts or buying kits to make blocks for new quilts to be given out to needy children. A feature of each show is for visitors to choose their favourite item and it was announced at the group’s May meeting that ‘Playing with Words’ by Hilary Seed had won the ‘Visitors Choice’

40

The raffle and tombola were in aid of two local charities: Rosemere Cancer Foundation and The SPACE Centre, Preston. First prize was the award winning quilt ‘Flights of Fancy’ made by the group. A cheque for £1,500 each will be presented to representatives of both charities at the next group meeting. Alison Shorrock, who runs the SPACE centre, opened the show and was upset that signs said “Please don’t touch the quilts” as the Space Centre is all about enhancing sensory experiences, but she was delighted to know this was possible, when wearing a pair of gloves. She could then feel the textures of the quilts and see how they were made. If you enjoyed this exhibition make a date for April 2017 when the next one will be held. Veronica Frost

PILLING BAND Those who have been following the fortunes of the band will be aware of the massive fundraising effort, organised by Jim Redman, which will enable us to convert the cart track leading to our bandroom into a properly surfaced and drained road. Whilst we owe a great debt to Jim and his helpers, this has presented the band with quite a challenge in preparing and presenting a number of events featuring a widely varied programme of music, culminating on 4th May with a concert to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the present band. Whilst all of these events have been well supported, the last one was outstanding, featuring two concerts in one day. At the same time as all this has been going on, the band has carried on with its usual engagements including galas at Scorton, Garstang and Catterall plus a “Songs of

Unfortunately, the band was unable to field enough players to take part in the annual Whit Friday march competitions which are held around Tameside and Saddleworth. The band is now into a very busy period. Forthcoming events in July include Eagland Hill Coffee Feast on Sat 4th July, a concert in Happy Mount Park Morecambe on Sun 5th July, Preesall Gala on Sat 11th July, a concert in Heysham on Sat 18th July, Whitechapel Church on Sun 19th July, Pilling Coffee Feast on Sat 25th July and the Shireshead Songs of Praise on Sun 26th July. SEA BANK HOUSE A TRUE HOME-FROM-HOME

I could tell you all about Sea Bank House and its facilities as if I was describing a hotel, for example the beautiful Individual rooms, some with sea views, the designer bathrooms, Wi-Fi, HD televisions, telephones and the glorious sea views from the lounges... However when I was searching for a room for my own mother all those years ago, I do not remember any of those concerns being uppermost in my mind. What I do remember is the fear of making the wrong decision, whether I was ‘doing the right’ thing, remembering “don’t ever put me in an old people’s home” knowing that was exactly what I was considering... I now realise what made it all so difficult: it was the realisation that taking and accepting the responsibility of making such a life-changing decision on behalf of a loved one was the hardest decision I had ever had to make. Finding the type of care available within the many different care homes is daunting in itself: • Do I want a new, large, modern home or should I say institution with all the facilities like Wi-Fi and a garden maze, or do I want the home that offers the nearest possible likeness to a ‘home’? • Do I want familiar staff, many of whom have been working at the same home for many years, coupled with on-going continuous training enhanced by a dedicated management team who are in daily contact with both residents and staff? • Do I want to see certificates plastered all over the walls or do I want to be greeted every time I visit by the same familiar faces? • Do I want the same staff knowing my loved one not only during the day but also at night when they are alone and feeling lost and knowing that they would appreciate If you are thinking along these lines, then come and visit Sea Bank House for a chat and feel the homely atmosphere for yourself. CATTERALL GARDENING CLUB The June meeting was exceptional! Alan Wallbank, an experienced tree officer, was our guest speaker on Tuesday 16th June. He talked about ‘Trees for Smaller Gardens’ and his wealth of knowledge was put to good

use as many of us had questions regarding troublesome trees! He suggested what and when to plant and when to feed and prune trees. Alan kindly offered to email club members his fact sheet which will include a list of reliable trees for buying as well as a fact sheet for maintaining the health of established trees. We would like to thank Alan for an interesting and informative evening. Thank you to everyone who attended, many of whom brought beautiful cakes, plants or raffle prizes and all of which were much appreciated. The next meeting will be held on Tues 21st July in Catterall Village Hall from 7:00pm 9:00pm. The July talk is entitled ‘Demystifying your Garden’ by Tim Smith from Lytham. Tim is a member of the Cottage Garden Society. We look forward to the summer meetings and

COMPUTER SAFETY PART 3 (cont) The operating system kicks into life when you switch the machine on. Main applications you would choose to use might include the web browser (eg. Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome), a word processor for creating documents (eg. Microsoft Word), photo editing software, or any games or other items you use on your computer. Background applications include Java, Adobe Reader and FlashPlayer. These are not normally programs which many people notice or choose to use, but they will be used automatically when needed (usually by a website). The operating system, background programs and browsers all need to be updated on a regular basis. Some of these updates will fix specific problems (eg. preventing your machine from freezing) or give you some new features, but t y por An sea ality i or pec air a s

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Message from the Practice Manager Doctor Telephone Management System It has been an extremely busy time and I am glad to say we have successfully got our new appointment system up and running. Previously a patient would have to wait two weeks for a routine appointment. It must be a change for the better that a patient can now call the surgery and have a GP call them back within two hours; and normally much quicker than that. It must also be a good thing that all the calls are now triaged by a doctor. Under the old system our receptionists would try their best to signpost patients to the most appropriate member of staff but I feel that patients, whilst recognising that the receptionists were trying their very best, find it a bit more comforting that a doctor now carries out the triage process. It also means that patients

58

and receptionists are not enduring the same levels of frustration experienced with the old system and patients now realise how difficult it was for the receptionists when they had no appointments to offer. The new system has shown that not all patients need to see a doctor face-to-face on every occasion. Some people may find it easier to get prompt advice over the phone, rather than having to visit the practice in person. Alternatively, if the Doctor decides that a face-to-face appointment is required he will arrange this for you on the phone. To make our Doctor Telephone Management System work we have upgraded our telephones which you will be pleased to hear has increased the number of lines but unfortunately means that we have had to change our telephone numbers effective from Wednesday 1st July 2015 and the new

Following a successful bid for funding from the NHS, patients of Over Wyre are set to receive even better care and services. This subsidy will enable the building of an extension to the existing premises providing facilities that will significantly enhance the experience of every patient in the form of additional consulting rooms, a meeting room and library. The dispensary will be extended and improvements made to other clinical support rooms and offices.

Joining on 3rd August will be Dr Jerome Kerrane from Layton Medical Centre. We also now have Dr Golda Parker working full time and I am sure you will find her to be the bubbliest of characters and great with the patients. POLICE NOTES If anybody knows the identity of the ‘young adults’ who were on Preesall playing fields from around 10:00pm on Sat 13th June to the early hours on Sunday morning can they make contact please and let us know who they were? Log LC-20150613-1872 refers. These people are responsible for setting two fires on the park necessitating Lancashire Fire and Rescue turning out. Yet again it looks like the irresponsible actions of a minority may spoil it for the majority who use the park as it was intended. This is on the back of last month’s article when parents were asked ‘Do you know what your child is doing when out of your sight’? These vandals are aged between 14 - 17 and were both girls and boys. There were about 10 in total. Somebody will know who they are. When we find them they WILL be doing some

community work! We are still experiencing a number of rural break ins around farm buildings where plant is being stolen. Please report any suspicious vehicles seen in the area so they can be checked out. I dare say these criminals are the same ones responsible for the increase in fly-tipping in the area too. If you see anything out of the ordinary PLEASE report it at the time. I can’t re-iterate this enough. It’s VERY IMPORTANT. There’s not much we can do with information that is days (and sometimes weeks) old. ST AIDAN’S NEWS With only three weeks until we break up for the summer holidays, our students will be very busy engaging in all sorts of activities. Sports Day takes place in July and we are all hoping the weather allows our students to break records both in field and track events. International Links We are all very excited about the visit of students and their teachers from our partner school in South Africa. They will be arriving on 9th July and Mrs Kalinski, our International Links Co-ordinator, has put together a very busy and exciting programme for the two weeks they are with us. They will not only take part in lessons with us at school but they are also going to Liverpool, Chester and London. Our own students are acting as hosts so our visitors will get a real taste of British life.

• • • • • • •

A group of our students will also be going to Germany to stay with students from our partner school. They will learn about education in another country and experience life in a culture different to our own. Trip of a Lifetime! Recently a group of 47 students returned from a half term visit to New York. They visited all the iconic sights such as The Empire State Building, the Rockefeller Centre, the 9/11 Museum, the Statue of Liberty and Central Park as well as enjoying a Broadway show. Students said it was the ‘best experience ever’! There are more exciting trips planned as we believe at Saint Aidan’s that learning does not just happen inside the classroom. Visits to Russia, France, Germany and China will be taking place over the next 18 months.

RSPCA July looks set to be a busy month. We are holding stalls at the Hambleton Gala and also at the Knott End & Preesall Gala. Then we have the Great Eccleston show on the weekend of 18th/19th July, so a busy month of fundraising! Special Appeals

Our appeals this month feature Harvey and Ayla, who both arrived here in December 2014 and are among our longest serving residents.

surgery back in December 2014. She came to the cattery in the hope of finding a new home but five months later she is still looking for a companion. She is a beautiful cat who seems to be overlooked by everyone. An experienced cat owner with no other pets or small children would be perfect. Harvey was rescued by RSPCA Inspectors after he was found with burns and scalds to his body. The injuries took several months to heal. He is a friendly, outgoing and very playful boy looking for a home to call his own. He can be a little rough when he plays so he isn’t suitable to live with children.

Sadly, Ayla was left abandoned at a vet

He doesn’t like other cats and finds the cattery environment very stressful. This can sometimes affect his true character. We are hoping that people can overlook this and give this gorgeous boy a chance.

HAMBLETON WI ‘Born and Bred’ - David Tomlinson’s informative and amusing account of the Warburton Family of bread makers had our audience enthralled. In the 1950’s David went to Courtfield Catering College in Blackpool. During the holidays he worked at Warburton’s Bakery and was asked to carry on as a trainee manager in Rochdale, which involved setting off at 4:30am and getting home at 5:00pm. As this was not a lot of fun he decided to try his hand in America in research and development where he met up with Tom Warburton, who had been to Harvard. At that time he was an entrepreneur, buying a shop in Boston to sell only British products. He persuaded David to come back to England and to Warburtons. Tom once bought a gold plated Rolls Royce and a Jewellers shop. The three other brothers were Harry, who bought the Soreen Malt Loaf firm, George, the accountant, who thought ‘Why buy vans?’ buying a coach and body building firm so they could make their own vans, and Derek, the baker who also bought up Darbyshires Bread who made the Blackpool Milk Roll. These brothers were the fourth generation of Warburtons working in the 1960’s to 1980’s, the firm being founded in 1876. The children were all brought up with the family’s values of caring about people, concern for their employees and customers and of course suppliers. In the 1990’s all the four brothers retired at the same time leaving their children to develop the firm and it is now the biggest bakery business in the country with 15 factories, 5,000 employees and a turnover of £600m. Warburtons support local charities and many youth organisations. We watched a DVD showing a happy workforce and

PREESALL TOWN COUNCIL NEWS Interested in Becoming a Town Councillor? Following the local elections in May the Town Council has two vacancies which it now needs to fill by seeking volunteers. Councillors contribute to the work of the Council by having a say about the things they care about; putting forward ideas for better services; responding to the needs and views of their constituents; seeking the best outcomes for local issues and getting involved in decision making by voting on matters considered by the Council. The Council meets on the second Monday evening every month with meetings lasting around two hours. If you are interested and would like to find out more, why not contact the Clerk or talk to one of the other Councillors. Their contact details can be obtained from the Clerk or via the Town Council’s website www. preesalltowncouncil.org. If you would like to apply for the vacancy please send a short email or letter of application, outlining why you want to become a Councillor and what you would bring to the Council, to the Clerk by Fri 17th July. Public Rights of Way Local Delivery Scheme The Town Council has agreed to undertake Public Rights of Way work on behalf of Lancashire County Council for a third year. If you have any problems with local public footpaths they should still be raised with the County Council in the first instance. The County Council will then offer the work to the Town Council and will pay for it to be done. Jubilee Garden Path Replacement & Bin Have you seen the new look to the Jubilee Garden behind the library? A new path has been laid to replace the old one that had sunk in places and had a number of broken flags.

WYRE JUNIORS FOOTBALL CLUB Wyre Juniors Football Club is now at the end of the season, with many of the teams taking a well-earned summer break. The 2014/15 season saw many of the Wyre Juniors teams achieve great successes and improvements on the previous football season. The club would like to congratulate all of the team players and all of the managers for their hard work and commitment to the club. Parents are also much appreciated at Wyre Juniors. Their help week in and week out is a huge contributor to the success of our village club. As part of our ongoing commitment to providing football locally to children we have a committee made up of willing volunteers: a mixture of coaches, parents, friends and family. Together, as well as the running of the different teams, the committee plan and organise various fundraisers and help with the smooth running of the club. This is an appeal to anyone who would be willing to spare a few hours to help in this area of our club. We are holding our AGM at Knott End Squash Club on Sun 19th July at 7:30pm. Please come along and see what we do and offer your help and support. Saturday Morning FC Whilst some of the older squads are on their summer breaks, Saturday Morning FC is still running. Come along to Preesall Park on Saturday morning as usual and why not bring a friend? We have facilities that cater for children from Reception and Years 1, 2 and 3. Once the children have progressed their basic skills they are all automatically entered into their age group team and start playing matches at
