Overview of the year
What a difference a year makes! It has been such a delight for me in this academic year 2021-22 to be able to bring the CPHS community back together, to meet so many parents and to see the full community spirit shine! In particular, we have thoroughly embraced the opportunity to bring the pupils together across year groups, and within their Houses, ensuring every pupil feels part of a happy, caring and supportive family.
Throughout the year and across the school, our pupils have continued to work hard and strive for academic excellence. We are very proud of our Year 11 pupils who achieved such incredible GCSE results with 96% of grades achieved at Grade 4 or above (National Average 77%) and more pleasingly, 40% of grades achieved were at Grade 7 or above (National Average 29%).
As a school, we have also aspired higher and have won recognition through a number of prestigious awards this year. Notably, graduating as a Microsoft Showcase School, in which we were recognised as a member of a global community of K-12 schools that harness digital transformation to drive a culture of learning, innovation, and continuous improvement, ensuring that our pupils have future-ready digital literacy skills We have also been recognised for achieving both the EYFS and Primary Quality Mark for English and Mathematics, the Eco Schools Green Flag Award, and for our Innovative Sports Programmes in the Active Essex Education and Muddy Stilettoes
Innovative Sports Awards. Thank you to all our staff who worked so hard to help us achieve these prestigious accreditations. Our focus throughout the year has been very much in continuing to ensure that your children do not only excel in their examinations but that they are also fully prepared with the skills, resilience and growth mindset required to become changemakers of tomorrow’s world. The progress our pupils continue to make in their digital literacy skills is inspiring as is the way that they have grown in understanding of the importance of protecting our environment, valuing different perspectives, giving back to the community and showing kindness
and consideration to others. I am also so proud of how so many pupils have taken on leadership roles and have been delighted with the introduction this year of STEAM, Eco and Diversity Ambassadors to our leadership roles.
During the year, we have also seen a number of changes within the school. In January 2022 we started taking pupils from 2 years old and in September 2022 we updated the school name to Colchester Prep & High School, to more fully reflect the age offering of our educational provision.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the CHSA and all our parent helpers for their continued support during this year. It was such a joy this year to be able to host once again so many fun, social events for the pupils which raised a great deal of money to purchase the many extras for the school; ranging from audio installations to Pom Poms, living walls to Shakespeare workshops. My particular, thanks go to the long serving and dedicated members of our CHSA Executive Team: Mr McLellan, Dr Bennett, Mrs Drake, Mrs Nicholls and Mrs Sephton. Finally, would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Mrs Goodwin, who has left CPHS after 17 years, sharing with us both her expertise and commitment to the safeguarding and wellbeing of all of our pupils in her role as Deputy Head.
I do hope that you enjoy this year’s publication of Royal Blue and that you are as inspired by how much our pupils have achieved

Character development
At CPHS, it is our aim to develop the character in our children to Be Well, Learn Well, Live Well. Our “Wellesley Award” encourages all our pupils to focus on their personal character development and it was a real privilege to listen to what are pupils have achieved this year with respect to character development, citizenship, creative expression and wellbeing when they delivered their speeches in June. We are so proud of all the pupils who presented with such confidence, and we look forward to seeing how they build upon their achievements in the next year.
tomorrow's World Changemakers of
To ensure that our pupils leave CPHS with the skills they need to be global changemakers, our pupils are presented with numerous opportunities to demonstrate leadership capacity by actively participating in school decisions that will actively shape their lives and the lives of their peers. Thank you to our Head Pupils, Prefects, House Captains, Sports Captains, Year 6 and Senior School Scholars, Language Leaders, Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors, School Councils and STEAM Ambassadors for your leadership and commitment to school spirit during the 2021-22 Academic Year.
Community Spirit
Our School fosters a safe, happy and supportive environment in which every child feels valued and respected and an integral part of an equal and inclusive community. Pupils mix happily across the age ranges creating a true sense of family and providing pupils with the opportunity to learn from their peers, take leadership positions and act as positive role models. It has been such a joy this year to be able to bring our whole school community back together again.
The year started with our annual Global Be Well Day where our Seniors organised activities with the younger pupils focused on teaching them about giving back and doing things that have a positive impact on their own wellbeing or the world around them.
As the year progressed, we also saw pupils from Senior School regularly joining our Prep School pupils for Form Time to help them with their learning, Year 9 Language Leaders leading French and Spanish classes and even some of our Year 10 and 11 pupils volunteering in Nursery and Pre-Prep during their breaktimes. Pupils in Years 4 to 6 also spent time with the pupils in PrePrep as reading buddies and to help them with their in-class learning. After school, our Seniors helped lead Netball, Cheerleading and Drone Club. Pupils also came together in our Year 3 to 10 whole school production of Aladdin, as a whole school choir at the Christmas, Spring and Summer Concerts and to ensure the success of our Christmas Fayre and Summer Fete.
This year the school community also worked collaboratively to develop posters showcasing the school ethos and values of “kindness, tolerance, equality, courage, perseverance and respect” and our Prep School delivered assembles emphasizing the importance of courage, respect and equality. The Debating Club final this year also debated the significance of school values; making clear their importance and why each of ours is key to creating a sense of belonging for all within the community.
A global perspective
To become the “changemakers of tomorrow’s world”, we encourage our pupils to be active and conscious citizens through three key themes: Equality Diversity and Inclusion; Social Responsibility and Citizenship; and Sustainability.
EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
During the year, our Diversity Ambassadors worked within the school community to build awareness of the importance of building an inclusive society, creating and delivering assemblies to their peers on topics including Black History Month, Diwali, LGBTQ+ and Autism. Year 10 pupils also welcomed an external speaker in April 2022, who spoke on topics such as Black Lives Matter and Everyone’s Invited.
Our Prep pupils also learnt sign language for International Day of Sign Languages whilst pupils across the school were able to enter our World Religion Day Image competition. In March, we enjoyed welcoming pupils from 5 different Cognita Schools in Chile to CPHS and our first Spanish exchange student from El Limonar International School in Murcia, Spain.
We were also delighted that three of our Year 10 pupils, Mackenzie, Sasha and Anastasha were selected to represent the school at the first every virtual Global Student Leader Conference.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND CITIZENSHIP
During the 2021-22 Academic Year, our pupils contributed to the CHSA Macmillan Coffee Morning, donated food to Foodbank, honoured our armed forces at the 40th Anniversary of Falklands Conflict and on Remembrance Day, raised funds for the NSPCC and Ukrainian Refuges, donated used uniform to Boots to Africa and celebrated differences on Odd Socks Day. Clearly illustrating that they understand the importance of thinking of others and giving back to the greater community.
It was with great joy that we also commemorated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, remembering her 70 years of service and devotion to the people of the UK, the Realms and the Commonwealth. Thank you also to all the pupils who have taken the time on the weekends to act as Ambassadors at our Open Days and school events for the local community.
SUSTAINABILITY
To encourage our pupils to create a greener world, this year we have focussed on three main priorities that underpin our school’s own commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 –food waste, clean air and energy reduction.
In March, in conjunction with Design Nature, Cullen Family Farm and Thomas Franks, we launched our Food Waste Action Campaign. During the day, pupils in years 4 to 8 explored the extent of food waste produced at each stage of the food journey and gained insights into the impact of food waste on the environment. Our pupils were also encouraged to start thinking about how they might reduce food waste in their own homes or whilst at school.
For National Clean Air Day, pupils in the Prep School were given an assembly to mark the day and the Eco Club measured the quality of air around our school streets using air quality monitors.
For all these activities, together with the amazing work our Eco Club have undertaken to raise eco-awareness in the school, we were delighted to be awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag this year.
A STEAM CURRICULUM
To ensure our pupils have the skills required for the 21st century, we introduce every pupil to a broad, well-balanced STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) based curriculum. Our pupils also love our dedicated STEAM clubs which extend their learning beyond the classroom, providing them with a wealth of creative hobbies to ignite their imaginations.
Pupils also have the opportunity to enter into national competitions and attain professional accreditations including The Arts Award, Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge and Microsoft Office Specialist.
Come on Blues!you
What a year we have had once again in the PE Department! The year started with pleasing performances in the School Sports Partnership and ISA football tournaments and in netball, our U-11 mixed netball team won their league and finished as runners up in the School Games High Fives Tournament.
In cross country, our House winners this year were the Romans in Prep and Normans in Seniors. There were some amazing efforts from our pupils with some going on to success at regional and national level.
Our House swimming champions were the Danes in both Prep and Seniors. In competition, William, Ben, Arthur and Louis all qualified for the National ISA Finals and performed brilliantly with most bringing home medals.
Our Prep cricketers were delighted to win the Gosfield School U-10 Kwik Cricket Championship and our Year 3 team finished Roman Cup Squash Champions, and our Year 4 and Year 5/6 team finished as runners up.
Our Sports Day winners were the Romans, who enjoyed a historic treble, winning the Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior events. We also saw a number of long-standing records broken.
Outside of school, many of our pupils have seen amazing success. Arthur (Y10) took 5th place in the British Triathlon Super Series, Ben (Y9) finished second in the ISA National Triathlon, Phoebe (Y8) represented Essex in Squash, Noah (Y9) was selected for the Essex Rebels Basketball team playing in the National League and also took Regional Trampolining Silver and Mackenzie (Y10) was selected to represent the East Region in Netball. Finally, Maddy (Y10) earned her first England international caps, representing the Lionesses in the U-17 Euro Championships Qualifiers
And all of these could not happen without the hard work and dedication of our PE Department who finished runners up in the Active Essex Education Awards and gained a Highly Commended in the Muddy Stilettoes Innovative Sports Programme Awards.
creativity Inspiring
The Arts are at the heart of a STEAM education and play a huge part in school life at CPHS, sparking creativity and critical thinking and helping our pupils to connect to their emotional self and others. It was such a joy therefore this year to be able to once again bring our community together for Concerts, Talent Shows, the Prep Nativity, The Litter Muncher Prep Production, the School Production of Aladdin, the Year 6 Afternoon Tea and Performance, the Nursery Summer Production and the CPHS Art Festival.
Our pupils also saw success in a number of local and national art competitions, have participated in the Bronze Arts Award programme, with three of our pupils also being featured in the Voice Magazine Uk as part of the Trinity Talent Class 2021 Arts Award, and have excelled in their peripatetic music examinations. This year, we were also delighted to launch our educational programme with the Mercury Theatre which has allowed us to offer our pupils new Shakespeare workshops, curriculum days and after school Podcasting and Musical Theatre Clubs. Our Year 8 pupils also represented the school at this
year’s Drama Fest. With the arrival of our 121 devices last year, we have also seen an explosion in the use of digital technology as part of their creative process.

update Outdoor learning CPHS
Outdoor learning is not a new thing, but in a world where the only constant is change, it is more important than ever to ensure that our pupils enjoy fresh air, exercise, physical challenges, and social interaction to maintain their mental and physical wellbeing. At CPHS, in the last year, all pupils from Year 1 to 9 benefitted from the opportunity to attend outdoor activity trips at Cuffley.
Year 5 and 6 were also fortunate enough to attend a PGL adventure trip where they learnt to surf and took part in outdoor obstacle courses.
Year 9 pupils travelled to the Great War Huts in Hawstead and the Imperial War Museum whilst our Humanities Department ran local walks for our Year 7 and 8 pupils to support their studies. Our Year 10 pupils did not miss out with two outdoor expeditions as part of their Duke of Edinburgh programme.
Thank you so much to our hard-working Executive Team and parent volunteers for hosting both a Christmas Fayre and a Summer Fete to ensure that our parents and pupils were able to once again come together as a community this year. Our pupils were also able to enjoy purchasing gifts for their family at the Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas Gift Stalls.
In total, £4,522 was raised from these events and uniform sales with £4,270 distributed back into the school.
Thank you to all the committee members and volunteers for all your hard work raising money for the school and enriching our children’s experience.
END OF AN ERA
Good luck to our Class of 2022. They have all achieved so much during their time at CPHS and we wish them success in their chosen futures. Please keep in contact with us and let us know how you progress in the next stage of your educational journey!.
In parting, Mrs Goodwin left us with the following message: “Life is an invitation to explore possibilities, to make mistakes and to evolve. At times things will get tough, yes - but you will get through them. There will be uncertainty, there will be hardships, there will be embarrassments, but they are what shape us. My wrong turns have opened doors I would never have seen. My fears have led to risks I would never have taken. We grow through our doubts and our unread destinies, as they take us to write the next lines in our ever-changing story”.
This year, we also said goodbye to Mrs Goodwin, who has dedicated 17 years of her teaching career to CPHS. We would like to thank her for her commitment and many contributions to our school and we wish her the best of luck in the next part of her own story.
