ESCAPING THE REAL WORLD
Architectural design thesis
CONCEPT
Technology has taken over today’s society and will continue to expand in the future. As technology has brought many people closer, it has also separated us from those who are nearby. People are slowly disconnecting with the real world where hiding behind screens has become the norm. The constant use and easy access of modern technology has help create connection within our world but also have produce isolation and created many mental issues, such as society anxiety, stress, depression, low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts and more. The rate of depression by itself have gone up, where 1 in 4 canadians has a degree of depression serious enough to need treatment in their life.
This thesis explores the concept of social inclusion by combining modern technology, nature and a cognitive strategy therapy called roleplaying implemented with virtual reality and the physical world. It will aid the training of desired characteristics of individuals and provide a sense of belonging while encouraging human connection.
SITE STUDY

A residental neighbourhood that is located on the east side Toronto, Ontario (Site location: Queen Street East and Dalhousie street). An area known for homelessness and drug deals which could protentially correlate to mental health. There are many shelters within the area, that offer services and help for those that are struggling. The area has degraded over the past decade with crimes and drug use. However, there is a fast-approaching transformation of building three new condos and a new park in the works of being develop. This could help create a more diverse demographic, but it does not solve the issues in homelessness or drug dealing as it will just push the problems away to another place and will create more complications.
The building is facing Queen Street East and has a side entrance on Dalhousie street. The plot is currently used as a parking spot and the site is very close to Moss Park. The area have a mix of different building types such as, residental, commerical, business, shelter, church, institutional and community center.

This gives the impression that they are stepping into another space and at the entry, people will need to drop off their phones and devices. There is also a long hallway in the middle of the plan that creates a connection to the front and back garden.
This floor is mainly designed to assist roleplaying therapy for patients. It will allow them to interact with the public and develop characteristic goals. Users will be able to explore all the different spaces and connect with patients, though areas such as a floral shop, cafe, virtual reality rooms, and more. The goal is to disconnect users with the digital world while helping everyone reconnect with each other and the real world.

GLASS WAVE
Architecture as Modifiers
CONCEPT
This project was Inspired by the illusion of mirage that happens within deserts. Mirror is the key material that will be used throughtout the exterior structure, reflecting off the bright blue sky above.
The focus of this design project is to create a structure that encourages users to perform the actions of sitting, standing, and laying down unconsciously. Each interaction represents the stages and concept of going into a body of water. The shape is created to represents a stewave intended to be located in the Mojave desert.
Size: Maximum 200 square feet
SITE STUDY

The structure is located in the Mojave Desert, in California, USA. It is in an area called Rainbow Welle, a deserted place with mountains, sand, and a few roads connecting to the site. The goal of the project is for the structure to reflect the natural environment is in, therefore it can be placed in any type of desert habitat around the world.

HOW IT WORKS
The user enters into the corridor where holes are punched out from the concrete to create a sun shower. After the experience of the sun shower, they are encouraged to go down the stairs onto the aqua epoxy and sit on the translucent concrete. The aqua epoxy is a representation of reflective water. Translucent concrete is also an important element to give an illusion of floating. Finally, the user should make their way to the triangle platform. This area allows the person to lay down and float.
MATERIALS
Mirror and concrete are the main materials used. These materials can create a sensation of coldness, similar to water. Part of the roof is made out of two way mirror, this allows the user to view the sky
Mirror - Used on the exterior to blend in with the surrounding environment
Two way mirror - Used on the exterior of the corridor and 2/3 roof
Translucent concrete - Used on stairs, seating and laying areas
Concrete - Used on corridor floor
Aqua Epoxy - Poured onto concrete floor

TWILIGHT
Architecture as Threshold
CONCEPT
“The most violent element in society is ignorance”
The project is to create an architectural structure that embodies the idea of a gatehouse to allow users to pass through within the site (Toronto, On. The design of the gatehouse was inspired to focus and contront the ignorance society have towards mental health. The paths will affect the user through projecting a feeling of joy or sadness by using the idea of light and dark.
Size: Maximum 200 square feet
SITE STUDY

The gateway is located underground on Grange Road in Toronto, Ontarto. Grange Road leads to a park where it is interconnected with OCAD University and Art Gallery of Ontario. The area is also filled with galleries, commercial art stores, and an overall artistic atmosphere. Many creative people are gathered in the area to share and express their artistic love and talent.
The design for the gateway project focuses mainly on the students from OCAD university who are dealing with mental health. Students within could be struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, or more. Art is a form that allows people to express their emotions and feelings. The gateway is supposed to reflect and create an immersive experience for users that portrays a dark side and a light side, where one is portraying the idea of mental health issues and the other side as the happy narcissistic society.

How it works
There are two corridors, the first one protrays light and happiness whereas the one beside displays darkness and depression. There is a two-way mirror that divides the corridors. This element allows light to emit into the dark corridor. On the dark side, people can sit alone and immerse themselves in loneliness while envying the “light”. The visitors who enter the light side would experience their reflections from the mirror that introduce a narcissist projection.
MATERIAL
Wood - used in “light” corridor to perceive warmth
Concrete - used in “dark” corridor to perceive coldness

SIMPLY WARM
Interior Design: Residential
This project is to redesign a suitable place for the cilent using a base floorplan.
CILENTS: Tibor,Delores
and their daughter, Nicole
Tibor and Delores are both accountants and likes to casually work at home. They spend a lot of time with family and friends as they visit often and would like a big kitchen to cook and entertain their guest. Tibor prefers antiques, traditional and likes Contemporary Canadian artworks, however, Delores is experimental in styles and artworks but would like the place to be bright and warm.
CONCEPT
The idea is to bring a feeling of bright, warmth, casualness, and richness into the home of Tibor and Delores. To mix a blend of traditional and modern styles to suit both their unique palettes with elegant approaches. The home will create delight for everyone visiting because of the warm, inviting furnitures and colours. The design will create calmness but still rich to accompany the busy lifestyles of Tibor and Delores, as well as their visitors.
