Few things speak of Helena’s vitality and bright future quite so much as the recognition of the Queen City as a viable market for expansion, by nationally lauded businesses. It is this very belief, that Helena is a community on the rise, which brings to us the city’s newest restaurant offering: Panda Express. Chadwick Haight, manager for the newest franchise of this 30-year established chain, is full of nothing but excitement for the opportunities offered, by his employer. “I’m from Helena. I went to Helena Middle School and Helena High School. It’s exciting to come back. I spent some time with Qwest and Radio Shack, then Panda Express reached out and recruited me out of Kalispell. Then I spent some time working for them in Spokane, before they offered me this opportunity.” With four Montana locations, two in Billings and one in Kalispell - along with over 1600 locations nationwide and even internationally – Panda Express provides fresh vegetables and sauces made in-house, elements of modern and upscale dining, all in a casual restaurant environment. “Fast-casual is what we consider ourselves. We are the fastest growing chain in that fast-casual category, right now,” says Haight. Helena’s Panda Express is a new model for the chain, removing the iconic bright colors and semi-oriental styled façade, in favor of sharp, modern-looking angles and decor, revised

architectural styling, and a more natural color scheme. “It’s part of a sort of rebranding. The only thing that’s the same in this store, from the other stores, is my cooking range. This is just so different, I love it.” “Well, Panda Express is an amazing organization,” Haight comments, on his time with the company. “It actually started as the Panda Inn. Our owner, Andrew, started it as a higher-end restaurant. He got a request from a local mall to work on a little bit smaller version, in the mall and that’s where Panda Express was born. “ Chadwick continues, “They [Andrew and his wife Peggy] are still very active in the company. For every manager with Panda Express,

there’s a rigorous training process, obviously. As part of that, they all end up going down to California and meeting with Andrew, because he wants to make sure they share the commitment to his vision. Really, that’s about taking care of people. They’re taking the time to meet with the people in the company.” But just what all is involved, in that vision? “’Living the Panda Way,’ is what we call it,” he explains. “When it comes to people we offer them opportunities to continually grow. We’re always developing others, always teaching, always coaching. As a manager, my job is to take care of my people. It’s really great to be able to provide that kind of environment,” stated Chadwick. “In Helena, Panda’s minimum wage starts at $9 an hour. I wouldn’t pay anyone any less than that, because we work really hard. We’re really committed to growth, so it’s great to be able to provide that.” Beyond the in-house opportunities available to employees, Chadwick explains the involvement of Panda Express has with their resident communities through their charitable branch; Panda Cares. “The bell that you heard,” a bell had been ringing about two minutes earlier, “was because someone donated their change to the Children’s Miracle Network. Any donated money stays here, locally. As part of our coming to Helena, we’ve actually set up close

Say You Saw It In The Shopping News!

The Newspaper for Shoppers

From The Publisher Wow! Has it been two weeks already? Time is flying by. As we bid farewell to the perfect weather, it’s time to take stock of some basics for the winter. We suggest you check your tires, or maybe it’s time to upgrade your car or truck, whatever the case you will find the options you need here in the Shopping News. Thanksgiving is less than a month away so you might want to consider a new dining set for all your holiday entertaining or new bedroom furniture for your family and guests. Again, we can

help you find what you are looking for in the Helena Shopping News. Make sure you tell all of our sponsors you saw their ad in the Shopping News. I have heard many comments about our apple crisp recipe from our last issue. Many of you tried it out and shared with me how it was absolutely delicious. I only have one question, why didn’t anyone bring me some? Feel free to send in your favorite recipe to share with others. I was at a Chamber of Commerce event last week and met a couple who really

out working with non-profits putting that all together. Anyone can go to pandaexpress.com/fundraisers and sign up and put on a fundraiser for themselves; clubs, organizations. If I had a fundraiser every day, I’d be the greatest manager in the world. That would be fantastic; it would make me so happy.” As our conversation came to an end, Chadwick eager to return to both his busy lunch-time crowd and to the support of his crew, he left me with the sentiment, “The great thing is that it [this Panda Express store] is something completely new for Helena and Panda Express. It’s something that is, obviously, really exciting. I hope to provide a different level of quality here; I invite everyone to come down and give it a try.” I, did just that, and suggest you do the same. Visit them on the first of November, enjoy a new dining experience and, best of all, support our own Helena YMCA in the process.

to, I believe, twenty fund-raisers already, for local non-profits.” Chadwick speaks with growing enthusiasm, as he goes on. “So there are going to be days coming up, where people come in and mention their name [of that event’s charity], they’re going to get a percentage of that sale and we’re just going to give a big, fat check, to that organization. Again, all that money stays here.” One such event is coming up on November 1st, benefiting the Helena YMCA, less than two weeks after the store opened its doors. “We’re going to be giving them 20% of the sales. Anyone who comes in on the 1st, we’re just giving it all away to the YMCA. We have a couple of associates who really love the idea that we’re giving back to the community and they’re

Thoughts On Customer Service

SPECI A LS

PAGE 6

Cathy Burwell, President/CEO train your staff for excellent customer service. It IS your biggest image (good, bad, or ugly…….!) From A Few Good Men ( Jack Nicholson) “You can’t handle the truth!” Make sure that you CAN handle the truth so that you address each and every customer concern and issue. A customer who feels that their problem was correctly addressed and resolved will appreciate your efforts and perhaps remain a loyal customer. Finally from Dead Poets Society (Robin Williams) “Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys, Make your lives extraordinary” - Seize the opportunity to make your customer service the absolute best it can be – make it and your business extraordinary!!! If you are out shopping and you receive excellent service, be sure to thank the person who helped you. A note to the manager or owner is always nice if you have someone go out of their way for you. On the other hand, if you receive poor service, you should let the owner or manager know the specifics. If the manager doesn’t do anything about it or at least acknowledge it, you will then have to decide if you will patronize them in the future. One thing I learned from a Steve Beck customer service workshop that may make a big difference for the service you receive........make an effort to be friendly and nice to the person waiting on you at the very first encounter - especially if it appears they may be having a tough day. I have tried this in the check out line at the grocery store and it is surprising how the person seems to perk up with your interest and friendliness. So sometimes it is about being a good customer - being proactively nice to the clerk may result in a much better experience. Here’s a big SALUTE to those businesses that prioritize customer service!!! They really do want your business! Cathy Burwell, President/CEO Helena Area Chamber of Commerce

fter one of my columns regarding shopping local, I received a couple of calls from residents who expressed their frustration over customer service from some local businesses. I can relate to this because, unfortunately, there are businesses out there that do not place enough emphasis on treating their customers well and going the extra mile for them. The Chamber does customer service training with expert trainers at least once a year and yet, we never seem to reach the businesses that really need it. It’s sort of like parent-teacher conferences…….most of the time…………, the parents of kids who are struggling never attend them. Sometimes I’d like to walk into a business with a flyer for training and announce “your employees need this training, badly!” But that certainly wouldn’t make for a pleasant visit and probably would be cause for them to not be happy with their chamber of commerce! Here’s some Hollywood quotes that seem to relate to customer service: From Cool Hand Luke, Strother Martin said “What we’ve got here is….. failure to communicate”. Communication with your customers can make or break your business. Something to remember is that before you respond or communicate to a customer with a problem, you need to LISTEN! Hear them out before making a thoughtful response (that isn’t defensive!). Sometimes they just want to know that their problem has been heard and recognized. Even if the customer is wrong, be courteous and have a solution that will make them happy and feel like they were important enough for you to work towards a solution or compromise. From the Terminator 2: Judgment Day – Arnold Schwarzenegger said: “Hasta la vista, baby”. Unfortunately, poor customer service can have a very lasting and far reaching effect. For some customers – treat me bad once and I’ll give you one more chance. For other customers, once is enough – they are through with you. For all who experience poor customer service, they will tell a minimum of 7 other people of the experience. How many times those 7 people repeat it and how they decide to embellish the story can absolutely kill your business’ reputation. From Titanic with Leonardo DiCaprio – “But this ship cannot sink” “She’s made of iron, sir!” “I assure you, she can……and she will. It is mathematical certainty.” If you think you will succeed because your business is solid, has the best products, the best location and building and cannot fail………you could be wrong. One rude employee, one unhelpful employee, or one issue/ problem that you mishandled as the owner/boss can “sink the ship”. From Forest Gump (Robin Wright) “Run Forest Run!” Just remember you can run but you cannot hide from not putting in the effort to continuously

Reminding All Seniors

I

t’s that time of year to make sure your Medicare Part D prescription coverage will meet your needs for the coming New Year. What a pain! You mean I have to look at it every year? Yes! It’s crazy, but you really should, and the following is why. When the federal Rx plan was designed it was decided that private companies would administer the plans. But, they were not required to cover all medications available. The minimum requirement was that they were to handle at least two medications in each category of meds. They were also allowed to change which meds they handle from year to year, and even change mid-year in certain situations. Regretfully, each New Year, pharmacists have to inform some of their customers, that the drug they’ve been using is no longer covered by the plan they’re on, or that

Bill Meuret their co-pay has changed. You can avoid this by doing some homework. I know you don’t like homework anymore than when you were a “youngin”. But, it is essential unless you enjoy surprises! This time of year the company that administers your Part D plan should send you information on what meds their covering for the upcoming year. You should check this information carefully. You can also go to Medicare.gov and can do a search for drug plans available in your area. With this search you can enter your current med-

ications, and it will sort all plans available, and rank them based on your medication needs. Should you need to make a change, you can enroll online at Medicare.gov, or by calling the company, or contacting a licensed agent. For most Medicare recipients the Federal Rx plan is a major help with their medication costs. But, they could have made it a whole lot simpler by requiring the administrating companies to carry all meds available. The shuffling of meds available each year is unnecessary, and too much hassle, especially for those advanced in years with memory and cognition issues. Don’t forget now, you have till December 7th to make changes if you need too. By Bill Meuret - seniors insurance specialist with Medigap MT

Celebrate the 2013 fall season with the 30th Annual Downtown Helena Fall Art Walk on Friday, Nov. 8 from 5-9 p.m. throughout Downtown Helena. This festive Downtown Helena, Inc. event brings downtown businesses, over 100 of Montana’s finest artists and the Helena community together as the “Best Small Art Town in America!” From photography and paintings to ceramics and live performances, the Fall Art Walk showcases a diverse range of artwork created predominantly by Montana artists. This year over 50 Downtown Helena businesses from the Great Northern Town Center through the end of the Walking Mall have registered for the Fall Art Walk. Each business participating in the Fall Art Walk will display a candle-lit luminary outside of their business. Some of the artists this year include Jim Howard, a watercolor artist and Art Walk veteran, as well as the new and edgy artist Eli Kultgen who is a painter and printmaker in the medium of duct tape. You can also enjoy the Queen City Ballet dancers, who will be featured in the windows of many of the participating businesses. Listen live music at Benny’s Bistro, Exploration Works, Birds & Beasleys and the Four0six. The four0six also invites Art Walkers to stroll in for the re-grand

Montana City Grill After nine years of managing local franchises, Chris Rehor decided to pursue his own, locally-owned, restaurant dream, without being subject to corporate influence, purchasing the Montana City Grill, which Rehor has owned and operated for the last eight years. He liked that the Grill was “two restaurants in one. You can enjoy a fine-dining experience on one side, or grab a more casual burger and beer, on the other.” “I didn’t want to mess with a winning formula,” Chris says, when asked what changes he made upon taking over. “All the sauces: our signature marinara, famous huckleberry barbeque sauce, salad dressings and the rest are all made in house and fresh daily. We kept all those great recipes, when I took over the business.” But don’t even begin to think that means he rested on the Grill’s laurels; Chris had a vision, for the place aggressively expanding both sides of the business. “I really wanted to push expanding the bar side: adding more local micro-brews, nine big screen TVs to show all the NFL games and be able to support a wide variety of sporting events,” which he now has. “On the fine-dining side, we offer prime rib seven days a week, which other restaurants don’t do.” He’s also set the Grill up to be a venue for a semi-monthly wine-tasting event. “Every 2nd and 4th Thursday, starting at 6 o’clock, a wine distributer comes in

SAVE 20%

and presents four wines. At the end of each wine club, you can buy the wines at a discounted price.” This arrangement has given him an opportunity to expand the business’ own wine selection, becoming one of the largest in town. He When you visit the really Montana City Grill, on a regular basis, you are does going to get to know the amazing staff. “I’ve had the same servers and bartenders, work from when I took over. They’re friendly and very experienced.” The exception is his chef, who’s been onboard for about a year, now, and has taken the winning food and focused on the plating. “He really does amazing work,” Rehor enthuses. With surf, turf, pastas, those unique huckleberry pork ribs, burgers and much more, the Montana City Grill is home of one of the largest and most varied menus in the area and well worth the short, 4-mile drive. And when you see the large parking lot full of cars, don’t worry; there’s plenty of seating space. During the holidays, most of those people will be enjoying the hospitality of catered events, in the upstairs meeting room, with space for sixty. So stop by the Montana City Grill and meet Chris and his crew. It’s a perfect fit, no matter what kind of dining experience you are after.

EMPLOYMENT

Job Seekers Tips Brought To You By The Reference Check Employers often ask for reference checks to confirm a prospective employee’s former work experience, but not everyone realizes the importance of this particular aspect of the hiring process - or how to manage it well. At A2Z Staffing Solutions, there are three basic rules for making sure your former experience is a glowing review! Tip One: List your supervisors and not your colleagues. Remember, a professional reference check is not a request for feedback from your friends or co-workers, it’s an opportunity for your future supervisor to understand more about how productive you are in the office. They want to see whether you are able to achieve and maintain company goals in a way that is effective - and reliable. Tip Two: Contact your references before anyone else does. It’s always a good move to call your former employers ahead of time and let them know to expect a message from the company you’re applying with. This gives them a chance to reflect on your job performance and prepare for any questions your current potential employer may have. Tip Three: Do include your list of references as a

separate attachment. Do not put that list on your resume with the rest of your information. Tip Four: Prepare a minimum of 3 great references in advance, and keep them on file. Always include them as separate attachments. If you use the same ones repeatedly, this saves time and also adds to the review process in a positive way. Go ahead and ask your former employer if it is possible to get a short letter on company letterhead with a brief description of your position, the time you were employed, and how successful you were at the office in your previous role. Having a written note from your former supervisor is an excellent way to make an impression, and having several at the same time build a track record that any company can appreciate. Remember, a professional reference is a critical part of your hiring process and can be a deciding factor in your success. Since human resource departments vary from one organization to the next, sometimes you won’t be able to get as much detail as you may prefer. Don’t let that stop you from taking the time to build the best reference file you can. It pays to present yourself in the best light possible!

JILL JACKSON’S HOLLYWOOD By Tony Rizzo HOLLYWOOD -- While Mia Farrow was busy trying to deny Woody Allen’s paternity of their son, Ronan, Woody went right on working as usual. We realize Mia’s still hurt because he dropped her and married her adopted daughter, but wouldn’t a DNA test have been a better way to prove her claim? Because Woody is a very private person, he had no comment on her announcement. Woody never even showed up to accept the four Oscars he’s won: as screenwrit-

Woody Allen er for “Annie Hall” (1978), “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1987) and “Midnight in Paris” (2011), as well as one for directing “Annie Hall.” He’s acted in 54 films, written 48 films and directed 45 films. His most recent film, “Blue Jasmine,” with Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K. and Andrew Dice Clay, has grossed close to $60 million. That film was his return to shooting in the United States, in New York and San Francisco, but he’s back to cost-cutting, shooting an untitled film in France, with Emma Stone, Colin Firth and Marcia Gay Harden. We’ll soon see his return as just an actor in John Turturro’s film “Gigolo,” which Turturro wrote, directed and stars in with Allen. Woody plays a

bookstore owner who becomes a pimp for Turturro. “Modern Family’s” Sofia Vergara and Sharon Stone play two of their clients -- talk about fantasy! *** And speaking of Woody, Marshall Brickman won an Oscar for writing “Annie Hall” with him, and was one of the writers of the smash stage musical “Jersey Boys.” He’s part of the team bringing a new musical to Broadway about “The King of the Cowboys,” Roy Rogers, and his wife, Dale Evans. Baby boomers should remember their TV show and his hit theme song, “Happy Trails to You”! Also becoming a musical, headed for Las Vegas, is “The Love Boat.” It will be based on the original Jeraldine Saunders novel and use songs popular during the series run, 1977-86. Saunders, the inspiration for Julie McCoy, the cruise director, is part of the

producing team and promises she will restore some of the more risque details of the novel that were too hot for television. They’d be better off opening the show in another Nevada city, Laughlin. At least it has a harbor with riverboats and water! *** Imagine ... one day news and magazine shows are announcing that “Keeping up With the Kardashians” might be canceled because of low ratings, and the next day, Chris Jenner (whose first husband was Robert Kardashian) conveniently announces that, despite all their denials, she and Bruce Jenner have been living apart for almost a year! It will supposedly play out on their show. It’s always good to have a plan B to grab ratings! (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.
