Think ProBuild for Windows As I sit down to write this, parts of western Montana have been told to expect wind gusts of up to 90 MPH (wind speeds in a level 1 hurricane start at a feeble 75 MPH) over the weekend. Upon hearing this, my imagination treated me to images of pine trees falling over and the windows in my home shattering under the force of such severe gales. I imagine my family huddled in a windowless closet, trying to stay warm until the worst has passed and we can begin repairing the damage done by the angry west wind and I chuckled, comfortable in the notion that such disaster is unlikely and just one of the scare tactics so often employed by newscasters to boost ratings. But then I thought about it a bit more; this really isn’t a joke at all. Not long ago I was talking to a coworker who told me of how he has had to keep his furnace constantly full of fire wood, lest his home’s temperature drop dangerously and cause his family undue distress. You can actually feel a breeze near some of his windows - even before the weekend’s expected blasts - and what he has had to spend on firewood and natural gas is staggering. Worse, I know his story is hardly a unique one. All too many Montanans are facing the coldest part of the winter – usually February – with windows that are hardly up to the task of keeping the house warm; my wallet cringes, in empathy. What is a homeowner to do?

Rusty and Sean Well, the National Resource Defense Council would suggest that, among other things, replacing your windows as a good start. Windows account for as much as 50% of the heat lost in American homes and I know that heating is not an insignificant chunk of my monthly winter power bills. But to whom can you turn? Rusty and Sean at ProBuild are a local, experienced install team. Rusty is a third-generation in a family of construction professionals (who’ve all worked right here in Helena) and Rusty himself has been with ProBuild since the 70’s. He will personally measures and installs windows from the nationally-recognized Andersen and Jeld-Wen window brands. Sean has been with ProBuild for 17 years and recently

took over as the stores Millwork Specialist position. In short, they’re here to stay, to make sure the work is done right and they will be there to talk to, if anything needs to be addressed for their customers. They are knowledgeable and confident in the services they provide, “We want to offer our years of expertise and quality installations, with no fear of not being able to call anybody if you do have an issue, or a question, or a problem. We’ll be here to take care of them. It’s all done locally, you aren’t getting a crew out of Spokane who you never see again. “ We offer a warranty on the install and labor,” says Rusty. “And the windows themselves come with a warranty on the product,” adds Sean. “We take the old windows away, trim the inside and outside, caulk and weather-seal the windows. The only thing we don’t do is the painting,” jokes Rusty. “There are more color options than ever before, which is a huge selling-point to most people I talk to,” says Sean, which makes it easier than ever to match them to your home’s existing accents. After Rusty measures your windows, they are custom ordered on the Andersen or JeldWen standards, whichever you have chosen to install. “People often replace a single window, saying it’s just super bad and after they’ve seen the difference that one makes, they want to get the rest of the house replaced, it just makes that

HOLLYWOOD -- As Chris Pine waits to film the third “Star Trek” movie, due out in 2016, he’s taking on another franchise. He’ll be Jack Ryan in the $80 million “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” being directed by Kenneth Branagh. Pine has big shoes to fill. Alec Baldwin played Jack Ryan in 1990’s “The Hunt for the Red October” (gross $200 million); in 1992 and 1994, Harrison Ford did “Patriot Games” (gross $178 million) and “A Clear and Present Danger” (gross $300 million); and in 2002, Ben Afflick played Ryan in “The Sum of All Fears” (gross $194 million). This “Recruit” has a lot to live up to. ***

Bette Midler NBC must be having deja vu replacing Jay Leno as host of “The Tonight Show” again. Jimmy Fallon, who replaced Conan O’Brien on “Late Night” five years ago when NBC fired Leno, only to bring him back, debuts Feb. 17. Jay is mum, but rumors persist he’s being wooed by other networks like CNN, which is making NBC lose sleep

*** Jerry Weintraub, who produced the Liberace biopic “Behind the Candelabra” for HBO, will next do the same for Mae West. Director William Friedkin, who won an Oscar for “The French Connection” and a Golden Globe for “The Exorcist,” will have Bette Midler as Mae West. Harvey Fierstein who wrote “Torch Song Trilogy,” “La Cage Aux Folles” and “Kinky Boots,” based his screenplay on Mae’s book “Goodness Has Nothing to Do With It.” In 1970, at 77, Mae personally interviewed men to play opposite her in “Myra Breckinridge.” One of those men was an unknown, out-of-work actor named Tom Selleck. In 1978, at 85, Mae starred in “Sextette” opposite the soon-to-be James Bond, Timothy Dalton. Because she had trouble hearing, she wore a hearing aid that fed her

lines. A news helicopter interfered with her reception, causing her to give the traffic report instead of her lines. In 1969, critics said Barbra Streisand did Mae West when she played Dolly Levi in “Hello Dolly.” The following year brought “Dinah East,” in which Jeremy Stockwell played a 1950s movie queen who was actually a man. In 1982, Ann Gillian played Mae West in a TV biopic bearing her name. I once saw Mae sitting in her limo at a gas station off Sunset Boulevard. She said she wanted her fans to see her so they could grow old together. She passed away in 1980 at 87, but her one-liners live on: “When women go wrong, men go right after them”; “A man in the house is worth two in the street”; and “If I make it hard for you will you hold it against me? And hurry!” (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Assume you’re in four spades and West leads a low heart. East collects two heart tricks and shifts to the jack of diamonds. How would you play the hand? The outlook is not good. It seems certain that you’ll lose a diamond and a club

and go down one. Of course, you might get lucky and catch the doubleton Q-J of clubs, but the 7 percent chance of this occurring doesn’t cheer you up much. But when you consider the matter further, a brighter prospect emerges. You might be able to make the contract via an elimination play. So you win the diamond return with the king, draw three rounds of trumps and cash the A-K of clubs. After the trumps and clubs both turn out to be divided 3-2, your chances of making four spades improve significantly. You next cash the ace of diamonds, and then, with fingers crossed, you exit from dummy with a club. When East wins the trick

with the queen, which is what you were hoping for, the contract becomes a virtual certainty. Assuming East started with five hearts for his overcall, he now has nothing but hearts left in his hand. When he returns one, you discard a diamond from one hand and ruff in the other to make four spades. The hand illustrates how a declarer can sometimes salvage what appears to be a hopeless contract. The key to success in such situations is to try to picture an opposing distribution that would allow you to get home safely. More often than not, your hopes will go unrewarded, but occasionally the outcome will be a happy one. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

“Vivien Leigh: An Intimate Portrait” by Kendra Bean (Running Press, $30) Reviewed by Larry Cox If Vivien Leigh had made only two films, “Gone with the Wind” and “Streetcar Named Desire,” she still would have managed to achieve film immortality. Her first love was the stage, but it was her luminous intensity in motion pictures that helped establish her lasting reputation. When Vivien Leigh walked into a room, her aura triggered

a magnetism that drew people in and left them spellbound. Kendra Bean’s biography of Leigh is the first to have utilized the Laurence Olivier Archives that features an invaluable collection of personal letters and documents ranging from interview transcripts to film contracts and even medical records. Because of this access, Bean’s book is the first to examine in such intimate detail the fascinating, troubled and often misunderstood life of Leigh. Vivien Mary Hartley was born in 1913 in India, the daughter of a British military officer. When the Hartley family returned to England in 1931, Vivien was enrolled at the Royal

Academy Dramatic Arts in London. She married a barrister, Herbert Leigh Holman, a year later. The marriage didn’t last, but Vivien used his middle name professionally. After several minor roles, she was cast in a play, “Mark of Virtue,” in 1935, and it was during its run that Vivien met Laurence Oliver. The chemistry between them was especially evident in their first film together, “Fire Over England” in 1937. Bean documents the highs and lows of Leigh’s life and career with clarity and sensitivity. The incredible images -- many published for the first time, -- add just the right touch. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Angove feels that it is important for the essence of the artist, as well as that of the subject, to show in her paintings. She works in several mediums, but primarily in watercolor because of challenge in allowing the medium to “do its own thing.” Her favorite subjects are florals, still lifes, landscapes, birds and small animals. In recent years Angove has focused on miniature art which has been accepted into shows across the country and even earned her recognition interna-

Help Send Two and Reach Many Mother and son, Carol and Jeremiah Leggett, are raising money ($4,000) for a cause which will help many individuals increase, not only their quality of life, but also increase its meaning to them. They will be part of a team going to El Salvador from Helena First Assembly of God Church. They will be ministering through King’s Castle Ministries in El Salvador, doing a lot of street ministry, through programs with songs and dramas. The team will also will be ministering in churches at night. They may do some construction or any other specialized ministry when needed. The focus while in El Salvador will be on children, most of who will see or be forced to participate in horrific gang related acts…unless they get the help they so desperately need. These children need a way out; they need hope. Through this ministry, they will have the opportunity to hear and learn about the Gospel, have needs met, and be able to share this hope with their families (we will also have time to minister to families). Carol and Jeremiah cannot be part of this team without your generous support. Please go to the King’s Castle website if you desire to learn more about this ministry. (www.kingscastle.org). To support us financially, please go to our personal ministry site www.faithcasterradio.com and find the “Donate to the El SalScan to donate vador Mission” button and you can donate online. We thank you in advance for your careful thought and generosity. *Any additional money raised will go directly to King’s Castle Ministries*

What is a QR Code, and Why Should You Care? The Short Version: A QR Code is a newer form of a bar code that is frequently used to pass information to a mobile device, generally they pass on website URL’s or info that would be hard-unpleasant to type from the average keypad used on most mobile devices. Typical uses include launching websites, logging into Wi-Fi hotspots in public places or finding online coupons with your smart phone or tablet (the uses are potentially infinite). So why should you care? In a nutshell it will make your mobile usage easier, and who doesn’t like easier? Plus you can get discounts from online coupons, and saving money is Good™.

The Long Version: History The QR code system was invented in 1994 by Toyota’s subsidiary, Denso Wave. Its purpose was to track vehicles during manufacture; it was designed to allow high-speed component scanning. Although initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR codes now are used in a much broader context, including both commercial tracking applications and convenience-oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users.
