The Jungle Guardian

A guardian is one who takes care, who watches over and whom we can trust. In the image of Alfredo Maffei that accompanies this post, he is responsible for the forest, becoming nature's caretaker. Its attributes are in the expressiveness of the eyes, in the presence of the rainbow which, in several mythologies, is seen as a link, a passage between the world of gods and human beings, and in the protagonism of the open hand, spread with its five fingers. in evidence, remembering that this number is associated with the hope of reaching a quintessence that is beyond the four elements (earth, air, water and fire) and the four cardinal points (North, South, East and West). With the strength of the lion linked to the sun and the dominion of darkness associated with the black panther, Alfredo Maffei's guardian of the forest can carry out his work.

My name is Amanda Maria Padovani. Painting for me is a source of personal fulfillment, my most sincere way of expressing my feelings, emotions, and what I am feeling at that moment. I always try to show in my works my sensibility to the world around us. In the work "Innocence" these were days of connection and unique moments with my dog that I am so attached to, his innocent look that enchants me so much. Each of my canvases has a special meaning and a different message, a different feeling I try to express. And even when I think of something specific, I am delighted with the countless ways it can be interpreted. I think a lot about each color to use, and the meaning each color has, each technique, and most importantly, what I want to actually try to demonstrate with it. Each person in my works, are people who I consider a lot, people who have emotional weight for me and that I have shown this love in the form of painting. Anyway, I will always carry with me the art as part of my life, seeking through it to express myself, communicate and fill it with the color of gratitude.

Lives and works in Curitiba, PR, Brazil. Visual artist and designer, she has participated in several individual and collective exhibitions in Brazil and abroad. She researches the intersections among photographic, pictorial and graphic languages and their implications in relation to the passage of time, as in her recent series of photographs ‘Combinantes’, which is, on the one hand, a record of the passage of time and the inescapable transformations it causes in matter and, on the other hand, a record of the artist's journey in her creation process over time. The photographic images in the series record marks, stains and oxidation that appear on the surface of three iron plates that in 2004 were part of an exhibition of self-portraits by the artist. After this exhibition, these plates – ‘ferrous bodies’, as the artist prefers to call them – were kept for a long period of ‘hibernation’. In 2022, these 'ferrous bodies' were awakened from their deep sleep to become the protagonists and source of inspiration for the 'Combinantes' series that participated in the collective exhibition 'Oxygen'. Nothing could be more inspiring for the artist's eye – it was the time and oxygen that accompanied the sleep of these ferrous bodies causing so many other mutations.

Savi on vanhin kaikista materiaaleista joista ihminen on luonut taideteoksia. Olen viime vuosina tehnyt pronssivalua varten veistoksia vahaan. Kun pehmeä mukautuva vaha kangistuu pronssin ikuiseen otteeseen sormenjälkeni kuljeutuvat patsaan pinnasta viestinä tulevaisuuteen. Amurinleopardin äänettömien askelien kaiku vaikuttaa perhosen siipien havinaan, linnun lentoon ja ihmisen katseeseen kohti tähtitaivasta.

Clay is the oldest of the materials humans have used to portray art. Hundreds of generations have shaped their dreams, hopes, worship, sorrow, and joy out of clay. Clay is a fine grained material consisting of particles from the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms — it is alive and it can preserve memories. When I shape the clay with my hands I can feel the reverberations between the past and the future through my hands. Lately, I have formed statues out of wax to be cast into bronze. When the soft and malleable wax hardens into the eternal grasp of bronze my fingerprints are carried from the surface of the statue as a message into the future. The echoes of the silent steps of an Amur leopard affect the flutter of the wings of a butterfly, the flight of a bird, and the gaze of a human towards the starry night.

"Liquid Emeralds"

In my photographic work, in my landscapes, I seek enchantment, poetry, crossing a bridge between my sensitive and the other’s.

Always appropriating images that I photograph with my cell phone, during my travels, and then fragmenting the whole imagined at times into a game of clippings, at the moment, adding previously materialized fabrics. Within this abstract figurative in an eternal resignification, I mix “the pulsar of the meaning of life”, memories of my childhood with my father where nature always had another body, another place, shaded woods, delineated paths, elevated, smell and colors.

This series “Liquid Emeralds” emerged from many moments of the essence of nature in its most genuine and striking form for living beings, water. She who takes us back to our origins in the maternal womb, an element that protect us, inhabits us, satisfies us, serves us, makes us happy.

Kuvataiteilija, taidemaalari, taideterapeutti, kouluttaja, opettajana mm.

Visual artist, painter, art therapist, trainer and teacher, Lecturer in Aalto University, The Scool of Art, Design and Architecture. Member of Finnish Painters’ Union & Helsinki Artists’ Association.

At thirteen my wish for having my own oil paints was fulfilled. I was fascinated by their colours. At the same time it felt like coming home and a new world was opening up. My dream was to become an artist. Over the years, the techniques have changed, but my relationship with painting is essentially the same. In the best moments when painting, a strong sense of existence and its meaning overwhelms me.

For me, painting is like loving. It is a dialogue, searching and erring, sometimes mysterious, incomprehensible and complex, demanding and absolute, but at the same time bringing joy and happiness. It is surrender and letting go. Without it, life would be less in every respect.

I paint, make sculptures and assemblages of objects and build installations. I use almost everything, often recycled materials, as materials for my art work. My work is a dialogue between consciousnes and subconcious. For me, making art is thinking and a journey of discovery into the unknown.

For me, art is a life-long research journey and an adventure into people. Everything that we are physically and mentally, human relations and human relationships, not to mention the relationship with nature. I wonder about them endlessly. During my long life, there have been many complete environmental changes, somersaults of common life values. The finiteness of all life has gotten to me to play with the idea of what is important in life and what is not. Also nature inspires me, the power, growth and beauty of nature and life. Without forgetting the colours. I live from colours and their thousands of shades!

I'm Carolina Reis, artist and illustrator. I’m graduated in Fashion Design and, while in college, I realized how much I like to draw the human figure, specially the female one. I have improved my technique and the characteristics of my drawing and even named "my girls" series Olívia. I have illustraded T-shirts, bags, acessories and some walls in the buildings of my hometown. I like to paint feminine portraits having daily things as reference, like a song, a book, a serie, a picture or even a feeling, representing all of this in a look, a color combination, in something as sincere and profound as a portrait can be.

Daniele Bloris is an artist and psychoanalyst from the city of Rio de Janeiro. Her lines flow in an infinite time, appropriating the space they find, in an organic undulation of lines that entangle and dissolve.

Lines drawn on paper, by the hand that lets itself be carried away, by the movement of a drawing that is being configured in its own making, that is being transformed with each stroke, that marks the paper and demarcates its space. Art as an invention that produces a breach, a path, the defense of a space of freedom is life that is in this doing.

An itinerary of resignification by the visual artist Diego Mendonça that presents works of art made with waste materials from carpentry shops

Diego Mendonça, an artist who has received numerous awards and held exhibitions in more than ten countries (such as at the UN Headquarters in New York and at the Carrousel du Louvre Musée in Paris), proposes a series of works of art with a tone of protest and a cry for sustainability.

The collection refers to the waste of materials in carpentry shops in the micro-region of São João del-Rei - MG, where the great productive expansion resulted in the enormous disposal of materials inappropriately in the region.

The works are the result of the artist's master's research, which is part of the Interdepartmental Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Art, Urbanities and Sustainability (PIPAUS), at the Federal University of São João del-Rei (UFSJ).

For the guiding professor Dr. Mateus Martins (DAUAP-PIPAUS-UFSJ), “materials called ‘rejects’ from carpentry shops, a different look and works of art that arise as challenges. They are free and new contemporary objects are born. Refuse is transformed into art, it gains colors and functions. The thematic relevance of the exhibition is justified by the nature of artistic work and reveals the transformation of materials that would otherwise be discarded in the environment, often in inappropriate ways. Diego Mendonça's artistic production process appears to be complete, they are organized appropriations and products of academic challenges that seek the importance of making connections with the community. It shows the possibilities of using materials and transforming them into arts, into making, as well as sources of income. A transformation, therefore a challenge. Well, they are appropriations of what was forgotten in some corner, fragmented, seeking to rescue the also collective memory of the object and the place, constructed with affection and that become everyone's.”

In painting, his great legacy, Diego is a disciple of Yara Tupynambá, who has her studio in Belo Horizonte, where Diego goes every month to delve into the artist's source of knowledge.

I was born in Rafaela, a quiet town in the interior of Argentina. A typical small Latin American town, where the peasant culture dialogues with the modernity of the local industries. Son of photographer parents, my life has passed through the world of cinema and television, advertising, marketing and finally, Art. The experiences of my life journey in South America and Europe were very important for my artistic communication. My works establish a fluid dialogue between classical photography and modern algorithmic creation techniques. I am an artist always influenced by the daily happenings of societies. In BELA 2023 I try to show this: the reality of this moment in Europe and Latin America; and also classical photography and algorithmic digital intervention. In Helsinki I present a unique work composed of eight similar and mirrored images: The Last Train. It represents the individuality of each being who, having the sacred freedom to move freely, finds himself oppressed and limited by the political events of our time. In Pieksamak and Varkaus, I present two works that convey the silenced and unheard cry of the destruction of the Amazon. The Works will also be shown in Rio de Janeiro.

Väri on maalausteni ydin jonka avulla käsittelen asioita. Maalatessani kankaan pinnalle nousee teemoja jotka juuri silloin mietin. Milloin mietin naisten vapautumista valmiiksi valetusta vartalon vaatimuksista, milloin taas miten rasismista pääsisi eroon. Viimeisissä maalauksissani olen miettinyt leikkiä ja leikin merkitystä. Miksi leikimme?

The colours are the core of my paintings. During the painting process different themes are rising. Somethimes I think about how women can get rid of the body demands on women in the society and sometimes themes like how to get rid of the rising rasism occupy my mind. In my latest paintings I have been thinking about playing. Why do we play? Why do both children and animal babies play? My paintings became rooms for playing. Thin painting has the name secret garden.

My paintings are large and ekspressionistic, most important things are colour, feeling and atmosphere. I love nature and animals, they are my inspiration. Also people are part of nature, we all belong to same wonderful family.

Born in Limoeiro, Pernambuco, Henrique Hammler, started drawing at seven, trying to reproduce faithfully the family portraits. At 20, with the help of his friend and artist João Neto, painted his first oil on canvas. He studied architectural, industrial, mechanical and art design in the School of Arts of Recife. In 1977 he started his works in oil on canvas. Also, in the following years, dedicated himself to the research of ceramics in the town of Tracunhaém, Pernambuco. In 1985 presented his first solo exhibition, ”Flagelados da Paixão” at the Academy of Arts of Pernambuco. Thereafter, he moved to Sao Paulo to devote full time to his art.

Henrique Hammler’s Festival of Colors

* by Oscar D’Ambrosio, journalist and master in Visual Arts by the Arts Institute of UNESP and member of the International Association of Critics of Arts (AICA)

“Bright colors in warm tones are the main characteristics of the Brazilian painter H.Hammler. By taking some national themes, such as folklore, he reaches plastic results characterized by the juxtaposition of images, in sets marked by dynamism, with various themes originating from his northeastern roots.

H.Hammler was born in Limoeiro, in the State of Pernambuco, on October 9th, 1955, coming from a family with 9 siblings. He started painting at 7 and at his 20s painted a landscape that would become his first oil on canvas. From that point on, he never gave up searching for new paths and techniques until his present phase, where he represents the Brazilian popular festivals and the “cangaço” universe (the universe of the outlaws from the remote interior of Brazil) from a very special perspective.

He has been living in Rudge Ramos, a district in São Bernardo do Campo (São Paulo State), since 1989 and this is why his work presents some special elements of São Bernardo. One of them is the small houses that appear in the upper part of his canvases, colorful, with countless satellite dishes pointing at the sky. It is the artistic point of view captured by the eye of the artist in Itabuna, in Bahia State.

Astonished by the fact that those uniform houses, owned by people of low income, built with very well-defined contours are connected to the globalized world through those satellite dishes, he could solve artfully the driving force that motivated him to paint those houses.

One of the subjects which is very present in his work is the “bumba-meu-boi”, the traditional and principal character of the well-known festival in northeastern Brazil. The festival is represented with many bright colors, conveying two important feelings: dynamism and joy. The use of black is essential, since this color works as support for all the others and contributes to a balance of the picture. Another very present image is that of the ”cangaceiros”, symbols of the northeastern culture and of the bravery of a people, as well as of rebellion and search for justice. These figures usually appear as a form of homage to a person of public renown or of the painter’s personal relations. The predominance of unique elements in his paintings is a curious point. It can be in the images, rows of houses, satellite dishes, dogs, street trolleys selling the sweet “raspa raspa” (popsicles), chickens paying homage to Porto de Galinhas city, in Pernambuco; or other elements that pay homage to the artist’s own family, composed of himself, his wife, and a daughter. The challenge to join a balanced composition with the multiplicity of colors is the basis of H.Hammler’s work. Each time he succeeds in his artworks, he takes aspects from the Brazilian culture into his paintings. This is accomplished by the bright and cheerful colors, the mixture of white and black people, women in colorful dresses and, mainly, by the chromatic freedom in the props of each “bumba-meu-boi” that he takes from his imaginary to place, with renewed life, on his canvases.”

Jadyza

Was born from the need to express sensitive experiences apprehended in moments that need to be eternalized. Learning how to see began by daydreaming, admiring the altars of the baroque churches in São João del-Rei, a historic city from the gold cycle in Minas Gerais. Jadyza’s expressive language was developed at the Guignard Art School in Belo Horizonte. The pilgrim perception during road-trip on the back of a motorcycle, exchanging with other cultures and the enchantment for diverse landscapes formed her luggage. Returning to her origins after a long trip from Ushuaia to Alaska, to live alongside the Serra de São José in Tiradentes and the connection with the land, these are the stories that her works tell.

I am a painter from Helsinki (b.1960 in Lahti) and I have studied visual arts at Orivesi High School (Department of Fine Arts), at Kankaanpää Art School and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki (now University of Arts Helsinki, Academy of Fine Arts) graduating as a Master of Fine Arts in 2003.

I start my painting process with acrylic and spray paint, using the technique of action painting, which creates free abstraction and where momentariness can come to the fore. I use the wet-on-wet technique. From there, I continue with oil colours more slowly and carefully. The abstract and the figurative meet in the same picture. The themes and subjects of my works are man and humanity, as well as various references to space and popular culture. As reference material, I use images found on the internet, which I fade so that the origin of the image is beyond recognition.

Aloitin urani vuonna 1997.

Sculptor in the Wild

I started my career in 1997. My art consists of sculptures, installations and environmental art. In the core of my work are natural resources such as willow, birch bark and different plant parts. I use steel to compliment them. I get my inspiration from Finnish mythology and forestry fables. I feel most comfortable in the wilderness. Nature, to me, is like a second nationality and a second language. The environment gives me a sense of serenity that enables me to have a better understanding of time, boundaries, good and bad in the world. During my career I have participated in numerous private and public art exhibitions. My artworks can be found in the State Art Deposit Collection of Finland and the collections of The City of Helsinki and Saastamoinen Foundation.

José Antonio de Lima

When the artists of the Italian Transvanguarda rediscovered, in the late 1970s, that making art is “getting one’s hand dirty”, in the literal sense of the expression, they sent a warning signal to a young artist, who was still taking his first steps in artistic production. Be it in the manual processes of producing the work of art or in today’s electronic media, the pleasure of art lies in making, in metamorphosing, in transforming matter into form. At the time, art was going back to its internal motives, to its place par excellence, which is finding within itself the necessary energy to build images. Art is production and it entails work.

José Antonio de Lima has always enjoyed handling diverse materials, mixing, modeling, painting, sewing or sculpting, with paper and wire, with fabric, with earth and iron dust: the poetic is something that emerges from the artist’s inner silence and then, one day, these shapes that had previously moved from flatness to the three-dimensional space of sculptures and volumes, wanted to take flight. From pencil sketches, drawings, totems, cocoons emerged the cathedrals and the tramas (wefts) – “from the cocoon to the butterfly”, says the artist – but it is always the artist’s intervention on matter, the chrysalis that emerges thanks to the transformation of living matter, such as the larva or even inert material, that takes flight into space: living silence in monumental scale.

In this book we have the synthesis of a trajectory that began in the 1980s and is now in its full artistic maturity. All his pursuits, tries, and paths followed show that it is the quest and hard work that make the artist; the love of details, of collecting the slightest sensations and the smallest thoughts in the desire to remain open to change and experiences.

Drawing has followed José Antonio since he was thirteen, when he decided he wanted to be an artist; from drawing he went on to painting and sculpture. The “totems”, the “tools and weapons”, more than bringing back clear memories of his childhood, are also studies of space; they are drawings and paintings that escaped from flatness, which has never been present in his work. Mario de Andrade stated that what he liked about drawing, in its very complex nature, “is its infinitely subtle character of being at the same time transient and filled with wisdom”. (Mario de Andrade, “Do desenho”). Drawing is a dream that comes true and the beginning of all artistic musing: it is the start of artistic action, according to those who introduced our concept of art, in the past. For Giorgio Vasari, we should celebrate the fact that the artist received from heaven the ability to, without any difficulty, reveal things alive and true. (Giorgio Vasari, Le Vite, v. 1, XV).

The “cocoons” belong to an intermediary phase; they seem to be waiting for the artist to mold the shapeless material and from it to pull out the “being from the not being”. The “cathedrals” are direct consequences of his formal research, which consolidated into the “tramas” (wefts), whose ephemeral material demands permanence. It is memory that becomes metal: in the beginning there was flatness, which took flight without turning its back on its beginnings. The metamorphoses show that everything can be changed into everything in the direction of an “aspacial” center and of the atemporal – maybe of the invariable, too – but in his work, José Antonio shows that everything is temporal and we can only perceive things through the mediation of space and time.

But he always goes back to painting; it becomes the field inside which the handmade and the concept finally find their balance, the experimentation field where all the other experiences can be applied as pictorial substance and mental power, a place where his most subtle and impalpable motives can be translated into image.

In order to respond to poetical work, we must always resort to a poet: “Painting, from then on, is ‘unpainting’/ fusing shape into darkness (into paste, into mud) / merging the whites/the greens and blues / into the dirty matter without light /and then, from the inside out / the painter reaches the end / that is, the beginning / from the dark paste (from the painted background) / reemerges the figure.” (Ferreira Gullar, Figura-fundo, 2013).

The poet always makes up something to say, but only by saying it does he find the meaning of what he has said.

Talvez em alguns aspectos todas as coisas sejam as mesma coisas: pintura, utensílio, escultura, madeira, tecido, volume, plano, sagrado, profano, lúdico, alimento, alma e beleza...

Series ESTILHAS ( Fragments )

Taken by a Nietzchean reflexion that the first sculptures made by humans were domestic utensils, I´m prompted to make some considerations about the sculptur albric-a-bac proposed by the artist Joseph Figorelle. Joseph Figorelle´s sculpture´s articulable peaces are similar – concerning the ludic aspects – to the crittersof the modern artist Lygia Clark. Getting involved with this beautiful proposed aesthetic, expectators might assemble and disassemble emotions, play, rave, make believe and be fostered by the most palatable and necessary thing, namely, Art. Presenting this sculptural collection, Joseph Figorelle, gives us a precious tip for a reflexion over the mosaicbuilding. Perhaps in some aspects, all the things are the same ones“ painting, utensil, sculpture, wood, fabric, volume, plan, sacred, profane, ludic, food, soul and beauty.

J.Dalcastagné

J. Dalcastagné is an artist who explores sensations and experiences from everyday life. Her works generate involuntary thoughts, often followed by automatic reactions. Feelings of depreciation, rejection, and evil, which are often uncontrollable, may arise. If noticed by the viewer, these feelings can be shaped so that attitudes do not reveal the truth of these uncontrollable feelings. In contrast to the attitudes taken, these involuntary feelings are the primary themes explored in the artist’s pieces.

From this point of view, opposites are intertwined in the artist’s pieces, creating the “ugly but beautiful.” When vibrant colors interact with dark colors, it creates a “friendly aggressiveness.” The lines used to contour the objects also contribute significantly to this aesthetic. They bring an aggressive look while giving a raw, childish feel to her pieces, displaying an aesthetic close to that of book illustration.

Taide on tapani toimia yhteiskunnassa. Työskentelyssäni käsittelen mm. elämän haurautta, sattuman/kohtalon voiman ja luonnon elementtien haavoittuvuutta. Päämateriaalini on keramiikka.

I find the inspiration for working from daily life and news itsems which get lodged in my mind. Art for me is one way of taking part in social and political discussion.

The overarching theme of my practice has involved the elements of earth, air, blood and water. Later vegetation has emerged in the theme as the fifth element. The concept of elements arises from concern for ecology and ethics. All these elements share a common root. Inseparable from nature, they are intricately connected with and nourish each other. However, blood seems to me the one element that threatens the natural balance between the others.

Série “NO ESCURINHO DO CINEMA”

O papel sempre obteve meu olhar. Cumpre o momento do filme. Resgatei estes cartazes apresentados.

E poetizar.

“IN THE CINEMA’S DARKNESS” series

Paper has always held my eye. With him I experiment in the world. When advertising is printed on it, information that is obsolete in itself, my first feeling is not to allow it to become rubbish, so beautiful are the colors, smells, sparkles! The movie poster, source of enchantment, stealthily disappears, without a trace, as soon as the season ends. Fulfills the moment of the film. I rescued these presented posters. This rescue started a long period of whole and long days of deep and fine observation of what I had in front of me. Before I found myself, I knew almost every detail of each poster. This is a period of uncertainties, constructions, clash of lines, spaces and textures, dismantling / building again / anguish returns, and my search for landscapes, characters from my aesthetic repertoire continues, through a lot of reflection, a lot of hands dancing on a surface full of colors and appeals, listening to the music that lines, planes, spaces, textures suggest for the construction of a new reality that penetrates and contains the poster. The poster does not disappear: it composes and guides. It is a delicate and silent process. We have to respect what is built and incorporate/hide/suggest/create infinite possibilities within this existing space. And poetize.

My embroidered works are thoughts and occasional moments woven in the air. In all that I make, colour, material, touch and motion are essential. My embroidered works are born in a process, where I program my idea into the digital embroidery machine. When embroidering, I rethink the design by making many, many color changes, adding materials and skipping parts of the design. This is how I combine boring static digital embroidery with unique craft. I like to use surplus materials and materials I have discovered by chance. I hope my embroidered thoughts bring comfort, encouragement and joy into people's lives.

Joy to life

I am an artist living in Espoo, on the coast of Finland. I paint nature, people and events with oil on canvas. My themes may vary, but they are united by humor and similar color tones. In my opinion, the cheerfulness and lightness of life can be perfectly emphasized by bringing unusual elements to ordinary situations. With my works, I try to encourage the viewers to return to their own good memories and experiences. Every memory, encounter or landscape is of course very personal, and it contains feelings and memory traces that can be difficult to put into words. Often, through humor and joy, the message and the surface of identification come to the fore.

Marcus Frade was born in 1970 in Rio de Janeiro, where he currently lives and works. He has a degree in Product Design from the Escola de Belas Artes, UFRJ, and a postgraduate degree in 3D art for digital games from Faculdade CCAA.

He possesses a body of work with a strong personality, organic language and permeated by vibrant colors. When seeking to transcend his art to the sensorial realm, he employs several modeling techniques to achieve the effect of high relief. His creative process is dynamic and encompasses an array of techniques, interconnecting concept, design and practice.

His abstract art does not represent objects belonging to our external concrete reality. He blends colors, lines and surfaces to compose his own reality within his artwork. He draws inspiration from his instincts, unconscious and intuition, basing his art on lyrical or expressive abstractionism to create an imaginary art connected to an inner need influenced by expressionism.

Marcus plays with organic forms and applies vibrant colors within contour lines to bring out the non-figurative aspect of the artwork. His work may occasionally depart from abstraction and venture into the figurative realm during moments of ludicity, raising questions of humanitarian critique without losing the essence of his art.

She uses the assumptions of Photography and the critical bias of Sociology to think about the themes of his painting. Training in both languages exert great influence on the artist's creative process, where she walks through human behaviors, beliefs and feelings.

“Anthropomorphic” is the work composed of a series of paintings developed by the artist from Rio de Janeiro, Marí Soares, in which the images are articulated under the paradox of human irrationality – rational animality.

The animal personification revealed in the paintings suggests the rescue of harmony, lightness, the sensitive, so present in the animal world and, on the other hand, so lost among us, in a broken and brutalized society.

In this sense, the images serve as a metaphor for a world that is not always possible and visible and invites us to question how far we can be rational.

Despite his relatively recent appearance on the Rio de Janeiro art scene, artist Marcelo Galvão moves with ease between painting and sculpture, addressing a varied range of themes - from pure lyricism to sharp social criticismthrough compositions that are characterized by the use of geometric forms as a structural element. On his canvases, the competent use of color softens the rigidity of the straight lines, giving the artist's works great vivacity without compromising their pictorial harmony; in his sculptures, on the other hand, monochromatic tones prevail. Through these characteristics, Galvão's works establish notable dialogues - without falling, however, into pastiche - with various aesthetic movements of the past century (notably Suprematism and Neo-Concretism) and with works by established artists such as Helio Oiticica's Metaesquemas and some of the compositions by Aloísio Carvão.

-Miksi maalaat yhä Marikka, mikä on olennaista?

-Why are you painting Marikka? What is essential? And I answer: the handprint. My hand paints time, space and viewpoint of my own. If I work carefully and uncompromisingly I am able to offer something genuine to nonverbal conversation, to bring out my spiritual struggle via a material product.

-What do I want to say? Perhaps, that all of us are bound to matter -to exist for a moment as unique beings. This phenomenon called life in which free-flowing consciousness is bound to vulnerable organic matter is astonishing. Isn't painting an allegory to that?

Marina Costa

I’m Marina Costa. I was born in Criciúma Santa Catarina, Brazil. I started in art in 2016 when I went through a psychologically difficult time, at that moment I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and was admitted to a psychiatric clinic. There, with the help of psychologists and psychiatrists, I started painting as a therapy and never stopped it. Art was not only a savior for me in relation to my troubled thoughts, but as a professional achievement. Until then, I had gone through 3 colleges, including medicine, but I always had the soul of an artist. I am very sensitive. I am cancer sign. Soon, I found in painting a path that I would really like to follow. My art is very much linked to fashion. I paint contemporary dolls, with big eyes, big lips, with vitality of color, visual multilingualism and brushstrokes full of emotion. Art helped me find my emotional balance and it is through art that I express my feelings. Since 2016, I’ve done some exhibitions in the state of Santa Catarina and São Paulo, interviews on radios, televisions and newspapers, essays and public notices with my works, magazine reports, ect. I also took some painting courses, but I am always keen to perfect my work in a self-taught way. I attack my canvases with strokes and brushstrokes. I don’t delete it, I let it flow. And so, I realize myself in my world, making art come to life.

Mario Marques

Mario Schuster was born in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He spent his childhood in contact with nature and observing the behavior of animals. He graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the Federal University of Pelotas - UFPel the same university where he entered the Visual Arts Bachelor, graduating in Painting. Currently, Mario works on his studio Laguna Atelier & Art Space, located at Pelotas's Laranjal beach, where he promotes exhibitions, debates on art, and art residency. "The sensitivity of looking beyond what is given to us, decoded, is revealed in his paintings where the reality of the contemporary world appears in a subtle but dramatic way, to address sensitive themes such as violence, racism, social injustice or feelings like urban loneliness and human relationships in volatile times. These everyday facts, immersed in the melancholy that populates the slow passage of time in the domestic space or in the whirlwind of news and images that bombard us daily, could become invisible. However, in a fraction of a second, the artist's question about the meaning of these events establishes a way of (re)signifying them with the art making that enhances the ways of seeing and thinking about it, of (re)signifying the real, through art."

Kevään valoa Keväinen päivä meren äärellä. Kuljen rantatietä ja aistin meren tuoman tyyneyden. Pehmeä valo heijastuu veteen. Meri liplattaa ja soittaa musiikkia. Maalaushetki on keskittymisen aikaa.

Spring light A spring day by the sea. I walk along the boardwalk and feel the calmness of the sea. The soft light is reflected in the water. The sea is lapping and playing music. The moment of painting is a time of concentration. It takes you to the other side of everyday life to a moment of unconscious creation. You can't always explain the work yourself, the pleasure and joy of making with all the senses is close to the heart.

I am an inquisitive visual artist that questions conventional truths. My interests involve human behavior and inequality as well as animal ethics. I approach these and other topics with an empathic and investigative attitude, using a wide range of artistic techniques; such as painting, photograph, installation, monotype and drawing. In my works I use symbolism. Often, my work is inspired by everyday observations recorded in handwritten notes.

The infinite universe imagination dweells in me. I'm Monica Toniato Borges, visual artist.

Actually, I find in abstraction a language that is almost descriptive. The beginning of everything lies in a drawing. It can be either coal or indian ink. The marks made demand an answer, in a dialog. It can be putty, pigment or water, watercolor or acrylic. As long as They establish and re-establish the Harmony. And Always tell a story.

I was not born a painter, nor I was raised as one. But then the pandemic came, a watershed moment in life. And so painting became a therapeutic medium to vent my anguish and cleanse my days from the burden of confinement. It became an attempt to imprison my disquiet on a canvas, even though I knew it was like trying to grasp at rays of sunlight. Eventually, painting became something else. It became the expression of my emotional growth. Growth which came to me through personal experience; from becoming a father to being owner of a bar in Berlin, a privileged position from which to observe humankind. My study and readings have led me to the conclusion, to quote Füssli, that "art is the product of a depraved culture, in which knowledge itself is the real foundation of seeing”. My subjects are born from suffering, from addictions and from the misery of humanity. From the corruptibility of the flesh and the glacification of the soul. They are children of my spleen. Misfits in a world that has lost any connection to the sacred, to divinity, intimacy, infinity, solemnity, or to the sublime. A world in which the obsession with the results has led to the death of the soul.

Work on canvas with acrylic and on paper with watercolor, and mixing techniques is also part of creating. The feminine world and especially the period are my greatest inspiration. I created a stereotype of elongated women where I call them “my beauties”, exotic, modern and retro mixtures. Inspired by the 15th century, with clothes, hairstyles and period jewelry, bringing a unique style, a mixture of periods and styles that I paint in acrylic. In watercolor, I create female faces, modern and realistic in the vast majority, always colored with an intense look. When I create, I enter my inner world and I want to convey my personal vision, taking my imagination to the brush, letting myself be carried away. The ideas are endless and we are the connection.

Ehkäpä siksi moni veistokseni on saanut siivet selkäänsä. Tällä hetkellä savi kiehtoo minua kovasti ja siksi teen keramiikkaveistoksia. Maalauksessa käytän monipuolisesti värejä. Akryyli- ja öljyväri näyttelevät pääosaa. Veistoksiini olen yhdistellyt mm. vanhoja valokuvia ja lasia. Pitsinen pinta antaa raskaimmallekin veistokselle sipauksen keveyttä.

Some forty years elapsed for me working as a primary school teacher. Thus, a significant number of my creative moments were shared with children and teen-agers. Alongside my work, I travelled on art trips, painted, and, in particular in the last years, immersed myself in the art of sculpture. My bronze and ceramic sculptures, as well as my paintings, have featured in a number of joined exhibitions at home and abroad. I have also held solo exhibitions both in Finland and abroad. In addition, I was active in art societies for about a decade – as a member, secretary and finally chair for two years. I have been a full-time artist for the last ten years, and am a member of the Artists’ Associations of both Tampere and Jyväskylä in Finland. My art work is inspired by the home, nature, people, and animals. In my paintings, oil and acrylic paints play the key role, and I like to use colours in plentiful ways. My sculptures, on the other hand, bring about stories. For an artist, time flies. Perhaps that is also why many of my statuettes have acquired wings. Currently, I am very much fascinated by clay and have, therefore, focused especially on ceramic sculpting. In my statuettes, I have merged, for example, old photographs and glass. A lacy surface gives a light touch even to the heaviest of sculptures.

I am a visual artist from São Paulo and I have been working with contemporary sculptural art since 1996. My work is distinguished by the use of mixed techniques that include oil painting, gouache, watercolor, collages, recyclable materials, the use of gold, silver and other precious stones and for a search for different textures, giving my works an element of threedimensionality that can be appreciated both up close and from afar. Up close, the different textures in different levels and formats convey to the viewer the feeling of organic warmth. From afar, sinuous lines in relief are like harmonious bodies in motion. My paintings and sculptures instill a sense of curiosity and reflection, giving the viewer the freedom to create images and meanings for my works, making them delve into the colors, the objects used and into a world of shapes and textures. I like to provoke the viewer by creating harmonious worlds in which nothing is what it appears to be at first sight, as an invitation to delve deeper into my canvases and sculptures, and to navigate them with an open mind and heart.

“Your works are like an orchestra, all the instruments tuned and delicate and you are the conductor”.

Petra Kollmannsberger

www.petra-kollmannsberger.com

Instagram: @petra_kollmannsberger

"Thinking about Petra Kollmannsberger's creative universe forces us to try to understand a complex system of references. In which many aspects of European culture and the Panamanian and Latin American world with its richness of colors and textures are interwoven. Born in Bavaria, she had a traditional education in German Catholic schools, then began her higher education. Not satisfied with the course her life has taken, she makes big changes, leaving a safe and seemingly monotonous life, to venture to live in Latin America, that is how she arrives in Panama, where she will start a life full of experiences.

Petra Kollmannsberger is an artist in a permanent search for essence. When we are in front of one of her works we have the feeling that the artist seeks to express the reality of the subject and its environment, a reality that moves away from the guidelines set by social networks, where they want to show beauty and success. In her work she seeks to know and represent the subject, not from a photographic vision, but from the identity of the person and the relationship with their own environment, many of her works show us characters far from perfection; bizarre in their image and attitude, in situations of defiance, fear or disrespect. Many times she has interacted with the individuals we see represented, showing the reality that their lives are not perfect and that their environment is hostile. Kollmannsberger shows us that we must forget about trying to control the image and go into the search for the essence.“

Teen kuvataidetta monipuolisesti. Tänä vuonna olen halunnut tarkastella työskentelyäni laajemmin ja palata alkuun, jolloin käytin materiaalina kiveä ja pastaa. Piirrän, maalaan, teen veistoksia ja rakennan installaatioita. Teoksissani hyödynnän myös kierrätysmateriaalia. Inspiroidun luonnosta, ihmisistä ja ihmismielestä.

I work in many different ways. This Year I wanted to consider my working habit wider and return to the beginning. At that time I used as material stone and pasta. I draw, paint, sculptor and make istallations. In my works of art I like to use recycled materials. I get inspired of nature, people and human mind.

From love to color. I paint my current moods with colors. I paint the work like an abstraction, but I structure it as a landscape. I participate in BELA with fresh spring paintings. After a darker color season, it also represent a new beginning.

Suomen luonto, voimalla vaihtuvat vuodenajat.

Muuttumaan pohjoisen taivaan hehkuksi.

I love Finland’s nature, rich manifestations of the seasons. I love silence of the snow landscape, explosive force of the spring time, light of the summer nights, storm of the autumn colors.

I find forms challenging, and have created three dimensional mixed media art works. Starting from the collage and progressing to relief structures. Pittoscultura, picture sculpture. In these works I try to find balance between plastical form and painting. Since 2000 I have worked as a visual artist. Solo exhibitions in Finland, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and the USA. In Finland most of my exhibitions have been in galleries in Helsinki. Participations in international collective exhibitions and art fairs in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Colombia, England, Finland, France, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malta, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.

Olen porilainen kuvataiteilija.

I am a visual artist from the town of Pori. In addition being a member of our local society of artists, I am also a member of the Artists' Association MUU, Ornamo Art and Design in Finland, The Finnish Association of Textile Artists TEXO and Finnish Glass Artists LASITA.

My work is in many mediums, but currently I am focusing on photographic pieces that are edited and manipulated. My most recent public works are glass installations in the floor of a school in Pori. They were created together with pupils at the school and the Children’s Cultural Centre Kruununpää. They are great round disks of glass that have been imbedded flush with the surface of the floor. Three large photographic works of mine were developed, printed and rendered in glass, along with a video installation, in the surgical ward at the county hospital in Satakunta in conjunction with renovations at the hospital.

I have collaborated with gallerist Rosa DiDonna, and my work has been on exhibition on numerous occations in southern Italy.

In my work I try to shape the things I see into impressions that are meaningful to me. I photograph a lot; the subjects are often plants and landscapes with a painterly mood. I print my edited photos on glass, wood or Plexiglass, occasionally on canvas or fabric as well.

Olen Pellossa, Lapissa syntynyt, nykyisin Hyvinkäällä asuva kuvataiteilija.

I’m a visual artist, born in Pello, Lapland, nowadays I live at Hyvinkää. Drawing and enviromental art are the forms of expression I enjoy the most. I draw as series, latest series is called; ”So the Forest Answers”. I am very interested about the time after humans have gone to extinction, what would life be like in pure nature. I’ve also organized summer exhibitions at Pello, ARTakatie, in which I have invited Finnish contemporary artists. Also I have been part of organizing enviromental art exhibition; Palas Art Path at Hyvinkää.

Meeting point and tension are both compatible with the artist's solitary and reflective attitude. His works have the dimension of the feeling that the colors express, sometimes gray, opaque and indeterminate, clear signs of oppression and anguish, sometimes the lyrical sense is reinforced by the use of red, black, yellow, blue, in short, joy and the affectionate presence of amorozity, highlighting what the symbolic content can rescue from reality.

With an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts, I started my career as a sculptor encouraged by the passion of creating art in its three-dimensionality, in direct contact with different materials and supports. Later came painting, drawing and collages that came to complete this trajectory which fascinates me through colors, shapes and lines. Every expression reflects in motion, to what we are connected by every beauty in its individuality. I believe in art in the sense of transcending the material reaching the spiritual, without parameters and prejudices, surpassing any and all artistic standards. For me creativity is freedom of thought and soul, connection of what we create and wish to pass through the evolutionary process.

The painterliness of my works, the dialogue of colors and the richness of light and shadow are connected with nature, emotions and my inner world. Nature is a place where I relax and move around, it is also where I draw the subjects of my future works, I capture them in my inner world, from where I draw them and paint them into images visible through my own filters.

I use oil colors and oil pastel colors, their richness of tones allows me to find the right nuances for my works. My works are becoming more reduced and abstract, they are self-portraits.

Silvio Ferraz

Silvio Ferraz and his unprecedented works in turned wood

The wooden works of art created by Brazilian engineer Silvio Luz Ferraz are environmentally sustainable. The unique pieces, with different designs, are made with pruning or demolition wood, especially those considered to be damaged by time and termites. The works are magnificent hollow objects, bowls, pots, spheres, amphoras, drops, urns, bottles, giant chess pieces, vats, sculptures and others. “In 2014, after fishing in Vancouver (Canada) -I love fishing! -I spent a week in Chicago (USA),in order to learn about the architecture and history of the reconstruction of that city that burned twice at the end of the 19th century. I got to know the architectural revolution started by Frank Lloyd Wright. I saw some wooden turned pieces influenced by this great architect and the New Bauhaus and I thought I'M GOING TO BUY A LATHE! There is no manufacture of lathes for wood in Brazil. No tools. So, I bought a lathe from the sixties, imported five American tools from Thompson, and on 9/7/2016 I made my first piece. With no training, I learned some of the techniques by relying on my instinct. Lots of compliments gave me the impetus to use all of the weekends to work on new pieces. A few months later, a great writer, poet, journalist and art critic, master Rogério Zola Santiago, saw some of my pieces, loved them, interviewed me and published an article in EXCLUSIVE magazine. That's how my weekend hobby became my Art. Today, my collection has more than 450 pieces.”

Hedbergillä on teoksia mm. Valtion taidekokoelmassa Ulkoministeriössä, Turun kaupungin ja Rovaniemen kaupungin taidekokoelmissa.

“Landscapes, colors and natural elements often provoke strong feelings in me. When painting, I want to connect these feelings with mental landscapes that summarize the observations about the experience of being. My aim is to paint something that is timeless and common to everyone.”

Turku-based Sini-Meri Hedberg is known for her pastel color landscape paintings inspired by the northern sky, abstract expressionism and German Romantic landscape paintings from the 19th century. In 2004, Hedberg graduated from the Turku Art Academy and also had her debut exhibition at the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum’s Studio. Hedberg has had about thirty solo exhibitions and taken part in various juried joint exhibitions. Hedberg is a member of the Finnish Painters’ Union and the Turku and Lapland Artists’ Associations. The artist’s works are included in the Finnish state art collection and the collections of the City of Turku and the City of Rovaniemi.

Maalaamisesta

Painting

As long as I can remember painting pictures has been important to me. Ever since I was a small child I liked to express my feelings by drawing and painting and it seems to continue as long as I live. I have always been interested in learning different painting techniques. Chinese brush painting is propably one the the most challenging one. I had a chance to learn it in Singapopore and New York where I lived with my husband who was working in those places. Working with local artists I made many good friends and living abroad was easy when knowing that we understood each others as painters. All those years I have painted in differet techniques. I have liked very much to paint visual art, though it is nice to try abstract art as well. In painting it is a question about what you see and how you show it. It is very important to belong to different art organisations and to work with people who understand what you do.

Olen Oulussa asuva ja työskentelevä independent artist. Liikkuma-alani ulottuu performanssista digitaaliseen kuvatyöstämiseen. Taiteilijuuteen vie prosessi.

Sonja Soller, born 1976 in Munich, Germany, has been working as a freelance artist since 2010. After studying design and art, the artist specialized in abstract and gurative acrylic mixing techniques. Emotionality and depth, usually expressed in many layers on top of each other, give your paintings their very own expression. The artist expresses both the highs and the lows of human existence in her very own way, always in search of the deeper meaning, for the big picture. Sonja Soller's artistic expressiveness ows onto the canvas with an irrepressible audacity, ready to catalyze the mind on a whole of great impact. The artist has concentrated on acrylic mixing techniques, until she reaches a remarkable level of mastery, and distinguishable from her rst glance.

The "Woman With a View" which seems to look in the wideness of a romantic dreamworld seems to be disturbed somehow. The viewer of the painting may start to think that something in this painting is in disorder. The surrounding, the nature, where the woman is standing seems to be disturbed. Cracks are breaking her face and it`s not clear, if it`s summer or winter, cause there are owers aswell as snow. What does the woman dream of? Why is her surrounding not seeming to give sustainability? We might start to think about a romantic view of former times, which is not there anymore, cause the godgiven sustainability is shaking as our climate, our believes and our prosperity are ckling.

Olen syntynyt 1957 ja koulutukseltani fyysikko. Olen kuvannut 16-vuotiaasta asti. Näyttelyn kolme kuvaa on vedostettu taidepaperille.

I was born in 1957 and I am a physicist by training. I have been shooting since I was 16 years old. This is my third joint exhibition. In the past, my pictures have been exhibited in joint exhibitions organized by Ava gallery in New York and Tokyo. I have had three solo exhibitions in the last couple of years. In my opinion, the photo is only ready when it is printed on paper. I always want to finalize my work myself, and that's why I print my pictures myself. The three pictures in the exhibition are printed on art paper. I don't really limit my shooting targets in advance, but shooting is not random. Even early on, minimalism attracted me a lot, even if I didn't know how to put it into words at the time. Minimalism best characterizes my relationship with both filming and finished photos. I've always had a passionate relationship with grayscale photos. Recently, colors have also appeared in my pictures. I photographed the three works on display in this exhibition in color, after which I made grayscale versions of them. Finally, I tinted the images with three different shades of blue.

Ten years ago I founded my own memory archive. I painted small 8 x 8 cm pictures of things which have a special meaning to me as they have stayed in my mind throughout the decades. Originally I made about 80 pictures and of course their number has grown a bit.. I have worked and played with those pieces ever since- copying them, making them smaller or bigger, arranging and rearranging them. The last two picture pieces are from recent years: A silhouette of the red cardinal ( Cardinalis Cardinalis) and the rose chafer (Cetonea Aurata). My meeting with the rose chafer was somewhat similar to C.G. Jung´s meeting with it: The beetle landed on the carpet in the entrance of my home, just like it once landed on the carpet of Jung´s study in Vienna. My work 36 Memory Sticks in a Box is built with 36 picture pieces and Letters from Cetonia Aurata combines texts with images of the rose chafer.

Ulla-Maija Vaittinen

Suomen Taiteilijaseura matrikkelitaiteilija www.ulla-maijavaittinen.fi

Vaittinen on opiskellut Taideteollisessa Korkeakoulussa (nyk. Aalto Yliopisto) Vaittinen on Suomen Taiteilijaseuran ja Helsingin Taiteilijaseuran jäsen. Ulla-Maija Vaittinen asuu ja työskentelee Helsingissä.

My current works reflect on the position of children in this violent and chaotic world. Around the world abandoned swings swing away in light as well as shadow as symbols of both dark and sacred memories. These images of empty swings symbolize the lives of our children in the world of today. Will these swings ever be used again or will they remain abandoned? UllaMaija Vaittinen first exhibited at The National Youth Exhibition in 1972. Since then she has participated in several group and solo exhibitions. Her techniques vary from works in bronze, graphics, painting, installations, videos, performance and environmental works. Her most recent works have been videos and photographic collages. Russian War of Aggression against Ukraine has deeply influenced the contents of my work. Ulla-Maijas motto is: Art may not change the world, but it can impact people´s emotions and their way of thinking and arise discussion. Ulla-Maija Vaittinen has studied at Art Industrial High School of Helsinki (now a part of Aalto University of Helsinki). She has taught visual arts in many sectors since year 1979. She is a member of many Art societies. Ulla-Maija Vaittinen lives and works in Helsinki, Finland.

Maalauksiani on mm. Suomen valtion taidekokoelmissa, Turun taidemuseossa, Alkon ja Suomen Taideyhdistyksen kokoelmissa. Maalaamisessa tärkein tekijä minulle on väri. Aloitan yhdellä värillä, lisään, poistan, sekoittelen ilman tietoista aihetta. Usein maalauksen pohjalle ilmaantuu jokin luontoheijastuma, vaikka työ kulkisikin aivan eri suuntaan.

I live in Helsinki, Finland, but in summertime on an island in South Carelia. I graduated from Free Art School, Helsinki, 1989 and I am a member of the Finnish Painters Union. I have had more than twenty solo exhibitions, and I have participated in more than forty group- or shared exhibitions in Finland and abroad. I had together with my late husband, artist Tapio Lötjönen, ten exhibitions in Berlin, latest 2017. Last year I have participated in exhibitions in Finland, in Brazil, and in Japan. My works are represented in many official art collections e.g. The Finnish State Art collection, The Art Museum of Turku, Alko, Suomen Taideyhdistys. Colour is the most powerful factor for me. I begin my work with one colour, then adding more, removing some, painting without thinking first. Often some of the colours of nature are reflected in the first layers of the work. I paint oil works in my studio and aquarelles or pastels in summer, outside. Painting for me is freedom, meditation and a subconscious journey. I strive for feeling, peace and depth.

“The Transparency of Immortality”

Mixed technique painting on glass

Inspired by the culture of pre-Hispanic people, later enshrined in the work “La Catrina” (The Lady of La Muerte), by José Guadalupe Posada, the skull as a symbol of protection against negative energies, but also as a tribute to the dead, in the belief , that in the skull, all the memories were kept.

Xana Boarotto, in this exhibition, dedicates this homage to the lives of those portrayed in the painting on glass. In the light of the color contrasted with the dark skull, in a transparency between life and death, therefore the immortality of the work.

Yasemin Lümalı

My name is Yasemin Lümalı, I am a freelance artist from Türkiye. Even though a strong passion for art occupied my mind since my childhood, I did not know much about professional painters before I started to regularly study in the private studios of the famous Turkish Painters Mr. Şeref Bigalı and Mr. Yusuf Taktak.

In my childhood, I used to paint the portraits of men and women whom I had seen on black and white photographs, in an effort to create a transitional expression between realism and modernism. The same effect can be seen in my recent works.

Art for me is a kind of a mind game, a dialogue within my own conscious and emotional world. As a designer I make spontaneous touches on my artwork. This process is extremely painful, but helps me getting into this game and performing my work with a childlish enthusiasm.

The work I produced for the BELA Biennial 2023 with the theme "Transparent Loneliness" by using geometric forms in my multimedia work is full of messages: How did we all together in the days of pandemy started painfully isolating ourselves from the outside world, restricting regular human interaction mostly to virtual communications. These days were followed by a war and a devastating earthquake disaster. My work has another message: Virtual communication has been completely dominating our lives and causing social withdrawal and isolation as well as introvertedness.
