When Helapet met Pharmig November saw Helapet successfully exhibit at the Pharmaceutical Microbiology Interest Group (Pharmig) Annual Conference, one of Europe’s leading microbiologist events in Nottingham, U.K. The event attracted a great turnout, with hot topics covering cleanroom behaviour, managing bioburden strategies and approaching quality control and auditing delivered by leading field experts.

The team enjoyed showcasing Helapet’s new range of Vented Vial Adapters, supported by our exclusive Berner cytotoxic protective gloves and the renowned PharmaPack® range of sterile bulk syringes. Welcomed visitors received detailed information and advice, and one of our Tony Phelps (Sales and Marketing Manager) and popular syringe pens!

Complications of delivering IV chemotherapy Access to an intravenous route is particularly important for patients undergoing chemotherapy because of the frequency and longevity of intravenous treatment. Most chemotherapy is now delivered in the outpatient setting and it is crucial that cannulae are frequently assessed and observed to prevent and effectively manage complications (such as extravasation, occlusion, infection) should they occur. Complications are associated with significant patient morbidity and considerable cost to healthcare organisations.

In all cases, the aim of intravenous management is safe, effective delivery of treatment without discomfort or tissue damage and without compromising venous access, especially if long-term therapy is proposed. Historically, the use of infusion pumps had been frowned upon in chemotherapy clinics because of the potential risk of extravasation. However, modern technology has advanced leaps and bounds to include sensitive pressure sensors to detect early any resistance in the vein and to carefully control drug flow and concentration rates, thereby minimising the risk of tissue leakage and phlebitis.

Gaining experience in, and using, intravenous access is routine in health care but complications can still occur. As a result, much emphasis has been placed on education on preventing complications in recent years. Ongoing education in the management of these events is crucial to ensure safety is always at the forefront of care.
