• This project began as a hand drafting project introducing the concept of Aging in Place. Subsequently re-drew the family room in 3-D in Sketchup, lengthening the room and widening the doors for accessibility.

• This mid-century modern style family room was designed to showcase a sizable collection of Art pieces and hand-made furniture built by the client.

• Frequently used items such as sewing machine, television and extra bedding are close at hand but out of sight.

• Skylights make the most of natural light; cornice/ceiling lighting supplementno lamps to tip or cords to trip over.

• Sustainable bamboo flooring is easy on arthritic joints.

• Should a walker be needed, the area rug can be removed.

• Double door to the master makes for easy maneuverability to the bed and bath • Color scheme is chosen for warmth and contrast, enhancing visibility.

Concept: The Bransfords’ retirement home is to be their final home and a testament to many years of travel and artistic creation. They have requested a family room design where they can be comfortable on a single level, enjoy time with their grandchildren, and let their creative juices flow full-time.

The simplicity and warmth of a mid-century modern family room lends itself well to this end.

Lots of wood-tones and deep, warm neutrals make an ideal backdrop to Bob’s hand-made game table and chairs, live-edge coffee table and bar cabinet. The flooring is light cherrystained bamboo planks which offer warmth and cushioning for arthritic legs. The colorful area rug in front sets off the coffee table.

The contrasting woods of Bob’s furniture are repeated on the fireplace wall using dark cherry for the mantel and honey maple for the balance. The fireplace wall provides display space for books, sculptures and art. Behind the central painting is a recess for the television.

The firewood niches are just for show, as the fireplace is fited with gas logs, eliminating the need to bring in wood or clean out ashes.

The unit is flanked by built-in seating with storage for games and bedding for visits with grandchildren.

A garden window displays potted plants and herbs for cooking throughout the year. A lighted wood cornice runs the length of the east and west walls. Vertical wood blinds offer privacy.

The vintage red sofa gives the splash of color that offers contrast for weakening eyesight.

On the west wall is Elaine’s sewing armoire When open, her machine, work surfaces with task lighting and supplies are at her fingertips.

When she is done she can close the doors and it is all out of sight. The exterior of the armoire is a custom art piece.

This design addresses Bob and Elaine’s need for a comfortable and unique space where everything they need is right at hand.

Concept: • The Harpers are building their retirement home on a private lake in Tennessee.

• Clients desire to embrace universal design to the largest degree feasible without sacrificing style.

• Great room features full wall windows to make the most of natural light and the view of the lake.

• Each room which faces the lake has glass doors leading to the patio or deck.

• First floor includes master suite and a guest room which could be used for a caregiver if needed.

• Clients have traveled extensively and have requested a master bath with Japanese style bath tub sunken into the floor inside an accessible wet room.

• Glass block wall and window in master bath wet room optimizes natural light • The design includes a stylish shaftless glass elevator so that all levels will be accessible even if a wheelchair is needed at some point.

• Second floor features a library with built-in day beds which double as sleeping space for grandchildren, a bedroom, a sewing room and a full bath.

• Walk-out basement is designed for large family gatherings. It includes a party kitchen, family room, full bath, bedroom and a boat house for storage.

• Resourced ready-made models and modified models to embrace client needs • Created ceiling dome and tray using advanced features of 3DS max • Created crown and base using SWEEP command • Created bow window using multiple levels of grouping components.

• Created arched window and fireplace using Boolean feature to combine shapes • Applied and customized textures and colors for enhanced rendering • Details of the room are PNG images created in Adobe Photoshop from photographs of the items. They were then brought in and manually transformed to achieve the correct perspectives. These include the wall art, bookcase fronts, chandelier, accessories on the mantel and bookcases.

Design challenge: Room is too large to place furniture on the walls. Project is to create a cozy, conversational space that brings attention to the ceiling dome and fireplace, keeping the panoramic view of the outdoors open.

This was accomplished by creating a seating area that mirrors the ceiling dome and using a round coffee table to reflect the light from the dome and a round rug to pull it all into the center of the room.

The 1953 hillside ranch lends itself well to MCM furnishings as selected.

Due to the lack of available CAD blocks, the sofas and table in the rendering are not curved, as the design indicates.

• The Base Building Plan was drawn in Autodesk Autocad using ARRAY to create the base grid, then creating the various elements as blocks, reducing drawing time by copying, rotating and mirroring basic elements.

• The Partition Plan was created using X-REFs to overlay the base building plan. The axis was rotated to facilitate drawing the numerous oddly angled walls.

• The Furniture Floor Plan was then created by accessing provided CAD blocks and modifying them to address client requirements. Furniture components were grouped and saved as blocks to create consistency in spacing and reduce drafting time.

• The Reflected Ceiling/Lighting Plan was created using the rotated axis tool to quickly create the angled grid, • The furniture layer was accessed through X-REFs to simplify dropping in lighting blocks in the optimal locations.

• Finally, the custom reception desk was detailed in isometric views using isometric drawing mode.
