Giraffe tramples mother and child leaving both critical

Russel Meiring / ER24 HOEDSPRUIT - A mother and child were left critically injured yesterday afternoon after they were trampled by a giraffe on a farm in Hoedspruit, Limpopo.

ER24 paramedics were alerted to this incident after the Hoedspruit Medical Rescue arrived on the scene and assessed the patients. Assessments showed that a mother, believed to be in her 30s, as well as a 3-year-old boy, had sustained numerous injuries and were both in a critical condition.

The mother and child were treated for their injuries by Hoedspruit Medical Rescue and thereafter rushed to a nearby airfield where the two ER24 Oneplan Helicopters were waiting.

Further treatment and advanced life support interventions were initiated, in an effort to stabilize the patient’s vital signs. Once treated, the two patients were airlifted to Busamed Modderfontein for urgent treatment.

Calling all art lovers CAPETOWN – Hoedspruit artists Anne Watt and Sophie Niemann, have been invited to have a joint art exhibition in Cape Town, at well known Cape Gallery.

The exhibition opened on the 2 September and will run until 28 September.

Anne Watts vibrant African scenes and Sophie’s African wildlife with a mix of traditional techniques, African textiles and threadwork form a great combination.

In the moment, we may become isolated from our lifelines of logic, projection and rational thought that blur the boundary between what is happening in our minds and the reality on the ground.

And every so often, a special encounter inquires where this boundary lies, or perhaps, if it

even exists at all.

The footage does not do justice to or can succinctly portray what happened on the walk.

This was no gung-ho encounter and it took me two years to post it online. Keyboard warriors have had an open season with me, which sadly, is an inevitable human process.

somehow connected to slave trading syndicates! If I could urge you to look beyond the 2 minutes of social media footage and recognize the significance of a meaningful wondrous wilderness encounter.

That modern man still shares a kinship with the wild. That in order to maintain our own respect and dignity, we must treat our environment in the same way. Wilderness conservation therefore, should be considered as one of the greatest priorities of our time.

My message is about a transformative view of elephant awareness. And conservation in general. I believe that once you fall in love with the wonder of elephants, then you fall in love with wilderness conservation, abhorring everything that threatens our natural environment and ancient order of things. Elephant sentiency makes this inevitable. It is time to view these animals through a different lens, a lens that is essential to our own wholeness and well-being. The encounter was after all about the elephant, not me.

Haenertsburg Spring Festival MAGOEBASKLOOF / HAENERTSBURG - Celebrate spring in Magoebaskloof with two exciting events. Magoebaskloof Hotel will host the 10 day Spring Festival from 22 to 30 September, while Haenertsburg Village celebrates with a three-day Spring Market from 22 to 24 September.

There will be unique craft and food stalls, open gardens, art exhibitions, music, wine tasting and much more.

An iconic destination in Magoebaskloof are the beautiful Cheerio Gardens and Tea Garden. Visitors will be treated to varying displays of azaleas, flowering cherries, lilies, and other indigenous flowers and bushes. Moss covered walking trails meander among the flowering cherry trees. The tea

The garden will be open daily from 09:00 – 15:00 and visitors can also browse the shop and purchase some of the delicious and exotic Persian preserves and cordials. A coffee shop serves delicious treats.

Finally the Sequoia Garden Retreat is a must. This bio-diverse and picturesque paradise

which includes an azalea maze, an arboretum, the renowned Liquid Amber Avenue, the Sequoia Forest, as well as a variety of charming gardens with names like Ellen’s Gate, the Anniversary Garden and Mother’s Exit.

A limited number of picnic baskets can be ordered to make your day at Sequoia Garden Retreat even more special. There are lovely secluded and cosy picnic spots in the gardens ensuring picnic goers of their privacy. A first-hand experience ‘let’s hear it for the with Madiba small town girls!’

This was the very first photograph taken of Nelson Mandela as he was released from Victor Verster Prison after he had spent 27 years on Robben Island. This photograph by Mark Peters, is the only one signed twice by Madiba, three others exist that have been signed once.

HOEDSPRUIT – To meet Mark Peters is to get a glimpse into life on this planet, from behind the lens of the man who managed to capture the very first image of Nelson Mandela on his release from 27 years behind bars. The date was 21 February 1990 and from then on Mark and Madiba developed an intimate relationship.

The stories are endless!

Mark was born and educated in Bulawayo, in what was then Rhodesia, he began his career as a juniour news photographer and has worked both as an inhouse and freelance photographer for such publications as the Johannesburg Star from 1978, New York Times, LA Times, London Sunday Times, Chicago Tribune, and finally Newsweek Magazine – who published the famous cover of

Nelson Mandela’s triumphant walk to freedom.

During his journalism career, he experienced dozens of conflict situations, fearlessly documenting war after war, protest after protest and revolution after revolution. Often getting himself into some hairy situations. These include South Africa during the Apartheid era struggle during which he was almost “necklaced” during the 1980 Soweto student uprising, wars in Rwanda, Somalia, Mozambique, Angola and the Congo, as well as his own home, Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia). He photographed the Balkan conflict, the Gulf War, conflicts in Cambodia, Jordan, Mali and Israel, and most recently in Afghanistan.

During the course of his astounding career, Mark points to

a few moments that stand out to him. All these subjects have stories attached to them. One such moment is when he was the first person to be escorted into Nelson Mandela’s Robben Island prison cell by Madiba himself. Nelson Mandela spent many a Sunday lunch at Mark’s house in Mellville, Johannesburg. Mark travelled to the USA with Nelson Mandela and had the honour of joining him in a tickertape parade in New York. In his time in the US, he had the opportunity to meet and photograph then President George W. Bush in the Oval Office, he met Mother Theresa during one of her visits to Cape Town. He also photographed Margeret Thatcher at 10 Downing Street, and King Hussein of Jordan at his palace in Oman.

This string of achievements did not come without risk as Mark was sentenced to death by the Dogon tribe in Mali, happily his execution is yet to be carried out.

Mark recently realised how interested people are in his life stories and experiences with Nelson Mandela. He told Kruger2Canyon that ‘about eight months ago I was flying from Cape Town to Hoedspruit wearing my Mandela T-shirt and an American tourist approached me and said “where did you get that T-shirt” and I said “it is mine, I took this photo”’. ‘The American tourist started wanting to hear more about how I did that and I explained about my journey, only to find that soon fifty people in the departure lounge were actually listening to me. When we got to Hoedspruit the American tourist said “I haven’t started my safari yet, but I have already had an incredible experience”’.

The idea has been born ‘to keep the legacy of Nelson Mandela alive and entertain guests with his riveting stories’ which are a combination of Rambo and James Bond. A cocktail of the terrors of war and all the celebrities he’s met along his journey. Kruger2Canyon and Hoedspruit-info will be assisting Mark to make this happen in the Hoed. CAPETOWN - At this year’s prestigious Silwerskerm Film Fees held in Campsbay, between 22 and 25 August 2018, Hoedspruit’s own Eva du Preez won the award for ‘Best Editing in a Feature Film’ for her work on the movie ‘Kanarie/Canary’.

The movie walked away with 5 awards, including ‘Best Film’, and will be opening in Cinemas across South Africa in October this year. Eva, seen here showing off her award in front of the poster designed by her brother MJ du Preez.

In her acceptance speech she said this award is for all the ‘small town girls’.

Southern Cross Schools musical ability Ntebo Inama Gr11 and Phathu Matobele Gr10 HOEDSPRUIT - On Tuesday 21 August, a large number of Southern Cross learners boldly took part in the music eisteddfod at Hoedspruit’s Lowveld Academy.

There were solo and group performances from learners from both the prep-school and college. All performances were of a very high standard, with most being awarded gold certificates.

The judges were particularly impressed with the rhythmic beats of Southern Cross’s re-

nowned drummers. Both squads from the junior school were awarded 95%, while the senior college squad walked away

with 97%.

A big congratulations go out to all who took part in the Eisteddfod. The standard of music

at the school should make us proud and encourage us to continue growing music at Southern Cross.

Biodiversity Economy Innovation Conference

VENDA - South Africa has a long history of formal and informal initiatives linked to innovation within the biodiversity economy. The domestic and international trade in biodiverse products contributes 3 billion towards the national GDP, and by the year 2030, the sector aspires to grow this economic stream at ten percent per annum, and add an additional 110 000 new jobs.

The purpose of thew is to profile the Biodiversity Economy alongside the People and Parks Programme as an investment-ready platform and as a significant contributor to the national system of innovation, including national imperatives, such as, job creation, unemployment and inequality, which are guided by the principles of sustainable utilisation and conservation of the country’s biological indigenous resources. The conference was attended by the President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The conference brought together stakeholders from the wildlife industry, academia, traditional leadership and

government. The stakeholders deliberated on innovative ideas that promoted sustainable utilisation and conservation of the country’s biological resources.

Environmental monitor Daddy Mathaba attended the conference. Daddy said that ‘Government ministers, provincial premier and other government dignitaries were addressed the citizens about the importance of Biodiversity, material remains on archaeological sites and economic development, to mention a few’. ‘Financial assistance was requested from our honourable President to improve our economy through green initiatives. In his speech the President seems to be passionate about biodiversity conservation and he stated that our country is ranked number three worldwide for having diversity of human species and natural resources with Brazil being number one, followed by Indonesia.’

Daddy concluded by saying that it was a privilege to have attended the conference.

HOEDSPRUIT - On 1 September 2018 Hoedspruit hosted the very first annual Daniel’s Lion Heart Challenge at Blyde Adventure Camp. This event attracted young and old, the fit and the not so fit all in support of Daniel Otto, a courageous little 5 year old boy who suffers from Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, and other special needs children in the Hoedspruit area. The event consisted of 3 tailor-made obstacle courses, 400m Little Hero Race, 5km race and for the brave the 10km race where participants got a bit dirty, but in most cases: very dirty in the name of love!

The event exceeded everyone’s expectations by far, with over 400 individuals taking part and over 1000 people in total who supported the event on the day. MC for the day was the amazing motivational dynamo WarriorRic! During his 5 day visit WarriorRic visited Hoedspruit High, Southern Cross, Lowveld Academy, Laerskool Mariepskop, Laerskool Drakensig, Jahara treatment centre and the Black Mambas anti-poaching unit. Accord to WarriorRic one recurring point about Hoedspruit is how powerful our community is, a much needed aspect in society today is the sense of community and camaraderie. Everyone in Hoedspruit knows each other, they pitch in where they can and stuff just simply gets done - without a fuss, and with a whole lot of hugs!

WarrorRic feels passion is something we all have and believes it is inborn. Some of us just choose to share more of our fire than others. WarriorRic is definitely one of those people who shares his inner fire until he is convinced that as many as possible can feel it, not just witness it. The passion our community displayed moved WarriorRic so much that he has decided to visit Hoedspruit often, and continue to engage as many educators, parents, learners and generally those in need of encouragement in order to help transform society through through accountable leadership that builds character.

Although physical distance between Hoedspruit and where he lives is an obstacle he plans to overcome this, by making Hoedspruit a priority on his calendar, and even though he is not physically in Hoedspruit at times he will continue to seek out corporate investment to help offset travel, logistics and collateral that promotes Hoedspruit and its citizens through grassroots programs.

WarriorRic’s vision for Hoedspruit is PRESENCE. Nothing happens till we show up. Keep showing up, regardless of how difficult it is! Face your fears, overcome the naysayers that reside in your head, and find your purpose. If you only take home one message WarriorRic delivered it is the following: ‘I want them to know that they are great because they are grate-ful. And I want them to make their bed... like a soldier.’

NATIONWIDE - First aid for snakebite is problematic, largely because of all the myths and incorrect or outdated information that do the rounds. While sound advice is given in books like Snakes and Snakebite in Southern Af-

rica, few people have access to such publications.

In light of the above, internationally renowned herpetologist and author Johan Marais of the African Snakebite Institute put together a free App that covers the essentials of first

aid treatment for snakebite.

The advice is concise, accurate and simple to follow and understand. It also includes emergency contact numbers for snakebite incidents.

The medical treatment of snakebite is also covered and gives medical doctors quick and easy access to the published snakebite treatment protocols. These publications cover the diagnosis and treatment of snakebite including the use of antivenom.

For unwanted snakes in houses, gardens and business premises the App lists over 450 snake removers country, divided into specific areas. To search and find a snake remover in your area is very simple.

Should anyone encounter a snake and need it identified, a feature allows you to quickly submit a photograph for positive identification.

Lastly the App also has snake profiles of common snakes in Southern Africa – each profile has four colour photographs, a distribution map and a short section on a snake species to assist with identification.

Die Riepies se o/11’s het ook die afgelope week in ‘n liga teen Southern Cross gespeel.

Die seuns het die opponeerende skool vir slegs 36 lopies uitgehaal. Die Riepies wens die krieketmanne sterkte toe met die res van hul seisoen.

Jayden Meyer, Ethan Britz en Divan de Kock het Laerskool Mariepskop se naam hoog gehou tydens die Letaba proewe en al drie span gekry.

Riepies spog graag met hul grondslagfase leerders wat aan die Afrikaanse Eisteddfod deelgeneem het.

HOEDSPRUIT – Na ‘n beoordelaar, wat nie amper Hoedspruit betyds gemaak het nie, het die Riepies haar behoorlik gewys watter talent versteek in Hoedspruit is. Een-en-Dertig Riepies het aan die tweede Afrikaanse Eisteddfod deelgeneem.

Nege leerders verower diamant-, vyf dubbelgoue-, tien goue- en vier silwertoekennings. Twee Riepies ontvang goue seëls. Die beoordelaar was die gesoute Louise Lachenicht. Die kinders het aan haar lippe gehang met al haar raad en aanbevelings.

Sy was vreeslik in haar skik met ons Riepies se talent!

Die senior leerders van Laerskool Mariepskop is met goue lepels in die mond gebôre en presteer uitstekend by vanjaar se Afrikaanse Eisteddfod.

HOEDSPRUIT – On Thursday, 16 August, 60 grade R and RR learners of Drakensig Primary visited Ambrosia Citrus Farm. It was a very educational morning which the children enjoyed tremendously. The little ones each received a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice before we returned home.

Drakie Gr RR’s besoek Brandweer Lizmarie Olivier HOEDSPRUIT– Die graad RR’e en grade RR’s het op 30 Augustus die geleentheid gehad om die lugmagbasis se brandweer te besoek. Tydens die uitstappie het die kleuters die belangrikheid van die brandweer se rol in ons gemeenskap geleer. Die leerders het ook die geleentheid gekry om aan die gereedskap te vat.

Laerskool Drakensig bedank graag die brandweer beamptes wat die dag vir die leerders opwindend en opvoedkundig gemaak het. Hulle het dit baie geniet en verstaan beter

HOEDSPRUIT - African Dream Horse Safari (ADHS) recently hosted a volleyball tournament for the Hoedspruit community. The event was organised by two interns from Holland. The funds raised by

the volleyball tournament, after expenses, were all donated to their dog outreach work being done in the Sigagule Village, where assistance with sterilisations, basic medication, dog food and education

all of the best in the competition.

Canell Jackson, oud Drakie, tans verbonde aan Merensky Boogskiet Klub asook Hoërskool Merensky is een van hierdie skuts. Dit is n lewensdroom wat waar geword het. Canell het met boogskiet begin in 2014. Sy het oor die afgelope vier jaar reeds sewe keer Provinsiale Kleure verwerf en drie keer Nasionale Kleure. Baie naweke word opgeoffer om vêr afstande te ry na die byeenkomste toe.

Vroeë oggende en laat nagte op die pad. Baie sterkte met die Wêreld Kampioenskappe.

Namens Canell en haar gesin baie dankie vir al die ondersteuning en belangstelling van familie, vriende en die gemeenskap. Dit word opreg waardeer.

Volleyball tournament, a blast!

Drakensig Fighters were the proud winners of the funvolleyball tournament and Campfire Academy came a close second. Funds raised totaled R4012!

The event was a major success and everyone had a fantastic time. A total of ten teams participated with the Drakensig Fighters winning the tournament and Campfire Academy coming second.

Funds were raised through entry fees, raffle tickets, donations as well as food and drink sales. A total of R4012.00 was raised which will enable roughly 14 dogs to be sterilised. In the long run, this makes a massive difference to many unwanted dog litters and the spread of diseases.

‘We would like to give a big thank you to our interns, Lisa and Brechtje, for all their hard work to make the event a success and to the Hoedspruit Community for supporting it. We are already looking forward to the next one,’ said Shannon Thomson of ADHS.

MAGOEBASKLOOF - The innagural Magoeba MTB Race took place on the weekend of 25 August in the beautiful Magoebakloof region, just outside Haenertsburg Village. Myself and Team Dormakaba teammate, Amy Beth McDougall participated in the race. After a tough battle with the ladies from Team Galileo Risk (Theresa Ralph and Sarah Hill) Amy and I managed to win all three stages and take the overall win.

The Magoeba, 3 Day Mountain Bike Stage Race, was the first ever stage race to take place in the majestic Magoebaskloof mountains.

The event was hosted and organised by Magoebaskloof Adventures and Haenertsburg Rotary. The objective of the race is to not only give riders the chance to experience the splendour of the region but also benefit local communities through select outreach programmes.

The race format was 3 stages over 3 days, from one central venue in a clover leaf layout and riders had the option of entering either the full race with 70KM+ distances or the Trail event with shorter less challenging routes each day.

Riders were hosted at Cheerio Gardens which served as the race venue and race village.

Tented accommodation was provided for those entrants interested but there are tons of alternative accommodation options available in the region.

All meals were provided for the 3days and we were spoilt

through all 3days.

Day 2 highlights were meandering along the Broederstroom and summitting the climb at Iron Crown, the highest point in Limpopo at 2200m.

The descent down the mountain can only be described as exhilarating.

Day 3 highlights included the promise of single track for days! Day 3 was definitely the play day. And it certainly did not disappoint! We were treated to tons of single track and even rode some of the purpose built XCO course at Stanford College. Skirting Ebenezer Dam, the perfect finish to 3days of incredible mountain biking!

All in all, it was a phenomenal 3days of racing with a really great vibe. The organisation couldn’t be faulted and as far as we were concerned, the event ran perfectly well!

with the most delicious food over the 3days. With accommodation and food sorted, riders also experienced breath taking views, deep cool forests, pristine grasslands, gurgling streams and crystal clear lakes.

Our Team arrived on Thursday afternoon and we were swiftly assisted by the Rotary Members at registration and given all required information at the dinner and race briefing.

Day 1 highlights were riding through the heart of Magoebaskloof, a mountainous region known for its untouched indigenous forests which is also the second largest indigenous forest in SA. The weather was less than ideal with a light drizzle falling and thick mist which made visibility poor but that didn’t dampen the riders’ spirits. The route was definitely challenging but absolutely beautiful with a great balance of varied terrain, a theme that carried
