The design of Great Northern is of international class

Door closers must be effective but not visible. The requirements set by the hotel industry for functionality and design on its suppliers are increasing, and Kerteminde’s newly constructed Great Northern Hotel which is one of Europe’s most ambitious golf and spa hotels is no exception. GEZE has delivered 110 built-in door closers, automatic sliding doors and integrated fully- glazed automation for the impressive facility.

Great Northern in Kerteminde offers golfing experiences and sensory pleasures of an international class. The first blueprints for Great Northern were drawn up in 2011, and with the opening of the exclusive spa in 2019, the entire construction project which includes the 18-hole golf course, clubhouse, hotel and spa, is now complete.

Great Northern’s buildings reveal an aesthetic dimension featuring Nordic, stylish architecture with an international feel with hand-carved, Greek sandstones and timber from Africa. The selection of materials such as light sandstone, dark wood, warm copper and glass supports the raw and organic expression of the nature that encompasses Great Northern.

Stringent functional and design requirements

The door manufacturer Vahle A/S has supplied all of the interior doors to the buildings through E+N Arkitekter. As soon as the ink on the architect’s drawings for the doors was dry, Vahle A/S began investigating how to satisfy the requirements for functionality and design.

“In the hotel industry, doors are an increasingly important element of architecture and expression. The doors must comply with regulatory functional requirements such as fire and smoke safety, they must be soundproof and on top of this they must be stylish. Door closers and hinges must therefore be integrated into the doors, which requires our suppliers to develop very small, integrated door closers. Even a few millimetres can make a big difference,”says Bo Vejen, Sales Manager at Vahle A/S. Vahle A/S has supplied a total of 174 interior, dark-finished oak doors for the hotel, spa and clubhouse. Of these, 110 of the doors have integrated door closers from GEZE.

“GEZE’s integrated door closers are the smallest and best designed on the market, and they fit the needs of the Great Northern Hotel perfectly.

Challenging architecture All of the internal sliding doors are also fitted with GEZE automation, including the kitchen and restaurant, as well as the external and porch doors to the spa and clubhouse.

In order to maintain the stylish design, the architect specified sliding door automation, which is installed in the ceiling. GEZE is the only supplier on the market that has developed sliding door automation for integrated fully-glazed systems.

Moreover, GEZE has supplied automatic door openers with built-in personal safety for the technical room as well as for the staff entrance to the spa.

The small details matter the most GEZE has advised on and delivered a comprehensive range of its many different automation solutions for the three buildings; hotel, spa and clubhouse. All solutions are combined in a single control system and can therefore be managed in one place.

The fantastic double telescopic sliding door, completely in glass, separated the restaurant and lounge area from the reception. GEZE Door Automatic allows for full access, with the possibility of locking the doors in complete open position, when suitable.

What has GEZE delivered?



GEZE BOXER integrated door closers with sliding rails on 110 internal doors. Integrated door closers are used for concealed installation in door leafs and frames and have sliding rail systems for single and double doors.

The bespoke gear and spindle of the BOXER ensure minimal opening resistance.



GEZE POWERTURN automatic door openers and safety sensors on external hinged doors. This door opener can also handle large, heavy doors, with one or two leafs, without any problems and integrates with its discreet design and just seven centimeters high in each installation scenario.

GEZE IGG integrated fully-glazed system on outside porch. This frameless fully-glazed system is built like thermoglass, but where all profiles, fittings, hinges, mortise locks, etc. are concealed between the glazed surfaces.



GEZE SLIMDRIVE sliding door automation on glazed doors. This automatic sliding door system is ideally suited for glass façades where large door leafs are to be moved and all components must appear sleek and well presented. With its modest construction height of just seven centimeters, the SLIMDRIVE can be integrated almost invisibly into the façade and can be used for doors weighing up to 125 kg.
