Are We Doing List Building

All Wrong?

For 25 years the online marketing advice has been, “Create an awesome freebie and a landing page, give away the freebie in exchange for an email address, nurture those leads through an autoresponder, and eventually you can sell stuff to those subscribers.”

This works. It’s worked for over 25 years. But I’m starting to think it simply does not work as well as it used to.

Consider this:

68% of consumers are more likely to purchase from a brand they’ve already bought from (HubSpot).

In the past year I’ve started two new email lists.

One is just like the description above. I created a bang-up hair-on-fire freebie and promoted it like crazy.

Requests poured in. The list grew like gangbusters. I was thrilled.

I also created a $12 product with tons of value to it. And I promoted that on social media and I sold quite a lot of copies.

In both cases I paid for advertising as well as getting organic traffic.

Which, if you’re paying attention, you realize that it COST ME to give away the freebie. I broke even on the paid product.

My list of people who got the freebie is about 22 times bigger than my list of buyers. That’s right, 22 TIMES BIGGER!

Which, by the way, is a meaningless statistic.

You could have a list of every single person on the planet and unless they’re buying stuff, it just does not matter. (Assuming your goal is to make money.)

Now here’s what does matter: I’ve made far more money with my small paid list than I have with my big freebie list.

I don’t want to say how much money, but it is substantial and wonderful and I am very, very happy with the results.

The key? I created that $12 product as a stand-alone product AND as an introduction to a $499 product. That is, someone who purchases the $12 product gets exactly what is promised and more. They are happy. And maybe it’s all they need.

But if they want more, they have the option of getting the $499 product. And a shocking-surprising-gratifying-exuberant number of them do.

My freebie list? Sure, I’ve made some sales, but it’s nothing to brag about.

I can’t say I’m ready to completely ditch the freebie list building method just yet, but I am ready to try more of the low-priced entry product form of list building and see if I can’t continue to replicate my results.

Reddit Aims for 2024 IPO at $15B Valuation

I love Reddit, but what are they thinking??

Business Insider reported that Reddit’s looking to launch its long-awaited IPO in 2024, at a target valuation of $15 billion.

To put that into context, X, which has 250 million daily users (versus Reddit’s 70 million DAU) and will bring in over $2 billion in ad revenue in 2023 (versus Reddit’s $800 million) is currently valued at $19 billion.

Snapchat, with 406 million DAU, more than 5x Reddit’s user base, is valued at $27 billion.

Based on the comparisons at hand, there’s seemingly not much logic to Reddit’s valuation target. But then again, maybe it is just that; an ambitious target, and Reddit will eventually have to settle at a lower price.

Are You One Moment Away from Serendipitous Success?

Today I heard one single sentence in an 80-minute video that has given me the idea for what might be a million-dollar app in a brand new industry.

Every single day we are exposed to new thoughts, concepts, and ideas that we can potentially turn into a fortune.

The key is opening not just our eyes and ears, but also your minds, and then taking action.

For your inspiration, here are a few examples of people either being in the right place at the right time, or simply getting a tiny bit of information that they transformed into entire businesses:

• In 1998, two Stanford students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, happened to attend a lecture on search engines. Inspired, they began working on a side projectthat would eventually become Google, revolutionizing the way we access information.

• In 1995, Rick Caruso overheard a conversation about a struggling mall. With his real estate expertise, he transformed the property into The Grove, a thriving outdoor shopping and entertainment destination.

• In 2012, Spencer Fry rescued a dog and posted a "dog selfie" online. The image went viral, leading to a successful photography career and even a book deal.

• In 2007, Whitney Wolfe Herd attended a networking event with a spare ticket. She met her future co-founder, and together they created Bumble, a popular dating app.

• In 2011, Blake Mycoskie was stuck in an elevator with a stranger who told him about the need for shoes in Argentina. This sparked the idea for TOMS, a company that donates a pair of shoes for every pair purchased.

• In 2000, Mary Barra, then a young engineer at General Motors, noticed a problem with a car's ignition system. Her persistence in raising the issue led to significant safety improvements and ultimately paved her way to becoming CEO.

• In 2008, Mark Cuban stumbled upon a delicious Cuban sandwich at a Dallas food truck. Impressed, he invested in the fledgling business, which later exploded into a national franchise known as "Shark Tank" success story "Cuban Pete."

• In 2009, Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, struggling to pay rent, rented out an air mattress in their apartment to attendees of a conference. This "aha" moment led to the birth of Airbnb, a hospitality giant, worth billions today.

• In 1997, Reed Hastings was frustrated by late fees from Blockbuster. This personal annoyance fueled his vision for a DVD-by-mail service, later evolving into the streaming giant we know today as Netflix.

• In 2005, YouTube was founded by three former PayPal employees after they struggled to share a video online. Recognizing the need for a video-sharing platform, they capitalized on the chaos of Web 2.0 and built an empire.

• In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg was approached by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss to help build a social network for Harvard students. While the partnership didn't last, it sparked the idea for Facebook, which Zuckerberg capitalized on, changing the face of social media.

• In 1984, Martha Stewart's car got a flat tire near Martha's Vineyard. While waiting for help, she explored an antique store and discovered a stunning collection of tableware. This chance encounter fueled her passion for homemaking and launched her media empire.

• In 2006, Jack Dorsey attended a tech conference where he overheard discussions about group communication and technology. This sparked the idea for Twitter, forever changing the way we connect online.

• In 1971, Bill Gates met Paul Allen at a computer club. Their shared passion for technology led to the founding of Microsoft, shaping the personal computer landscape.

• Sadly, we don’t always grab opportunities when they present themselves to us. Don’t be like these folks:

• In 2000, Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings approached Blockbuster about a partnership. Unfortunately for Blockbuster, their CEO just smiled and laughed at Hastings.

• In the 1970s, Kodak, a leader in film photography, developed digital camera technology but shelved it, fearing it would cannibalize their existing business. This decision ultimately led to their decline and eventual bankruptcy.

• In the 1970s, Xerox developed the Alto, a groundbreaking personal computer with a graphical user interface. However, they focused on selling it to businesses instead of consumers, missing out on the PC revolution.

• In the early 2000s, Myspace was the dominant social networking platform, boasting millions of users. However, they failed to adapt to changing user preferences and innovations, allowing Facebook to eventually overtake them.

• In 1998, Yahoo had the chance to acquire Google for $1 million but declined, deeming it "not a core business." This missed opportunity proved costly as Google grew into a tech giant worth trillions today.

Opportunities can come in various forms, from chance encounters to personal frustrations, keen observations, and the ability to connect the dots.

Remember, the right place and right time might be closer than you think.

Tier your rewards - Create different tiers with varying price points and benefits. This allows viewers to choose a level that suits their budget and interests. Your top tier might be a mastermind or even personalized coaching.

Maintain consistency - Upload regularly to both platforms to keep your audience engaged and excited about supporting you. Consider once weekly to be the minimum. Break longer videos into multiple shorter videos to emphasize how much content is available.

Promote cross-pollination - Mention your Patreon on your YouTube videos and vice versa. Link to your Patreon in your video descriptions and social media profiles.

Interact with your patrons - Respond to comments, answer questions, and show appreciation for their support. Build a strong community on both platforms.

Today we have the privilege of chatting with Anik Singal, a visionary entrepreneur, and the driving force behind Lurn. Anik's journey is not just a tale of business acumen and success, it's a testament to the power of resilience, learning from failures, and the relentless pursuit of dreams. And from challenging the norms of a traditional career path to overcoming staggering obstacles, his story inspires and educates. And today we're going to dive deep into the mind of the man who's turned his passion into a thriving business empire and is now a beacon of hope and guidance for entrepreneurs worldwide. Anik, welcome. It's a pleasure to chat with you.

Hey, thanks for having me. I'm excited to be here. And yeah, I appreciate the time.

Well, maybe I can start by asking you about the moment you realised that entrepreneurship was your true calling. Anik Singal:

Oh, man. You know what? It's funny because I think there were lots of hints along the way since I was a little kid. I think I realised it thoroughly though when I was already in pre-med, I'm in college, I'm on a full scholarship. I mean, I'm on a one-way ticket to Ivy League med schools. I have my life made, and yet there I lay in bed miserable. I couldn't get out of bed every morning. And when I say I'm made, I mean I'm literally, I am going to undergrad at one of the best programmes in the country that I competed to get into. I have a full scholarship. I'm actually getting paid to go to college.

I'm being recruited to go to top Ivy League med schools my freshman year of pre-med. So I'm like, I have it made, and yet I was miserable.

And so, there was a moment I remember sitting back. I'm a very self-reflective person. I can reflect really well, and I think that's a skill that everyone should develop.

And so I asked myself one morning when I just did not want to go to class, I said, "When was I the happiest? When have I been the happiest?" And I realized going all the way back to when I was a little kid, I was like, I misguided, I misjudged myself this whole time. I was the happiest when I was doing my own thing. I was the happiest when I was building a business or being creative and out there creating.

Anik Singal:

And so while still in pre-med, I started doing a little tinkering on little entrepreneurial projects and I just loved it. Although none of it was working, I eventually took the massive step of just leaving this made for me life all behind. I went to switch universities. I went to study business. I think it was somewhere freshman year early when I started college that I realized it. But then, I mean, you go back to when I was in third grade. And now that I realized it, there's clear signs that I was an entrepreneur as far back as I can think.

Yeah, hindsight can be a good thing, can't it, when you look back on those early achievements. What was the initial challenge that you faced though when you started out, when you decided that this was your future?

Anik Singal:

Yeah, I think the initial challenge we all face is just lack of knowledge, lack of association, lack of everything, right? You just don't know where to go, who to go to. I don't have entrepreneurs in my family at the time. I didn't know what I didn't know.

And so here I am trying to build a business. What does that mean? There's a gazillion options out there. I have no money. I'm not going to ask my parents. I don't even want to tell anybody that I'm doing this because they're all going to call me crazy. It's not like anyone believes what you believe. And so it's that lonely lack of knowing, yet you're still inspired and you want to figure it out. And then all of that piles on with the fact that you make mistake after mistake after mistake. You make error after error.

So, you're failing. You don't know who to ask for help, you don't want to tell anybody, yet you still believe. It's this really strange mixture of feelings. And those who survive through that and thrive through that are usually the ones... Or not usually, are the ones that succeed. Many, I believe, that have tried to become an entrepreneur, get stuck somewhere in those mixture of feelings and can't get past it, and that's where they fall apart. So that was my first biggest challenge, was just figuring out how do I carve through this massive.

Here's the thing, if you want to be a doctor, it's a pretty set straight path. Lawyer, path. Engineer, path. Plumber, path. I mean, every profession out there has a clear cut path.

You can Google it and it tells you boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Entrepreneurship does not. There is no path. And so that I think is the biggest challenge entrepreneur goes through.

And they say that success leaves clues. Did you look up to anybody at this time, Anik? Who were your mentors if you like?

Anik Singal:

Yeah, absolutely. I've had many mentors throughout my entire career. And I feel that mentors, you have some mentors that'll be with you forever, but you have some mentors, that you'll be with you for a period of time and then you actually surpass them.

I think the person I looked up to the most was my father. Now, he's not an entrepreneur. He's a nuclear mechanical engineer. He's a brilliant man and he's way smarter than I am, but he's in a completely different line. However, here's what's really inspiring. He grew up in a village at one point that had no electricity. He used to study for his school under lampposts, street lampposts. His house had no electricity. Candles. And here's the irony, and yet he went on to, at the end of his career, he is retired now, he was the head of two nuclear power plants in the United States.

Anik Singal:

Literally the government head. So, he could, at any moment notice, shut them down, turn them on, boss them around. I thought that was the most ironic thing. You think about it, as someone who grew up studying with no electricity, now overseeing, and commanding the electricity that millions of people receive. I saw where he took our family single-handedly. My mom was mostly stay at home. She had a daycare at the house, but it was kind of on and off. And so, my dad... and I watched what he did. I saw the opportunities he gave me. And so, I always tell people that even when I do become a billionaire in my life at some point, my success, and feats that I achieve will be nowhere near what my father did. I mean, he crossed far, far bigger chasms of success. So, I used to look at that and just say, "It's upon me to take our family name to the next level and I need to do that."

And then of course, in business, I had great mentors at different parts. An individual who really made a deep impact in my life in the world of direct marketing and information marketing was Justin Ford, who I don't know why, saw talent in me and didn't just take me on. He insisted and fought and convinced me to let him mentor me. He's the brother of Mark Ford, which many people may not know is Michael Masterson, who's arguably one of the best copywriters to have ever lived. So, I got the good fortune of being directly mentored and coached by the brother of the best marketer who's ever lived. So those are two people that I think I always consistently try to remember and give credit to for where I am today.

I'd always really been a child of the internet. Nowadays, every kid is a child of the internet, but back then it was very, very rare that somebody that was young was into the internet.

If you're already making money online, then here’s a question for you...

Are you stuck in a loop of chasing new products, affiliates, and traffic sources?

Some places to start:

• Craft a compelling value proposition by clearly communicating the unique benefits your product or service offers.

• Make sure your landing pages are laser-focused on converting visitors into leads or customers. Use clear CTAs, eliminate distractions, and emphasize benefits over features. A/B test different layouts and copy to see what resonates best.

• Showcase testimonials, case studies, and customer reviews to build trust and credibility.

• Tailor messaging and offers to individual users. Use data and segmentation to understand their needs and preferences and deliver content and experiences that resonate with them.

• Ensure your website and brand presence project professionalism and trustworthiness.

• Make it easy for visitors to convert by streamlining your checkout process, offering multiple payment options, and minimizing any unnecessary steps or forms.

• Create a sense of urgency with limited time offers or limited quantities.

• Continuously monitor your conversion rates and track the performance of different strategies. Use data to identify what works and what doesn't and adapt your approach accordingly. Remember, conversion optimization is an ongoing process, not a one-time fix.

• Build positive relationships with your customers to increase their loyalty and encourage them to convert again in the future.

• Optimize your website for user experience (UX) by making navigation intuitive. Ensure mobile-friendliness and eliminate distractions to guide users seamlessly towards conversion.

• Use strong verbs, clear instructions, and contrasting colors to make your CTAs stand out and encourage user action.

Instead of frantically seeking new ways to attract customers, take the next month to focus on maximizing the value you extract from your existing ones. Imagine doubling your income without adding a single new product, simply by tweaking your existing infrastructure. Sounds pretty sweet right?

Your current business model is a treasure chest waiting to be optimized. Every email sequence, pricing structure, and membership tier holds untapped potential. By refining these internal elements, you can squeeze out more profit without lifting a finger.

The key is to focus on optimization, and not just expansion.

Think of McDonald's vs. your average burger van. Even with the same number of customers, McDonald's earns more because they've meticulously optimized their internal systems. The key is to apply that logic to your online business to maximize the value of each customer you bring in.

Try asking yourself:

• Can I increase my subscriber rate?

• Can I raise my prices without losing customers?

• Can I add more value to my existing offerings?

• Can I improve my email sequence conversion rate?

• Can I reduce churn by offering exclusive benefits to loyal customers?

Continuously analyze and improve your conversion funnel. Data tells a story, so leverage it to identify areas for optimization and maximize your conversion potential.

By focusing on these internal optimizations, you'll build a stronger, more profitable foundation for your online business. And when you do decide to expand externally, you'll be positioned for explosive growth.
