Shutterstock's New AI Image Editor Transforms Stock Photos Shutterstock has come up with a new way to change how we use stock photos. Usually, people download stock photos and then edit them using separate software. But now, Shutterstock is making things easier by adding AI editing tools right into its photo library. This means you can change any image on the site before you download it. The CEO, Paul Hennessy, says it's a big deal in the stock photo world and aims to make Shutterstock a one-stop solution for all your image content needs, making its library of 7 million images seem almost endless. https://www.shutterstock.com/discover/ai-features

New Tool Poisons AI Image Generators

Since last year, artists have been worried about AI image generators that use text-based instructions. Some of these generators use images from the internet without caring about copyright, and some can even imitate the styles of living artists. Now, a new tool is in the works to help artists protect their work and fight against these AI image generators. This tool is called Nightshade, and it aims to disrupt the AI models by corrupting them. If this tool becomes easily accessible, artists might be able to protect their creations; at least until AI finds a work around. This effort started in March with a project called Glaze, developed by researchers at the University of Chicago. They used a method called "style cloaks" to make tiny changes in images before putting them online. These changes prevent AI models from copying the artistic style. Nightshade is the newest incarnation of Glaze and actively influences the results of an AI model by providing corrupted training data. This data makes the model learn the wrong names for objects in an image. This case study involves a brick-and-mortar business with a ridiculously low engagement rate on their emails.

Keep in mind that this is a service-based business and email marketing was supposed to be their major sales nurturing vehicle. All emails were gained ethically from their local are using a lead magnet offered on their blog and through advertisements. The emails themselves are typical: Information mixed with promotions, and occasionally purely promotional emails. And the lead magnet was a good one that attracted plenty of leads every time they ran an ad. But the problem was after getting the lead magnet, subscriber engagement numbers would drop massively to less than 15% of subscribers every single time an email was sent. The business owner had two theories for why that was happening – either the emails were poor or they were attracting the wrong kinds of subscribers, in which case they would need to change the lead magnet. If you were advising this business owner, what would you suggest? They hired a marketing consultant who spent time pouring over the emails, the lead magnet and the numbers. It turns out that their lead magnet was good enough to attract the right kind of prospects for their business. The problem was getting subscribers to consume the emails after they received the lead magnet. Here’s how the consultant solved the problem: They broke down the lead magnet into a series of 10 emails that comprised an email course on the subject. The idea was to train subscribers to open the emails whenever they saw them in the inbox. When most people download a PDF, they plan to read it later, whereas emails are usually read immediately. To make this email course they added a small amount of content and did some other things to the emails that we’ll cover in a moment. Keep in mind that for this to work, the emails have to be enticing enough to get readers to continue opening and reading them.


Simply breaking a PDF into small sections might not be enough for this to make a big difference. This small change in how the lead magnet was delivered resulted in 81% engagement through the first 5 days of the course and 72% over the full 10 days. As you see some readers were lost in the second half of the email course, but that’s still a massive improvement over 15%. Furthermore, when the course was finished (all 10 email lessons were delivered), subscribers continued to engage at an average 44% engagement (CTR) for the next 8 weeks. And sales also increased dramatically because people were now opening and reading the emails as well as clicking the links. They even received responses from readers such as, “Thanks for this, can’t wait to get tomorrow’s email.” As mentioned, a few other changes were made: WIIFYR – What’s in it for your readers? Every email was written to give the reader what they wanted, including great info they could use, stories, entertainment, humor and special offers. It’s not about the sender; it’s about the receiver. Storytelling – Stories were inserted here and there about the problems customers had and how they were solved with the service, as well as stories of people who didn’t use the service and also a story of how the service was started. They even used two completely non-related stories that nicely segued into the point being made. Yes, there were lots of stories, but most of them were short and to the point. Cliffhangers – Two of the stories were continued in the next email. Want to know what happened next? Check your email tomorrow. Teasers - Each email contained great content as well as teasers on what would be covered in the next email. Calls to Action – Every email was another opportunity to ask the reader to do something, whether it was to go to the site, fill out a form, ask or answer a question, etc. Reply Back Call – Two of the emails asked readers to answer a quick question by replying with a word or two in the subject line. This was more about increasing deliverability than anything, but it also created engagement and made the emails more memorable. Free Offers – These were added later, and they worked well. Inside the course there are offers to take ADDITIONAL email courses, thereby getting people to engage even more with the emails as well as raising their hands to indicate what other services they are interested in.


Creating Expectation – The emails were sent at a specific time each day and readers were told to expect it at that time the next day. Creating Excitement – Emotional triggers were pulled whenever possible, and excitement was built into each email. This takes some finesse, but it makes a big difference. As an example, remember that one teacher you had in high school who engaged the students with excitement for the topic? Now imagine that teacher writing the emails and you get the idea. A few more email tips for you: Keeping the End in Mind – What do you want your subscribers to do? Whatever it is, tailor your course so that taking the action you want is the only logical next step for the reader. For example, your email course teaches how to get free traffic using SEO, but the more the reader learns, the more they realize they’d love to have a professional handling it all for them. Subscriber confirmation email - Include a short text to let readers know to expect a welcome email in the next minute or two after they confirm their subscription. This way they consciously look out for it even if it ends up in the spam or promotions tab. Welcome email – Fill this email with all the benefits of reading the future emails. This isn’t about selling your product. It’s about showing them everything they have to gain from taking the email course, reading every single email so they miss nothing, and how much their life can change because they open the emails. You might consider using bullet points in this one. Request a Welcome Email Response – In the welcome email, ask subscribers to reply with their response to a question. It could be as simple as confirming they received the email, or would they prefer benefit one or two, or what is their favorite _____? When they respond, their email provider will register your address as one the receiver wants to engage with. A reply has greater effect on deliverability than whitelisting and it's a more natural action. Open with Benefits – Lead each email with the benefits the reader will get from reading the rest of the email. Essentially in the first line or two you are selling then on reading the rest of the email. Always ensure that every email you send is beneficial to the reader. It’s not about you or your product, it’s about what your reader wants to achieve. This is what will keep them coming back day after day to consume your emails.

Kevin, welcome. Kevin Polley: Well, hello. Whatever time it is, wherever you are, thanks for listening. Editor: Well, it's good to have you with us, Kevin. Now, I guess we should start with asking if you can just share a little bit about your background and what initially inspired you to venture into this crazy world of digital marketing and online business. Kevin Polley: I think the best answer for that is I needed to make money because I'm totally unemployable. I started off in 1999 on this online journey, and that was when the internet was in its infancy and I bought my first domain name and at that time we didn't have WordPress or anything, so I went and took the time to learn how to write HTML.

And I put this page up and I suddenly realized that, well, how do people find this page that I've created? There's more to this story, so I've got a page that was trying to sell, I think it was gardening services at the time, and I just realized no one's going to find me. And that led me into the rest of the journey, which has involved becoming an SEO expert using schema.org, creating the UK module for one of the original open source shopping carts, creating a hosting company, getting involved in data transit.


Literally from 1999 to now, it's been one roller rollercoaster of a ride, and I'm just glad to be here. Editor: I can imagine. It all started with your green fingers, is that right? Kevin Polley: Exactly, yep. Editor: Got a lot to answer for those green fingers. When was this and what were you doing prior to that? Did you have a job? I know you said you're unemployable, but before that, what were you doing before that? Kevin Polley: I'm also a coded welder, so from an early age I never used to like getting up in the morning for school, and it became problematic when employers wanted me to turn up at a set time in the morning, and at the age of 17, 18, I never drunk, never ever drunk when I was younger than that, but with the hangover at 8:00 in the morning, it wasn't good. And I suppose my story could go back to when I was 11 and I realized that mum and dad weren't giving me enough pocket money, and my uncle turned around to me and he said, "Well, why don't you start a little part-time job?" And that was the gardening. And if you're that young, there's not many of the older generation that don't need a helping hand, and I tried to be polite, I tried to do a good job and they paid me. And then I got a job in an off license, and from there, the owner of that off license, he taught me about working to lists and planning what I was going to do, making sure the customer was happy, so I always had that entrepreneurial streak and it was always based on if I need something or I want something, I have to be responsible for making my way in the world. What was the point of being paid a pound an hour if I was working for someone back then when I could get five pounds an hour by working for the older people helping them, and they were happy to pay me for that? Then I became a DJ when I was 16, and as a DJ it brought together all of my passions at the time, which were music, drinking and women. And the money that a DJ on the circuit was working as an hourly rate was phenomenal, and it just made me realize again that having that freedom and the flexibility to manage your own life, manage your own time, set your own value, it would be the definition, the defining moment for me.


And since then, all of the skills that I've learned, the different businesses that I've started up, not just internet publishing businesses, printing businesses, it was that I've got to start something up to make a little bit more money or give myself a little bit more time so that I can spend more time playing music or spend more time on holiday or something like that. Editor: What came first in terms of your online endeavors? Kevin Polley: The first major thing in my online endeavors was the UK module for Zen Cart. Back then the internet was a new thing, people were being told, "If you're not on the internet, your business will suffer." And in the 1990s we had a nine, six ort modems, there was none of this face-to-face and video. Web pages were words, you couldn't even get pictures on them back then, so there's been this whole technology. And when you wanted to have a webpage, you then needed to find a way to sell it, and that was Zen Cart back then, which was an open-source shopping cart. And the problem was that the developers were all American, so if I wanted to sell a batch of leaflets or something like that, the states in the dropdown for the order form were all American and there was no UK module, and I realized that actually there's a bit of an opportunity here. I went in and I contacted the post office, got their first list of counties, and then Royal Mail, their list of drop zones, and I hacked, quite literally... I wasn't a coder then, I'm not a brilliant coder now, I'm a hacker, and that doesn't mean that I'm like Anonymous and I'm going to be getting into your bank account, it just means that I take a little bit of code that's here and a little bit of code that's there, find a little bit of knowledge and make something work to do what I needed it to do. My first step was the UK shopping cart for Zen Cart, and that allowed a couple of thousand people back then to set up their shops and distribute their products around the UK. Editor: It was one of those systems that just took the internet by storm as well, because it allowed people finally to make sales online. Then after that, you moved more into software development yourself, is that correct?


Kevin Polley: From then I used the software development skills that I picked up, hacking PHP, MySQL together to make a module for Zen Cart. I then realized that the next problem in my journey was going to be how do you get found in the search engines? You've now got a website, you've got your shopping cart platform, you've got a way of distributing the goods, but who and how are people going to find the product you are serving or selling in this big online web? I got into SEO at that point.

Out of 10 pieces of content that you work really hard to create, let’s say that 9 of them get almost no attention whatsoever while one of them goes viral and gets shared hundreds or even thousands of times. Wouldn’t you like to know in advance which one will go viral? This way you could skip creating the other 9 and focus solely on creating the one. Are You Making This Marketing Mistake?

If you want to grow your business organically, you’ve got to stop making this mistake now because it’s costing you followers and sales. Most marketers online and especially on social media that are trying to grow their business are going about it all wrong. They’re presenting bottom of the funnel content. Bottom of the funnel content is that content you present to people to sell them on purchasing your product. “Hey, buy this product, you’ll love it and it will do great things for you.” This isn’t going to make sales or grow your business because people don’t yet know who you are or why they should trust you. Expecting someone who does not know you to watch or listen to your sales pitch and then convert into a customer is only going to dash your dreams of growing your business. Instead, focus on giving top of the funnel content. This is real information that people can use, and it helps you capture an audience while establishing your authority on the topic. Let me give you a real-world example: You’re at a carnival and someone (I think they call them barkers) is yelling out that you should come over to their booth and buy their product. What do you do? Most likely you put your head down and walk away quickly. But what if that same person were giving something valuable away? You and people like you would flock to that booth. It’s the same way in the grocery store where they give out free food samples. People flock to get the samples, even when it’s a food they might never normally consider buying. Now let’s say that your online business is teaching marketing. Instead of shouting, “Hey, buy my marketing course!” Or, “Hey, hire me to do your marketing!” You instead say, “Hey, this is how you get your site ranked higher, this is how you capture leads, this is how you nurture your email list,” and so forth. Especially when your business is new, you’ve got to concentrate on building an audience first and marketing your products second. This will build your business, provide you with tons of leads and eventually provide you with not just sales, but customers who keep coming back for more.

Their dream is to work a few hours each week to maintain what they’ve built and grow the business no further. And for some this is a great option. 3: Let go and grow. If you want to continue to grow your business bigger, faster and better, then you’re going to need help. And when you bring on other people to work in your business, you’ll need to let go of some things. Sure, they don’t do it exactly as you do it. So what? Relax, let go and let your business grow with the help of others. Think of delegation is your secret to success and sanity. By letting go of tasks that don't need your special touch, you can free up your time and energy to focus on what you do best, as well as ensuring you have enough time to get away from your business and recharge your own batteries. How do you know when it’s time to start delegating? • When you are feeling overwhelmed. • When business is booming but your workload overflowing. • When you lack certain skills that could easily be handled by experts. • Want you want to focus on your strengths and let go of the annoying tasks. • What can you delegate? • The repetitive stuff: Scheduling, social media, bookkeeping – they can all go. • The specialized stuff: Design, legal matters, website development – leave these to the pros. • The low-impact stuff: Tasks that don't contribute directly to your goals – delegate and focus on what matters most.

Why stress over growing a business if that’s not what you want to do? I know of several online marketers who created one or several products and stopped there. They still update the products and they still do just enough to keep the sales rolling in, but most of the week they are off living their lives of freedom. Other online marketers see freedom as an ever-growing business where the major share of work is done by others. They put in more time and effort, but they also get more reward. It’s your choice. Let go and grow your business with the help of others or maintain a one-person shop with plenty of free time to live your life. If you choose to grow your business with the help of others, remember that delegation isn't about giving up control; it's about empowering yourself and your business. By letting go of the reins and trusting others, you can unlock incredible growth and create a business that you can truly be proud of.
