A Second Century of Art and Inspiration

MOVING FORWARD IN PARTNERSHIP WITH COMMUNITY

Dear Friends,

For The Heckscher Museum of Art community, spring brings beautiful tulips to Heckscher Park, and extraordinary student artwork to the Museum through Long Island’s Best. Our signature juried exhibition, featuring the work of high school students, creates an exciting and creative space for these young people to share their art and their dreams. For many of these same students, the Heckscher is the first museum they visited in elementary school, and the inspiration for the work they are doing now in high school. Their artistic work demonstrates great curiosity, craft, thoughtfulness and engagement with the world. You won’t want to miss it.

The educational work we do is one way we bring community together. The Museum recently co-hosted our first inter-faith Ramadan Iftar dinner with Empowered Muslim Women of New York. The beautiful community gathering of nearly one hundred individuals, came together over a meal, in peace and prayer, to celebrate

our shared humanity surrounded by the inspiring spiritual art of Robert Graham Carter.

This summer we will participate in community celebrations of Long Island Pride; Juneteenth; and the Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, as we look forward to the June opening of All of Me With All of You: LGBTQ+ Art Out of the Collection, an expansive summer show. This groundbreaking exhibition is being developed by guest curator Victoria Munro, with input from an intergenerational advisory group, teen community members, and local non-profit partners and will include 150 years worth of important works and artists held in the Heckscher Museum collection.

The Heckscher Museum of Art gratefully serves as a forum for community where sharing and educating leads to better understanding and empathy. Our mission is to create opportunities for everyone to experience art that broadens understanding of the past, fosters community connections to the present, and creates diverse possibilities for the future.

We could not continue to pursue this mission without the support of each of you. This issue includes heartfelt thanks to the scores of members, sponsors, and donors that continue to make our mission a reality. We work tirelessly every day to ensure that all people have access to the arts and feel safe and welcome in our galleries. Thank you for being partners with us in these efforts.

Heather Arnet, Executive Director and CEO; Lisa Sayedi, Manager of Docents & Community Outreach; and Shazia Jabeen, president, Empowered Muslim Women of New York. Below, Selene Brown, Threads Won't Let Me Forget, Bay Shore HS, Long Island’s Best 2025.

ALL OF ME WITH ALL OF YOU:

LGBTQ+ ART OUT OF THE COLLECTION

JUNE 7 - SEPTEMBER 14

Sponsors: Michelle Hatzopoulos & Evangeline Knell; Andrea & Neil Kreinik; Alicia L. Ruberti & Kathryn Kroleski; LGBT Network

This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

For the first time, The Heckscher Museum of Art is exploring its collection through the lens of LGBTQ+ identities and histories. Spanning more than 150 years, the exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Victoria Munro, Executive Director of the Alice Austen House, is guest curator of the show.

Artists who lived and worked on Long Island will anchor All of Me with All of You: LGBTQ+ Art Out of the Collection. Six photographs taken on Fire Island by the collective PaJaMa (Paul Cadmus, Jared French, and Margaret French) express the artistic and personal

freedoms that LGBTQ+ communities nurtured on Long Island in the first half of the twentieth century. Photographs by Huntington artist Joanne Mulberg capture the spirit of Fire Island in the 1970s and 1980s. Artworks by internationally significant figures including Marsden Hartley, Alfonso Ossorio, Betty Parsons, Alice Rahon, Robert Rauschenberg, and Emilio Sanchez are also featured, alongside new acquisitions by Amy Adler, Laylah Ali, vanessa german, and Wardell Milan, among others.

This project is made possible with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. With this generous support, the Museum will engage youth and intergenerational community members in a robust year of exhibitions and public programming highlighting and celebrating works, histories, and legacies of LGBTQ+ artists in our permanent collection.

Clockwise from top, Laylah Ali, Untitled, 2004, Gouache on paper. Gift from the Collection of Ninah and Michael Lynne; Emilio Sanchez, Untitled, Bronx Multi-Colored Storefronts, late 1980s, Oil on canvas. Gift of the Emilio Sanchez Foundation; PaJaMa, Jared French, Fire Island, 1949, Vintage gelatin silver print. Museum Purchase.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS ANNOUNCED

The Heckscher Museum is thrilled to announce three new additions to The Board of Trustees.

Mike Durney has joined the Board as Treasurer. Durney is Chief Executive Officer of ACDS, Inc., an organization that provides a lifecycle of services to neurodiverse individuals with the goal of helping them develop to their fullest potential. Since 2020, Durney has been the CFO and Principal of ProCFO Partners, LLC. “I'm thrilled to be joining the Board of The Heckscher Museum to support the team in continuing their journey of growth. I've been incredibly impressed with the range and success of initiatives that this great team has launched. I’ve noticed the passion that runs through the Board and the staff. I can't wait to see what the future brings.”

Evangeline Knell is Co-Founder of Going Local Media and publisher of Long Island activity guide goinglocal.li. She is the Owner and Creative Director of Identity Digital, a video production and live streaming company amplifying community organizations with diverse, socially connected audiences. "The Heckscher is an oasis of creativity, expression, healing, and innovation for Long Islanders of all backgrounds, and I am honored to be a part of the Board of Trustees,” she said.

Rozita Shay has spent the last 40 years “moving in and out of the art world.” She was involved with the George Grosz Estate early in her career and continues to engage with his works, noting “I find it especially exciting to work with a museum that houses some of his most important pieces. The Heckscher Museum is a true gem in the heart of Long Island, and I am honored to contribute to its mission."

"The Heckscher is an oasis of creativity, expression, healing, and innovation for Long Islanders of all backgrounds."

AT LARGE

Exhibitions at distinguished partner organizations highlight important works on loan from the Heckscher Museum collection.

Two works by George Grosz (1893–1959), Man and Woman (n.d.) and Eclipse of the Sun (1926), are currently on loan from the Heckscher Museum of Art, to Neue Galerie New York, for the exhibition “Neue Sachlichkeit / New Objectivity” This special exhibition commemorates the centenary of Gustav F. Hartlaub’s 1925 groundbreaking survey of the same name held at the Kunsthalle Mannheim. The New Objectivity movement is considered one of the most significant artistic developments of the twentieth century and Eclipse of the Sun is considered one of the most impactful works by one of the movements most important artists, George Grosz. The exhibition runs through May 26, 2025.

Three works from the Heckscher Museum permanent collection are included in the Deco 100 exhibition at the Nassau County Museum of Art, on view through June 15, 2025, these include: Robert Winthrop Chanler, Portrait of Henry McBride (1929); Warren Wheelock, Tobacco Jar (1922); and Willaim Zorach, Cat Standing with Long Tail (1927).
