Guidelines 2015-2016 The only juried exhibition on Long Island that offers high school students the opportunity to show their work in a museum This prestigious juried exhibition features works of art created by Long Island high school students in grades 9-12, based on artwork shown in The Heckscher Museum of Art during the 2015-2016 school year.

Approximately 80 works of art in various media will be exhibited in the Museum galleries April 9 through May 15, 2016. Prizes are awarded in several categories including Best in Show.

All exhibiting students and their art teachers receive a complimentary copy of the exhibition catalogue featuring images of all artwork and student artist statements.

All exhibiting young artists receive a Certificate of Exhibition and art teachers of top award winners receive Outstanding Teacher Awards.

HOW TO REGISTER DEADLINE: Friday, November 13, 2015 To participate in this program, students must register through their schools.

Each school must complete a School Participation Form and pay a non-refundable $25 registration fee. This entitles a school to four student entries, created and selected under the guidance of the art teacher.

Upon receipt of the School Participation Form and payment, participating teachers who have provided e-mail addresses will receive regular reminders throughout the school year.

Submission Requirements • •

Student must be enrolled in grades 9-12 at a participating school in Nassau or Suffolk Counties, New York.

Student artwork must be based on artwork shown in The Heckscher Museum of Art during the 2015-2016 school year and created and selected for submission under the guidance of the school’s art teacher. Each student may submit only one work of art.

Collaborative pieces by more than one student count as one submission.

Painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, photography, computer graphics, sculpture, video, and mixed media artwork may be submitted.

Size Requirements, Framing, and Pedestals Two-dimensional artwork • •

Height and width (when added together) maximum of 64”. For example, 24” x 40” and 32” x 32” are acceptable sizes.

Artwork must be ready to hang - framed, matted, wired, or otherwise prepared to be hung. Glass is required for works on paper.

Three-dimensional artwork • •

Maximum 72” tall (including pedestal), 24” wide, 30” deep.

The Museum supplies pedestals to display three-dimensional work.

STUDENT ENTRY FORM with ARTIST STATEMENT Available online at heckscher.org/education_libest beginning January 8, 2016

DEADLINE: Friday, February 26, 2016 As part of the Student Entry Form submission process, each student must write a 125 word (approximately) artist statement to accompany the artwork explaining the connection between the inspiration work of art seen in the Museum and student artwork being submitted. The statement plays a key role in the jurying process. For works selected for exhibition, the artist statement, and thumbnail of the inspiration artwork are displayed as an object label alongside the artwork.

When visiting The Heckscher Museum, I was inspired by Untitled by Jerry Uelsmann to make a piece focusing on monochromatic contrast and utilizing surrealist techniques. I loved the way Uelsmann combined the massive roots of the tree with the house to make a unified juxtaposition of objects. In my own work, I combined the contrasting shapes of geometric city buildings and organic clouds and waves that surround the profile of my face to create an image that draws the viewer’s attention. This contrast in my artwork represents my inner struggle with deciding what I want for my future - a modern, coordinated way of life or a more relaxed “go-with-the-flow” lifestyle.

ARTWORK DELIVERY Monday and Tuesday, March 28 and 29, 2016

A completed artwork label must be attached to each student work.

Artwork label available at heckscher.org/education_libest The Heckscher Museum of Art will not accept work that is unstable, damaged, or does not meet specified conditions and guidelines. The Museum is not responsible for damage that may occur during the transportation or jurying of artwork. Students should protect artwork during travel.

Students will: • Discuss how to find “inspiration” in professional artwork.

• Discover the value of multiple interpretations of a work of art.

• View student artwork from past Long Island’s Best exhibitions and the work of art from the Museum that inspired the student.

• Read and discuss artist statements from past Long Island’s Best exhibitions.

• View and discuss artwork that students may select from to be inspired for Long Island’s Best 2016 (in the Museum galleries or via PowerPoint).
