Memory Care Assisted Living at NewBridge on the Charles

World-class care from a nonprofit leader

You want the best for your loved one who has Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. So do we. Strongly informed by research, memory care assisted living at NewBridge on the Charles offers comfortable and secure apartments and living areas, stimulating programming that keeps residents active and engaged, and specialized services to care for those who can no longer safely care for themselves.

Created by Hebrew SeniorLife, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, NewBridge’s continuum of care model ensures access to onsite medical services when needed with minimal disruption and

maximum comfort and convenience. And all within luxurious surroundings and the natural beauty of our 162-acre campus. As with our traditional assisted living residents, we take care of the daily tasks that have become difficult for your loved one, allowing them to focus their time and energy on continuing to learn, grow, and enjoy life in the moment. That’s what NewBridge is all about.

Our memory care area is designed to be soothing and easy to navigate for residents. Color and lighting schemes are chosen intentionally, and carpeting is free of complex patterns that can confuse people

with dementia. We also provide door-side shadow boxes filled with photos and mementos to help people identify their apartment. With our secured surroundings, you can be assured your loved one is safe.

A continuum of care for current and future needs

Memory care residents at NewBridge on the Charles benefit from extensive personal care to help them with activities of daily living, medication management, and more. This is personalized care, customized to each individual’s needs.

As needs may change over time, NewBridge offers a comprehensive continuum of care that includes our on-campus Hebrew Rehabilitation Center, which is licensed as a long-term chronic care hospital and provides specialized care for late

stage dementia; our five-star-rated Rehabilitation Services Unit (RSU), which provides post-acute health care; and onsite medical services through our Harvard Medical School-affiliated practice that includes a geriatrician and specialists in podiatry, audiology, and psychiatry who provide world-class, concierge-like care.

Beyond the care your loved one will receive to maximize their independence, our director of nursing and well-trained staff

monitor all residents’ health to promote wellness and prevent hospitalization. Offering these services at NewBridge means less disruption should health needs change; for example, if your loved one ever needs rehab or long-term chronic care, they can receive it here. We also offer respite stays and—if ever needed— onsite palliative and hospice care.

Living at NewBridge means living well

The memory care assisted living residences at NewBridge were designed based on the latest research into the environmental needs of seniors with dementia. Color-coding, enhanced lighting, shadow boxes, looped hallways, and other design elements enhance a resident’s sense of well-being. A large enclosed courtyard and another secure garden area provide safe access to the outdoors. Original works of art throughout stimulate the mind and senses.

With 36 comfortable, well-lit apartments dedicated for memory care assisted living, we offer vibrant places and helpful services

so your loved one can live their best possible life. Our healthy dining is all-inclusive, providing delicious meals aligned with each resident’s tastes, preferences, and nutritional requirements and restrictions.

Programming informed by research keeps seniors engaged

Our specialized memory care programming—informed by research done by Hebrew Senior Life’s Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research— keeps residents as mentally and physically sharp and engaged as possible. We are committed to helping residents make the most of the cognitive abilities they have at all times. One way we do this is through music, dance, art, and poetry, which provide channels for self-expression with proven therapeutic benefits.

We also take residents on outings to movies, museums, shopping centers, zoos, and even duck boat tours of Boston. We engage them in cooking, mental games and puzzles, and walking groups. People with dementia can learn new things and do more than they typically are challenged to do. At NewBridge, we see the satisfaction that residents feel when they are successful, and we strive to help them make meaningful victories of any size every day.

Our multigenerational programs with students from our campus neighbor, the K-8 Rashi School, as well as other area schools bring meaning and joy to everyday life. Over the course of repeat visits, residents share their stories and wisdom with the students, and take from them a glimpse of the future, one that they are helping to shape.
