Extreme Winter Sports
BY MEREDITH KLUEVER
Beyond resort slopes are the fringe sports that most winter enthusiasts won’t experience or even try in their lifetimes. Here are three extreme, adrenaline pumping sports you may want to leave to the experts.
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY
Cat skiing offers backcountry access to skiers without needing expensive touring gear or a helicopter. The snowcat is an enclosed, fully tracked vehicle made for traversing snow. Access to backcountry glory provides the opportunity to ski or ride pristine powder. Only advanced to expert skiers are recommended to partake in cat skiing. “We quantify that as being able to ski ungroomed terrain at a black diamond pitch at resorts out West,” explained Bekah Stevens, operations manager for Park City Powder Cats. With chutes and slopes running from 600 to 2,000 vertical feet, these runs of fresh powder are unlike anything you’ve skied in a resort.
The backcountry calls many to its open fields of powder, including those enjoying it on snowmobiles. Adam Pulley, owner of Uinta Recreation, says there are two types of snowmobiling— the follow-the-leader type on groomed trails and the backcountry riding through deep powder excursions. “We do a real backcountry tour, which caters to people who have previous experience and want to get off- trail,” explained Pulley. With great risk comes the great reward of experiencing nature untouched and in its most raw form. Advanced and expert backcountry snowmobilers will know how to deal with common problems, like tipping the machine, engine flooding, overheating and getting stuck.
Danger to the snowmobilers themselves includes hitting trees or rocks, getting pinned by the 500-pound machine, and, of course, avalanches. Riders in the backcountry should never go alone and make sure they have the proper safety and survival tools like radio, shovel, extra gloves and outerwear, food and airbag pack.
There may not be a more Western sport than skijoring— think cowboys and cowgirls on skis and horses. A skilled horseback rider pulls an experienced skier with a rope attached to the horse’s saddle through a racecourse. The skijoring season mainly runs from January to March. In skijoring, the rider on horseback steers the horse while the skier holds onto a 30-foot rope attached to the saddle. It’s sort of like water skiing, just replace the boat with a horse and the water with snow. There are many variations of the sport but the timed Western version includes riding off jumps, going through gates and grabbing rings at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. The dangers for this sport are unlike sports in the backcountry where snowpack and avalanches are your biggest worries; for skijoring, it’s speed and control. Highspeed wipeouts, collisions, and falls on concrete-like packed snow are the biggest dangers to racers. But heck, since when do cowboys and cowgirls shy away from tough situations?

Heber Valley is chock full of creative, talented, and experienced people who, luckily for us, turned their passions into businesses. Here’s a compilation of some of the tried-and-true hometown entrepreneurs, ranging from your neighborhood butcher to pharmacist.
Heber Valley Meat is one of the only butcher shops practicing whole carcass processing, allowing for custom cuts of meat. “We wanted to bring high quality, local, and fresh meats to the Heber Valley as well as offer a convenient option for local farmers and ranchers to get their animals processed,” said Owner Jessie Morris.
Heber Valley Meat sources ingredients locally, including for their house-made bratwurst and sausages. They also offer custom mobile processing for local ranchers and wild game processing from deer to elk to moose.
Ryan Swensen has been a pharmacist for over 20 years in pretty much every position, employed by both chains and family-owned pharmacies. He worked at Ridley’s in Midway until it closed, leading him to open Midway Family Pharmacy. “Loving Midway as much as I do, I thought, ‘I’m going to open my own pharmacy here.’ My history has given me all the skills to do that.”
With a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, he provides next-level care. Midway Family Pharmacy prides itself on knowing its customers, many of which followed Swensen from Ridley’s. The pharmacy also supplies over-the-counter medicines, cold and flu care, immunizations and local goods.
Swenson proudly proclaims, “Having a pharmacy that knows what you’re taking, knows about all the nuances of your health and your healthcare is hard to get. Are you tired of being a number? You can come here. We’re making pharmacy personal again.”
Computer and IT Support
ACE Rescue Computer Solutions wants technology to work for you not against you. Owner Aaron Cheatwood has a passion for IT and delights in finding solutions for your home and business.
“I love doing IT solutions because I enjoy the thrill of finding issues and resolutions, and I love helping people to become more efficient and get more out of their technology,” Cheatwood explained. “I genuinely enjoy seeing people move from frustration to confidence.”
Cheatwood also enjoys interacting with his customers from all walks of life. No job is too big or too small; he enjoys any task from finding lost family photos to securing small business systems to protecting peoples’ livelihoods.
With multiple neighborhood locations throughout Utah and Colorado, Grand Valley Bank knows its customers personally. Over the years Grand Valley Bank has opened locations in Heber, Midway, and Park City. The knowledgeable staff and friendly atmosphere provide exceptional customer service. As part of its local connection, Grand Valley Bank is also the proud host to the Deer Valley Community Concert Series.

The Simple Look of 2023
BY BRANDI CHRISTOFFERSEN
Everyday life can cause a bit of a time crunch, which can particularly affect one’s beauty regimen. No need to fret our active readers, for 2023 is the year for fast and easy!
A relaxed aura doesn’t require spending hours in a face mask. In fact, all you need is a few focused minutes:
• Begin by slicking your hair back into a tight ponytail or a colorful fabric headband. This timeless style creates a classic, fi nished look.
• Next, prep your face with a gentle exfoliant to smooth over any dry patches.
• Place a drop of sugar scrub on your fi ngertip and lightly apply to your lips. Gently remove the scrub for smooth and soft lips.
• From there, apply a 3-in-1 application of tint, moisturizer and sunscreen to even out your skin tones and provide protection from the elements.
For Some Added Pop
After the essentials are completed, these quick additions will enhance your casual look:
• Wake with puffy eyes? We have a “pro-tip” that really does work! Dab a dollop of Preparation H under your eyes and let it sit for a moment.
• While the dollop is soaking in, keep your kissable lips hydrated by applying your favorite chapstick or lip balm. (Tinted options add a nice hint of color.)
• Next, play up your brows with a makeup brush. The full, fluffy brow is modern and cool.
• Now, go back to your eyes and tap nude colored concealer under your eyes and on your lids, then even it out with a soft sponge.
If you have a few extra minutes, try these extra steps:.
• Select one nude tone across eyes and cheeks. This produces a cohesive and flawless look.
• Add a dew highlighting balm around eyes and face to give a soft glow to your skin.
• Brighten your entire face, by blotting a light color to your eyelids and lips.
• Before leaving the house, open your freezer door and let the cold air refresh your entire body.

TURN WINTER TO WONDERLAND
Adorn Your Outdoor Space
BY STEVE PHILLIPS
Winter is warmly welcomed in Heber Valley and in such an picturesque setting, creative residents decorate their yards, decks and windows with captivating, colorful displays. And that doesn’t just mean holiday décor. Make your outdoor space a wonderland all season long.
The first order of business is to invest in a sturdy snowblower or hire a service to keep your sidewalks, porches and decks clear of snow. Alternatively, consider covering outdoor entertainment areas with artificial turf or outdoor area rugs. Doing so makes clearing snow easier.
Front porches and windows are ideal for creative winter decor. Traditional evergreen wreaths adorning front doors, coupled with winter-themed welcome mats or handpainted welcome signs are endearing and inviting. Hang rustic planters filled with artificial plants and berries from window sills as well. As outdoor enthusiasts, vintage winter skis, toboggans or sleds, firmly attached to exterior walls, make a cheerful statement. Nature lovers may choose to display statues or paintings of moose, bald eagles and other mountain wildlife.
Many homes in the area have backyard decks just waiting for winter wardrobes. Seating and lounging furniture, hardy enough to endure harsh winters, are essential to a successful winter soiree. Sturdy couch cushions and pillows add personality and color to the atmosphere.
Among the most popular backyard accouterments are
outdoor fire pits. These come in a variety of sizes, shapes and price tags. Fueled by propane or natural gas, they’re perfect for attracting a backyard gathering on cold winter nights. Solar-powered lights and lanterns shed light on an outdoor scene. Flanking walkways, decks, fences and foliage with hanging strands of multi-colored LED lights illuminate any scene. Flameless candles, scattered liberally around entertainment areas, are safe and tasteful. And who says artificial holiday trees only belong indoors for a few weeks a year. Bring them outside and wrap them with colorful lights and waterproof ribbons. Add winter or ski ornaments and position them at the corners of any deck to frame the scene all winter long.
For a magical effect, melodic wind chimes come alive when gentle winds waft through the yard. To really bring life to any winter porch, hang well-stocked bird feeders to attract finches, pine siskins, black-capped chickadees and other common wintering birds. Top off the winter ambiance by strategically spreading evergreen boughs and pine cones throughout.

Favorites for Adults and Kids Alike
The next time you’re out for a family meal, may we suggest introducing a tradition practiced in Amor Towles’ novel, A Gentleman in Moscow. Instruct the table to read their menu from the bottom up and to decide on a dessert first. This charming exercise ensures that everyone ends their meal with a sweet delicacy.
To help get you started, here are local delights appealing to all ages and tastes.
Home Baked Pies
Betty’s Cafe is our readers’ choice for home baked pies. This fourth-generation family owned eatery enchants patrons with made-from-scratch specials, like apple, peach, chocolate and coconut cream. Tip: Take a slice home for later.
Served by the cup and piled high, the kiddos will love Spin Café’s “world-famous” gelato. Made from scratch in small batches and using all natural ingredients, the dense ice cream has a velvety texture and intense flavor. Tip: For families avoiding dairy, try the sorbetto stuffed with fruit.
Homemade Cinnamon Roll
You will be hard pressed to find a more scrumptious and sticky cinnamon roll than at Chick’s Cafe . This decadent delight is the perfect reward after a long day at work or school. Tip: Order a cup of hot cocoa for the ultimate combo.
Voted Best of State for 18 years in a row, Dairy Keen’s famous shakes are made with a secret homemade ice cream recipe. The shakes can be ordered thick or thin and come in multiple flavor choices including fresh strawberry, cookie dough and Oreo Mint. Tip: Add malt to give your shake a rich taste and enhance the flavor.
Ga`ivsa Corn Pudding
The Lakehouse at Deer Creek features recipes that celebrate Utah’s native and pioneer culture. If you’re looking for a unique vegan and/or gluten free dessert, you will love the Ga`ivsa Corn Pudding. This delicacy blends the bold flavor of mesquite roasted corn with the sweet bite of fresh berries. Tip: The menu changes regularly so check for specials.
Peanut Butter & Banana Smoothie
Pick up this tasty refreshment to sweeten a mid-day meal or as the perfect after-school treat for your hungry scholar. The Bagel Den is open 7 days a week from 6 am to 5 pm and has a convenient drive-thru. Tip: If you’re all about the fruit, try the Mixed Berry Smoothie.
