Boredom was a problem on the old sailing vessels. Not just for pirates, but for sailors in the Royal Navy too. Many pirates actually had an easier time on board than ‘The King’s Men’ because they got more than just wages—they got a share of the goods they plundered. In the Navy, boredom led to harsh discipline and this in turn could lead to mutiny by the crew against the captain. One famous mutiny occurred on 28 April 1789. Commanding Lieutenant William Bligh set sail on HMS Armed Vessel Bounty after a stopover of five months in Tahiti. Many of the crew wanted to stay on land and abandon their seafaring lives, but they had contracts to fulfil. In an attempt to discipline the crew, Bligh resorted to increasingly harsher punishments. After three weeks of misery, the crewmen took control of the Bounty and set William Bligh, along with 18 of his loyal crew, adrift in the ship’s open launch. Amazingly, Bligh survived and returned to England. Singing rhythmically was a way to co-ordinate the physical strength required for tasks such as raising the ship’s anchor, loading cargo and hauling lines, as well as being a cure for boredom. Sea Shanties were not originally set to music, but chanted – by the shantyman calling out the words while the crew called out the chorus in rhythm to their work. ‘The Worst Old Ship’ was recited while pumping out the bilges; it reminded the crew that if they did not pump the water out there was a chance of sinking. This is an abbreviated version without the chorus.

Ballads were narrative songs about historical events and ancient legends. Ballads were written to spread news or gossip. Unlike shanties, they were sung to melodies.

One 15th century pirate, Andrew Barton, had permission from King James IV to carry out piracy, but he went too far when he pretended to be Portuguese and attacked English ports. He was eventually captured by the English fleet and fatally wounded. ‘Henry Martin’ is a traditional Scottish song about Andrew Barton and his brothers.

We agree that spaghetti on deck isn't wanted We also hate wine-glass kites. But remember your manners, you don't have to shout To tell us these things are not right.

Of course, as the resident Pirate of Port Shelter, I could not be outdone by my fellow seamen, and thus, wrote the following ballad in support of crew everywhere.

We all make mistakes, they really are errors. We, as your crew, do our best. We'll grind, tail, tug and pull on our ropes But remember. You do the rest.
