FROM THE DUGOUT MARK HUDSON
WELCOME TO TODAY'S SOUTH
TYNESIDE DERBY AGAINST LOCAL NEIGHBOURS DUNSTON.
It was very disappointing on Saturday afternoon at Sheffield.
It's becoming a recurring thing against teams towards the bottom of the table - we slipped up to Carlton and Lincoln at home. It wasn't good enough - we couldn't get near Sheffield in the first half.
I think they were hungrier than us. They had something resting on the game but so did we, we're still not in those play-offs yet. They were getting first and second balls, and
deserved the first goal because they outran us. It wasn't just the back four - we defend as a team and I think our wide men aren't working hard enough at times, so our midfield have to move out to cover and it goes from there.
I thought we got our mojo back when we won against Pontefract, being hard to beat, but we were very poor on Saturday. Going forward, we didn't create a lot either a spoke a in the d room. We just stick to
We're still third in the table and you want to go into them play-offs with a bit of form. It's a massive game today against Dunston. They've got to come to us and win really, but we need to play well because we've not been consistent enough.
We'll play well then lose a couple - it's hard to put your finger on it but it's a bad time to have that inconsistency. It's a local derby today and the boys

It's good to be back from injury and getting some minutes in for the U23s. You can't replicate a game environment in training so it feels really nice to be back out there.
I got full first half on Wednesday night and an hour on Saturday, so I'm gradually building my fitness back up. The injury is still a bit stiff but that will hopefully ease off over time. I've been out for eight months now so I'm glad my leg feels alright.
I wasn't focusing about how I played on the ball,
it was more just getting a run out and getting back into the swing of things.
I got an assist on Wednesday from a free-kick and I had a chance quite early on which I probably would've scored a year ago. Like I say, I'm too bothered about that though because I'm just looking to get my sharpness back. For me now, I'll most likely continue to get minutes under my belt for the U23s and try to push back into the first team.
The lads are doing well at the moment and after
so long out, coming back in will be tough.
Playing for the U23s helps build my fitness and gives me match experience so when I am ready, I'll be there or thereabouts.
It's obviously a big month for the club, so hopefully I'm back and I'll try my best to play a part.
HELLO EVERYONE AND WELCOME

Goals from Josh Burns and Benni Ndlovu handed Sheffield the win on Saturday afternoon.
Hebburn struggled to get out of first gear in the opening stages, and the hosts almost scored instantly as Nathan Modest went through on goal but Shaun Newbrook saved.
On 14 minutes, Sheffield broke the deadlock when Burns headed a free-kick from the right past Newbrook at the back post. Ryan Cresswell’s side showed no signs of slowing down when Modest’s strike was blocked, before his powerful rebound was swatted away by Newbrook. Seconds later, Ndlovu showed skill in the box before forcing Newbrook
into an outstanding save at his front post.
Edd Hall was hardly challenged all afternoon in the Sheffield goal - Hebburn did manage to find a sight of goal on the 57 mark when Jake Hackett fizzed a low chance straight at the keeper from 20 yards. With five to go, Sheffield added a second as Ndlovu got onto the end of a long ball and slotted past Newbrook one-on-one. There was a late twist in the tale as Hebburn won a penalty and Amar Purewal converted in the sixth additional minute, but the referee immediately blew for full time.

PLAYER SPONSORS AN INTRODUCTION
BY DAVID COULTHARD
We take a look at our local rivals and opponents this afternoon, Dunston. Dunston were founded in 1975 as a works team known as Whickham Sports and have gone through various name changes in their 46-year history. They were renamed Dunston Mechanics in 1982 then Dunston Federation Brewery in 1987, before becoming Dunston Federation when the brewery dropped their sponsorship 20 years later. Their first season was in the Newcastle City Amateur League, however they quickly moved up to the Northern Amateur League, winning the double in 1977/78.
Their next stop was the
the Wearside League. Their time was hugely successful with league titles in 1989 and 1990 followed up by promotion to the Northern League in 1991. It took Dunston just two seasons to win the Division Two title and the club would then spend the next 26 years in Division One.
Perhaps the greatest moment in the club’s history came when they won the FA Vase at Wembley in 2012.
Dunston were promoted to the Pitching In Northern Premier League for the first time following a Northern League title triumph in 2018/19, when they finished 17 points clear of secondplaced Hebburn Town.

Dunston held champions Worksop to a 1-1 draw at the UTS Stadium on Saturday. Richard Coulson gave Dunston the lead after 12 minutes when a corner wasn't cleared, and he did well to wrestle the ball back, before firing home at the
near post past Harvey Giles. They held that lead until the midway point in the second period when the prolific Liam Hughes levelled for the visitors with a back post finish at the second attempt following Deegan
Atherton's cross. Neither side was
able to secure a late winner, despite Worksop ending the game with 10 men with Jack Broadhead receiving a straight red card with just over 10 minutes to play for a reckless tackle.
MEMORABLE MEETING
A late Kieren Aplin free-kick gave Hebburn their first win over Dunston since October 1994.
After an early Hornets chance, Lee Mason went through at the other end and forced a neat save from the legs of Mark Foden.
Hebburn then took the lead on seven minutes after some textbook build-up play on the right flank.
Skipper Dan Groves found himself in space and squared to Olly Martin at the back stick, poking past Liam Connell for the opener.
Chris Swailes' side found a perfect opportunity to respond on the 20 mark as Jack Elliott played the ball across the box, however Richard Coulson drove his effort past the post. Martin came inches away from grabbing his second for the hosts in the 54th minute, skimming the post with a 20-yard free-kick.
Michael Pearson and Mason created chances to equalise
27 DECEMBER 2021
for Dunston midway through the second period but neither could take advantage and equalise.
Aplin settled the game down for Hebburn on 73 minutes, rifling a pinpoint free-kick into the bottom right corner to make it 2-0.
Terry Galbraith rescued hope at the death for Dunston, firing a penalty past Foden with four minutes to go.
Aplin was then shown a second yellow card for Hebburn in the fourth additional minute for a rash challenge, but The Hornets stayed solid in the remaining seconds as Kevin Bolam's side secured a 2-1 victory.

Sixteen-year-old Ryan Hardie has scored consecutive hat-tricks for the U23s in the last week.
Gary Henry's side, which included first-teamer Will McCamley in his recovery from a long-term injury, played twice at home in league action.
On Wednesday night, the U23s welcomed promotionchasing Gosforth Bohemians and went 1-0 up following a scramble from McCamley's free-kick. Then in the second half, Hardie bagged three alongside a goal from substitute Owen Lovely. “It was excellent victory against a very good team,” commented manager Henry on the 5-0 win.
“We set up early to play good, quick football and we created a decent chance when we got Will down the right side - his shot was parried by the keeper and
we couldn’t get to the rebound.
“The lads played some very good football in the first half and at half-time we asked them to move ball quicker from side to side to stretch the opposition, reducing the touches we had on the ball.
“The lads responded excellently and all worked tirelessly for each other, putting the work in.
“It was pleasing to get another clean sheet - I thought Kian [DevlinJohnson] was excellent again at the back and Andy Marley alongside him was solid as well.”
At the weekend, the U23s played Bedlington and secured a narrow 3-2 victory, with Hardie again scoring a hat-trick.
