FROM THE DUGOUT

DANIEL MOORE

HAPPY NON-LEAGUE DAY AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S FIXTURE AGAINST LINCOLN UNITED.

All that matters in football matches is the result.

Fair play to Shildon on Tuesday - they had several chances and they probably should've won the game. But it's about taking those chances and winning the game, especially at this stage of this season. In the first half, we didn't get going but the second half was better. It took a goal for us to click into gear but once that went in, we could've had a few.

We spoke at

half-time about putting balls into the box because we got into some great situations down the flanks but we kept turning the crosses down.

James Harrison came on and his first cross made things happen - it bobbled up and thankfully it went in.

Shaun Newbrook was outstanding and that's why we brought him to the club.

I thought the penalty was a bit harsh b moved and go points. We're b finding

win football matches which is really pleasing to see.

Lincoln are another team fighting against relegation so it'll be another battle this afternoon. Anyone that's not watched Hebburn or non-league football before, you're coming to watch a bunch of lads that give everything for each other and the badge to achieve success.

Hopefully we can get a good crowd

ON THE PITCH AMAR PUREWAL

TO THE GREEN ENERGY SPORTS

GROUND FOR TODAY'S GAME.

It was important to win on Tuesday night away to Shildon. After losing on Saturday at Long Eaton, we needed to get back on track because that was our game in hand. It wasn't the best performance but it's three points by any means necessary. We got told off at half-time but the second half was a lot better from us. There will be games like that, especially with

that kind of pitch, so we were over the moon to come away with the win. I'm playing and playing well - I wasn't too concerned about not scoring for a while.

Chances will come and I got one on Tuesday, so I was happy to put it away.

We spoke about getting down the sides of them and it was the only chance I got all game.

I took a touch ahead of myself

and smashed it with my left foot across the keeper like you're told to do when you're youngerthankfully it went in. We need three points again today. Lincoln rolled us over at their place - we had a few injuries at the time and were going through a bad phase.

It'd be nice to see a big crowd and hopefully we can get that win.

HELLO EVERYONE, WELCOME BACK

NOTICEBOARD

Young goalkeeper Matty Bateman has joined Seaham Red Star on dual registration terms.

The 19-year-old, who moved to Hebburn in February, joins the Northern League Division One side and could make his debut on Tuesday night.

Former Hebburn and current Seaham keeper Andrew Jennison is set to miss several upcoming fixtures, allowing Bateman to get game time in the league below.

Bateman joins Dylan Archer (Sunderland West End), Daniel Field (Tow Law Town) and Kieran Hunter (Chester-le-Street Town) in signing for a Northern League outfit on a dual registration deal. The move enables players to earn match experience elsewhere, while still being available to train and play

for Hebburn.

In other squad news, leftback Kieran Charlton is set to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury picked up in training. The club sends our best wishes to Kieran in his recovery and hope to see him on the pitch soon.

Jack Donaghy and Will McCamley are set to return from their long-term injuries over the next month.

Ex-Shildon striker Amar

Purewal scored a late winner at his former home on Tuesday night.

The Hebburn squad included almost 1,000 Shildon appearances between them - with manager Daniel Moore playing over 500 times at The Railwaymen.

Moore’s side started well as Liam Murray controlled a high ball before pinging a shot into Sunderland loanee Harrison Bond from range. However, the rest of the first half was all Shildon.

Shaun Newbrook, who played over 100 games for Shildon, saved efforts from the likes of Jon Weirs, Chay Liddle and Aidan Heywood. Sean Reid also kept Hebburn in it, with a diving header as Ben Dibb-Fuller tried to

chip into an empty net. Shildon broke the deadlock on 48 minutes through a Billy Greulich-Smith penalty after Newbrook committed a foul.

Greulich-Smith would go onto net another after the hour, but the linesman had his flag up for the home side. The introduction of James Harrison sparked life into The Hornets, and the winger’s driven cross on 66 minutes was turned into the Shildon net by their own captain Heywood. With 76 on the clock, Purewal got the winner as the forward got on the end of Joe Walton's lofted pass and smashed an effort past Bond at a tight angle.

AN INTRODUCTION

PLAYER SPONSORS

We take a look inside this afternoon's opposition, Lincoln United. The club were formed as Lincoln Amateurs in 1938, but due to World War Two couldn’t join a league until 1946, when they entered the Lincolnshire League. The Whites briefly moved into the Lincoln League but returned to the Lincolnshire League once finances improved. This coincided with a name change to Lincoln United in a early 1950s, a move that was necessary due to signing a paid player, Ray Bean from Nottingham Forest.

They won their first league title in the 1963/64 campaign and have won several divisional titles since during their spells in the Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, NCEL and Central

Midlands Leagues. Their most successful

era was during the 1990s when they secured three promotions in four seasons, and also reached the FA Cup first round on two occasions, losing to Huddersfield Town and Walsall.

In the 2016/17 season, they won the Lincolnshire Senior Cup for the only time in their history. They appointed current manager Chris Funnell in May 2022 after a brief spell as interim boss last season. Lincoln, who finished 16th last campaign, currently sit 17th in the Pitching In Northern Premier League East Division having lost their last four games by one-goal margins.

LAST MATCH

Lincoln United suffered a home defeat to Shildon, their fourth loss in a row, after substitute Alex Hutchinson gave The Railwaymen all three points deep into injury time at Ashby Avenue. The game was into the final 15 minutes before the visitors

opened the scoring when Michael Sweet headed home from close range after Vinnie Steels volleyed Billy Greulich-Smith’s cross back across the six-yard box. Lincoln looked like they’d rescued a point in the 89th minute when standin skipper Callum

Foster headed home at the back stick from a corner, but they would be denied four minutes later when Steels found Hutchinson in the area and the latter controlled, and then curled his effort beyond Jack Steggles in the Lincoln goal.

Lincoln s afternoon was made worse on 67 minutes as Josh Nichol took down last-man Dylan Archer, with the referee showing a red card to the defender. It should've been 3-0 with

PLAYER SPONSORS DEVITT ON NON-LEAGUE DAY

Tom Devitt says the squad wants to repay everyone who comes through the gate this afternoon.

The defender helped Hebburn to a 2-1 away victory on Tuesday night away to Shildon. The Hornets went behind through a penalty after the interval, but an Aidan Heywood own goal and Amar Purewal strike won the game for Hebburn.

“The result was the main thing,” stated Devitt.

“I know the gaffer touched on it after the game - the performances are what they are, but it’s about winning by any means necessary. “It was a must-win for us and we needed those three points.

“We wanted to put Saturday’s defeat at Long Eaton to bed, but we also needed to win for our own

sake because it was our game in hand.

“Shildon had a few chances in the first half because we weren’t at our best but going in at half-time, we were confident with the players we have up top.

“Of course Shildon could’ve been two or three goals up, but we managed to hold on and we know we’re capable of scoring in any game.”

Devitt, who has largely been deployed at full-back over recent weeks, returned to the heart of defence following a three-game suspension.

“It’s never nice watching on the sides,” he commented.

“It was hard and I was on the edge of my seat - you can’t do much but cheer the lads on.

“I’ve got full faith in the gaffer and whatever team he selects - he decided to put me straight back in on Tuesday and thankfully we repaid him with the three points.

“I haven’t properly played with Reidy [Sean Reid] at centre-back yet, we were together for the Grimsby Borough defeat but with so many changes it didn’t go to plan.

“Then we played together against Seaham but it didn’t last long because of the red card, so it really nice to have that 90 minutes together.

“I have full confidence I can play at centre-back and right-back so it’s up to where the gaffer needs me.

“The gaffer and Reidy were

31

get the win.”

Hebburn remain in second place in the Pitching In Northern Premier League East Division, with Tuesday’s win taking them four points above Stockton Town. However, Devitt admits he isn’t focusing on the table as The Hornets enter the final month of the season.

“At this moment in time the league table is irrelevant for me,” he said.

“I want to take it one game at a time because if you look ahead, you’ll stumble at the first hurdle.

“The league table doesn’t come into play - we’ll do what we can on the pitch and wherever we finish, hopefully we can be proud of it.”

A number of travelling supporters made their voices heard on Tuesday night at Dean Street, much like at Long Eaton last weekend.

Devitt was quick to thank those who put the miles in

and supported the team over the last week.

“We were delighted to get the win for them on Tuesday,” he stated.

“We always say our support is unrivalled because they travel quite far just to get behind us - that’s a massive reason why we’ve done so well away from home.

“Whether they’re coming to a local one like Shildon or trek like Long Eaton, they play a massive part and we’re really thankful for them.”

Today is Non-League Day; an event which coincides with the international break, providing an opportunity to supporters of professional

clubs to get behind their local non-league side.

Hebburn welcome Lincoln United to The Green Energy Sports Ground, and the club would love to break this season’s attendance record.

“We’d love to see a big crowd,” Devitt said.

“We’re a bunch of lads who want to do their best for the club and the area - we do that by giving 110% on a Saturday afternoon.

“We’re in a really important stage of the season so every single person that comes through the door, we’re grateful for and we want to repay them.

“We’ll do our best to give them a good day out by

getting a win and hopefully a lot of them will come back."

Lincoln beat Hebburn back in November but have recently slipped into the relegation play-off zone after a run of defeats.

“It’ll be a tough game,” added Devitt.

“They’re towards the bottom of the table so, a bit like ourselves at the other end, they’re fighting for every point.

“There aren’t any easy games in this league so it’s up to ourselves to turn up and prepare mentally.

“If we do what we do well, fingers crossed the result will take care of itself.”

Hebburn Town U23s travel to West Moor & Jesmond at 2:30pm this afternoon in league action.

Gary Henry's side weren't in action last weekend as their home game against North Shields Athletic was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Their last outing was a 1-0 victory away to league leaders, Gosforth Bohemians.

New signing Jimmy Lone stayed strong in the Hebburn goal to grab a clean sheet and Man of the Match award, while forward Robbie Gateshill scored the winner from a penalty on 82 minutes.

“It was a massive response from recent weeks,” reflected manager Henry.

“It was a brilliant performance and it shows what we can producehopefully it’s a kickstart for the remaining 13 games.

“I spoke before the game about being positive and self belief, but most importantly working as a group.

"Every single player grafted for the team and at times done running for each other which was really pleasing to see."

U23s captain Andy Marley made his 100th appearance for the club during the game - the first ever player to hit that milestone since the side's formation.

Hebburn Town U23s' next home game takes place on Wednesday, April 5 against Gosforth Bohemians at The Green Energy Sports Ground (6pm kick-off).

Entry is free and the bar will be open - come along and cheer the lads on!
