FROM THE DUGOUT

DANIEL MOORE

GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME

TO TODAY'S LEAGUE FIXTURE AT HOME TO CONSETT.

We couldn't play any sort of football on Carlton's pitch last week.

In the first half, we played some really good stuff but it took us quite a few touches to get the ball under control. It was a solid, professional away performance overall. It was about which side did the basics better. We worked hard and had some great individual performances. The first thing we had to do was match Carlton because they're in a relegation battle, and with our work rate, we did that.

I was delighted to score - every player loves to get a goal.

I've said it a lot during the season, we should be doing more in those areas from corners so it was nice to get a goal from it.

You can't beat playing but it's whether my body can stand it. The lads have been outstanding so I haven't had to play - I was only going to through necessity. The only defensive change eight-g winnin coming Donagh helps w

continuity, and I've enjoyed playing with the lads.

They're the main thing though - if I can help the lads on or off the pitch I'll do it.

Consett are a decent side - we're going to have to be on top of our game today but we have to be playing with confidence at the minute as well. We lost that game against Grimsby Borough but that's only one defeat in our last 12 games, we've been in great form.

ON THE PITCH ROBBIE SPENCE

TO THE GREEN ENERGY SPORTS

GROUND TODAY.

We've got to keep ticking games off and getting three points. That's by any means necessary. Going away from home last weekend on a difficult pitch, we dealt with it really well and Carlton never looked like scoring. It was always going to be a scrappy game since they're fighting against relegation but we done our job well. We finished our chances when they came along, and we could've had another one or two with a bit more quality.

It was a strange game for me - I didn't get booked and I scored. I got two goals in the first few games of the season and not scored since so it was a long time coming personally. Nobody got injured or suspended as well which is good because we have had some issues recently. We know a lot about Consett. Obviously we played against them at Wembley but both squads have changed quite a bit since. They're a good footballing side and there are no easy games in this

league, but if we apply ourselves like we did last week then I'm sure we'll get three points. We really appreciate everyone who came down to Carlton with us because it was a long journey. It's nice to have a few home fixtures now - the support goes a long way to the lads so hopefully we can get some more points on the board.

HELLO EVERYONE, WELCOME BACK

Full information for our Durham Challenge Cup Final has now been announced.

Hebburn Town will face Spennymoor Town on Wednesday, May 3 at at the Stadium of Light (7:30pm kick-off).

Ticketing details will be confirmed in due course. The last final played at the Stadium of Light saw our current manager, Daniel Moore, lift the trophy in 2019 as Shildon beat South Shields.

Durham County FA CEO, John Topping commented:

“The Durham County FA has a strong partnership with our senior club, Sunderland AFC, with both organisations helping each other provide development and opportunities to many.

“We are excited by the opportunities that lie ahead for football in our county as we work together more and

more closely.

“We are absolutely delighted that Sunderland AFC have agreed to host the Final once again. This further endorses the club’s commitment to grassroots football and the wider community.

“To play at such an iconic venue is the dream of all players outside of the professional game and is a massive boost for the County FA and the competition.”

Hebburn claimed a 2-0 away victory over Carlton last week with goals from Daniel Moore and Robbie Spence.

Kick-off was delayed due to traffic issues with Hebburn, however it was Carlton who suffered most before the game as goalkeeper Mike Emery went down in the warm-up.

The visitors break the deadlock on the half-hour as Jake Hackett’s corner was met by a free Moore at the back post, who made no mistake in heading low into the net.

Carlton tried to respond before the break when Lawrence Stewart whipped a ball in which rebounded to Kyle Tomlin, who headed into Shaun Newbrook’s grip. Tomlin then hit the side

netting from a header 10 minutes into the second half after the hosts worked possession down the left flank.

At the other end, Liam Henderson won a free-kick which Olly Martin drove low towards the bottom corner but stand-in keeper Richard Stainsby stopped well.

Spence grabbed Hebburn’s second after the hour when Henderson crossed into the midfielder at the front post, who bundled it past Stainsby.

Remello Nangle had the best chance for the hosts to pull one back in the remaining minutes, but the substitute hit wide in a promising position.

Consett make the short journey to South Tyneside this afternoon.

They were founded as Consett Celtic in 1899 and prior to rebranding played in the Northern Alliance League, before becoming founder members of the North Eastern League Division Two in 1926. The Steelmen then transferred back to the Northern Alliance in 1935, but returned to the North Eastern League in 1937 where they were league champions in 1940. After World War II, Consett applied to join the Football League, but no vote was held, and they continued until the league disbanded in 1958.

They then spent two seasons in the Midland League before becoming founder members of the

Northern Counties League in 1960.

Consett joined the Wearside League in 1964, before joining the Northern League in 1970 where they moved between the two divisions for over 50 years. The seven-time winners of the Durham Challenge Cup moved to their current ground, Belle View Stadium in 2013, after 63 years at Belle Vue Park.

Consett played at Wembley for the 2020 FA Vase Final, losing 3-2 to Hebburn Town. Last season, Consett were promoted to step four for the first time in their history, beating Histon in the Interstep Playoff Final after finishing as Northern League runners-up to North Shields.

Consett were made to settle for a point on the road, following a goalless draw at bottom placed Tadcaster Albion on Wednesday night.

Former Hebburn shot-stopper Mark Foden had a relatively quiet night in the visitors'

goal, whilst opposite number Josh Mazfari also had little to do. In difficult wet conditions, Nathan Greenwood and Danny Barlow each managed a first half effort on target for Consett, whilst Nathan Dyer and Jack Johnson both went close for

Tadcaster in the second period. With time running out, Tadcaster almost secured the three points, but Ben Milburn's last ditch clearance kept Consett's clean sheet intact. The result leaves Consett 10th in the table.

PLAYER SPONSORSLOOKBACK WITH HARRIS

It's been a whirlwind year for first-team coach, Simon Harris, since joining the club.

"I've progressed massively," he explained.

"I've covered a few different roles at the club and they've been greatly beneficial to my development - some of them I definitely wasn't expecting like that caretaker role but I've 100% learnt a lot.

"I've come a long way in

multiple aspects whether that be dealing with players, tactical parts of the game or working with other coaches."

The former Gosforth Bohemians manager put his name forward in October 2021 to join Kevin Bolam's backroom team.

Fast forward to March 4, one year today, and Harris was asked to step up as caretaker boss alongside

goalkeeping coach Chris Errington upon Bolam's departure. Harris admits that was a challenging proposition, but one he ultimately couldn't turn down.

"It was a tough decision to be honest and it wasn't something I was expecting," he stated.

"It was difficult, but I didn't have to think long about it because it was a really good opportunity at the end of the day.

"For one, it was an honour to be asked by the club to take over but it also gave me a platform to learn and grow. "It's such a prestigious role and looking back now, I wouldn't change my decision because we done really well."

Harris and Errington's reign was relatively successful, starting with a 4-1 away victory at Lincoln United. The Hornets then stuck three past Worksop Town, and also celebrated late

wins against Yorkshire Amateur and Ossett United. But one thing that Harris cherished most from the experience was the atmosphere he helped construct at the club.

"We got some excellent results," he recalled.

"Straight off the bounce, we got three wins in a row before getting a brilliant point away to Marske who were flying at the time.

"I reflect on it fondly - we got some bad results as well which were important experiences and I learnt more from them than the wins.

"When I came in, there were some key things I wanted to change and they were implemented from the first training session. "We kept everyone close together - that wasn't just the players, that included the supporters, volunteers washing the kit, the media lads, the secretaries and the physio.

"Everyone played their part and that's the main thing I was proud of because it was a difficult season for the club."

At the end of the campaign, Daniel Moore was appointed as first-team manager, bringing Mark Hudson and Carl Morris with him from Shildon.

Harris remained at The Green Energy Sports Ground

to form a four-man backroom team, reverting to his former role of first-team coach.

Ten months later and Harris is still keen to learn as much as possible from those new faces around him.

"They've been fantastic with me," he said.

"I try to learn from them everyday - they're all experienced in the game but they've also got great attitudes.

"I'm enjoying it as well - it's a positive environment to be in, especially when we're winning games.

"There's a lot of focus on mentality in that dressing room - there's a real desire to win and no team will have an easy game against us.

"It's impressive to see because it's working, and I'll take a lot away from that.

"We had a young group last year but several senior players have come in and that's changed the dynamic of the squad, which shows in

games and training sessions.

"They refuse to let anything slip and they've raised the standards of the players around them."

Moore's side could jump to second in the table this afternoon, as Hebburn welcome local rivals Consett at 3pm.

Harris knows the visitors well having spent the 2014/15 season at Belle View as a coach.

"I enjoyed my time at Consett," he added.

"It's a lovely club who allowed me to come onboard at the start of my coaching journey when I was really young.

"They actually gave me the

opportunity to have one game in the caretaker role when they were in the process of changing managers.

"It was against North Shields, the season they won the FA Vase, and we managed to get a positive result.

"I'm looking forward to facing them on Saturdaywe're doing really well at the minute and it's coming to the business end of the season.

"The fans have been tremendous since I've been at Hebburn and we've got a run of home games now so fingers crossed we can get more people through the gate."

Our U23s were knocked out their final cup competition last week to Newcastle Independent Cabrito.

Gary Henry's side played on the main pitch at The Green Energy Sports Ground last Friday night in the Bill Gardner Cup Round of 16, The opener came three minutes before the break for Hebburn as Harry Loughlin broke on the left flank before squaring to John Murray to blast home at close-range.

Despite not challenging Andy Hunter all game, Independent equalised on the 90 mark when Tyler Spendiff chipped the keeper with a header. Frustration turned to jubilation for Hebburn in the 93rd minute as Kian Devlin-Johnson went down in the box and Robbie Gateshill converted the penalty. But with the final touch of

the game, Cabrito equalised as a corner was nodded off the woodwork before Liam Metcalfe finished it. Both teams missed one penalty each before Hebburn's Dom Solman hooked over to exit the cup. "We threw it away three times," said manager Henry.

"We conceded a silly goal when we were 1-0 up, and then switched off for the last kick of the game.

"You could see it coming from the sidelines because we went a lot deepercredit to the opposition because they battled with nine men in injury time.

"It's a hard one to take - we could've won it on penalties but we missed with our fifth pen to take it to sudden death and hit another over the bar.

"It was really disappointing to come away without the victory."
