GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME

TO TODAY'S HOME FIXTURE AGAINST OSSETT UNITED.

We weren't at the races against Grimsby and got beat by the better side. The lads have been outstanding so I don't want to dig them out, but they have to be better on the day. Only a couple of players came out with any creditShaun [Newbrook] and the midfield. Other than that, we weren't good enough individually.

Grimsby looked sharper on the ball and we didn't win a single first or second ball. That's ultimately where football matches are won and we didn't do

that so Grimsby deserved the three points. A lot of lads were missing but for the players we had out there, they have to be better.

Jack Donaghy is a massive loss for ushe was great alongside Sean Reid and you could see the impact his absence had.

It was the same as Will McCamley - a freak incident in training without any contact where he's broken a bone. It's something for us to deal with - for the nex we hav move o The lad ready t the side

their chance.

I watched Ossett at Stockton a few weeks ago. They put balls in the box and look to create chancesthey're a direct side so it'll be a tough test today.

I want a reactionearlier in the season we had a poor spell after the Long Eaton defeat so it's important we react quickly and write the Grimsby game off. Every bit of support helps and we'll need the fans over the next

CLUB AND BUZZING TO GET IT

OVER THE LINE.

Last Saturday couldn't have gone much worse for me personally. It was a poor performance and I came off injured. The lads were on a good run of form and are high up in the league tableit's a good club and it was an easy decision to join.

I know Joe Walton and I spoke to him first before talking to the gaffer, and he couldn't speak highly enough of the club. I've played with Arron Thompson before and all the lads have been spot on with me. It's a step up in leagues from

playing at Sunderland RCAit's a challenge but one I'm looking forward to and think I'm more than capable of. I'm devastated after last week's result. We were 3-0 down at half-time and it wasn't looking great.

I felt a tweak in my hernia midway through the first half but decided to play on. Then in the second half when I was stretching for the ball, my hamstring pulled.

I'm hoping it'll only be a few weeks I'm out for because I want to get there and show what

I can do.

First and foremost, I'd describe myself as a defender. I'm an energetic left-back but I can also play on the right or in the middle.

My main job on the pitch is to keep clean sheetslooking at the firepower in this squad then if we can defend well, we'll win a lot of games. We all know we're after promotion so I want to get fit as quickly as possible to help the lads achieve that.

I'M DELIGHTED TO SIGN FOR THIS

Hebburn Town are pleased to announce the signing of Matty Bateman from Shildon.

The 19-year-old goalkeeper arrives after making 53 appearances for Shildon, having first joined The Railwaymen at the age of 16.

Bateman, who also earned experience on loan with Redcar Athletic, has played against Hebburn during the last two seasons. He worked with shotstopper Shaun Newbrook and goalkeeping coach Carl Morris last year at Dean Street, and will be eligible to feature this afternoon against Ossett United.

“I’ve worked with him for two years and he’s the best in the area for his age,” stated Morris.

“He’s had a rough time recently so we want to develop him by sending him out on loan before he

pushes Shaun and Andy [Coulson].

“Matty’s ambitious and a really good lad - he knows all the keepers already so he’s slotted straight in.

“We’ve got a strong group of goalkeepers - Kieran Hunter is flying at the minute in the Northern League and we’re checking on him regularly, and we’ll do the same for Matty.”

Goal-hungry Grimsby Borough claimed an impressive win at Hebburn last weekend.

The opener came on the halfhour as Jack Debnam met a corner on the volley, and Brody Robertson was there to divert it into the net from close-range.

Hebburn nearly equalised from a corner of their own when Hackett's delivery was attacked by Murray and Liam Henderson but Liam Higton managed to react on the line. Robertson then turned provider for Grimsby as he set left-back Luis Adlard on 37 minutes, who drove a shot past Shaun Newbrook to make it 2-0.

Moments later, Boro made it three when Robertson's layoff allowed Reece York to

neatly fire a shot into the bottom left corner from 20 yards. Matters were made worse for Hebburn as Joe Walton went off with a hamstring injury, and debutant Kieran Charlton was also forced to make way after half-time with a similar problem. That came with controversy as the injured Charlton kept the visitors onside and Boro showed no remorse as Robertson struck past Newbrook to make it 4-0. Shot-stopper Newbrook made a brilliant double save on the 90 mark, parrying Tyler Edwards' chance at the front post before claiming Robertson's rebound.

AN INTRODUCTION

PLAYER SPONSORS

We recap the history of Ossett and take a look at the club's recent form. Ossett United were founded in 2018 following the merger of Ossett Albion and Ossett Town. Due to the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons being curtailed, Ossett have only completed two full seasons in their new form. Since the previous two clubs, that had co-existed after the second world war, both played their football at step four United were able to begin life in the Pitching In Northern Premier League. They continue to use Ingfield Stadium, former home of Ossett Town, as their home ground although they did use Albion’s Dimple Wells ground for their ladies and academy sides for a couple of seasons, before bringing

the whole club under one roof in 2020.

In 2019, they won the new club’s first piece of silverware when they beat Guiseley 2-1 to win the West Riding County Cup.

Former Belper Town boss Grant Black was appointed manager in October following Jas Coliver's sacking, with his final game being the Hebburn defeat. Ossett finished ninth last campaign and currently sit 11th in the table, having enjoyed a four-game unbeaten run. Black has only lost two of his 14 league games in charge - those coming to the hands of Worksop Town and Dunston.

After three straight wins, Ossett United were made to settle for a draw on home soil last weekend, as Shildon came from behind to rescue a point at Ingfield Stadium.

Ossett took the lead three minutes before the break when Chris Dawson

played a neat onetwo before being tripped in the area by Kurt Matthews, and Craig Nelthorpe stepped up to fire the spot kick into the top corner, beyond reach of Harrison Bond. The visitors drew level on 72, when Ben Reay fired his right-footed effort

low into the bottom corner from just inside the area, after some good persistence by Matthews down the left-hand side.

Ossett have also defeated Bridlington, Grimsby Borough and Tadcaster in recent weeks.

THE STORY SO FAR

Seaham Red Star travel to Hebburn on Tuesday night for a place in the Durham Challenge Cup Final.

Seaham, who sit 15th in Northern League Division One, started their Challenge Cup campaign with a 5-0 demolishing at home to

FC Hartlepool. Red Star then came from behind to edge Tow Law Town in the second round, with goals from Daniel Sayer and Craig Hennis. Their quarter-final came days before Christmas as Sayer opened the scoring early at home to Newton Aycliffe.

The visitors levelled but Hennis scored in the second half to send Mark Collingwood's side into the final four. While Hebburn have lifted the trophy twice, Seaham just have one Challenge Cup in their trophy cabinet from 1980.

Hebburn's route to the semi-final get underway with a 2-0 win away to Horden CW.

The Northern League Division Two side held The Hornets until half-time, but Olly Martin's penalty and Liam Murray's strike sent Daniel Moore's side through. In the following round, Hebburn face South Tyneside neighbours Jarrow at home.

The Hornets dominated but couldn't find a way past the goalkeeper inside the 90 minutes, taking it to penalties.

Heroics from Shaun Newbrook meant Hebburn got through unscathed.

The quarter-final took a while to be played due weather-related postponements, but Hebburn eventually travelled to Whickham last month.

Chances were largely at a premium but Murray was tripped in the first half, allowing Martin to drive home a penalty.

Whickham were reduced to 10 following Kaleb Young's challenge on Murray, and

PLAYER SPONSORSNEWBROOK'S PREVIEW

Shot-stopper Shaun Newbrook explains Hebburn need a reaction this weekend.

The Hornets, who suffered several injuries and suspensions, were put to the sword last Saturday against Grimsby Borough.

“It was a really bad day,” Newbrook assessed.

“Nothing clicked - it was a bad performance all around with lads in unfamiliar

positions.

“We didn’t just have one or two lads missing - it was four or five so it was always going to be a struggle.

“We’ve kept a lot of clean sheets recently and proved hard to beat but everything that could’ve went wrong, went wrong.”

The Hornets received a boost through the week as young goalkeeper Matty Bateman put pen to paper

at The Green Energy Sports Ground.

Newbrook previously worked with Bateman in the goalkeeping department at Shildon and hailed the youngster's ability upon the pair's reunion.

“It’s really good to see him,” Newbrook explained.

“He’s a very good player and probably the best keeper in the area for his age.

“His distribution is unbelievable and he’s confident in his own abilityhe trains hard and plays well.

“I think he’s playing at a higher level than most keepers his age and he’s doing really well.

“Training is competitive with all the keepers including Andy [Coulson] and Kieran [Hunter] - we all get on but we all want to play at the end of the day.

“If you’ve got no competition then you’ll get complacentperformance levels drop because you’re not going to

lose your place.

“We’ve got several good keepers so they push me to stay at the top of my game and perform well.”

Hebburn face Ossett United at home this afternoon and Newbrook reveals the side are preparing for a battle.

“I think it’ll be a hard game,” previewed Newbrook.

“It’ll be a battle and a physical game but we need to bounce back.

“We need to react quickly and put that Grimsby defeat behind us.”

The Hornets then welcome Seaham Red Star in the Durham Challenge Cup

semi-final on Tuesday night (7:30pm kick-off).

Newbrook played for Mark Collingwood's outfit for five years and enjoyed success in winning the Northern League Division Two title.

“It was where I first started playing Northern League,” he recalled.

“I played around 250 games there over five years - it was a great time and we had a very good side.

“We won the second division of the Northern League then quite confidently stayed up.

“We had the likes of Lewis Wing there [now at Wycombe Wanderers] so we had an excellent squad.

“Playing

good because he’s one of my best friends outside of football anyway.

“Since I left Seaham, I’ve only faced them two or three times so I’m looking forward to it.

“It’ll be interesting coming up against Colly rather than

being on the other side and playing for him.

“Daryll [Donnelly] is still playing there now and their committee was always good with me so it should be a good game.”

Finally, Newbrook rallied the supporters ahead of the two home fixtures this week.

“The support is very big to us,” he said.

“I think everyone who comes along enjoys themselveswe’ve played some good football other than the Grimsby game.

“We need to win more games at home and by doing that, we’ll get more people through the door.

“The next two games are massive and hopefully we can travel to Carlton full of momentum.”

U23s captain Andy Marley was delighted to secure a hard-fought win away to promotion favourites.

Gary Henry's side claimed an impressive victory against title favourites Stobswood Welfare last weekend.

The hosts were third in the table - four points from top spot with seven games in hand.

They beat Hebburn 6-2 earlier in the campaign and hadn't lost a league game since the opening day of the season. However, a spirited display from The Hornets meant Henry's men came away with a 2-1 win on the road.

"It was our performance of the season so far," claimed skipper Marley.

"Every single player played out of their skin against a top side in Stobswood.

"The win was massive against a side that doesn’t

drop many points and who are favourites to win the league title.

"We can now push on from that performance, start climbing up the table and look to get promoted at the end of the season."

Marley was named Man of the Match for his strong performance in the backline, playing alongside Kyle Oxley.

Hebburn went 2-0 up in the first half after goals from Jack Robertson and Robbie Gateshill, leaving the defense to fight out the second period and confirm the win.

Next up the U23s travel to Rothbury today, who sit a point above Hebburn having played an extra game.

The Hornets claimed a 4-1 win against them back in October following a Robertson hat-trick.
