WELCOME

TO THE GREEN ENERGY

SPORTS GROUND FOR TODAY'S FIXTURE AGAINST BRIDLINGTON.

Whickham were the better side over the 90 minutes on Tuesday night. Our performance wasn't great, though Shaun Newbrook didn't have too much to do. They were a decent side but when they went down to 10 men, we switched on that bit extra and got down the flanks, which is where our goal came from.

In cup games, you can be the worst team on the day and still go through.

That's all that matters, we're through to the semi-final.

We've got to take confidence from it - it's five wins on the bounce, and at any level of football that's decent going.

Sean Reid has been playing through injury recently and Joe Walton took a knock last weekthey're two influential players for us. We decided to rest them and, despite taking two players out of the spine of our team, the lads responded well to it and I'm pleased we got through. We'll ha better a Seaham but we pluggin looking

match.

It’s a tough game today against Bridlington. They are a team who can beat anyone in our division - they were one of the first teams to take points off Worksop. They’re a very good side and were tough to play against in December - that game was the start of this winning run so it’ll be

interesting to see how we’ve progressed. We’ve got to dig

GROUND FOR TODAY'S GAME.

It wasn't the best game on Tuesday against Whickhamwe didn't play too well. With it being a cup game, all we were focused on was the result. The main thing was getting through to the semi-final, where we'll hopefully play much better and get through again. It was 50/50 before they went down to 10 men, but we let them back into it during the second half which made it a

bit harder. It was good to be back personally. Since we only train twice a week, I've been doing a bit of work by myself to keep sharp and fit. Nothing replicates match sharpness, so it was nice to gradually get back into it.

A clean sheet is always niceShaun Newbrook didn't have much to do during the game. As a back four, we played have th work o Everyon do well

Durham Challenge Cup and the manager has made that clear. It'll be a different game against Bridlington today - they'll have a bit more quality and want to put us under pressure. We'll have to raise our levels and get back to our best this afternoon.

GOOD AFTERNOON - WELCOME BACK

Hebburn Town are delighted to announce a young duo have signed 28day work experience loans.

The pair join from Middlesbrough U21s, having recently returned to action after suffering long-term injuries.

Guisborough-born Alfie Doherty (left) is a central midfielder who has been with Boro for the last 12 years.

Nathan Simpson (right) can play across both flanks and also earned experience at youth level for England. They will be eligible to make their senior debuts this afternoon against Bridlington.

"They're good players," said first-team manager Daniel Moore.

"I know Mark Tinkler who manages the U21s, and he wouldn't send them here unless they'd develop.

"We've got so many games

over the next month and they'll bring some fresh legs to the team.

"It'll give the squad a lift because they're two talented young lads who'll only improve us going forward."

Olly Martin's penalty proved to be Hebburn's winning ticket to the Durham Challenge Cup semi-final.

In the sixth minute, Liam Murray did well down the right edge of the area, but his ball across the face of goal just evaded his teammates. After a period of relatively little goalmouth action, a big moment in the game arrived on 33, as Whickham's Kaleb Young received his marching orders following a late challenge on Murray. It wasn’t long before the visitors took advantage of the extra man, as Murray was brought down in the area by Dom Agnew, and Martin stepped up to smash home a 37th minute penalty. On 41, Murray was down in the area again but despite

his appeals, referee Graeme Hopper waved it away.

On the hour, Martin tried his luck with Nathan Harker almost palming into his own net following a one-handed stop, then Robbie Spence forced the shot-stopper into another save moments later with a low effort.

In stoppage time, Whickham had a great chance to level through Ethan Page, with Shaun Newbrook turning the ball behind with his legs at the near post. The narrow victory on Tuesday means Hebburn will host Seaham Red Star for a place in the Durham Challenge Cup Final, while Dunston face Spennymoor Town.

AN INTRODUCTION

PLAYER SPONSORS

We delve into the history of this afternoon's visitors, Bridlington Town. Bridlington were formed in 1918 under the guise of Bridlington Central United. Their golden era was undoubtedly in the 1950s, when they won five consecutive league titles and two East Riding Senior Cups, before joining the Yorkshire League in 1959. They were promoted to Division One at the first attempt after finishing as runners up and reached the FA Cup first round the season after. The trophies continued throughout the 1960s with three League Cups and an East Riding Senior Cup added to the collection. They became founder members of the NCEL when the Yorkshire and Midlands Leagues merged.

In 1987, they lost an FA Vase Final replay

although they lifted it in 1993 and were also promoted to the NPL Premier Division before folding a year later. That was not the end of the story however as local pub side The Greyhound secured the lease for Queensgate, changed their name to Bridlington Town AFC and were straight back in business.

After three successive promotions, Brid regained their NPL Premier Division status but were soon relegated back to the NCEL. Town continued to play in the NCEL until they were promoted to the Pitching In Northern Premier League based on points per game.

Bridlington Town became the first side to take points off Worksop Town since they also drew the reverse fixture back in August, but they were moments away from taking the victory at Sandy Lane.

Bridlington took the lead after 36

minutes through Andrew Norfolk’s long-range effort, but Hamza Bencherif equalised on the stroke of halftime when he met a corner from the left. Norfolk then turned provided when his ball set Ali Aydemir away and he was able to finish low into the net on 68

to regain the visitors’ lead. It was Worksop who had the final say in stoppage time when Josh Wilde bundled the ball home, following a free-kick that couldn’t be cleared by the Bridlington defence, making it 2-2.

Goals from Olly Martin and Joe Walton helped Hebburn Town to a first league win since October. 1-2

The Hornets were made to pay for missed chances on 41 minutes when, with Bridlington’s first chance of the game, Andy Norfolk’s free-kick from the left found Lewis Dennison in the box, who thumped a header into the top left-hand corner. The visitors restored parity shortly after the break, however, after a Walton cross from the right found Martin in the box, who looped a header over James Hitchcock into the back of the net.

Hebburn took the lead with 20 minutes to play, when Walton broke away on the right, going one-on-one with the keeper and firing into an empty net. The lead could have been extended moments later when Martin had an effort which was not fully cleared, with the ball falling to

Liam Henderson in the box, but the forward failed to capitalise, sliding the ball wide. With just under 10 minutes to play, debutant Jake Hackett fizzed a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but no-one could get on the end of it.

Bridlington came close to an equaliser at the death with left-back Will Sutton firing an effort which Shaun Newbrook did well to turn over.

Sutton was then shown a straight red card for a late challenge trying to keep an attack alive before berating the referee.

The win was Hebburn's first league victory in six games, and first-ever victory at Queensgate.

NOTICEBOARD

U23s manager Gary Henry was disheartened after his side were knocked out the Durham Minor Cup.

Hebburn’s second-string travelled to Deerness Valley last weekend in the quarter-final, and started brightly with goals from Jack Robertson and Robbie Gateshill.

“We went to Deerness in good spirits,” Henry said. “We took the lead after three minutes when Jack hit a 20-yard effort which took a deflection past the keeper.

“However we were forced into an early change when John Murray injured a quad muscle, so we replaced him with Robbie who has been out for the last two months.

“Robbie got the second goal after some great work from Jack on 21 minutes, and he got his second of game on 30 minutes to give us a 3-0 lead.

Bryan [Wood] saved a penalty for us but Deerness got one back on 44 after sloppy defending.”

Despite Hebburn having a three-goal advantage, Deerness’ goal before halftime gave a second wind to the hosts ahead of the second period.

Henry was frustrated with that second half display, as Deerness managed to tie proceedings before going through on penalties.

“The second half was almost all Deerness as we seemed to sit back,” he admitted.

“They pulled another goal back which again was an error from ourselves, and the third could’ve been stopped with a free header to make it 3-3.

“We missed a few chances after that and the game went to penalties - we missed all three and they scored there’s."
