THE CARETAKER'S NOTES SIMON HARRIS
HAPPY EASTER AND WELCOME TO THE GREEN ENERGY SPORTS GROUND THIS AFTERNOON. I want to give credit to Pickering following last week's defeat. They did what they needed to do well I'm not going to take anything away from them. They're fighting for every point and got the win in the end. We were extremely disappointed with our own performances - it was not acceptable. In the first half, we had a lot of the ball and lots of chances. We weren't too worried at halftime, we were quite confident. We did speak about a few things
to be weary of, one of those being freekicks because that's what they were playing for. The first half wasn't great but wasn't bad - we didn't show up in the second half though. We could've put the game to bed before the break had we done what was needed - we weren't good enough in all areas and got what we deserved. We were aware of their main threats so to concede the goals was frustrating. Mark Foden held his hand up for the second one - the first just bounced
around and there was a hint of offside. Ultimately, we shouldn't be in those situations and when we are we should defend better. People have to come in and earn the shirt, and there is a case players have not done that. The focus is to get the quality and the standards where we need them to be – it's probably dropped off if I am being honest, and that can't happen. It's not the end of the season yet, we have still got games and points to play for.

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM DAVID ALLASAN
GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO ISSUE 32 OF THE HORNETS AHEAD OF OUR PENULTIMATE HOME GAME. I thought we played well at Pickering, we just needed to put away our chances. We had loads of opportunities before half-time so we should've been one or two goals up. We had a really good first half, but it was quite a disappointing second half. We played to their strengths by kicking it long, whereas we should've kept playing through them. We battled really well and gave a good account of ourselves the week before against Marske United.
We worked hard for each other and deserved the point, which is excellent considering they are challenging for the title. I've enjoyed working with Chris Errington and Simon Harris because they've made us used to a certain tempo in training. We take that intensity into games and it makes us a better team on the pitch. It was very frustrating to get injured before that because I was playing well alongside Amar Purewal - the timing of it was most annoying.
Playing off Amar has been great - I know he'll bring it down and hold it up, so I just try to make runs into that space. The hectic weekend will be quite tough - the boys will need to recover quickly and takes things game by game. We want to win as many of the final three as possible, but we don't look at anything differently. We treat every team the same, as if it's a normal game - that helped us through the Marske draw last week.

Michael Richardson’s 70th minute strike wasn’t enough to bring any points back to South Tyneside. The Hornets nearly opened the scoring on seven minutes as David Allasan slickly played Olly Martin through, however goalkeeper Ben Bottomley blocked from a few yards out. With 25 on the clock, the visitors created another golden chance as Dan Groves drove inside and floated an effort into Bottomley’s grasp. Seconds later, Bottomley again kept The Pikes level as Martin couldn’t slot home Richardson’s pass one-on-one. Before the 30 mark, Kieren Aplin cut inside Dom Joynes but Bottomley palmed away at the front post.
Aplin again proved a danger on 38 minutes, bringing down a high cross and smashing the inside of the post. The opener came for Pickering's Jack Johnson as he followed home a rebound for the hosts on 51. Richardson equalised for Hebburn with 20 to go as Aplin drove a pass across the face of goal, giving the midfielder an open net. Aplin was then denied magnificently from a 25-yard free-kick through Bottomley’s fingertips. Brandon Holdsworth notched Pickering’s winner with eight minutes to go, nodding a deep set-piece past Foden at close-range.

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD
We recap the history of Ossett and take a look at the club's recent form. Ossett United were founded in 2018 following the merger of the Yorkshire town’s two clubs, Ossett Albion and Ossett Town, a move which helped to significantly increase attendances. Due to the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons being curtailed, The Sheepicorns have only completed one full season in their new form. Since the previous two clubs, that had co-existed after the second world war, both played their football at step four, United were able to begin life in the Pitching In Northern Premier League. They continue to use Ingfield Stadium, former home of Ossett Town, as their home ground, although they did use Albion’s Dimple Wells ground for their ladies and academy sides for a couple of seasons, before bringing the whole club
20
under one roof in 2020. In 2019, they won the new club’s first piece of silverware when they beat Guiseley 2-1 to win the West Riding County Cup. Jas Colliver and Mark Ward, who took over as joint managers when Wayne Benn left the role in December, look destined to steer their side to a top half finish, as they currently sit in 8th position with three games remaining. The Sheepicorns can no longer make play-offs, but have won four of their last six fixtures.
THE INSIDE INFO We meet Ossett United Club Secretary, Neil Spofforth, ahead of this afternoon's fixture. I first started following Ossett Town in 1999 having moved to the area, after my son was born in 2004 I started taking him regularly around 2010. He became friends with two boys who turned out to be the son of two people on the committee. I became friends with them and started doing bits in the programme, joining the committee and becoming secretary of Ossett Town. Since the merger and the formation of Ossett United, I have again taken on the role of secretary having assisted Steve Hanks before he stood down. Our season has been very up and down. A really good start saw us in the top five for much of the early part of the season, but only one win from mid September to Christmas saw
a change of management. Things have picked up since, although inconsistency remains. Ed Hall signed from Stocksbridge Park Steels in January and is in my opinion one of the top three or four goalkeepers in the league. Jack Cowgill leads from the back and in James Walshaw there are not many more experienced strikers in nonleague football. My main thought is delight that we are going to complete a league season after the last two years. I'm not keen on making predictions today as they can make you look very silly in a league where anyone can beat everyone!

THE GAFFERS
SHOT-STOPPER
ROCK SOLID
The pair were appointed at Ingfield in December following Wayne Benn's departure. Colliver lists Stocksbridge Park Steels and Belper Town among his former playing clubs, and he also holds extensive managerial experience with the likes of Sheffield and Handsworth. He arrived at Ossett following a stint with Grantham Town, while Ward moved from Buxton.
Former Stocksbridge Park Steels goalkeeper Hall played in Hebburn's 5-1 defeat in November. Hall plied his trade for Brighouse Town, Nostell Miners and Silsden, earning a move to Bradford Park Avenue in 2016. He inked a deal with Farsley Celtic in June 2018, helping the club achieve promotion to the National League North before departing after a single season.
Wakefield-born Cowgill holds a League One appearance to his name for Barnsley. The 25-year-old centreback is a product of The Tykes and, after signing a professional deal in August 2014, came off the bench in a 3-1 defeat to Walsall. After loan spells at Braintree Town and Fylde, Cowgill linked up with Boston United in 2017.

He took time out of the game but spent last season with Nostell Miners Welfare, and has played 21 times for Ossett this campaign.
MIDFIELD MAESTRO Craig Nelthorpe The former Gateshead and York City veteran made his Ossett United debut last weekend, playing 72 minutes. The 34-year-old journeyman impressed at Frickley Athletic, penning a deal with Doncaster Rovers in 2004 and playing 14 times. After six loan moves, he joined Oxford United before a third Gateshead spell. Nelthorpe has represented 15 teams over the last decade, most notably enjoying National League North stints with Gainsborough Trinity and Harrogate Town.
DANGER MAN
James Walshaw The 38-year-old marksman returned to The Sheepicorns in the summer from Buxton. Walshaw moved to Ossett Town in 2008 before spells with Leek Town, Wakefield and a promotion with Guiseley. Darlington, Altrincham and Harrogate Town followed for the forward, before he scored 50 goals to see Farsley Celtic reach the seventh tier in 2017. Walshaw enjoyed three years at Scarborough Athletic and a season at Buxton before returning to where his career started.
ONE TO WATCH Ify Ofoegbu
The lively attacker bagged the winner against Worksop Town last weekend. Ofoegbu came through Huddersfield Town's ranks before joining Chesterfield in 2016, appearing in the EFL Trophy against Accrington Stanley at the age of 16. The Nigerian winger enjoyed a total of five senior outings for The Spireites, before linking up with Tadcaster Albion and Worksop. The ex-Sheffield loanee switched to Ossett on December 30 from tier seven Grantham Town.

FROM THE ARCHIVES We look back at our opening game of the historic 2019/20 Buildbase FA Vase run.
The Hornets were forced to wait a while, but managed to secure a 3-0 win on November 2, 2019. Sunderland RCA battled The Hornets to an even start on South Tyneside, blocking Jack Robson's early effort. Nathan O’Neill’s close-range effort then went over from Stephen Callen's pass on 12 minutes for RCA. Chances were few and far between for the rest of the half, but just before half time the visitors went down to 10 men when ‘keeper Robert Dean was sent off for bringing down Graeme Armstrong outside the box. Hebburn came out of the blocks in the second half firing and in the first minute Armstrong’s volley was just pushed wide by the substitute goalkeeper. The opener came with 15 to go, as Robbie Spence nodded Michael Richardson's cross
into the back of the net. Seven minutes later, The Hornets doubled our lead when substitute Olly Martin played an excellent ball through the RCA defence and Richardson buried into the bottom right corner. In the 87th minute, Armstrong put the game to bed as he slid the ball in following Ben Dibb-Fuller’s cross. Hebburn Town XI: Jennison, Groves, Donaghy, Carson, Lough, Taylor, Spence, Robson (Martin, 78'), Richardson (Suddick, 88'), Dibb-Fuller (Wright, 89'), Armstrong Unused subs: Simpson, McCall, Munday, Nelson

FOOTBALLING FIRSTS Local centre-back Jack Donaghy sits down to discuss his footballing firsts in our latest column. First memory? Watching Jon Stead for Sunderland growing up. First inspiration? It's a hard one - Tony Hibbert. First pair of boots? Probably some Sondicos - I can't quite remember. First shirt? A Sunderland kit! First manager? Kevin Bolam coached me at junior level and obviously he later managed me at Hebburn.
First game? Monkton Juniors was the first team I played for when I was growing up. First goal? An overhead kick when I was seven. First celebration? I took my shirt off and ran over to the fans. First cup? At U11s, we were 4-0 down against Ponteland. We drew 4-4 and won on pens. They had a full squad of pros - Jon Mellish, Denver Hulme and Daniel Pybus.
