THE CARETAKER'S NOTES SIMON HARRIS

HAPPY NON-LEAGUE DAY AND WELCOME TO THE GREEN ENERGY SPORTS GROUND THIS AFTERNOON. We've been over the moon with how the past three weeks have gone. The intensity and training in particular - and to get that win last week was superb. All the lads are buzzing, it's three wins from three we're all really pleased at the minute. I think we were on top for 90% of the game - there were a few spells where Amateur had some chances but Mark Foden didn't have too much to do. We had a few decisions not go our way, and it could've been more comfortable

than what it was. Building up to Robbie Spence's goal, we had a few penalties turned down. When I saw the chance, I thought it was a penalty - the referee didn't look like he was going to give it, but it thankfully looped in. I think it was no more than what we deserved - we were knocking on the door and it was just a relief. It's a dream start for me and Chris Errington. We're realistic - we know we're not going to win every game, but all we ask from the lads is that standards are

high. We played at home the other week with a really good crowd. We really appreciate having the fans - I've got to know the Hebburn supporters more since taking this role and I think you're fantastic. It would be great to see you and please, if you are there – come and speak to me and Chris – we are more than happy to give you our time and chat to you about the football.

WELCOME TO NON-LEAGUE DAY AND OUR TADCASTER ALBION EDITION OF THE HORNETS. I think it was a very different performance at Yorkshire Amateur. Instead of the comfortable results in previous weeks, we had to grind out the win - it showed a different side to us. We could’ve got frustrated with the amount of chances we missed, but we showed a resilience and eventually got the winner. We’ve been craving that late goal all season really, and it’s a reward for all the hard work we’ve been putting in. We’ve been really good defensively -

that’s as a unit, which comes down to intensity and the structure we’ve been working on in training. The run of form reflects the work rate we’ve been putting in during the last few weeks. Chris Errington pulled me before the Lincoln United game and said he was going to tighten things up, so he wanted all of the defenders on the pitch. Dan Groves is obviously very good going forward, so it was just a case of me slotting in his position. I haven’t played right-back for

years, I did a bit when I was younger. It’s just a case of doing the basics right first, defending well, then getting on the ball and moving forward. My job’s defending and keeping goals out, but if I can get help the team in the other thirds then I’m more than happy to chip in. Every game is going to be difficult, especially against teams like Tadcaster who need every point they can get, but we’re only getting better as well.

7

NOTICEBOARD The club can reveal some great news regarding our long-term injuries. We're delighted to announce vice-captain Darren Lough has now returned to light training. The left-back was diagnosed with Gilmore's Groin in the later stages of pre-season, and was set to make a return a few weeks ago. A hand injury at work delayed Lough's first training session back, but the exSouth Shields man was able to step onto the pitch two weeks ago for the first time since July. Michael McKeown meanwhile picked up an ACL injury during pre-season training in June, undergoing surgery in November. The midfielder underwent a second routine keyhole surgery this month and is on his way back, aiming to return for pre-season next

campaign. The club wish both players well in their recovery stages and can't wait to see them back. "It feels great," Lough said following his training return. "It's been a long time - I'm just taking it step by step. "I'm currently training by myself, and I'll hopefully get back into full swing by the end of the season."

COMBINATION CUP Hebburn Town U23s secured the Combination Cup on Wednesday, March 16.

Around 200 were in attendance at Forest Hall Celtic as The Hornets' second-string stopped the 21-game undefeated Newbiggin. John Murray created Hebburn's first chance on 10 minutes, beating the 'keeper to a through ball but his effort couldn't get past him. The Hebburn frontman did get his goal seven minutes later, sliding home at the back post after some great play by left-back Gabriel Bada. Daniel Dunbar crossed into the area on the 25 mark and Newbiggin couldn't clear fully, allowing Robbie Gateshill to finesse into the corner to make it two. With 32 on the clock, Newbiggin pulled one back through Matty Nelson after reacting quickest to a cross. A Gateshill corner from the right found Kyle Oxley at the front post, and the defender made no mistake in darting a

header past the goalkeeper to restore the two-goal lead. Straight from kick-off, Gary Henry's side managed to regain possession and add another as Gateshill kept his composure one-on-one. Somehow Hebburn didn't get a fifth on the hour, as Dessie De Silva struck the post while Murray's and De Silva's rebounds were parried, before Jack Robertson eventually fired off target. De Silva volleyed Dunbar's corner past Nathan Sharpe to make it 5-1 in the dying stages, capping off a terrific evening for Henry's men.

A last-minute effort from Robbie Spence gave Hebburn Town a third consecutive win under caretaker managers. The Hornets dominated the early stages as Dan Groves and Spence went close, and Amar Purewal almost had a chance spilt in by goalkeeper Max Culverwell on 18 minutes. Hebburn’s Tom Devitt struck over twice, while Spence forced a point-blank save from Michael Richardson’s free-kick with 38 on the clock. A defensive mistake gave the hosts a big opening before the break, but Nathan Cartman couldn’t take advantage from Roy Fogarty's pass as Mark Foden caught with ease. Before the hour, Groves took

the ball around Culverwell however Ben Gordon recovered in time to send the chance wide. Groves headed narrowly over after Devitt jinked past the full-back to put a ball in, and Hebburn saw several penalty appeals waved away as the clock ticked down. Cartman thought he got Ammers in front on 65 minutes, latching onto a driven cross and poking past Foden but the linesman's flag was up. On the 90 mark, Purewal was denied excellently as he looked for the bottom right inside the box. The winner eventually came as Spence and Culverwell contested for Kieren Aplin's free-kick, with the ball bouncing into the net.

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD

We recap the history of The Brewers and take a look at the club's recent form. Although the Tadcaster Albion name was not used until in 1923, the club’s origins can be traced back to a team founded as John Smith’s FC back in 1892. In 1930, the club reverted to their former name, although bizarrely a second club called Tadcaster Albion were formed at the same time, and the two coexisted until a merger brought about because of World War II finally seen them settle on the Tadcaster name. These links, alongside the fact that their current ground, the Global Stadium sits behind the John Smith’s Brewery, gives them their nickname The Brewers. Tadcaster played in the York League for several decades and won their only York League title in 1948, before eventually moving into the Yorkshire League in 1973, initially in Division Three. Promotions in 1975 and

22

1977 progressed the club to Division One before successive relegations in 1979 and 1980. In 1982, Tadcaster became a founding member of the NCEL when they were admitted to Division Two North. A re-organisation in 1991 seen the name of that division change to Division One, which Tadcaster won in 2010, reaching the Premier Division for the first time. Six years later, in 2016, Tadcaster won the NCEL title and moved up to the Pitching In NPL Division One, where they have remained since. John Deacey’s side are currently sitting in 15th place, just one point above the drop zone, although they do have a couple of games in hand on Lincoln United, who currently occupy the second relegation spot.

THE INSIDE INFO We get the inside knowledge from Tadcaster media team member, Jay Taylor. I first joined Tadcaster Albion in 2015 and at that point it was actually part of my full-time job to work on the Media and Marketing side of things. Now I’m not quite as involved but still run the Media responsibilities on matchdays. Our season has obviously been a very tough one and not gone as we’d have hoped. We got off to a really poor start which led to a change in management, which saw us pick up some crucial points. Now, it’s just all about survival, which is the first time we’ve been in this position at this level, but hopefully we have just enough.

I think our main player to watch out for is probably Donald Chimalilo. A real live-wire on the ball and can make things happen out of nothing, the sort of player you would pay to watch. I think it’s always tough to predict any games at this level. Obviously being away from home another point would be nice, so I’ll be optimistic and say 2-2.

In the absence of top scorer Eddie Church, the striker has started the last five games. Ferguson linked up with John Deacey in January, and the striker has scored twice from the bench in his total of eight appearances.

The lively attacker proved as Tadcaster's main threat in February against Hebburn. A product of i2i Academy, Chimalilo first joined Tadcaster from Barton Town in 2019 and impressed several clubs up the pyramid, which saw him score on trial at Doncaster Rovers U23s. FROM THE ARCHIVES We revisit a dominating performance on South Tyneside against Crook Town on May 1, 2018.

The Hornets took a foot closer to top spot in the Northern League Division Two following a 7-0 win. Hebburn came into the game unbeaten in our last 15 games, sitting second in the table, while opponents Crook were placed 18th. Scott Oliver's outfit started brightly as Paul Chow struck the woodwork, and Callum Smith nodded narrowly over. The opener came on 36 minutes as Chow headed on Callum Smith's set-piece, allowing Rhys Williams to slide the ball home. Thirty seconds later, Chow made it two after capitalising on Isam Mohomad’s defence error. On 49 minutes, Chow bagged another for the hosts after heading into the net from Callum Smith's corner. The forward secured his hattrick with 55 on the clock, latching onto Craig Malley's

pass and rounding the 'keeper. Scott Wallace helped Chow get a fourth before the hour at close-range with a fine pass. With four to go, Hebburn's sixth came through substitute Peter Jones with a lobbed effort. In injury time, captain Channon North made it 7-0 after some brilliant play from, Stuart Bramley. Hebburn Town XI: Hubery, Bramley, Williams, Donaghy (Toward, 45'), Wallace, Malley, Kanda, D. Smith, Shaw (Jones), Chow, C. Smith (North, 45') Attendance: 136

FOOTBALLING FIRSTS Last week's matchwinner Robbie Spence talks us through a number of career memories. First memory? Back home, there's a field where me and my dad used to play football on every Sunday - he used to beat me all the time. First inspiration? My first inspirational moment would've been Wayne Rooney's top corner volley against Newcastle. First pair of boots? I used to like black boots when I was younger probably Copa Mundials to be honest. First shirt? Definitely Man United kit. First manager? A guy called Massimo Valenziano at Scunthorpe back in the day, he used to play for Fiorentina.

First senior game? I can't remember to be honest! First goal? The Longridge winner is probably the most memorable. First celebration? We just jumped straight into the fans behind the goal. First cup? The Buildbase FA Vase with Hebburn in May.
