THE CARETAKER'S NOTES SIMON HARRIS

GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO THE GREEN ENERGY SPORTS GROUND TODAY. The lads were buzzing with last Saturday's 4-1 victory away to Lincoln United. It was a challenging and strange week, so we couldn't really ask for more. Reacting from going 1-0 down and building to put four past them was really pleasing and relieving. We're very aware that the performances haven't been where they've needed to be over the past few games, so to get the win at Lincoln was our main priority. It stands us in good stead for the

rest of the season it's definitely a building point for us to kick on and improve. We've changed a few things in the short time we've had in training, and the lads have put the effort in and responded really well. We can't fault their effort - it showed in the performance. We could've had a negative response after going behind, but we pushed through to get the win. We’re hopefully going to drip-feed a few more bits of detail, things that we could improve, and it is a case of much of the same.

We’ve seen the tempo and the standard that we want at training. I think if the lads match that effort and that performance last week, there aren't many teams in this league that can deal with that. We wish Worksop a safe journey to the North East and look forward to welcoming them to South Tyneside.

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM AMAR PUREWAL

WELCOME TO THIS AFTERNOON'S EDITION OF THE HORNETS AHEAD OF OUR WORKSOP TOWN TEST. We're over the moon with last weekend's win we played really well. Last week was been tough, but Chris Errington and Simon Harris changed things in training that paid off. You can't name a player who had a bad game at Lincoln - everyone was absolutely brilliant. We were playing off me in the game, and it was working out despite going behind. I felt we always had goals in us the one just before half-time was massive and the second half was all

about us. It's been a tough few months for me to be honest. There's been talk of new strikers, but I've always stuck to my mentality out there. I was glad to get a striker's goal, one from a few yards out - I knew I'd score if I got the chance. There's nothing to lose this afternoon against Worksop. We'll play like we did at the weekend, in the second half especially, and hopefully it'll be enough. We need to look at it as an eight-game season and pick up as many points as

possible. It's about setting standards for next season - we're getting fitter and there are some great individual performances.

NOTICEBOARD Chris Errington and Simon Harris have been named as caretaker managers. The duo have been appointed following the departure of Kevin Bolam and Mick Mulhern. Errington joined Hebburn Town in December as goalkeeping coach, having previously been assistant manager at Dunston. Meanwhile, Harris was made assistant first-team coach in October following two years as manager at Gosforth Bohemians. The pair took training last week and oversaw a 4-1 victory at Lincoln United. Meanwhile, defensive midfielder Mark McLeod has returned to The Green Energy Sports Ground from his Seaham Redstar loan. McLeod joined Seaham in November and played 13 times for the Northern League Division One outfit,

but was recalled a month early to South Tyneside. After missing the Brighouse Town trip due to illness, McLeod made his first appearance back in the black and yellow last Saturday in Lincoln. The 35-year-old enjoyed 83 minutes at Ashby Avenue before making way for young midfielder Liam Murray.

Hebburn Town secured a first win since January 29 last weekend at Ashby Avenue after coming from behind. Lincoln United, whose manager also departed in midweek, almost went behind early as Michael Richardson fired over from Oliver Walters’ ball. Amar Purewal tapped Richardson through with 19 on the clock, however the midfielder was denied by Jack Steggles one-on-one. On 33 minutes, The Whites took the lead as Jake Park found the net from Kallum Smith’s pass. On the brink of half-time, Spence sent Purewal down the right and Allasan powered home at pointblank range to equalise. Straight after the break,

Richardson sent makeshift right winger Dan Groves through, and the captain made no mistake in slotting past the ‘keeper. After 50 minutes, Spence crossed into a free Allasan inside the box but Steggles caught to prevent a third. Hebburn didn’t have to wait too long though, as Tom Devitt squared to Purewal from only a few yards out, who poked home with ease. Purewal almost got another with 25 to go, receiving Groves’ driven pass, but a brilliant stop from Steggles kept Lincoln in it. Youngster Liam Murray was subbed on with seven to go and instantly made an impact, swinging in a cross which lobbed the ‘keeper for Hebburn’s fourth.

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD

We delve into our opponents this afternoon, Worksop Town. Worksop Town claim to have been founded in 1861, which would make them the fourth oldest football club in the world, however there is little evidence to substantiate these claims. In fact, the first use of the club’s name was not until 1882. After spending time in the Sheffield and District League and the Sheffield Association League in the 1890s, the start of the 19th century seen The Tigers move into the Midlands League, where they remained for many years. A merger after World War I meant the name Worksop and Manton Athletic was adopted, before they won the Midlands League title in 1921, and reached the FA Cup first round on four occasions in the space of five years, before disbanding in 1930. A new club was formed

22

and started life back in the Sheffield Association League before joining the Yorkshire League in 1935, however this iteration of the club also folded. The club once again reformed in the Midlands League, before their best FA Cup run to the third round was achieved. After winning a second Midlands League title in 1966, Worksop soon became a founder member of the NPL in 1968, but were relegated in the first season. A third and final Midlands League title came along and the club were back in the NPL. After spending three years in the Conference North from 2004-2007, followed by a period back in the NPL, financial issues lead to a resignation from the league in 2014, and the club dropped down to the NCEL, where they won the title in 2019 bringing them back up to their present level.

THE INSIDE INFO We meet Worskop Town Media Manager, Devon Cash, ahead of this afternoon's clash.

As an 11-year-old, I was taken to a pre-season friendly at my hometown team - Tigers vs Sheffield Wednesday - and I instantly fell in love with the club. I began attending more matches each season and it got to the point where I was going to Worksop games when Wednesday were away. Growing up I wanted to report on football and in February 2017, the club’s media man - the late Simon “Statto” Lamb - had to stop covering the club due to his health and I volunteered to help in an attempt to continue the excellent coverage that he provided In November 2018, I was promoted from a member of the media team to the media manager role, which I've done voluntarily, and I have only missed a handful of matches since. It has been largely inconsistent season, with us falling short in several matches that could see us just miss out on the top five. That said, we have produced several winning runs since and have managed to pull ourselves back into the play-

off picture - we just need to keep winning games. Liam Hardy is a prolific forward who can create something out of nothing. Steven McDonnell has also come on a lot this season and sits top of our goalscoring chart with 16 this season. Aleks Starcenko is a creative player just behind the forward line and Jack Broadhead is a menace in the air. We have to win today; that is what is required from our side if we are to get into the top five and put pressure on the other North East sides in Shildon and Stockton Town. From the reverse fixture, I remember Hebburn being a fast, counter-attacking outfit and we’re susceptible to conceding chances, so I am going for a 3-2 win in Worksop’s favour (but it is also my birthday on Saturday and I’ve never seen Wednesday nor Worksop win on that date which could be a good omen for you guys)!

Malkowski played in his homeland with the likes of Wisla Tczew and Lechia Gdansk, before moving to England with Frickley Athletic in 2015. Following an injury, he regained fitness with Wombwell Town prior to joining Boston United in 2018/19.

Club captain at Sandy Lane, the defender played for Scunthorpe and Frickley as a youngster. Picton moved on to Harrogate Town and Ilkeston, before returning to Frickley in 2013 from Gainsborough Trinity. The former Darlington frontman signed at Sandy Lane in October from Hyde United. The 34-year-old netted 46 goals in a single season with Armthorpe, earning moves to the likes of Buxton, Harrogate Town and Railway. A prolific forward, Hardy joined Darlo in February 2016 before returning to Buxton on loan a year later. Hardy joined seventh tier Hyde in December 2020 following his departure from Grantham Town, but linked up with Worksop 10 months later.

From Sheffield, the dangerous forward has netted four from his last four games. McDonnell enjoyed spells at Clipstone, Parkgate, Retford United and Maltby Main before finding his way to Worksop in 2018. He moved alongside Craig Parry to The Tigers in the summer of 2020.

After returning to Belper, the attacker joined Worksop for a third time in July 2021, where he sits on 16 goals this campaign.

FROM THE ARCHIVES Ahead of next week's trip to Yorkshire Amateur, we revisit our last meeting against Ammers.

The Hornets came from behind to secure a first Pitching In Northern Premier League win in September. The visitors took an instant lead in the first minute when a low ball in from the right was finished well at near post by Ross Duggan. Sixteen minutes into the contest, Amar Purewal controlled a long ball forward then squared for Connor Bell, whose effort was well cleared off the line. Hebburn levelled the contest in the 22nd minute when a cross in from the right was finished by Bell at the second attempt. Hebburn completed the turnaround when Dan Groves’ free kick was met by Robbie Spence, who finished well into the corner in the 29th minute. Yorkshire drew level when a deflected long ball in the 35th minute fell for Duggan who

finished into the bottom corner when one-on-one with Mark Foden. In the 73rd, Olly Martin turned his man outside the area and drove the ball into the back of the net to restore Hebburn’s advantage. Just four minutes later, Bell was fouled in the box and doubled the advantage from the spot when he smashed into the roof of the net from the penalty spot. Hebburn Town XI: Foden, Groves, Taylor, McLeod, Donaghy, Carson, Purewal, Spence, Bell (Ogbewe, 84'), Archer (Potter, 63'), Martin (Alshabeeb, 79') Attendance: 358
