THE ASSISTANT'S NOTES MICK MULHERN

HELLO EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO THIS AFTERNOON'S ISSUE OF THE HORNETS. It felt like two points dropped away to Tadcaster Albion last Saturday. With their early sending off, you'd expect us to start dominating but they started to defend and we found it hard to break them down. We didn't really do enough in the first half, we just had shots from distance and the pitch made it difficult for the lads. We did everything in the second half, we were knocking the door down and had plenty of shots but just couldn't get the goal. Oliver Walters had

a great strike which the goalkeeper saved, Michael Richardson had a few chances, Olly Martin hit the side netting - we just couldn't get the ball in the net. You'd expect us to create that many chances though, with them having 10 men and eight pretty much camped around their box. We were delighted with the amount of opportunities we created, but we just needed to finish them. Having Olly and Kieren Aplin sent off is going to have a massive impact. It's three games

rather than one they've been on fire for weeks and they carry a massive influence. They leave a hole in our team, and we've got some massive games coming up. We know what Shildon all about they're a very good side and will be up for a battle. We'll have to patch ourselves up and be ready for the test - if you don't fight against Shildon then you're not going to win the game. The responses we're getting are decent, we done enough to win on Tuesday and done more than enough today.

WELCOME TO THIS AFTERNOON'S LOCAL DERBY AGAINST SHILDON AT HOME. It just wasn't our day at The Global Stadium last weekend against Tadcaster Albion. With them going down to 10, you'd expect us to score we created numerous chances but it just wasn't to be. Olly Martin has been scoring goals and Kieren Aplin has been a massive player for us - it's disappointing to lose them but it gives the opportunity to someone else. We've got 11 games left - we're looking to win as many as possible and finish as high as we can. It's been such an inconsistent

season with injuries and illnesses, we just want to pick up some points to consolidate this season. We've lost six or seven players from the end of last season - it was always going to be difficult for us. We need to start thinking about the bigger picture rather than the short-term staying in this division is our priority and we'll kick on next year. I was at Shildon under Gary Forrest. I left Darlington due to a bad injury and went on to play a few games for Shildon, but I

moved at the end of the season. They're a good club with high ambitions, and they're doing well this season. They're a very good, organised side. We'll need to match them in battle today, they love a fight. I would say the pressure is on them, but that's this league for you - every game is tough. Shildon are no mugs - they've just added to their quality and it's no surprise to see them near the top.

NOTICEBOARD Captain Dan Groves reviewed last weekend's Tadcaster stalemate with frustration. Groves believed Hebburn had more than enough chances to snatch the 0-0 draw against Tadcaster. "It feels frustrating," commented Groves. "It was a must-win match, and their red card made it even more so, but they sat back well. "We're disappointed ourselves - we've created more chances than what we've had in the last two games and not scored. "It wasn't good enough at the top end of the pitch - Jack [Donaghy] and Danny [Carson] were immense. "It'll be very frustrating for them as we weren't doing our job at the other end - we need to be finishing our chances." Red cards to Kieren Aplin and Olly Martin at the death damped The Hornets' afternoon further, with a local derby against Shildon looming. "It makes it even more disappointing," added the

right-back. "I don't think the referee saw what happened, but we still shouldn't be in those sort of positions anyway. "It'll hit the lads really hard, we've got a huge game against Shildon on Saturday." Groves spent three years at Dean Street, lifting the Northern League title in 2016 with The Railwaymen. "I like to win every game," stated Groves. "It'll be nice to put one over on them since they're a former club, but they'll be tough to beat. "They're a very good side, so we need to turn up and do what we can."

Hebburn Town suffered a frustrating afternoon in Tadcaster last week, settling for a single point. The Hornets started brightly as Michael Richardson and Kieren Aplin struck wide, while Amar Purewal nodded over from Olly Martin’s cross. On eight minutes, Mark Ferguson bared down on goal but the legs of Mark Foden kept the score level at the front post. Following a missed shot on the 13 mark, Tadcaster’s Eddie Church entered an altercation and was shown a straight red by the official. Martin and Robbie Spence looked to take advantage immediately, but neither could keep their distanced efforts on target. Richardson almost opened

the scoring on 25 after linking up with Spence, however Harry Fisk made an excellent stop at full stretch. Tom Potter’s resulting corner was flicked on by Purewal, before Richardson’s poke just went over at close-range. After the half-hour, Donald Chimalilo rounded Foden but Jack Donaghy recovered in time to hook off the line. Ten minutes into the second period, Oliver Walters almost stuck Hebburn ahead after a powerful strike but Fisk tipped onto the bar. Hebburn enjoyed multiple more chances, but Martin and Aplin were shown straight reds at the death after an off the ball altercation.

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD

We take a look at our visitors this afternoon, Shildon. Shildon were formed in 1890 as Shildon Town, before a merger four years later seen them become Shildon United. The Railwaymen joined the Auckland and District League in 1892, before moving into the newly formed Northern League Division Two in 1900, however the club folded due to financial problems. They reformed in 1903 as Shildon Athletic and rejoined the Northern League for four years, before turning semi-professional in the North Eastern League in 1907. The name change to their current guise happened in 1923, and the club went on to win four successive Northern League titles between 1934 to 1937, with the last of those seasons also seeing their best ever FA Cup run. The Dean Street side have moved between

20

the Northern League’s two divisions over several decades and in 2015/16 they won the Northern League’s league and cup double. Along with Hebburn and Stockton Town, Shildon were promoted to step four based on their points per game record over the previous two curtailed seasons, ending a run of 2,896 league games in the Northern League. They have won nine Northern League Cups and three Durham Challenge Cups during this time. Daniel Moore’s side currently sit in fifth place in the Pitching In Northern Premier League East Division ahead of this afternoon’s encounter.

THE INSIDE INFO We meet Shildon's Wilf Tray ahead of this afternoon's battle on South Tyneside.

I grew up supporting my hometown club Evenwood Town, I married a Shildon girl and moved to Shildon in 1984. I've followed our football club since that day. Over the years I've been Bar Steward, Kit Man, Matchday Steward, Groundsman Assistant, and Media Man. At this moment in time I help mark the pitch on a match day, be a steward and conduct postinterviews, and basically any role the club is struggling to fill. The season so far has gone a lot better than anyone could have expected. Like Hebburn, we’re in a new league and everyone expected it to be tough. If you asked any Shildon fan before the season started, they’d have all been happy with consolidation, so to be in a play-off place with nine

games left is way beyond everyone’s expectations. The players I would usually say to watch out for will be missing on Saturday for various reasons, so I'll say David Atkinson will be key with his eye for a through ball, and Joe Posthill with his pace down the wing. It’s going to be tough as it always is against Hebburn, and we’re not in the best of form, We haven’t scored in our last three league games, and this weekend we only have one striker available. So under the circumstances, I think most Shildon fans would be happy not to lose, so with that in mind I'll go for a 1-1 draw.

KEY MEN

THE GAFFER

SHOT-STOPPER

The player-manager was set to hang up his boots in May 2019, but the defender has raked up 14 appearances this season. Moore began his playing career at Mansfield Town before giving eight year's service to the army. Since moving to the North East, Moore has played for Shildon, Spennymoor and Celtic Nation captaining The Moors to the 2013 FA Vase but he was injured for the final.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper has recently hit a century of appearances for The Railwaymen. Newbrook enjoyed a long stint with Seaham Redstar before linking up with Jarrow Roofing in time for the 2017/18 campaign. After a season, he found his way to Shildon in June 2018 and signed a contract extension in March 2020.

DANGER MAN

ONE TO WATCH

The defensive midfielder helped Marske United to the Northern League title. Liddle's previous clubs include Spennymoor and Guisborough Town, and he joined Marske in the summer of 2017 from Billingham Synthonia. Playing a key role as Marske dominated the campaign, he eventually departed in June 2019 for Dean Street.

The frontman played alongside Mark Foden, Tom Devitt and Damen Mullen in 2019/20. A product of Gateshead's youth setup, Sweet joined Darlington on loan before earning Billingham Synthonia's Player of the Year award upon release. He enjoyed a remarkable stint with Consett, scoring 128 in 173 games across four seasons. The striker earned a move to National League North Blyth in 2019, where he scored six in 30, before moving to Shildon the following year.

The centre-back holds 32 League Two appearances for Carlisle United. The former Middlesbrough prospect joined Carlisle in 2015, playing against Everton in the FA Cup before moving to Blyth Spartans in 2016/17. Atkinson played in the Europa League for IBV prior to a Blyth return, where he reached the National League North play-offs. FROM THE ARCHIVES We revisit a dramatic win over this afternoon's opponents in April 2019 on South Tyneside. Jason Blackburn earned the headlines after coming off the bench to score a 91st minute winner. The opening move of the fixture came as Shildon captain Aidan Heywood drove an effort past Andrew Jenninson's post from the edge of the area. Gary Shaw teed up Michael Richardson for Hebburn at the other end, but the midfielder fizzed over at close-range. Richardson later looked to become provider, whipping in a free-kick from the right which Robbie Spence nodded over. Player-manager Daniel Moore came close on 15 minutes, but Shaw cleared his headed effort from a corner off the line. Matthew Robson was denied twice fantastically by Jenninson, but Nathan Steel opened the scoring after the

hour one-on-one. Thirteen minutes later, Louis Storey latched onto Spence's pass to equalise, while Moore was sent off for dissent. In the dying seconds, Richardson's pass was misjudged by Heywood and Blackburn fired into the bottom corner to clinch the win. Hebburn Town XI: Jenninson, Suddick, Shaw, Storey, Gilhespy, Donaghy, Jack Robson, Richardson, Sullivan, Spence (Stephenson, 80'), Dibb-Fuller (Blackburn, 71') Shildon XI: Newbrook, Heywood, Matthew Robson, Moore, Curl, Vaulks, Ellison, Duell, Steel, Greulich-Smith, Palmer Attendance: 190

FOOTBALLING FIRSTS Former Hartlepool United and Blyth Spartans midfielder Damen Mullen gives his Footballing Firsts. First memory? Probably my first competitive 11-a-side game at U8s I think, at Bedlington Juniors. We won 11-0 and I scored the first goal. First pair of boots? A pair of black, white and gold Hi-Tecs. First shirt? A Newcastle one, most likely one of the Brown Ale ones. First manager? Paul Stephenson when I was doing my YTS at Hartlepool.

First senior game? I couldn't tell you who it was against, but for Hartlepool who were in League One at the time. First goal? For the reserve team at Hartlepool, I can't remember who against. First celebration? I've never had a celebration! If it was a decent goal, I'd probably just jink in and out of players as they come towards me. First cup? The Northumberland Senior Cup in 2007. I was on loan at Morpeth Town from Hartlepool and we beat Blyth in the final.
