THE ASSISTANT'S NOTES MICK MULHERN

GOOD EVENING EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO TONIGHT'S ISSUE OF THE HORNETS. I was really disappointed on Saturday - we played really well in the first half. Their first one was a worldy, which was wind-assisted. When we were 2-0 down, we were up against it, but we tried to do the right things and played some good stuff. The goalkeeper made a great save with his left hand and we had another off the line - we were doing well before Olly Martin got his goal. We went into halftime at 2-1, but we could've been winning and I didn't see the second half

coming. I thought we would've went out and had a go. The wind didn't help us because it was running on and causing us problems - it suited them to play on the break. Some of the mistakes weren't great and it wasn't a pretty game. Olly scored another when it was 2-1 and I don't think he was offside - the linesman just guessed. That changes the game. Then their third, Robbie Spence was fouled but the referee played on and they scored. That killed the

game for us - it was a mistake but it's easily to criticise when you've been beaten. From that moment, the shape and work rate gone, and it was one to forget. We know we've done well - we need to forget about the weekend's result and start a new run tonight. I want a reaction, I don't care who we play. I expect a reaction and three points, and then we can go into another run next Saturday. Revenge doesn't come into today, I just want a response.

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THIS EVENING'S GAME AGAINST PONTEFRACT COLLIERIES. We played really well in the first half on Saturday against Stocksbridge. Especially against the wind and their two early goals, we done well to get it back to 2-1. In the second half, it felt as though we needed to get after it when we really didn't. We lost control of the game and opened up at the back, so that's why they scored a few more. The 5-2 result doesn't replicate the performance we were good in spells, especially in the first 45. They were on the backfoot at the

break - we had a few chances and had one disallowed after half-time. If any of them go in, it's 2-2 and a completely different game but we just didn't take them. We're not playing poorly - when we lose, we're playing good football. We don't need to change much, we just need to get into a rhythm of winning and stay there. We went on a good streak before and won four out of five, so we just need to build that momentum back up. Every team below

us are a threat. The points are very close together between each end of the table, so we need to win as many as possible to move up a few places. We want to turn every team around at least once this season - that didn't happen against Stocksbridge so there's a lot riding on tonight. We're looking to get three points and react well from Saturday's loss.

Hebburn Town suffered another tough defeat to Stocksbridge Park Steels on Saturday afternoon. Sam Finlaw opened the scoring on seven minutes, hitting a powerful strike into the top corner from distance for the hosts. Josh Nodder went outside Tom Devitt five minutes later before forcing a high save from Mark Foden. Seconds later, Nodder proved pivotal to another attack as he linked up with Luke Mangham to slot into the bottom left corner. On the half-hour, Tom Potter's pass was misjudged and Olly Martin kept his composure in front of goal, firing into the top corner. Damen Mullen forced Roxburgh into a neat stop

from 20-yards, and Martin had his second disallowed for offside after linking up with Amar Purewal. Nodder stopped the momentum after tapping home Mangham's rebound on the hour following a tough tackle on Robbie Spence. Steels added a fourth as Mangham poked home Nodder's cross on 70 minutes. Mangham made it five after getting on the end of Finlaw's cross just four minutes later for Stocksbridge. Hebburn skipper Dan Groves pulled one back with 10 to go as he shot past Ruxburgh on the edge, but Steels saw out the final stages to claim a 5-2 victory.

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD

We take a look at tonight's visitors, 13th-placed Pontefract Collieries. Although various teams from Pontefract date back to the 19th century, the current club were founded by a group of miners on the site of an old colliery in 1958 and they continue to play at Beechnut Lane to this day. The Colls won the Yorkshire League in the early 1980s and went on to win back-toback Floodlit Cups later that decade, before adding a Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 1996. It is in recent years however that the club have had its most success. After gaining promotion to the NCEL Premier Division in 2015, ending a 15-year absence, Pontefract were immediately relegated back to Division One the following season, before returning to the top flight once more at the first attempt. They made it consecutive promotions by winning

20

the NCEL title in 2018 to reach step four for the first time. They almost achieved three in a row when they finished runners up to Morpeth Town, however narrowly lost out 3-0 to Brighouse Town the play-off final in 2018/19. The club is now a real asset to the local community as they have more than 30 teams, including boys and girls junior sides as well as a disability team. Craig Rouse’s side currently sit in 13th place in the Pitching In Northern Premier League East division, one place behind Hebburn Town. Should the West Yorkshire side pick up the three points tonight, Ponte will leap The Hornets in the table by one point.

THE INSIDE INFO We chat to Pontefract's Press Officer, Charlie Fletcher, ahead of tonight's game.

I've been involved with Ponte for around 12 years I started serving food in the tea bar before running the bar for a little bit, then got involved with the first-team and ended up taking over the socials at the start of 2016. The first half of the season has been a real rollercoaster really, the league hasn’t been overly kind on us. We did very well in the Emirates FA Cup and had a big two games against Halifax which were great for the club. We’ve turned our form around somewhat, so now hopefully we can push on. I would say offensively we have a few dangerous players We have Gavin Rothery that’s been about nonleague and can do it all. Then we’ve got Joe Lumsden who’s returned to

the club recently, he scored he first last week and is starting to look match fit. I can see it being a close game this evening, I didn’t make the game at our place but by all accounts it wasn't a classic. However, I think it will be a good game tonight and I’ll put Pontefract down for another 2-1 win!

KEY MEN

THE GAFFER

SHOT-STOPPER George McMahon

Spencer Clarke

Having spent just over a year in the hot seat, Rouse has already masterminded a memorable Emirates FA Cup run. The former striker represented Pontefract Collieries on the field, playing a vital role as the club reached the Pitching In Northern Premier League, before later becoming assistant manager.

The young 'keeper will be in between the sticks tonight as Lloyd Allison serves the final game of his suspension. A former Irish youth international, McMahon spent several years at Rotherham United before joining Burnley's youth set-up in 2018. He linked up with Ashton United on loan, making 15 National League North appearances, but was recently released from the Premier League outfit.

ROCK SOLID

A former skipper at Pontefract, he was named vice-captain this season upon his return.

MIDFIELD MAESTRO Jack Vann

DANGER MAN

The defensive midfielder was named as Ponte's January Player of the Month. Vann, a product of Leeds United, appeared for England U16s before turning professional at Elland Road. He later played 16 games in the National League North with Harrogate Town, while joining Gainsborough Trinity on a one-month loan in January 2018. After spells with Ossett United and Tadcaster Albion, Vann signed for Pontefract in May 2021.

A prolific frontman, Lumsden recently returned to Collieries from Stocksbridge. Lumsden caught the eye during his first spell at Stocksbridge, departing in 2018 in favour of Tadcaster Albion. He moved to Pontefract a year later, before Stocksbridge reclaimed the forward in 2020 and he became the club's fifth all-time goalscorer. Scoring 74 goals in total at Steels, Ian Richards allowed Lumsden to return to Pontefract after struggling with injuries this season.

Vann has made 28 appearances for Ponte, scoring twice.

Joe Lumsden

ONE TO WATCH Gavin Rothery

Player-coach at Ponte, Rothery is a former England youth international. The playmaker came through the ranks at Leeds United before spells at York City and Harrogate Town. After making five appearances for then League One Carlisle United, the 34-year-old enjoyed six years at Guiseley. Rothery, formerly of Gainsborough Trinity and Shaw Lane, initially joined Pontefract on loan in 2018 from Hyde United but the move was later made permanent.

FROM THE ARCHIVES We revisit a hard-fought Buildbase FA Vase tie in April last year against Congleton Town. Michael Richardson was the hero as his dramatic lastminute goal saw Hebburn Town advance to the quarters. Hebburn’s best chance in a close first half came after 30 minutes through a Robbie Spence header. Stanley Tatters and William Buckley also missed half chances for the visitors. The game livened up after the break and Hebburn were unlucky not to open the scoring when Amer Purewal narrowly headed over the bar just after the restart. Arron Johns somehow fired over the bar after a one-onone with Mark Foden in the home goal after 53 minutes. Just under 10 minutes later. Congleton centre forward Daniel Cope came agonisingly close to connecting to a great cross from the left wing. As the spectre of penalties began to loom, the home side finally made the

breakthrough. Substitute Jack Lambert crossed the ball in from the left wing to Richardson at the back post who nestled the ball into the corner of the net, securing the victory and their place in the next round.
