THE GAFFER'S NOTES KEVIN BOLAM

HELLO TO EVERYONE READING TODAY'S ISSUE OF THE HORNETS IN THE BUILD UP TO OUR THIRD GAME OF 2022. We were a bit disappointed about Saturday's postponement to be honest. We felt the game was called off a bit too early - we did have a few niggles, but we had a full squad to choose from. Our last game was at Liversedge, and you obviously want to put a defeat behind you quickly. Previous to that one, we were on a very good run and we wanted to start another one as fast as possible. The postponement is out of our hands and we now focus on today instead. We're delighted

that Ollie Walters has signed a contract with us. He's a good player, at a good age, and played at a high level as a junior at Newcastle. He's settled in with the group ever so well and is really enjoying his time with us. Up until recently, Bridlington were on a good run. They were getting good results away from home at the likes of Dunston, so they climbed up the table and are now just below us. I'm not sure whether Brett Agnew will have many new lads in since October, but whilst he still plays

up top for them they'll always be a handful. They've got some pace in good areas - they're one of those sides who can play with freedom and without pressure on the road. We'll need to be aware of that, but I'm sure the lads will be raring to go after last week's cancellation. It was a point away from home in October but it should've been three to be honest. We're at home today so like every other game, we'll look to play on the front foot and dominate the ball.

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM OLIVER WALTERS

I'M REALLY HAPPY TO SIGN A NEW CONTRACT AT THE CLUB TO BE HONEST. Since I've been here in November, the boys have done really well. We went on a good run and climbed the table. We were in a bit of a sticky patch, but some of the performances have been great and long may it continue. Personally, I've enjoyed it - I didn't play for quite a long time so I've loved getting back out there and improving my fitness. I'm getting used

to the lads and how the coaches want us to play, so it should only get better. Hopefully we can keep winning games and progressing - we believe we can get close to the play-offs. We're hoping to get a positive result today against Bridlington Town. We had a few niggles at the beginning of the month, so last week's game being called off at Lincoln United has given us an extra week to

prepare. We're at home and I'm sure we'll have a good crowd today to cheer us on.

NOTICEBOARD This season's top scorer, Connor Bell, has departed the club via mutual consent. Signed in the summer, Bell linked up with Kevin Bolam’s side from Dunston and netted 10 times. Writing his name in the club’s history by scoring our first Pitching In Northern Premier League goal, Bell played the full 90 against Sheffield on January 8 and scored the winner. The central forward, who has previously played in Switzerland and Australia, will return to the latter with his Australian-born partner due to work and family commitments. We thank him for being a brilliant servant and wish him every success in future. Veteran midfielder Mark McLeod's loan deal with

Seaham Redstar has been extended until February, having made nine appearances since November. Carl Taylor, meanwhile, has returned to South Tyneside after two games for the Northern League Division One side. Italian forward Nelson Ogbewe has left Hebburn following the expiration of his six-month loan from Gateshead, making six substitute appearances. The Heed have agreed to an extension on Kieren Aplin's loan, with the former North Shields man now with The Hornets until May.

Gavin Allott and Lewis Whitham fired either side of the break to prevent Hebburn from causing an upset. Whitham fired over early, while Allott had a great chance on 14 minutes on the edge but hastily struck over. Liversedge debutant Connor Smythe raced down the flank before finding the head of Ben Atkinson, but Mark Foden clutched the midfielder's header. On the half-hour, Smythe again went forward and drove a ball in, but Allott knocked past the post. A few minutes later, Smythe's free-kick was rescued by Kurt Harris, forcing a diving save from Foden. Still awaiting the opener, Foden punched away a ball in, before Harris went wide for

the home side with 40 on the clock. On the brink of half-time, Liversedge broke the deadlock as Allott latched onto the end of Whitham's cross at the back stick, nodding past Foden. Sedge made it two on the 49 mark through Whitham, driving the ball into the bottom corner from closerange. On 65 minutes, Robbie Spence went close to pulling one back by meeting Olly Martin's corner, however Sedge headed off the line emphatically. In the dying moments, Whitham countered and squared to Nicky Walker in space, but the substitute blazed over for Liversedge.

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD

We delve into the history of this afternoon's visitors, Bridlington Town. Bridlington were formed in 1918 under the guise of Bridlington Central United, with a name change to their current identity coming two years later. Their golden era was undoubtedly in the 1950s, when they won five consecutive league titles and two East Riding Senior Cups, before joining the Yorkshire League in 1959. They were promoted to Division One at the first attempt after finishing as runners up and reached the FA Cup first round the season after. The trophies continued throughout the 1960s with three League Cups and an East Riding Senior Cup added to the collection. They became founder members of the NCEL when the Yorkshire and Midlands Leagues merged in 1982. In 1987, they lost an FA Vase final replay although in 1993 they lifted it

20

against Tiverton Town and were also promoted to the NPL Premier Division, but the club folded a year later. That was not the end of the story however as local pub side The Greyhound secured the lease for Queensgate, changed their name to Bridlington Town AFC and were straight back in business. In the late 1990s, they made numerous applications to rejoin the NCEL and it was third time lucky when they were accepted in 1999. After three successive promotions, Brid regained their NPL Premier Division status but were soon relegated back to the NCEL. Town continued to play in the NCEL until they were promoted to the Pitching In Northern Premier League based on points per game, where they sit one place behind Hebburn Town.

THE INSIDE INFO Bridlington Town's secretary, Gordon Gillott, gives us the lowdown on The Seasiders. Twenty years ago I had a static caravan in Flamborough and, coming from near Derby, I went to watch Bridlington play one of my local clubs Mickleover Sports. I enjoyed it and went to watch them whenever they were at home, and I was up at Flamborough. I also started to go and see Bridlington when they were in my locality. I eventually took over doing reports for the Bridlington Free Press and just over seven years ago I took over as secretary, even though I no longer had the caravan. I did not miss a game home or away for about ten years until the pandemic set in. It’s a 100 mile, two-hour trip from home to Queensgate, but two or three times a season we stop at a cottage in the area if there are consecutive home games. We struggled to accustom to the higher level at first and with having a small squad, injuries to key

players didn’t help. Results started to improve in October and we have climbed from bottom place to 13th in the league table. I suppose our lads are all star players in our eyes, but Danny Earl represents the Armed Forces side, and we have a couple of players on loan from the National League. If we can get over the blip against Tadcaster last Saturday, when we were hit by injuries again, I think it will be another close game today similar to the one at Queensgate in October when it ended goalless.

The player-manager is also Bridlington's top scorer this season with eight goals in 25 appearances.

The loyal Seasiders goalkeeper will mark his 225th appearance for Bridlington this afternoon. Hitchcock made his senior debut under exHartlepool United stalwart Paul Olssen at Scarborough Athletic in 2010/11, before moves to Barton Town and Frickley Athletic. The former Retford United 'keeper then found his way to Bridlington and, after surpassing the 100 appearance mark, departed in October 2017. After spells at Hall Road Rangers and Goole, Hitchcock returned to Queensgate under

Versatile defender Bulless has played 18 times this campaign for The Seasiders. The 24-year-old came through the ranks of boyhood club Hull City, enjoying 10 years with The Tigers before being released. After linking up with Bridlington Town in 2018, Bulless enjoyed a successful maiden season at Queensgate as he helped Brett Agnew's side lift the East Riding Senior Cup against his former side.

Brett Agnew

The experienced Scotsman plied his trade at West Calder United and Rutherglen Glencairn before crossing the border to join Hull United. Powerful forward Agnew then switched to Bridlington Town, earning a National League North move to North Ferriby in 2017 before injuries halted his progression. Curtis Woodhouse appointed Agnew as player-coach at Bridlington, before he took the hot seat permanently in 2018.

Now in his fourth season with the Yorkshire side, Bulless has started the last few games alongside ex-North Ferriby fullback Benn Lewis.

ONE TO WATCH

Whitfield moved on loan to Queensgate from York City a fortnight ago. The 21-year-old is a product of Leeds United, prior to moving to York City's U16 side. He captained the U19s before winning his first professional contract in 2020/21 under Steve Watson, a deal which was extended in May 2021.

The former Rotherham United prospect is adept in midfield or up front. Norfolk enjoyed several years at Rotherham, playing alongside current Blackpool frontman Jerry Yates in the Reserves at The New York Stadium. After a few work experience loan spells with the likes of Goole in early 2015, Norfolk departed The Millers upon release. He moved to Bridlington in time for the 2015/16 campaign and wore the armband for several years at Queensgate.

Earl, who represents the UK Armed Forces side, is the standout performer in the Bridlington team. Capable on the flanks or leading the line, Earl caught the eye at Hall Road Rangers and signed for Pickering Town in February 2019. He scored 16 goals in 31 games at The Pikes, including a debut strike, before Brett Agnew caught his signature in June 2020. Alongside his manager, Earl has also found the net eight times this season, but has only made 20 appearances due to a red card against his former

FROM THE ARCHIVES Two years ago on Tuesday, Hebburn earned a 4-1 away victory against Northallerton Town. Michael Richardson broke the deadlock before Olly Martin and Graeme Armstrong fired home the three points. Hebburn were in front just five minutes into the game, when Dan Groves intercepted a goal kick, headed it forward and Richardson smashed the ball past the goalkeeper following Armstrong’s nod on. Richardson nearly got his second in the 11th minute, playing a good one-two with Michael McKeown before hitting the bar, and he again smashed the woodwork on the brink of half-time. Northallerton started the second half well and got an equaliser in the 57th minute, when ‘keeper Tom Dawson launched the ball up to Michael Rae and he took the ball round Mark Foden and slotted home. Seven minutes later, Hebburn

nearly got back in front when Martin’s header was cleared off the line before Armstrong’s rebound went over. In the 69th minute, The Hornets did get back in front when Armstrong headed a corner across to Martin at the far post who nodded in. On 73, Martin was hacked down in the box and Armstrong converted the penalty with ease. Martin made it four on the 77 mark after being played in by Armstrong, slotting past Dawson one-on-one. Hebburn Town XI: Foden, Groves, Carson, Storey, Lough, Spence, McKeown, Potter (Suddick, 83'), Richardson (Taylor, 87'), Martin, Armstrong (Scott, 80')

FOOTBALLING FIRSTS Former Whitley Bay and Morpeth midfielder Tom Potter recalls several memories in our latest edition of Footballing Firsts. First memory? Smashing the ball around the garden and house when I was a kid, breaking things. First inspiration? It had to be Alan Shearer.

First senior game? When I was 16, I played for Whitley Bay against St Mirren.

First pair of boots? I haven't got a clue, probably some Copas.

First goal? I'm not sure to be honest probably a 30-yard worldy.

First shirt? I'm pretty sure I would've had a Newcastle kit when I was around one.

First celebration? A backflip after that worldy.

First manager? Marc Nash, who is now the North Shields gaffer, when I was at Whitley Bay.

First cup? I think it was the Northumberland Senior Cup with Morpeth in 2019.
