THE ASSISTANT'S NOTES MICK MULHERN

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO OUR FIRST CLASH OF 2022, AS WE WELCOME SHEFFIELD TO THE GREEN ENERGY SPORTS GROUND. It was nice to win the way we did win the other week against Dunston at home. We were tested against a good side who are near the top of the league and are there for a reason. It was pleasing to come through it, and it was nice to win ugly. It was brilliant to see 814 there, we thank everyone who came along and hopefully we can see the Hebburn contingent again. Sheffield have changed their full management structure and assessed the group.

There’s at least four changes to their first 11, which means we can’t look back at the previous game. They’ve gone a decent run - they beat Lincoln United, they were dominating Stocksbridge before it was abandoned, and they give Worksop a good game as well. They’re a better team than what they were - I doubt they’ll stay bottom of the table for much longer, they’ve got a few games in hand which will probably put them three points below us.

Sheffield are a well respected team, they’re the oldest club going. They’re building a new ground and have big ambitions, so they can’t afford to be relegated and won’t allow it to happen, which is why they’ve acted. It’ll be an unexpected test for us today, they’re not bottom for me - they’re a banana skin, and if we’re not careful then we’ll slip on it. It’s mine and Kevin’s job to make sure that doesn’t happen, but it is what we do and how we play that matters.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO THE HORNETS AHEAD OF TODAY'S FIXTURE AGAINST SHEFFIELD. It was good to get three points on the board against Dunston at home. It was a good performance there were spells where we sat off and didn't do what we needed to, but we kept ahead and saw it out. Before the game, the gaffer was saying every time Dunston have conceded early, they've went on to lose. Our main focus was to grab one early, which we did. Their heads dropped a little bit, but we kept off the pedal which allowed them to

stay in it. I would say it was a case of complacency and being too comfortable with that 1-0 lead, so we need to keep at it for next time. I was glad to score the free-kick as well - it's nice to see them go in. The performances are coming in and the results are following, and we're wanting to kick on now. We've been putting in good displays all season but the results haven't been showing. Now, they are, and we are climbing up that table so hopefully we can

keep pushing. It was great to have a large crowd as well - you could hear them and they helped us push on during the game. We'll be focusing on ourselves today we know we're good enough to beat any team. We will look at how Sheffield are performing recently, but it is about what we can do.

Kevin Bolam's side ended 2021 with a hard-fought victory on home soil against Tyneside rivals, Dunston. Hebburn took the lead on seven minutes after some textbook build-up play on the right flank. Dan Groves found himself in space and squared to Olly Martin at the back stick, poking past Liam Connell. Robbie Spence almost made it two after being laid off by Amar Purewal, but the midfielder's strike sailed over. Dunston found a perfect opportunity on the 20 mark as Jack Elliott played the ball across the box, however Richard Coulson drove his effort past the post. Former Hebburn winger Elliott proved tricky yet again on the left, curling the ball

towards the top corner but Foden excellently tipped away. Martin came inches from grabbing his second in the 54th minute, skimming the post with a 20-yard free-kick. Lee Mason nearly scored against his former club after the hour, nodding Jake Stafford's cross narrowly wide of the goal. Aplin settled the game down on 73 minutes, rifling a pinpoint free-kick into the bottom right corner to make it 2-0. Terry Galbraith rescued hope at the death for Dunston, firing a penalty past Foden, but The Hornets stayed solid for the remaining minutes.

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD

We take a look at our first opponents of 2022, Sheffield. Sheffield FC were founded way back in 1857, making them the world’s oldest football club. Prior to 1863, when the FA were established, football around the country was contested under varied rules, including the ‘Sheffield rules’ that the club had drawn up. In 1860, Sheffield played against local rivals Hallam FC for the first time, and in doing so marked the start of what is the world’s oldest derby. They also played in the world’s first football tournament, The Youdan Cup in 1867. In 1872, Sheffield’s Charles Clegg, who would later become Chairman of the FA, played in the first ever international match for England against

20

Scotland. Sheffield won the 1904 Amateur Cup, beating Ealing 3-1 in the final in front of 6000. From 1949 to 1982, Club competed in the Yorkshire League, winning the Division Two title and League Cup. They also appeared at Wembley for the 1977 FA Vase final but lost the replay. Following a merger with the Midland League, they then competed in the NCEL where they won the league title in 1989 and 1991, before achieving promotion to step four in 2007 after finishing runners-up. Ryan Cresswell’s side, who play at The Home of Football Stadium, currently sit bottom of the table with 14 points, however they do have three games in hand on sides above them.

THE INSIDE INFO Sheffield's Programme Editor, Joe Smart, gives us the lowdown on today's opposition. I first got involved in Sheffield through volunteering during my time at university as I had a couple of friends who went to the games. It's not been great for us so far this season, but hopefully with the new management and some new players in the team, we can push on in the second half of the season. I would say our striker, Marc Newsham, is our go to guy as he bags the goals. Although, midfielders Harry Mitchell and Luke Hall have also been key players for us recently. I'm feeling positive going into this game with the new signings and new manager, and hope for a better result than the last time we played Hebburn

in October! After some good displays during the last few weeks, I reckon we could possibly grab a point on the road today!

KEY MEN

THE GAFFER Ryan Cresswell

The 34-year-old took his first managerial role in November, taking over from Gavin Smith. A Sheffield United graduate, Cresswell moved to Bury in 2008 after several League Two loan spells. Formerly a centreback, he later played for Rotherham, Southend and Fleetwood before lifting the League Two title in 2016 with Northampton.

SHOT-STOPPER

ROCK SOLID

Musselwhite played against Hebburn Town for Pontefract Collieries in November, starting and winning 2-1. Son of former Port Vale and Gateshead stopper Paul Musselwhite, the goalkeeper started out with the likes of Selby, Staveley and Rossington Main. He won the ninth tier with Pontefract in 2018 before stints with Belper, Bottesford and Cleethorpes Town.

The young centre-back was released from Sheffield United in the summer. Hall broke into Matlock Town's first-team in 2018/19 and following trials at Leeds United and The Blades, the later signed him in July 2019. He spent two years at Bramall Lane, and earned experience in the National League North with a loan stint at Guiseley in October 2020.

Ashton Hall

The 21-year-old, who also plies his trade in Chesterfield's academy, linked up with Sheffield FC in November following a short return to Matlock.

MIDFIELD MAESTRO James Baxendale Baxendale moved to Sheffield from Worksop Town three weeks ago. The former Leeds United youngster played twice in the second tier for Doncaster in 2011, before 103 League One games at Walsall. Baxendale joined Mansfield Town in 2016, but travelled to USA a year later as Orange County captured his signature. He made 14 outings in the USL, and returned to England with Alfreton Town and Kidderminster. The technician was made player-coach at Worksop in February after leaving Pontefract.

DANGER MAN

ONE TO WATCH

The experienced frontman has netted 13 in 20 appearances for Sheffield this season. Newsham hails from Doncaster and is a product of Rotherham United, playing nearly 50 times in the Football League. The 34-year-old, who donned the shirt for Sheffield on loan in 2005, made his name at Boston United during a six-year stay after bagging over 100 goals. Following moves to Gainsborough Trinity and Matlock Town, the powerful forward inked a deal with Sheffield in 2018.

Adept on the flanks and up top, Modest has four Championship outings to his name. Modest made his senior debut in 2008 after impressing in Sheffield Wednesday's youth setup, but he departed in 2011. The ex-Darlington loanee made 22 appearances for Sheffield FC, prior to stints with Worksop, Lincoln United and more.

Marc Newsham

Nathan Modest

The journeyman more recently caught the eye at Bridlington Town in 2018/19, notching 20 goals, before a spell at Grantham.

FROM THE ARCHIVES We recap a dominating performance at The Home of Football Stadium in October. Amar Purewal, Olly Martin and Connor Bell fired Hebburn to three points against Sheffield away. The signs of a sharp showing came early, with Martin rattling the post from the edge of the area on four minutes. Dan Groves found Purewal on 16 minutes, with the striker opening the scoring from a pinpoint header. A replica of the goal was disallowed for Purewal two minutes later for offside, before Bell sent Prior to the ground but struck narrowly wide. With 23 on the clock, Piper MacNeil handled Bell’s ball in, with Martin sticking home his spot kick for two. On the 29 mark, Jonathan Hedge spilt a Hebburn effort, but he recovered in time to stop Bell’s rebound.

The Hebburn number nine didn’t have to wait much longer until he got on the scoresheet though, as he stretched onto the end of Groves’ driven ball on the halfhour mark. It was almost four on 40, as Purewal’s attempt in the area hit the goalkeeper’s leg before clipping the woodwork. The ball fell to Robbie Spence on 63 minutes, who drove an effort off the woodwork from the edge, which later denied Tom Potter as well. The flag again denied The Hornets, this time Bell, but the attacker eventually netted his brace on 86 minutes after being slotted through by Michael Richardson.

FOOTBALLING FIRSTS Central defender, Tom Devitt, talks us through a number of footballing memories. First memory? Playing for Whitley Bay Boys Club, then I went to Newcastle City Juniors. The main thing that sticks out were the tournaments - I remember we won one on pens in Blackpool, I was captain and scored the winning one. The trophy was bigger than me! First inspiration? Alan Shearer, he was banging them in when I was growing them up. I remember getting a signed ball off him when I was proper young. First pair of boots? A pair of Total 90s. First shirt? An England kit with a red stripe down the badge with Shearer on the back - I don't even think he played at the time. First manager? Steve Watson at Gateshead.

First senior game? I came off the bench for Gateshead when we beat Salford 2-1 in 2018. My first start was at home to Harrogate, we lost in the last few minutes. First goal? On the first day of the season up in Scotland last year with Stranraer. First celebration? I scored twice when I was playing in USA and absolutely peeled off into the corner. First cup? I won a lot in youth football, but in terms of senior, we won the league in USA when I was at Lionsbridge.

INSIDE HEBBURN We get to know a Hebburn Town Juniors coach, Chris Forshaw.

I've been involved for just under four years now, since my son started going, and I've really enjoyed being part of the club. When he was five, he went to the Soccer Tots sessions with a friend from school, whose dad is a coach - Paul. They were struggling for coaches so I started helping out and it progressed from there. It was kind of by accident that I got into coaching really, but the club really helped me through the process to get my qualifications. So I was coaching that every Saturday morning - we had five or six coaches with more than 40 participants every week. When they got to six-year-old, they joined a league, so I pulled together a few of the kids and took over a team. My son and a few other lads went into a U7s league and I've been with the same team ever since - they're in U9s now. Recently, I've started helping Paul with U12s girls as well, since he was coaching them on his own and I had spare time. I've been with them for eight months now, and it's been great.

If I'm honest, the boys team I'm looking after aren't the best team in the division, but they absolutely love turning up every week and that's the main thing. Seeing them learn and progress while having fun is what I get out of it, it's excellent. We were really kicking on when the pandemic hit in 2020 - we had won five out of six games but then we couldn't play for six months. Our first win was a real highlight - we beat Boldon 4-1 in the league. When we moved to U9s, it went to seven-a-side, which meant we needed more players. I took a few lads in from another team who weren't enjoying their football, and one of them scored their first goal the other week when we won 7-1, and the cheers from the parents were fantastic!
