THE GAFFER'S NOTES KEVIN BOLAM
HELLO AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S ISSUE OF THE HORNETS AHEAD OF A MASSIVE HOME GAME AGAINST DUNSTON IN LEAGUE ACTION. I thought the first half was dominating last week without getting our noses in front. We created some excellent situations without working their goalkeeper, but we dominated the ball. Once we went ahead, they bombarded us for the last 10 minutes with route-one football into our box, which we defended against really well. They had a couple of breaks at the end but the luck has gone our way for once, and it was a fully-deserved win. Dan Groves leads
by example. I'm pleased for him to score, but there were lots of other lads who showed what they're about. The group done really well as a unit - Kieren Aplin played well again, Ollie Walters is getting back to his best. Without singling anyone out though, the full group done what was asked and it's nice to see the skipper getting the winner. There were just a few scrambles in the box late on, but Mark Foden has done well. He has just had to claim a few crosses and punch away some corners.
There was one where it caught him by surprise, but he done what was needed of him and kept a clean sheet. He'll be pleased with that - he'll admit the Stockton game wasn't his best, but we trust him and it would've done him the world of good. Dunston are on a sticky run at this minute in time so they'll be desperate to get out of it, but they've got some good players. It's one we're looking forward to we're at home and hoping to play on the front foot.

CAPTAIN'S COLUMN DAN GROVES
GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S FIXTURE, A LOCAL RIVALRY AT HOME. I thought we played really well last Saturday away to Frickley Athletic. I think we should've come in at half-time one or two goals up to be honest. We had a few penalty shouts waved away, so we were disappointed to not be in front. In the second half, we matched them as it got a bit scrappy, but everyone dug in once we took the lead to get the three points. I was absolutely buzzing to score the winner. It was the first header I’ve ever scored in my
career so I was delighted! On the bus down, we were talking about Ronaldo and his goal record, and I was saying it’s embarrassing that I’ve only scored about eight in my whole career. It was nice to get on the scoresheet, but more importantly to get the three points. It’s been our own mistakes that have cost us goals over the last few weeks which is the most frustrating thing. I thought everyone worked their socks off last week to keep the ball away from our net. As a team, we
worked well as a unit so we were very happy. We're looking forward to today. I think we're playing well, and creating a good run of wins would be great. It will be a tough game against Dunston - they have a good set of lads, but hopefully we can come out with the three points. It would be great to see a big crowd watching two local teams, and hopefully we can make supporters' trip worthwhile with entertaining football.

NOTICEBOARD The club are pleased to announce the arrival of former Dunston assistant, Chris Errington. Errington becomes firstteam goalkeeping coach at The Green Energy Sports Ground. He returns to South Tyneside having donned the shirt for The Hornets. Errington spent a number of years in between the sticks for Hebburn, helping Vin Pearson's side lift the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992. As a coach, Errington has worked with Hartlepool United Academy's shotstoppers, as well as creating his own goalkeeping academy. More recently, he spent three years as assistant manager at Dunston where he lifted the Northern League title, before
departing in September 2020. "It's nice to be back into it," he commented. "I had a year out, just doing bits and pieces, but it feels likes the right time to get back into senior football. "The opportunity came up and I know Jason [Miller] quite well, who done a great job with the club's goalkeepers. "The 'keepers here are good, they're both at different sides of the spectrum. "Mark [Foden] has played at the highest level of nonleague football, and Kieran [Hunter] is young and has potential."

Captain Dan Groves netted as Hebburn Town secured three points on a foggy afternoon before Christmas. The Hornets dominated the opening stages at Westfield Lane, with Damen Mullen sending a powerful strike from distance into the arms of Joshua Chapman. After sending a shot well over on 14 minutes, Olly Martin came inches from opening the scoring on 27. The number 11 cleanly turned inside a Frickley man, but his strong strike from the edge could only sting the post. Rio Molyneaux was sent through for the hosts after the half-hour following a Hebburn mistake, but the attacker's chance blazed over. Tom Potter found the ball at his feet with 37 on the clock,
but the former Morpeth man rushed his effort and hit over. The hosts began the second 45 in contrary to the first, with a free-kick finding Bradley Wells at close-range, who punted off target. Robbie Spence tried an audacious shot on the 67 mark, lobbing an effort from 35-yards which fell narrowly past the post. Amar Purewal then nodded down a set-piece for Kieren Aplin, however the Gateshead loanee firsttimed over. Groves headed past Chapman on 75 following a pinpoint cross from the left, sending Hebburn into the lead, and The Hornets kept hold of the three points despite a late Frickley surge.

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD
We take a look at our local rivals and opponents this afternoon, Dunston. Dunston were founded in 1975 as a works team known as Whickham Sports and have gone through various name changes in their 46year history. They were renamed Dunston Mechanics in 1982 then Dunston Federation Brewery in 1987, before becoming Dunston Federation when the brewery dropped their sponsorship 20 years later. Their first season was in the Newcastle City Amateur League, however they quickly moved up to the Northern Amateur League, winning the double in 1977/78. Their next stop was the Northern Combination, which they joined in 1980 before winning another league and cup double in 1986/87, progressing to
20
the Wearside League. Their time was hugely successful with league titles in 1989 and 1990 followed up by promotion to the Northern League in 1991. It took Dunston just two seasons to win the Division Two title and the club would then spend the next 26 years in Division One. Perhaps the greatest moment in the club’s history came when they won the Buildbase FA Vase at Wembley in 2012, beating West Auckland Town 2-0 in the final. Dunston were promoted to the Pitching In Northern Premier League for the first time following a Northern League title triumph in 2018/19, when they finished 17 points clear of secondplaced Hebburn Town.
THE INSIDE INFO We speak to Dunston's photographer, Kelvin Shell, ahead of today's game. I had really bad depression for 26 years but in 2015, I started asking for help. In 2018, I found a hidden talent in photography but I still felt as though something was missing in my life. I looked into volunteering my new skills to cover football I've been a fan of football since before I could walk. It just so happened that I saw a post on Facebook saying Dunston were after a match photographer. I emailed the club and was told to come down for a game to see if I like it. July 27th 2019, JR Cleator Cup final - 20 minutes into the game and I was hooked. I knew that I had found what I was looking for, and I've been with them since. Non-league is something else and I'm sure it's the same for supporters of Hebburn. It's more than football, it's family. This season, we got off to a bit of a bad start but then I suppose it's sort of understandable as we had a few new players.
We then seemed to have a mixed bag of results. We currently sit sixth in the the table and I'm confident that we will be in or around there at the end of the season. I've seen improvements in a few of the players - but by flipping a coin, I'd say our most important is Liam "Scrappy" Thear. I've never been to Hebburn's ground so I'm really looking forward to it myself. I feel that when both teams are local, it's always a better game. I'm going to say that it will be a close one with Dunston winning 2-1. At the end of the day, I hope that both teams go for it and every supporter has a great time.

KEY MEN
THE GAFFER Chris Swailes
Swailes scored at the age of 45 as Morpeth Town lifted the FA Vase at Wembley in 2016. Formerly a centreback, Swailes represented the likes of Ipswich, Bury and Rotherham before becoming assistant at Blyth Spartans and Hamilton. Swailes, who also won the FA Vase playing for Dunston in 2012, returned as manager in October 2016.
SHOT-STOPPER
ROCK SOLID
Connell signed for Hebburn Town in March 2020 but never made his debut due to the pandemic. The goalkeeper lists Gateshead, Ryton, Chester-le-Street Town, Durham City and Tow Law Town among his former clubs. Connell enjoyed seven years with Dunston, keeping over 100 clean sheets, before joining South Shields in 2016.
The 33-year-old has played the last 22 games for Chris Swailes' side. Hall donned the shirt for Seaton Delaval and West Allotment Celtic, gaining a move to Morpeth Town at the start of the decade. Playing alongside Swailes in the heart of defence, Hall penned terms with Dunston in the summer of 2017.

and he returned to Dunston in June 2020.
Michael Hall
The centre-back missed the campaign due to suspension, but has since contributed to four clean sheets at The UTS Stadium.
MIDFIELD MAESTRO
Phil Turnbull
DANGER MAN Lee Mason
The Gateshead legend linked up with Dunston in May from South Shields.
Mason played for The Hornets last season on loan, scoring four in five appearances.
A product of Hartlepool, Turnbull briefly moved to York City before permanently joining Gateshead in March 2008. Helping the club to successive promotions, Turnbull was instrumental in the 2013/14 campaign where The Heed almost reached the Football League.
Another former Hartlepool youngster, Mason put pen to paper for Blyth Spartans in July 2011 from Whitley Bay, operating primarily on the right flank. After moving to Whitby Town in 2014, the forward eventually returned to the North East with North Shields, but moved to South Shields in February 2018. Mason netted 32 times in 86 games for our South Tyneside neighbours, and has scored six since joining Dunston this season.
Departing with 357 appearances, the central midfielder spent three years with both Darlington and South Shields.
ONE TO WATCH Jack Elliott
The right-winger spent the start of the 2019/20 campaign at The Green Energy Sports Ground. Elliott enjoyed time with Newcastle and Gateshead as a youngster, before a loan spell at Whitby Town in 2016. After arriving at Consett a year later, Elliott plied his trade for Whickham and found his way to Dunston in March 2018. Following The Fed's promotion, the tricky winger became Kevin Bolam's first signing at Hebburn, but returned to The UTS Stadium after only a few weeks away.

FROM THE ARCHIVES We recap a resolute display from Kevin Bolam's men against Ryhope CW in August 2019. The Hornets dominated possession throughout the muggy evening on South Tyneside. Hebburn, who had made just one change from the previous game with Darren Lough coming in for Robbie Spence, saw plenty of the ball in the opening stages as the visitors dropped off. The opener came on 21 minutes as Lough's ball forward was misjudged by a defender, allowing Lewis Suddick to drive forward and coolly slot home. With 10 to go in the first half, The Hornets should've made it two as Graeme Armstrong latched onto a soft back pass but poked narrowly wide. Jack Elliott and Dan Groves couldn't take advantage of opportunities early in the second period, before Ryhope earned a 20-minute foothold in the game.
Ewan Simpson scraped a corner off the line for Hebburn, despite appeals from Ryhope to the officials. A quick breakaway then saw Elliott cross into Michael Richardson, who couldn't quite keep his effort down. The hosts were relieved in injury time as substitute Olly Martin drove a shot into the bottom corner to wrap the game up 2-0. Hebburn Town XI: Jennison, Groves, Donaghy, Simpson, Lough, Storey, Richardson, Dibb-Fuller, Suddick, Elliott, Armstrong Subs: Grant, Gilhespy, Martin, Sullivan, Taylor

FOOTBALLING FIRSTS Former Newcastle prospect, Liam Smith, talks us through a number of his footballing memories. First memory? Playing in my back garden in my man and dad's house. trying to kick the ball into a bucket. First inspiration? My favourite player always used to be Steven Gerrard when I was growing up. First pair of boots? Some Adidas Predators, I think it was around 97. First shirt? I'd imagine it being a Newcastle one because that's who all my family support. First manager? The first senior manager I was involved with was Steve McClaren. First senior game? For Blackpool against Coventry at home, we got beat 1-0. They had a decent team James Maddison, Adam Armstrong, Jacob Murphy and a few others.
First goal? My first goal for Newcastle U23s was at Southampton away, Michael Richardson was playing! First celebration? I'm not much of a celebrator to be honest. First cup? When I was 15-year-old, we lifted the Nike Cup with Newcastle.

INSIDE HEBBURN We talk to Kieran Archer, formerly the Head of Media at Hebburn Town. I officially joined up with Hebburn in the summer of 2019 to work with my friend, James Main, who was Head of Media at the time. I officially joined up with Hebburn in the summer of 2019 to work with my friend, James Main, who was Head of Media at the time. I knew that I really liked the setup from a few previous visits helping James and on away days with a previous club. Eventually I joined up as Programme Editor and Media Assistant for 2019/20 before taking over from James as Head of Media when he moved on following his graduation. It can be a difficult role. In my second season I was juggling highlights, programme editing, match reports, interviews, and a few other things. It is testing but also great fun to bring that content to supporters and see your work come to life. COVID-19 restrictions meant that we made the programme digital-only. The right decision, but a disappointing one as I made so many design improvements on my effort from the previous season.
Interesting media does not come without a great club around it. I was lucky enough to follow the whole 2019/20 Vase run. I thank the players, the management, and the backroom staff for putting the environment in place to take us all the way to Wembley. It still stings that the fans couldn’t be there. The homecoming they gave the team was unbelievable and no less than Kev, Mick, and the lads deserved. Promotion as well - it was some ride. I’ll never forget my time at Hebburn, a huge reason for that being the incredible people involved who made me welcome from day one. I’ve linked up with a new club since moving home, but I still try to sometimes help from afar.
