THE ASSISTANT'S NOTES MICK MULHERN

HELLO AND WELCOME TO ISSUE 24 OF THE HORNETS AHEAD OF A 1PM KICK-OFF AGAINST LOCAL RIVALS, STOCKTON TOWN. We're not going to get overly excited because we won last week at Cleethorpes. We've been unlucky in a few games and we have been on a bad run - but it's not as if it's been disastrous. We are clearly delighted - we made one or two changes, but the players have been really competitive from the last couple of weeks in training. We were good against a very good side - we had to be at it, and we were. They had to change their shape

in the first half because they were struggling, which is a positive in itself. It was right that others got a chance last week, but the most pleasing thing was the work ethic. It was good graft from everybody. Kieran Hunter has done ever so well, but Mark Foden came back in and made a brilliant save at 0-0. That win breeds confidence - the dressing room is absolutely buzzing. We've come in after previous weeks when we've been beaten and you can tell it's a little bit flat.

We've been waiting to turn the corner, and it was always going to happen. Last Saturday was the day - it was fantastic. Our heads aren't in the clouds - we've got to work hard today against a team who were probably the best in the Northern League over the last two years. We know we're in for a tough challenge, so it's about working hard again.

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM DAMEN MULLEN

AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S FIXTURE BETWEEN OURSELVES AND STOCKTON TOWN. Last Saturday's 2-0 win against Cleethorpes Town was tremendous. The mood in the dressing room is unbelievable compared to the last few weeks. We knew it hadn't been good enough, and we haven't had that bit of luck, but the lads were to a man tremendous. Teams are always going to have a spell, especially when they're at home and have a good home record, but it's about how we soak that up and respond. We scored two goals in the second

half, and we were probably playing against the conditions worse off. The league table doesn't lie - we're in the position we are because it hasn't been good enough. If we're honest with ourselves, I think we're in a false position and we should be pushing towards the top end of the table. That showed last week - we were definitely the much better side. I've been unfortunate with injuries since preseason, and I went on loan to

Ashington for a month which was good for me. It's been frustrating coming back and not getting that first win - but we finally got that, and there's no reason why we can't kick on and start climbing that table. Every game from now until the end of the season is massive. We don't want to just be hovering around the bottom half of the table we need to push on, get results and turn our home ground into a fortress.

7

NOTICEBOARD The club can announce Carl Taylor has departed The Green Energy Sports Ground until January 8. The midfielder joins Seaham Redstar on a one-month loan deal, linking up with fellow Hornet Mark McLeod. Taylor has made 14 appearances this term for Kevin Bolam's side - his last against Pontefract Collieries on November 13. McLeod's loan deal was also extended last Saturday, having originally been set to end on December 5. The 34-year-old has made four appearances for the Ebac Northern League Division One outfit, with the club sitting 13th in the table.

now been given a new date. The Hornets were due to travel to Yorkshire on November 27, but the clash was postponed due to safety concerns with Storm Arwen. We will now play The Brewers on Saturday, February 12 (3pm KO). The fixture has been penciled in between two home games for Kevin Bolam's side against Pontefract Collieries and Shildon.

McLeod's spell will also end at the same time as Taylor's in the second week of 2022. Also in the news, our fixture away to Tadcaster Albion has

The Hornets ended a sixgame winless run on a chilly afternoon last week, thanks to two second half strikes. A cagey start saw limited chances, until Olly Martin first timed an effort off target from the edge of the area on 22 minutes. On the half-hour, Cleethorpes Captain Alex Flett rocketed over Mark Foden’s goal from range. As a tight first half drew to a close, David Allasan was sent clean through on the right flank but struck past the post. Liam Dickens opened the second period with intent for Cleethorpes, hitting a 25-yard chance narrowly over. On the 51 mark, a long shot from Sam Topliss was tipped just wide of the post by Foden, before the shot-

stopper pulled off a spectacular save on 55. Brody Robertson sprinted through one-on-one, however Foden superbly got down low to keep the score level. Just after the hour, Martin broke the deadlock after powerfully heading home Dan Groves’ cross from a few yards out. Cleethorpes pressured with 69 on the clock as a corner fell to Jordon Cooke, who volleyed wide after a deflection. With 10 to go, Hebburn secured their second through Robbie Spence. Allasan, making his second league start, whipped a cross in for the midfielder to poke past David Birch inside the box.

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD

We take a look at our opponents this afternoon, Stockton Town. Stockton Town were founded in 1979 as Hartburn Juniors, however didn’t play senior football until 2009 having changed their name a few years previously. Despite this, The Anchors have enjoyed a huge amount of success in their short existence. Their first senior season was in the Teesside League, however they later joined the Wearside League. The club spent a very successful six seasons in the Wearside League, including four straight league titles before progressing to the Northern League in 2016. In the 2014/15 campaign, the club achieved a historic quadruple when they also won the Shipowners, Monkwearmouth and League Cups, with the latter two being retained

20

as part of a treble in 2015/16. Stockton immediately stormed the Second Division, their fifth straight league title. Division One initially proved a giant leap, with Stockton losing their first eight games, but they recovered to finish sixth and make the Buildbase FA Vase final, where they lost 1-0. Like Hebburn, Stockton were promoted to step four on a PPG basis last season. They are now enjoying their first year in the Pitching In Northern Premier League club, sitting in fifth place with 26 points from their first 16 games.

THE INSIDE INFO We go in-depth with Stockton Town media assistant, Jamie Beattie. I started helping out with the club in the summer of 2020, after my University sent out an email saying the club was looking for media volunteers. I took up the role and haven't looked back since. I've made some great friends and seeing your work published whether in print or online never gets old. The start to the season has been largely positive, aside from a little blip a couple of months ago. We've played ourselves into a bit of form recently, confidence is high in the squad right now. Kev Hayes is our standout player. The 22-year-old has taken his game to a whole new level this season, providing eight goals and six assists in 18 games this campaign and is a constant threat on the flanks.

Jamie Beattie (right)

Saturday's game is an interesting one with both sides looking for all three points for different reasons. Last weekend's result was testament to the quality in the Stockton squad that they can pick up points whilst not at their best. Hebburn picked up a vital win last weekend (helping us out!) so they will be confident heading into the game. However, I'm backing the Anchors to pick up a narrow win. My score prediction: Hebburn Town 1-2 Stockton Town.

KEY MEN

THE GAFFER

SHOT-STOPPER Callum Roberts

Adam Nicholson

Hailing from Stockton, Dunwell made one Football League appearance with Hartlepool in 1999.

Roberts has made 78 appearances for The Anchors across three seasons, scoring once. The 23-year-old spent six years in the ranks at Sunderland, before linking up with Preston North End in 2014 and reaching the FA Youth Cup quarter-final. Having signed a professional deal in April 2017, Roberts played 25 times across a six-month loan spell at Skelmersdale United. Roberts spent 2018/19 in the Northern League with Billingham Synthonia before joining Stockton in July 2019, where he has recorded seven clean sheets this season.

The 28-year-old centrehalf has made 17 appearances for The Anchors this term. The Stockton skipper linked up with The Anchors' U18s side, and made is debut at 16 in the Teesside League. The towering defender has made more than 400 appearances for Stockton over the 12 years, but missed the majority of the 2017/18 campaign due to injury. Nicholson has forged a strong partnership with fellow stalwart Tom Coulthard at the back, which has now spanned for eight seasons.

Michael Dunwell

He spent four years with Pools, before leading the line for Bishop Auckland and Durham City among others. Having spent time as a player-coach at Billingham Town, Dunwell was appointed in a similar role at The Anchors in 2013. He scored 18 in 26 to claim the Wearside League title, before taking the hot seat in the summer of 2014.

ROCK SOLID

MIDFIELD MAESTRO

Shane Henry

DANGER MAN Mikey Roberts

Henry, formerly of Spennymoor Town, joined Stockton in August 2020.

The Stockton-born forward broke the deadlock against The Hornets in August.

The tough-tackling midfielder played in the Northern League as a youngster with Guisborough Town and Billingham Synthonia, earning a move to Whitby Town. After a few years with The Seasiders, Henry moved to Spennymoor in 2014, helping the club achieve double promotions to reach the National League North. Having spent six seasons at The Moors, Henry won two Manager's Player of the Year awards.

The ex-Spennymoor Town frontman won the North Riding Senior Cup twice with Guisborough and Whitby Town, before firing Marske United to the Northern League title in 2018. He joined Stockton in the same year, and has netted 36 for The Anchors in 123 outings for the club. Roberts has scored nine times in 20 games this season for Michael Dunwell's men.

ONE TO WATCH Kevin Hayes

The winger scored a last-minute winner against Hebburn at the start of the season. Hayes caught the eye of Michael Dunwell in 2017 after impressing for the U18s, and helped The Anchors lift the Northern League Division Two title. The 22-year-old was then instrumental as Stockon reached the 2018 Buildbase FA Vase final, playing the full 90 at Wembley. Hayes has registered 53 goals in 170 games for The Anchors, with eight in 18 this season.

FROM THE ARCHIVES We look back at a resounding win at Northallerton on February 1, 2020. The Hornets created a number of chances in the first period, having went ahead on five minutes. Dan Groves intercepted a goal kick and, following Graeme Armstrong's nod on, Michael Richardson smashed past 'keeper Tom Dawson. The midfielder nearly got a second after a one-two with Michael McKeown, but Dawson pushed onto the bar. Richardson again hit the woodwork, this time on the brink of the interval from just inside the area. Michael Rae snatched an equaliser for the hosts after the break, going around Mark Foden from a direct Dawson pass. On 64 minutes, Hebburn nearly went back in front from Olly Martin's header which was cleared off the line, before Armstrong's rebound went over.

The Hornets did find their second through Martin five minutes later, following a back stick header from a corner. With 73 on the clock, Martin was hacked down in the area, with Armstrong converting the penalty for 3-1. Martin wrapped the game up on 77, latching onto Armstrong's threaded pass and slotting home. Hebburn Town XI: Foden, Groves, Carson, Storey, Lough, Spence, McKeown, Potter (Suddick, 83'), Richardson (Taylor, 87'), Martin, Armstrong (Scott, 80') Attendance: 145

FOOTBALLING FIRSTS Recently-signed leftback, Oliver Walters, takes a look back at a number of footballing firsts and memories. First memory? When I was about four, my dad took me over to my local team - Blaydon. I used to live opposite the fields, so I would hop over the fence and join in. First inspiration? I liked watching Didier Drogba every time Chelsea were on the pitch. Then I loved Hatem Ben Arfa at Newcastle. First pair of boots? I'm pretty sure they were Adidas F10s - they were blue and had a tongue. First shirt? A Barcelona Messi shirt. First manager? My dad used to coach at Blaydon. First senior game? My first U23s start for Newcastle was in the EFL Trophy against Macclesfield - I played the full game and we won on penalties.

First goal? I scored twice for Newcastle U9s against Liverpool. First celebration? I don't think I've ever done a celebration! First cup? I lifted one in France on a tournament a few years ago.

INSIDE HEBBURN We chat to volunteer, Steve Lundell, about supporting The Hornets and helping the club. I started coming along to games on a regular basis with a friend in 2016/17. It wasn't too long after that my daughter started playing and I became involved in coaching with the Junior Section. I now coach two Honeys Teams (U9's & U10's Golds), coordinate our FA Weetabix Wildcats Centre, whilst also managing the website for the whole club. Matchdays are very much a family affair, with my wife and both daughters coming along both home and away. My favorite game is also the one I hated the most! Corinthian away in the FA Vase semi-final. I experienced every possible emotion that day, and I think the euphoria of winning the shootout will be difficult to match. The proudest moment as a fan supporting the club was seeing the numbers of people out on the streets to wave the team buses off to Wembley

for the FA Vase final, the whole town really was behind the club even though hearts were breaking that we couldn't be there. It's been a tough start to the season, but it's been a big step up for the club and it was difficult to know exactly what to expect. We've had horrendous luck with injures so far this season too which certainly hasn't helped us. We have still been putting in some good performances despite the results, and given the number chances we make when we get it all to click someone is going to get a hammering. Today will be a tricky one, Stockton are in great form but we'll also be looking to put a run together and build on Cleethorpes. Hopefully a bigger crowd will spur us on and we'll come out on top - I'd take 2-1 to Hebburn.
