THE GAFFER'S NOTES KEVIN BOLAM

GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO ISSUE 23 OF THE HORNETS AHEAD OF A BIG HOME GAME AGAINST SECONDPLACED, MARSKE UNITED. Last week at Pontefract Collieries, the game was won and lost in both boxes. We're not carrying any luck at this minute in time. We were punished with two mistakes. Michael Richardson got us back into the game with a lovely free-kick - the 'keeper pulled off a good save against Olly Martin late on. We're on the back of another defeat we need some players back. We've got to bring them back sooner rather than later, and we've got to bring the right

characters into the football club to help get us out of the rut we're in. It won't be for the lack of hard work from myself, Mick Mulhern, the coaching staff and the lads - but we've got to get some consistency into our line-up. As we sit, we're in a scrap, and the sooner we accept that and get out of it, the better. Oliver Walters was a plus point, I thought Kieran Hunter in goal had another good game too. We got Ollie in and Dan Groves back, but we lost Tom Potter and Liam

Smith to injuries, and that's just the way it's going at the minute. It comes to the point where you're thinking if it's safe to train because we're just picking up injuries after injuries. Marske are a fantastic side, they've been excellent this season - but what you'll find is they've got a settled side. I'm not taking nothing away from them, they play this league very well. We realise how tough of a test it'll be, but we realise it's the type of game that'll motivate us.

HELLO AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S MATCHDAY PROGRAMME AMID ANOTHER TEST IN LEAGUE ACTION. Last Saturday against Pontefract was disappointing to say the least. The game was won and lost in both boxes. We had massive chances in the game to take the lead and get back into it, but unfortunately we didn’t take them. We ended up paying the price and that’s our luck at the minute. I think they had two shots on target the whole game and scored both, so it was very tough to take on the chin. Today is massive,

but so is every game in this league. We know we should be competing better this season and this is a perfect time to get points on the board. Marske are a very strong side, I know some of the lads there and they will be a good test. However, this group can take on any team on our day - we just need to ensure we are 100% on it from the first whistle. It’s always good to be at home and the fans

deserve a show after the last few disappointing results. I hope there’s a big turn out and we can reward the fans with a great win.

NOTICEBOARD We're thrilled to announce the addition of 21-year-old full-back, Oliver Walters. Walters arrives at The Green Energy Sports Ground following his departure from Newcastle United. The left-back had been with The Magpies from the age of eight, but was released in the summer. He made his senior debut last week, coming off the bench away to Pontefract Collieries and almost registering an assist within a minute. "I'm really happy to be here," he commented upon signing. "I want to get my head down and help the club push on. "I knew a few of the lads beforehand anyway through Newcastle, so it's been quite easy to fit in. "I got a message from the

gaffer [Kevin Bolam] asking if I fancied coming along," Walters added. "I had nothing lined up, so I came down and was impressed with the set-up. "They wanted me to sign on from there, and I was glad to do so." In terms of departures, Ali Alshabeeb left the club a fortnight ago. The ex-Consett man, who joined in June, made nine competitive appearances before suffering a groin injury. He returns home to Saudi Arabia, hoping to undergo surgery.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY We were proud to be at South Tyneside Council's Remembrance Sunday ceremony last week. We reflected and honoured those who've selflessly served our country. Hosted at Hebburn War Memorial, it was great to see so many in attendance for what is an extremely important day of the year. Club Secretary, David Patterson, laid a poppy wreath alongside many other figures from our community. South Tyneside Council streamed the event live on their Facebook page for those who couldn't make it.

Debutant Rob Guilfoyle netted a brace for Pontefract, and Michael Richardson's free-kick proved too late. Olly Martin hooked the opening chance of the game wide, after Robbie Spence dropped the ball off on the third minute. Dan Groves, returning to the line-up, drove a deep cross to Amar Purewal two minutes later, with his first-time effort sailing over. The Hornets won a dangerous set-piece on 14 minutes, but Martin could only fire into Ryan Musselwhite's grasp from 20-yards. Hebburn came inches from taking the lead on the 21 mark as Martin squared to a free Bell, who couldn't get the shot off at the back stick. Pontefract's first opportunity

came on 25, with Luke Hinsley forcing a mistake but hitting over from distance. A cross from deep was then met with a looping header from Guilfoyle, proving too high for Hebburn to stop. A Hebburn error sent Guilfoyle clean through with 25 to go, who doubled the advantage one-on-one. On the 70 mark, Richardson chipped an effort towards goal from the edge, but Jack Greenhough made a headed clearance off the line. Oliver Walters almost claimed an assist, but Martin's chance was stopped by Musselwhite. Richardson pulled one back with five remaining, sending a beautiful free-kick into the back of the net, but Collieries held on.

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD

We take a look at this afternoon's visitors, Carl Jarrett's Marske United. Several members of Marske Cricket Club established Marske United in 1956 and they started life in the Cleveland League. They soon joined the South Bank League before moving up to the Teesside League 20 years after their formation. Marske, who play at Mount Pleasant, achieved the double in 1981 when they won the Teesside League along with the North Riding County Cup and they followed up with another league title four years later, progressing into the Wearside League. Throughout the 1990s, The Seasiders had a great period of success, winning the Wearside League title in 1996 and finishing, runners up on three occasions, winning

20

Northern League status in 1997. After finishing third in their first season at Northern League level, Marske made it successive promotions as they moved into Division One, however they dropped back to the second tier between 2004 and 2011. They became Northern League champions in 2015, however they opted to remain in the ninth tier. By the time they won the title again, in 2018, they were promoted to the Pitching In NPL Division One. Jarrett’s side are strong promotion contenders this season as they sit second with 34 points from a possible 39, whilst Adam Boyes is the division’s top scorer.

THE INSIDE INFO We get a lowdown of our opponents through Marske United's Mark Hathaway. I watched my first game in 2007, after my father-in-law moved from Redcar to Marske and got a season ticket. I was actually a Darlington supporter at that time, however slowly but surely I went to more Marske games and less Darlington ones. I joined the committee in 2010 and started off helping with things like match reports. When the Secretary stepped down in 2015 due to ill health, nobody else volunteered so I put my name forward and have been in the role since. The start to the season has been tremendous. We equalled our best-ever run in the FA Cup, making the fourth qualifying round, beating South Shields and Chester. In the league we sit in the playoff places having won 11. We have played extremely well in nearly every game, the exception being the defeat to leaders Liversedge who

deservedly beat us. Adam Boyes, is our obvious star player, who has scored 29 goals this season, including 11 in the FA Cup where he is currently the competition's leading scorer. However, I am going to pinpoint central midfielder Dale Hopson, who makes the team tick alongside Glen Butterworth and Craig Gott. Dale has experience playing at a higher level and it is clear to see why when you watch him play – his distribution is excellent and he has an eye for goal. It will be a tough game, today as all games are in the NPL East. The fact that it is a North East derby adds to the potential toughness of the game. I think there will only be one goal in it, so I'll go a 2-1 Marske win.

KEY MEN

THE GAFFER

SHOT-STOPPER Ryan Catterick

Adam Wheatley

The experienced Marske boss has been in the hot seat at Mount Pleasant since June 2014.

Catterick has kept 16 clean sheets this season, conceding the least in the division. Catterick spent a strong amount of time on Middlesbrough's books before joining Hartlepool United, where he earned experience in the Northern League on loan at Guisborough Town. Released without a league appearance at Pools, he joined Carl Jarrett's side in June 2020. The shot-stopper kept seven clean sheets in 15 last year, and has only been scored past eight times in league action this season.

Carl Jarrett's skipper, the Seasiders stalwart has been at Mount Pleasant for nine years. Hailing from Middlesbrough, Wheatley has made around 450 appearances for Marske since arriving from Stokesley Sports Club. The 31-year-old centreback was named as Supporters and Players' Player of the Season last year, and has played in 22 of The Seasiders' 23 fixtures this campaign. Wheatley has also registered two goals, netting against Brighouse and Worksop Town.

Carl Jarrett

Formerly manager of Billingam Town, Jarrett helped Billy retain Northern League top flight status across three years prior to taking over at Marske. After winning the Northern League in 2014/15, he stepped down briefly, but returned after a week away from the club. Another Northern League Division One title later and Jarrett is nearing his 350th game for The Seasiders.

ROCK SOLID

MIDFIELD MAESTRO

Craig Gott

The 2018 Northern League Player of the Year, Gott is Marske's vice-captain and a regular in the line-up. The exciting midfielder penned a deal with Darlington from Billingham Synthonia in 2012, but moved to Marske due to work commitments 12 months later. He made 123 appearances before Spennymoor came calling, but he returned to Marske after a year at The Brewery Field. A 27-goal season in 2017/18 saw the exNorton & Stockton man guide The Seasiders to the Northern League title.

DANGER MAN Adam Boyes

A prolific poacher, Boyes has scored 29 times from 23 games this season. A product of York City, the frontman made his debut in the 2008 Buildbase FA Trophy semi-final before a fruitless spell at Championship side, Scunthorpe. The ex-Boston United and Barrow attacker signed for Gateshead in May 2013, making 13 appearances and scoring once. Spells at Guiseley, Bradford PA and Spennymoor followed, before Marske swooped in during the summer of 2020.

ONE TO WATCH Matty Tymon

The tall marksman bagged a last minute winner for Marske on Tuesday night. Tymon came through the ranks at Hartlepool United, penning professional terms before loan spells at Spennymoor and Whitby Town. The ex-West Auckland striker saw several stints at Workington and Whitby following his release at Victoria Park, scoring 17 in the 2016/17 campaign for The Blues. Tymon, who has netted nine from 19 appearances this season, also scored away to Gateshead in the Emirates FA Cup.

FROM THE ARCHIVES We look back at a resilient showing from The Hornets in Bishop Auckland two years ago. Hebburn Town made it eight unbeaten on August 21, 2019, courtesy of a last-gasp winner. On five minutes, Kevin Bolam's men broke the deadlock after some fine possession. Jack Elliott picked out Ben Dibb-Fuller in the danger zone, who made no mistake from close-range, blasting into the back of the net. Hebburn defended sloppily moments later, allowing Bishops to peg level on the eight minute mark. Hebburn hit the woodwork on several occasions in the first period, but the visitors were unable to take the advantage before the break. Bishop Auckland should've went ahead after the interval, hitting agonisingly wide, prior to Andrew Jenninson making a point-blank stop. As time ticked in the second

45, it looked like Hebburn would be forced to settle for a point. However, substitute Olly Martin provided the spark The Hornets needed on 85 minutes. A cross from the flank by the attacker was bulleted home by Graeme Armstrong, winning three points for Hebburn in dramatic fashion. Hebburn Town XI: Jenninson, Groves, Lough, Storey, Donaghy, Carson, Dibb-Fuller (Sullivan, 77'), Richardson, Armstrong, Suddick (Martin, 70'), Elliott Attendance: 262

FOOTBALLING FIRSTS Midfielder and fullback, Carl Taylor, reflects on a number of footballing firsts and memories. First memory? I remember going along to Leam Rangers for my first ever training session when I was four. I was a year too early, but they let me play because I was alright. First inspiration? Probably Cesc Fàbregas. Alan Shearer is always your first as a Newcastle fan, but I watched Fàbregas the most. First pair of boots? A pair of white and gold Nike boots. First shirt? I'm a toon fan so a Newcastle United kit. First manager? Kevin Bolam was manager at my boy's club. My first senior manager was Keith Curle at Carlisle United. First senior game? Coming off the bench for Carlisle United against Hartlepool in League Two.

First goal? I was played right-back for Hebburn away to Whitley Bay in the FA Cup. We won 7-1 and I scored. First celebration? Alan Shearer - the finger in the air. First cup? The Monkton Cup with Leam Rangers a few years ago.

JUNIORS SECTION Hebburn Town are supporting The FA's #PlaySafe campaign this weekend. The whole of football in England will join forces this weekend to focus attention on the vital importance of safeguarding in the game. Play Safe is officially supported by the NSPCC and will run on a designated weekend every season from now on. “As a youth team coach, I will be working with my club to

ensure we support the Play Safe messaging,” says FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham. “I am also pleased that the campaign has the support of the former footballers with lived experience of abuse in football, who are on our Survivor Support and Safeguarding Advisory Group." The Group stated: “learning from the past is crucial, so that we can prevent the horrific experiences that happened to us and so many others in football, from happening again."

INSIDE HEBBURN We chat to Hebburn Town Secretary, David Patterson, about his work with the club. Good afternoon everyone, I'm looking forward to our game today against Marske United. I was watching Hebburn on and off as a supporter - then I got a call when I was away with work in London over eight years ago, asking if I'd help out. In my first meeting, the manager resigned and all the players went with him, as so did the pre-season fixture schedule! It's been a lot of hard but enjoyable work - my favourite memory would have to be the Buildbase FA Vase final. A year and a half of sleepless nights and planning in the build-up - only my wife and daughter saw the efforts we put in for the game.

The Pitching In Northern Premier League introduced himself a few weeks back and mentioned we're now playing with the big boys. It's definitely been a step up this season, but we've been very unfortunate with injuries. Today will be a very hard game, especially with Marske sitting in second with good form.
