THE GAFFER'S NOTES KEVIN BOLAM

WELCOME TO TODAY'S ISSUE OF THE HORNETS AHEAD OF ANOTHER GAME AT THE GREEN ENERGY SPORTS GROUND, THIS TIME IN LEAGUE ACTION. Last week against Warrington Town, we patched the side up and pushed them all the way. We felt a little bit disappointed that we didn't at least take them to penalties. We missed a few chances, but creating them is the main thing. I felt it was a stonewall free-kick on Carl Taylor for the second goal, but the referee didn't give it and it killed the game when we were on the front foot for an equaliser. Funnily enough, Olly Martin has played at right-

back before. I said at training a few might have to play out of position - Carl played at leftback then got switched to rightback when Mark Foden took an injury. Olly obviously took the 'keeper jersey fair play to him, he had a really good game. We started the game with seven players unavailable, but it's a squad game and I'm really pleased with the lads who've came in and applied themselves in the right manner. Matty Robinson is a tough, young lad

with a bright future ahead of him another lad who has stepped up from the U23s. We finished the game with a 16 and 17-year-old out there, so there's major plus points. The FA Trophy has now finished for us we're determined to try and climb the league. We need some players back, that's a given. It's a key to get onto a run, and hopefully these chances that we're given will start going into the back of the net.

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM CARL TAYLOR

HELLO AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S DIGITAL PROGRAMME BEFORE ANOTHER BIG LEAGUE TEST. On Saturday, I think it was the best we've played in a long time to be fair. I feel like we competed for a good 70 minutes, but we're not finishing our chances. We need to start scoring goals otherwise we're not going to win games. Warrington didn't have that many chances, but they were more clinical and put two away. The cup games are a welcome distraction, but our focus is on the league. It's our first season at this level, so the

aim was always just to pick up as many points as possible, and now there are no excuses for that. Obviously due to injuries, I've been playing at leftback over recent weeks. I've never known a team to have so many injuries! They've all come at once and we've been down to the bare bones - it's a big struggle. If I'm honest, playing at fullback is quite new to me and I was a bit weary at first. Now that players are returning, hopefully I can push forward

again and help the team at the top end of the pitch. We really have to pick up points going into winter it's where the games start to hit thick and fast, and the table starts to separate. We've got to pick three points up today. We're on the road nearly every week, so we have to make use of a home crowd and get a win over the line, otherwise it'll be a very difficult game at Pontefract.

NOTICEBOARD We're delighted to confirm the signing of 26year-old midfielder, Liam Smith. Smith arrives at The Green Energy Sports Ground to bolster Kevin Bolam's injuryravaged side. The South Tyneside native worked his way through the ranks at Newcastle United, inking his first professional deal in 2015. He linked up with Blackpool on a short-term loan deal in March 2016, where he played eight times in League One. Smith moved to Crewe Alexandra the season after, but an early injury disrupted his stay at Gresty Road. The playmaker departed Newcastle in 2018 and joins Kevin Bolam's side following trial periods with the likes of Crewe and York City. Smith is eligible to make his

debut in today's Pitching In Northern Premier League East Division clash against Stocksbridge Park Steels. Meanwhile, Mark McLeod has joined Seaham Red Star on loan until December 5. The central midfielder arrived at The Hornets in the summer, making 10 starts. The ex-Darlington man could make his debut for Seaham today, as they welcome Bishop Auckland in league action. Mark Collingwood's outfit currently sit 12th in the ninth tier with six wins from 17.

SPORT NEWCASTLE Last month, we were honoured to be named as Sport Newcastle's Team of the Year. The memento was handed over following our 2020 Buildbase FA Vase victory in May. “It's unbelievable," said Club Chairman, Vin Pearson. "I've been there nearly 34 years on and off the field, and it's just went sky high. "The only downside about Wembley was there were no supporters. "Wembley is a place I'll never forget - we were treat like kings. "The support from the media and everyone in the community was first class. "I'm 75 years of age, I've never

with the club, and we really appreciate this award." The ceremony featured the likes of ITV Tyne Tees and BBC Look North in attendance, with the club reaching many TV screens across the region. Hebburn Town thank Sport Newcastle for a fantastic evening and superb recognition, and we look forward to meeting the organisation again in the near future.

Kevin Bolam's side were knocked out the Buildbase FA Trophy last week despite a spirited showing at home. The hosts started the brighter as Amar Purewal's cross, intended for Tom Potter, was picked up by Connor Bell who smashed past the post. Matty Grivosti took on Tom Devitt just before the halfhour, stinging a shot to Mark Foden who tipped over. Warrington drove forward again with 40 on the clock, however Amis' strike was neatly saved low by Foden. Dylan Archer shot off target for The Hornets on the brink of the break, prior to a golden chance in the second 45. Olly Martin played a deep cross for Purewal who, after taking it down superbly, skimmed the back stick.

Seconds later, the visitors broke the deadlock. Jack Mackreth latched onto the end of Dom Reid's pass, calmly finishing into the back of the net on 58 minutes. On 63 minutes, Hebburn came inches from levelling. Purewal troubled the Warrington backline with a driven cross falling to Bell, but a last-ditch block somehow sent the effort over the bar. Three minutes later, Warrington introduced debutant Stefan Mols into the middle, who made an instant impact. Within 10 minutes of the change, the number 14 tucked home Mackreth's rebound following good build-up by Reid again.

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD

We take a look at our opponents today, Stocksbridge Park Steels. Stocksbridge Park Steels were formed in 1986 when Stocksbridge Works merged with Oxley Park, and they instantly made numerous improvements to their Bracken Moor Stadium to support a rise through the footballing pyramid. The mid-1990s brought a period of success as Steels established themselves as one of the strongest sides in the NCEL and they achieved promotion to the Northern Premier League First Division in 1996, before establishing themselves well at that level over the next five years. In 2009, Steels reached the Premier Division after seeing off Belper Town in the play-off final but were relegated back to their current level five years later.

22

They are five-time winners of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup. Stocksbridge’s most famous players of all time are Jamie Vardy, in his younger days, and Chris Waddle, who played just a single game in 2002. Perhaps a little-known fact is that in 2002 during a 17-1 victory in the qualifying rounds, Steels’ Paul Jackson equalled an all-time FA Cup record for most goals during a match when he bagged 10 against Oldham Town. Ian Richards’ side currently sit in 10th position, with 17 points amassed from their first 13 games.

THE INSIDE INFO We get a lowdown of today's visitors through Steels' Media Manager, Adam Allcroft. Hello everyone, we're looking forward to making the journey to the North East this afternoon. I started helping the club last summer - I had been made redundant from my job and was looking for something to do! I got in touch with Stocksbridge due to my passion for football and I've been the Media Manager since. It has been a solid start to the season. Obviously things soon changed after Chris Hilton resigned as manager, but Ian Richards has since come in and been doing a good job, keeping us in the hunt for the play-offs. Luke Mangham is our leading

scorer and he is very good at leading the line as he'll bring our wingers into play as well. Our goalkeeper Ed Hall has been in top form this season too and will be tough to beat! It'll be an interesting game for sure today, Hebburn are a good side that are probably better than their position. But we've been unlucky at times and have got some good results under our belts, so it really could go either way.

KEY MEN

THE GAFFER

SHOT-STOPPER Ed Hall

Liam McFadyen

Appointed in September, Richards holds 24 Football League appearances to his name as a player.

The former Farsley Celtic stopper has represented the Yorkshire national team. Hall played for Brighouse Town, Nostell Minors and Silsden, earning a move to Bradford PA in November 2016. He inked a deal at The Citadel in Jun 2018, helping Farsley reach promotion to the National League North before departing after a single season. Stocksbridge picked him up and, after an injury disturbed 2019/20 campaign, Hall has played on 15 occasions this year.

The experienced skipper has been at the forefront of Steels' performances. McFadyen represented Retford United and Worsbrough Bridge prior to signing for Stocksbridge, where he has been a fans' favourite at the heart of defence. The Steels captain, who has even played in between the sticks for the club, missed last season due to a sabbatical. He has made 11 appearances for Stocksbridge this campaign, helping keep four clean sheets.

Ian Richards

A product of Blackburn Rovers, Richards went on to don the shirt for Halifax Town before dropping into nonleague with Belper Town. He enjoyed a successful stint with Stocksbridge on the field, prior to creating a name in management following 12 with Penistone Church. He resigned two months ago, taking up the vacant Steels post left by Chris Hilton.

ROCK SOLID

Sim Finlaw

DANGER MAN

Luke Mangham

ONE TO WATCH

The highly-rated, tough-tackling midfielder joined Stocksbridge in October 2020. Finlaw, who has made 16 appearances this season, donned the shirt for the likes of Clipstone, Sheffield and Handsworth Parramore. The central midfielder, who trialed with Chesterfield in 2013, then played over 100 times for Staveley Miners Welfare. He was club captain at The Trojans, where he also picked up a Player of the Year accolade, before moving to Stocksbridge.

Mangham is Stocksbridge's top scorer this year with six to his name.

The versatile forward, who plied his trade in midfield last year, bagged last time out. Ruthven has scored over 60 times at Stocksbridge, with his second of the 2021/22 season coming against Marske United a fortnight ago. He made five substitute appearances for Sheffield in 2013, before moving to Lincoln United where he earned a top scorer award. Ruthven put pen to paper at Steels in September 2015, netting on his debut against Clitheroe. He has played 15 times this campaign.

MIDFIELD MAESTRO

The lethal goalscorer joined Garforth Town from Worsbrough Bridge in the summer of 2014, finishing top of the charts in his first campaign. He switched to Frickley Athletic in 2016, bagging on his debut, before moving to Steels at the start of 2017/18. His first season at Stocksbridge was plagued with injuries, before he found the net 12 times from 26 games in 2019/20. He has played on 10 occasions this season, scoring in more than half.

FROM THE ARCHIVES We relive a fine evening performance from The Hornets in early August 2019. Hebburn Town made it two from two at The Green Energy Sports Ground, as they welcomed Penrith. An even opening almost came into life on three minutes as the Penrith 'keeper rushed out of net, with Ben Dibb-Fuller picking out Louis Storey, but the skipper fired over. Four minutes later, DibbFuller crossed to Graeme Armstrong, who was denied by a last-ditch tackle. Jack Elliott powerfully nodded off the bar from the resulting corner. Hebburn got their opener with 14 on the clock, as Armstrong capitalised on an error and slotted into the net. Elliott, causing a havoc for the visitors, then found Storey, firing inches wide from range. On the 22nd minute, Michael Richardson notched his first of the new season.

Some good build-up play play from Elliott set the ex-South Shields man up for a simple, close-range effort. Richardson was also a threat in the second period, winning a penalty almost instantly, but Armstrong shot over from the spot. Only minutes later, Richardson whipped a cross into the area, which Robbie Spence met with a diving header past the goalkeeper at the near post to make it 3-0. Hebburn Town XI: Jenninson, Groves, Carson, Lough, Simpson, Dibb-Fuller (Suddick, 72'), Spence (Taylor, 68'), Storey, Elliott, Armstrong (Sullivan, 81'), Richardson

FOOTBALLING FIRSTS Former Darlington forward, Amar Purewal, talks us through some early memories on the pitch. First memory? Playing for Plains Farm at Monkton at U8s. First inspiration? Probably Thierry Henry cracking striker. First pair of boots? R9's blue boots! First shirt? I support Coventry City, so it would've been on of theirs in the 90s. First manager? Paul Baker at Newcastle Benfield. First senior game? For Newcastle Benfield, I can't remember who against. We won 4-0, I came off the bench at 16-year-old.

First goal? Up at Tow Law for Benfield - I came on and scored. First cup? In children's football - I won the Russell Foster U12s league. In senior, the Northern League with Darlington.

U23S SECTION Our U23s boss, Gary Henry, reflects on his side's last month of results. The Hornets secured a 3-2 victory against Wallsend Boys Club last Saturday, with Robbie Gateshill notching a brace. "Overall it wasn't a great performance - it was probably the first in a while where we've let our standards drop," Henry honestly assessed. "We went 2-0 up, both from Robbie, but we had to take him off due to dissent rules. "The second half wasn't good enough, we didn't move the ball quick enough and made sloppy mistakes. "They got one back before Jack Robson made it 3-1. "They then scored again before hitting the bar and forcing Kieran [Hunter] into some great saves, so we got away with it really." Henry's side next face up to Gosforth Bohemian in cup action this afternoon.

"It'll be a tough game - they'll make us work for it. "We'll hopefully get some bodies back for it and be full of confidence. "We've got a cup game the week after against South Moor in the Durham Minor, so the aim is to progress as far as we can." The U23s' gaffer also praised midfielder Matty Robinson, who came off the bench for the first-team seven days ago to make his senior bow. "I'm chuffed for him - he's been brilliant for us this season! "He's still eligible to play for the U18s but we invited him down in pre-season, and he was excellent for us, so he's deserved the call up."

INSIDE HEBBURN We chat to Hebburn Town photographer, Richard Waugh, about his connection with the club. Good afternoon everyone, I'm looking forward to today's game against Stocksbridge Park Steels. Back in 2017, I noticed on Facebook that Hebburn were struggling financially, with hardly anyone coming through the gates and the possibility of closing the gates for good, I didn't want to see a local club going under. I got talking to Gary Henry who I knew when playing and taking photos for Hebburn Iona FC, and he recommended me to visit and take a few photos for them so they could gain some exposure on social media. The rest they say, is history! My favourite memory has to be winning the FA Vase and

seeing the fans lining the streets cheering on the players when leaving Hebburn for Wembley - it was amazing. The Northern Premier League East is a very tough league, with it being Hebburn's first time in this tier I think they have coped pretty well - we just need a bit consistency which I'm sure will come, we certainly have the players to do so. It will be a very tough game today. Hebburn are at home and with hopefully a good crowd there cheering them on, I'm going for a 2-1 win.
