THE ASSISTANT'S NOTES MICK MULHERN
GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE, ENJOY TODAY'S ISSUE OF THE HORNETS AHEAD OF A WELCOMED CHALLENGE IN THE BUILDBASE FA TROPHY. Last Saturday, it was two points dropped if I'm honest. We were very good and caused them a lot of problems - to be fair Bridlington had a couple of chances as well. If it had been 3-1 at half-time to us, I don't think anyone would've complained. You've got to take your chances when you create them and we did create them, which was the really pleasing thing. The disappointing thing was we didn't create anything in the second half, we were poor.
The lads were the first to admit that. We just need a bit of consistency, which we've had over recent weeks to be fair. Jack Donaghy has been really good this season, but you didn't notice he wasn't there - that change was quite seamless. We then lost the skipper and Olly Martin filled in at right-back, which again didn't hurt us. The changes didn't help as it disrupted the flow, and I think Bridlington were over the moon to get a point. Warrington are a
really good side, we've spoke to a few people in regards to them. They're very strong and direct - they'll work us really hard. It will be a challenge - it won't be too dissimilar to teams in our league, but it will be magnified a little bit since they're from the level above. It's a cup we know we're not going to win, but it'd be nice to knock them out and go into the next round. We've got a few injuries, so hopefully seven days is enough time to see where we're at.

HELLO AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S DIGITAL PRE-GAME READING AMID A TOUGH WARRINGTON TEST. I'm still a bit gutted from Bridlington, it's a game we should've won. They're near the bottom of the league and we missed a few chances in the first half. We were disappointed with the second half performance, but today is a different game all together. We've prepared differently and with them being in the league above, it's a free hit for us there's nothing to lose. My own season has been a bit like the team really - I've been in and out,
and picked up injuries. It was nice to be back in and get 90 minutes last week - I was shattered by the end as it was my first full game since Sheffield. I always want to play and score, and I'm frustrated I didn't get on the scoresheet last week. It feels like we're on the road every week, so it's good to be at home today. They're coming to our place and don't know what to expect - we've just got to go out and attack them. I'm sure if we get
one early doors, we'll be able to get a few more. We're quite experienced playing teams from leagues above, with our pre-season and Emirates FA Cup run. Against Ashton United for example, we absorbed pressure and then got them when they were weak on the counter. That definitely stands us in good stead, and it'll be nice to take our focus off the league for a week.

Kevin Bolam's side were forced to settle for a point last time out against a depleted Bridlington Town. The hosts looked to set the tone early, as a scramble from a free-kick saw a strike skim the woodwork. The biggest chance of the opening stages fell Hebburn’s way, with Dylan Archer’s driven cross forcing a pointblank save from Amar Purewal’s strike Seconds later, Connor Bell slotted through Olly Martin who lobbed the ‘keeper, however the ball fell wide of the post. Four minutes later, Martin flicked it onto Archer, who hooked narrowly wide for The Hornets. The quick pace continued, with Danny Earl cutting
inside and forcing a fingertip save from Mark Foden on the 15 mark. Lewis Dennison went through on 35 minutes, but Foden made a huge save one-on-one to keep the score level. Thirty-nine minutes in, Bell raced inside the box, however the forward slashed off target before another effort was blocked. Leon Dawson’s ball in skimmed the head of Nathan Hotte on 51 minutes, falling wide of the mark for Bridlington. With three to go, Martin’s free-kick on the halfway line was nodded past the post by Robbie Spence, finishing the game goalless.

#9 CHANNON NORTH
HEBBURN HEROES: CHANNON NORTH We go through the archives with former Hebburn Town frontman and skipper, Channon North. The tall forward, now at Jarrow, scored 111 times for The Hornets from just short of 200 outings. North put pen to paper at The Green Energy Sports Ground midway through a struggling 2013/14
campaign. Two seasons prior, Hebburn had reached the Emirates FA Cup fourth round qualifying, drawing Gateshead away from home. However, Hebburn were to now build
from scratch. The then Northern League Division One outfit faced a major setback, with the management team and squad depart for Jarrow Roofing. Ex-Hebburn players in Scott Oliver and Davy Bell took
charge, assembling a young, local group of players. North explains: "When I was younger, I was at Hebburn Reyrolles for a number of years with Mark Collingwood. "He went to Seaham Red Star, so I moved there for two or three years under him. "He got a bit more money and a few others players were coming in - and I was wanting to become a mainstay in the team. "I was put onto Scott Oliver, so I joined Hebburn around the Christmas period. "We were stonedead bottom with about three or four points when I first came in. "That's where it all started - we recruited a few more over the New
Year but we couldn't rescue it in the end. "If we performed all season like we did in the second half of it, we would've probably stayed up. "It was just too much of an ask unfortunately - I think we had 38 points in the end, which I thought was pretty decent form. "We fancied ourselves at times to be honest! "The squad was quite depleted from when I arrived though. "They were all great lads, but it's just all about quality in the first division. "Going down to Division Two, I think the main aims were keeping hold of the new lads that came in with me and adding to it. "I think we did ok we should've got promoted much earlier than what
we did. "There was one season where we finished fourth - I think we had five games left and just needed a win and a draw. "We couldn't buy a win so we didn't go up, which was really frustrating. "We had some good players - Alan Pegram in midfield, a big striker in Chris Goss, then Steven Hubery came in as a 'keeper, Craig Malley, Ross Toward. "It was all a unit - it was fun, enjoyable, and you looked forward to every minute of it. "We all wanted to win as well, which was the main thing." After numerous seasons in the tenth tier, the club found themselves in a battle to survive due to
19
financial trouble. "It was depleting for quite a while with sponsorship," North stated. "I was there for a long time and we didn't really see any development. "The team were moving forward as we were all tightknit, but we weren't really paying much money compared to others. "I had a chat with Scott and he was worried all the players would leave. "With myself and Steven being the more senior lads, we rallied around and spoke to the squad. "I wasn't that worried - I thought we would get through to the end of the season and see where we stand. "We got everyone together and I said to the lads: 'I don't
expect anyone to walk out that door.' "Not one of them did, because we were a group. "We got through to the end of the season and it went round the community. "It started being in the newspapers, and one thing led to another and we were getting hundreds through the gate. "It was brilliant for us to play in front of that, and we pushed on from there. "We didn't know that much about behind the scenes in the grand scheme of things - our job was to just go there and play football. "It was only the season after when we were bringing better quality in and letting players go where we realised the club was back on track.
"The new owners got involved straight away in the summer with painting the changing rooms and stripping back the clubhouse. "The clubhouse looked like a social club, so they developed it into something for local residents as well. "There were big changes but the club done them in the right timeframe to take them into the new era." The South Tyneside side entered a new dawn, and a rich vein of form in early 2018 saw The Hornets promoted back into Northern League Division One. "That season was good - you could see where the club was wanting to go. "You could see the aspirations, and it was obvious they
were wanting to climb the leagues. "For me, it was getting to grips with the fact that was going to be my last year at Hebburn. "We added some great players to the squad - it was nice to play alongside Paul Chow. "I had already told Scott and the rest of the boys at the start of that season it would be our last together. "I had made my mind up - when you're following the model the club were of progressing, it's likely better players are brought in. "Where they were wanted to go, they needed better quality than ourselves, and I was cool with it. "Scott wanted me to stay since I was one of the long-
serving players, but I didn't want to get involved with it. "I done what I needed to do, and it was excellent to end it all on a high note. "On a personal note, playing at Hebburn was my best time in football by a country mile. "That's from the lads, the management, the volunteers, supporters everyone. "They're people I still talk to today - we have a lads' group chat and we meet up every now and then. "Being at Hebburn Town for them five years, after playing at Reyrolles, was fantastic - it was if I came home. "I scored a lot of goals and preformed at my best. "Scott named me captain in my third season there, seeing
me as one of the leaders. "I missed out on the league's top scorer by Paul Brayson one year who had 52 goals, but I collected loads of end of season awards at the club so there are no complaints." The striker made the switch north in June 2018, linking up with Ashington. "It's been different the main difference has been I'm getting older! "I'm playing with new people in new places. "I joined Ashington for a year but it was a funny one. "They brought a few lads in but they lost the money after Christmas and a lot of players walked. "We had a good team, but that was a difficult season. "I was going to hang my boots up, but
Barrie Smith who was at South Shields rang me in the November and asked what I was doing. "He took me to Esh Winning for a year and a half, but then the pandemic hit. "Scott joined Davy Bell at Jarrow, and when he called me it was a no-brainer. "I'm playing with a lot of old Hebburn lads again, and hopefully we can
keep on going for another few years. "I still look at Hebburn as my club. "Not being from the North East originally, I see that as home. "I watched the Vase final at home and I was over the moon! "My daughter is eight, she spent a lot of time at Hebburn and she associates me playing for them. "I'll always have a soft spot for Hebburn, no matter
where they are. "The squad have done great, and hopefully they can keep progressing on and off the pitch."

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD
We take a look at our step three opponents, Warrington Town. Warrington were formed in 1949 as Stockton Heath and for their first four seasons played in the Warrington and District League, before moving into the Mid Cheshire League. During their time in the MCL, they won the 1960/61 league championship and three consecutive league cups during the 1950s. England World Cup winner Roger Hunt briefly played for them during this time before joining Liverpool in 1958 and is the most famous player in the club’s history. The name change to Warrington Town happened in 1961 and four years later they moved to their present home, Cantilever Park. Following a spell in the North West Counties League The Yellows went up to the NPL in 1990 and
28
achieved promotion to the Premier Division in 2016, having won the NPL Challenge Cup the previous season. They were agonisingly close to promotion to the National League North in 2018/19 when they overcame Nantwich Town and South Shields to win the play-offs but still had to see off King’s Lynn in the super play-off final, a game which they lost 3-2 after extra time. Warrington, who beat Exeter City in the 2014/15 Emirates FA Cup before losing to Gateshead, currently sit fifth in the league above with 28 points from 16 games.
THE INSIDE INFO Warrington Town's Media Manager, James Gordon, explains his involvement with The Yellows. I approached one of the Warrington directors after just starting my own business back in 2010. I went along to a game and then ended up doing some work with the then Chairman. I've been doing the match reports and matchday social for the majority of the last decade, including the brilliant Emirates FA Cup run in 2014; did the turnstile for a few years and these days do everything from media, marketing, commercial and communications. The season has been steady. We are there or thereabouts in the league, though there have been some disappointing performances. I don't tend to dwell on those ones too much - the big killers have been five dropped points at home, when we conceded a
96th minute equaliser against Buxton, and then threw away a 2-0 lead against Basford United. It's only early days of course, but those five points would have had us right on the tails of South Shields. After an early exit in the FA Cup to Marine, a run in the FA Trophy is important to the club this season. Obviously the money up for grabs is a big positive. Striker Jordan Buckley is in terrific form for us, but Hebburn are an unknown quantity, not least because they knocked out Rylands! We've had some tough battles over the years in the North East - I don't think any of us are taking this game for granted.

KEY MEN
THE GAFFER
SHOT-STOPPER
ROCK SOLID
Hailing from Liverpool, the long-serving Yellows' boss has managed in the National League.
The 21-year-old, formerly of Liverpool, signed for Paul Carden's side in July. The goalkeeper, previously a regular at The Reds' U23s, came off the bench upfront with 15 to go in a preseason win at Tranmere Rovers for Jurgen Klopp's side in July 2019. He then featured as a substitute in front of 25,000 fans at Bradford City, before being included in a 28-man squad to tour USA. He spent a stint on loan at Marine in 2020, prior to moving to USA in favour of FC Malaga City last season.
Warrington's skipper, Roberts carries a wealth of experience at the age of 38. The Crewe Alexandra graduate made six appearances in the Championship before seven loan spells saw him move to Northwich Victoria and Accrington Stanley. Making 236 appearances, he captained Stevenage to back-to-back promotions, before leading Fleetwood to League One in 2014. Following two years with Cambridge United and a season with Forest Green Rovers, Roberts moved to The Yellows in 2018.
Paul Carden
A product of Blackpool, the 42-yearold donned the shirt for Rochdale, Doncaster, Peterborough and Burton Albion has a midfielder, while also making around 150 appearances for Chester City. He enjoyed three years with Cambridge United, becoming caretaker manager on occasion, before beating relegation with Southport in 2015 and becoming assistant at Tranmere.
Daniel Atherton
Mark Roberts
MIDFIELD MAESTRO
Jay Harris
A Buildbase FA Trophy winner in 2013, the exEverton prospect joined Warrington in the summer. Harris played 73 times in the fourth tier with Accrington Stanley before a year with Chester City. The 34-year-old dropped into nonleague in 2010 with Wrexham, reaching the Trophy final twice, before moving to Tranmere Rovers in 2015. He helped the club achieve back-to-back play-off successes, and returned to Wrexham in 2019 after five months at Macclesfield.
DANGER MAN
Jordan Buckley The physical forward has scored nine in 14 appearances this season. Buckley caught the eye at Irlam, earning a move to FC United of Manchester in September 2019, scoring a winner against Warrington Town shortly after. The Yellows snapped him up in January 2020, alongside Hebburn Town Juniors graduate Will Harris on loan. Buckley briefly appeared in the Welsh Premier League for Flint Town at the end of last season alongside a host of Warrington players following a premature campaign in England.
ONE TO WATCH Matty Grivosti
The skilful teenager came off the bench to bag a brace last week at Grantham Town. The playmaker put pen to paper for Paul Carden's side in the summer in time for his first season of senior football. The 18-year-old, who plied his trade at Robbie Fowler's Academy, appeared for Oxford United's first-team in pre-season. In 13 appearances, six of which starts, Grivosti has the found the net five times from attacking midfield for Warrington.

FROM THE ARCHIVES Kieran Archer relives a thrilling 3-2 victory at The Green Energy Sports Ground in 2019. A Graeme Armstrong wondergoal secured revenge for the Buildbase FA Vase exit against West Auckland. It was the sides' first meeting since the 2018/19 Vase fifth round heartbreak. Ben Dibb-Fuller opened the scoring when he got on the end of an Armstrong through ball before rounding 'keeper Thomas Flynn and finishing into an empty goal. But West managed to level within a quarter of an hour when David Dowson smashed into the top right corner from just inside the box. Hebburn regained the lead before half-time when Lewis Suddick squared across the six-yard box for Michael Richardson to sarcastically hammer into an empty net. And the Hornets extended their advantage within minutes of the restart
through the goal of the afternoon. Dan Groves played a lobbed ball to the edge of the box where Armstrong added a looping lob on the half-volley over the despairing Flynn. West pulled one back five minutes from time when some hopeless Hornets defending from Anthony Bell’s cross gifted Adam Mitchell the opportunity to volley home. FOOTBALLING FIRSTS We go down memory lane with recentlysigned Norwegian attacker, David Allasan. First memory? Playing for Newcastle United when I was around 11. First inspiration? Watching the Liverpool v Milan Champions League final on TV in 2005. For players, the likes of Messi and Ronaldo. First pair of boots? The red and purple mercurials. First shirt? Probably a Man United kit! First manager? Graham Alexander, now at Motherwell, when I was at Scunthorpe United.
First senior game? Against Lincoln United for Scunthorpe in a friendly. First goal? It would've been in Romania last year, on my debut. First celebration? I didn't really celebrate to be honest, I just ran into the corner! First cup? When I was at South Shields, I won a cup with their U19s in around 2018.

INSIDE HEBBURN We talk to our Assistant Secretary, David Thomas, about his affiliation with The Hornets. I've been involved with Hebburn for quite a while, watching them with my dad when it was Rayrolles. One presentation evening at Hebburn Buffs in 2015, I spoke to Stephen Rutherford about holding an event for the Juniors and before I knew it, I was coaching my daughter's team and was part of the Juniors committee. When the senior club took off, I was approached again by Stephen in July 2019 to work alongside David Patterson. There isn't any club better to learn from in my opinion, and it's been a pleasure to work alongside Stephen, David, Vin Pearson and the rest of the committee. My favourite memory is a no-
brainer: the Buildbase FA Vase final. Also up there is the second year of coaching my daughter's team becoming the first Hebburn Town Honey's team to win a league title, finishing unbeaten. I'm excited for new memories to come! I haven't got a clue how today's game will go. Warrington will come into it as the favourites, but we can compete with anyone on our day. Hopefully we can finish the game without anymore injuries and get a good crowd in.
