THE GAFFER'S NOTES KEVIN BOLAM

GOOD EVENING EVERYONE AND WELCOME BACK TO THE GREEN ENERGY SPORTS GROUND FOR TODAY'S VISIT OF BRIGHOUSE TOWN. I thought the first half performance on Saturday was good - the bonus is the three points. The second half wasn't good enough. We can't keep missing the chances we're creating because we're keeping teams in the game. I shook hands with Lincoln's gaffer and he said it should've been 7-1, which sums it up. It carries our run on though, and we've got to take positives from it which we will. It was an emotional day, with the situation

at the club regarding Danny Carson's dad. Not only is Danny a top footballer, but he's a top kid - it's a pleasure having him here. Ideally, what I wanted to do, was give him the credit he deserved and take him off for the last couple of minutes, for what he done in memory of his dad. I wanted to give him a round of applause, but he's too important to us so we had to keep him out there due to how tight it was. He's a one off whether he's playing on the street with a bunch

of kids or he's at Wembley in the FA Vase final, you'll never see another Danny. When we're at home, at times I think we're a little bit edgy and nervy. I can feel it, someone is going to get it off us shortly. All we want to do now is keep the momentum going and climb the league, because we feel we should be at the top end of it. At times, little things have gone against us. At the weekend, it was our poor finishing and lack of discipline that kept the opposition in it.

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM TOM DEVITT

HELLO AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S DIGITAL PROGRAMME BEFORE ANOTHER BIG LEAGUE TEST. On Saturday, it was a pleasing first half showing where we limited their chances. We just about got through it in the second half, we were pretty poor to be honest. We stopped playing and gave them an entry back into the game. At the end of the day, we got the win over the line, which is all that mattered. It was brilliant to see a good crowd there - they really helped us throughout the 90. It's like we're away from home every week, so to play

back at The Green Energy Sports Ground was great. We're wanting to move past Saturday and focus onto today's game. The fact Brighouse lost to Shildon will give us some confidence, but to be honest, every game in this league will be difficult. You've got to turn up every week and put in a shift. It doesn't matter who we play, if we just turn up and apply ourselves correctly then hopefully we can pick up more wins. We started slowly results wise - the

performances have always been there or thereabouts. In the changing rooms, we knew we'd eventually get the results our performances have warranted. It was only a matter of time before it clicked, and it's nice to be a few games unbeaten now long may it continue.

NOTICEBOARD Central-midfielder, Damen Mullen, recently joined Ashington on a short-term loan spell. The 33-year-old linked up with The Colliers at the end of September on a onemonth period. The former Blyth Spartans and Morpeth Town man arrived at The Green Energy Sports Ground in June 2020, making 14 appearances last season. After starting against West Auckland Town in the JR Cleator Cup, Mullen was ruled out for the start of this campaign due to injury. Having recently returned to full fitness, Mullen joins Ashington until October 30 in order to gain sharpness and game time. He has made three starts thus far for Ian Skinner's side, as well as one appearance from the bench.

We wish Mullen the very best for the rest of his duration with the Ebac Northern League Division One outfit. Meanwhile, Kevin Bolam has registered Liam Murray with the first-team. The 20-year-old playmaker came through the ranks at Hebburn Town Juniors and Newcastle United, before beginning the campaign with Jarrow. Murray returned to The Green Energy Sports Ground with Gary Henry's U23 side, and was named amongst the substitutes for our Buildbase FA Trophy game at Warrington Rylands.

Kevin Bolam's side secured a third consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon in front of a spectacular crowd. Opening the game on eight minutes, Martin fired towards goal from 20-yards, with his effort taking a deflection off the head of Owen Sheriff before hitting the net. With 19 on the clock, Bell and Martin linked up, but the latter was unable to find his second from inside the box as he hooked over. On the 26 mark, Tom Potter raced in and chose to play Martin, who went wide oneon-one. On 36 minutes, a Hebburn counter-attack was executed perfectly, with Bell smashing into the top corner to make it 2-0. Josh Nichol took down last-

man Dylan Archer, with the referee showing red on 67 minutes. It should've been 3-0 with 18 to go, as Bell drove a cross into Archer, who hacked over from only a few yards out. On the 77 mark, George Asplin had a chance at the back stick for the visitors, but his shot was met with a solid stop from Mark Foden. Two minutes later, Rob Smith found the net for Sam Wilkinson's side with a driven strike from outside the area. Seconds later, Dan Groves' cross found a free Amar Purewal at the back post, who nodded wide at closerange, before Purewal missed a similar chance on the volley.

PLAYER'S PERSPECTIVE Hebburn Town captain, Dan Groves, gives his verdict following Saturday's 2-1 victory. The right-back returned to the starting 11 after missing our shootout win against Warrington Rylands. "I thought we did really well," the former Darlington man stated. "We were in pretty much every time we got the ball. "In the second half, we dropped off and our tempo dropped, which wasn't good enough. "Even when they went down to 10 men, they were probably the better side. "We've seen it out and got the three points at the end of the day." Groves assessed the run of form, before previewing tonight's fixture against Brighouse Town. "I think we've been there

or thereabouts, it was just silly little mistakes. "It's been time ticking, but now that we've turned that corner, we're on a good run. "We've got a good group and I think we can push on in the league. "It was great for the Carson family - it's been a pleasure to play with Danny and fair play to him for playing today. "I hope they enjoyed it because it was for them really. "On Tuesday, it's the same again - to set our standards out and hopefully come away with another three points."

#1 STEVEN HUBERY

HEBBURN HEROES: STEVEN HUBERY We catch up with former Hornets and current Jarrow shot-stopper, Steven Hubery. The 35-year-old was instrumental as the club achieved promotion to the ninth tier. The 'keeper arrived at The Green Energy Sports Ground back in 2015 from South Tyneside

neighbours, South Shields. "I was at Shields just as the money came in and they brought a lot bighitters in during pre-season," Hubery explained. "In amongst all that, they brought a few 'keepers in

and I had went on holiday, so I got pushed down the pecking order. "I waited until the start of the season, but it was fairly apparent that I wasn't going to be in the manager's plans.

"At the time, Scott Oliver was recruiting former South Shields lads at Hebburn decent, reputable players. "Myself, Chris Locke, Chris Feasey and James Talbot all moved over at the time. "The squad when I first joined was very close-knit, nobody was on great money, everyone was there for the right reasons. "It was a committee-ran club with minimal changes to the squad - everybody was in it together. "Me and my little group of lads would travel up from Hartlepool, and we would mingle in with all the local lads. "It's strange how it worked out, but to be honest, it was probably one of my

happiest times in football. "As I say, everybody got on well and were enjoying themselves. "The club wasn't what it is now of course - the clubhouse was old and worn, we were getting 50 through the gate, the budget was tiny. "We loved playing under Scotty though - the football was good and we could give anybody a game on our day. "We used to finish higher mid-table in the first couple of seasons when I first arrived, which wasn't too bad. "The club was relying heavily on local sponsors and gates, which weren't that high. "It got to the point where we had £500 left in the bank. "Myself and Channon [North]

were the senior players at the club, and I had a business myself. "Scott asked me to listen into some committee meetings, so myself and Peter Kirkham sat in and tried to give a little bit of direction. "We set the club social media accounts up to raise exposure of the situation and appeal for sponsors. "Myself and Channon spoke to the lads and asked if they could play for free until the end of the season, expecting one or two to leave. "They all done it and helped reduce the costs, before we got games with the likes of Newcastle United's U23s to raise funds. "Local people pulled together to increase

19

sponsorship and the gates. "I don't know how many people knew this, but Kevin Bolam helped supply us with new strips. "Very quickly, everyone was working together to save our football club. "Before we knew it, a new chairman came in and everything changed for the better. "For whatever reason, people love playing at Hebburn, so it's always been a club to have the potential to do well. "If I'm honest, when the new owners came in, I don't think the squad knew too much about it. "We certainly didn't have the largest budget in the league. but we wanted a real push for promotion.

"We had a really good spine so didn't need to add too many new players. "Just a bit of quality like Mechack Kanda and Paul Chow came in, and that was probably the difference. "We finished second - our attendances were increasing and the younger lads were kicking on. "We had a young kid from nowhere in Jack Donaghy, people were wanting to see how he developed. "That full season was extraordinary and I loved celebrating with the boys afterwards." The Hornets were on the rise, returning to the Northern League Division One for the first time in four years. They marked the campaign with a second-placed finish, however it

would see the beginning of the end for Hubery. "It was quite frustrating," the goalkeeper revealed. "We were playing three games a week and I needed a hernia operation, where I'd miss four months. "It was when we went on a massive run towards the back end of the season, and I was just managing on painkillers. "I came back in preseason and it was as if it healed itself, but the operation was already booked. "They brought another 'keeper in, and fortunately for me, he didn't have the best of starts so I managed to force myself back into the team for a few games. "With us improving constantly, the club

were always on the lookout to add more quality into the team. "Andrew Jenninson came in - he was a great lad and we had a strong relationship, but he played the majority of games. "I came in and out for cup and FA Vase games, but when we were knocked out the Vase, I decided to move on to get more games. "I was loyal to Hebburn, I had been there for four years - I didn't want to let Scott down. "I waited until the Vase run was over and we only had a few months left of the season before I went." Hubery departed South Tyneside in February 2019, with Northallerton Town capturing his signature. "It was the business

end of Northallerton's season. "They had an ex-pro in goal, but he was about to go on holiday to America. "It was a long way away from Hebburn, but it was only for a month to help them out. "They were pushing for promotion and had a cup final to play in, so it was great for me. "They got promoted in third and won the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup, which fell on the day Hebburn's end-ofseason do was on. "I ended up playing in the final, then racing back up to see all the lads again. "From there, I ended up at Whitley Bay which didn't really work out - they were another club in transition. "I then stopped

playing for a short while, before Dave Bell got in touch with me, who was my assistant in the very early days at Hebburn. "He wanted to do better things with Jarrow, and he had quite a few old Hebburn lads there. "Last season, it was stop-start so we didn't really achieve any momentum and we felt we underachieved. "Scott made himself available to come in, then even more old lads joined. "It's a similar situation to Hebburn, we want to enjoy ourselves and not earn loads of money. "It's a case of playing out the last few years of our careers with people who we have fond memories with. "We're probably a little bit short of

being able to get promotion, but we're getting a decent gate and everybody's enjoying it." Hubery finished by hailing The Hornets current set-up, as well as speaking of FA Vase victory. "I still kind of feel part of it - Hebburn has a long-lasting effect on you. "There's a lot of good people there and I'm friends with

a couple of boys. "When the club won the Vase, I was sat in Jarrow's clubhouse with all the ex-lads, cheering them on. "We would've loved to have been there if fans were allowed so that was a bit gutting. "I'm just jealous we weren't a part of it! "I always look out for the club's results to see how they keep progressing and I always try to visit the

ground when I'm not playing. "It takes you back to the hard times, so it's mental to see everything now. "Every time I go to a game, there's always something different added to the matchday experience. "The full club is heading in the right direction and I wish them all the best for the future."

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD

We take a look at tonight's opponents, Vill Powell's Brighouse Town. Brighouse were formed in 1963 as a works team for Blakeborough Valve Company, before adopting their current name 25 years later after the company's demise. They originally played in the Huddersfield Works League, winning the title four times during their 12-year tenure, but moved into the West Riding County League in 1975. In the season following their name change, Town secured promotion from Division One to the Premier Division and went on to win that title five times in little over a decade, as well as winning the West Riding Challenge Cup in 1992. The 2008/09 season brought promotion to the NCEL Division One with a further promotion to the

28

Premier Division in 2010. Their most recent promotion was in the 2013/14 season, which saw Brighouse reach step four for the first time in the club’s history. In the 2018/19 season, Brighouse won the play-offs but were denied promotion as only five of the seven winners from step four went up, based on their points per game ratio. At the time of writing, Vill Powell's side sit tenth in the league with 13 points from 10 games. They are unbeaten in six home games but are yet to win a league game on the road.

THE INSIDE INFO Brighouse Town's Media Manager, Damian Wales, outlines the visitors' start to the campaign. I've been involved with the club since the start of 2017 so this is my fifth season involved. I started out in the U21s, doing their media for one year, then took over the role of Media Manager in 2018. I have a small but very good media team who all do their jobs brilliantly to ensure that our media is up there with the best in this league and the league above. If there was a word to describe our start to the season, it would be frustrating which may come as a shock, but we've had a lot of games where we should've converted draws into wins and if we did, we'd be up near the top where we deserve to be. Luck just hasn't been on our side with decisions given by officials and the ball not

landing in the back of the net. We've got a lot of quality on the pitch so it would be hard to pick a standout player to you. Danny Racchi when involved has shown his higher league experience in the middle of the park, Tom Haigh always performs to his best in every game and Laurence Sorhaindo up top is a threat with his pace and stature. We've just played against Marske and Shildon so the travelling hasn't been great. North East teams are always hard to play against, they fight for every ball and don't stop working so it will be a tough game but one I'm very much looking forward to - I'll say a 1-0 Brighouse win.

KEY MEN

THE GAFFER Vill Powell

A former striker, Powell played for Derry City, Worskop Town, Grays Athletic and Havant & Waterlooville. His most prolific season was in 2003/04, where the FA Trophy winner netted 73 times for Retford United. A former teammate of Jamie Vardy, the Sheffield Wednesday product moved into coaching as he joined the backroom staff at Sheffield FC, before managing Rotherham United's U15s. Powell then became a coach at Harrogate Town in the sixth tier before taking reigns at Brighouse.

SHOT-STOPPER

ROCK SOLID

Brett Souter

Harrison Beeden

The Rotherham-born 'keeper has kept three clean sheets from his 11 appearances at Town.

The agile 19-year-old returned to Brighouse following a stint on loan in 2019. Hailing from Sheffield, Beeden rose through the ranks at Thorncliffe and Rotherham United, where he joined Brighouse on loan in November 2019. The former Chesterfield U18 and U21s skipper, who appeared in friendlies for The Spireites' first-team, penned a permanent deal with Brighouse in June 2020. The centre-back, who scored at Shildon on Saturday, earned Town's September Player of the Month award.

The former Shaw Lane and Sheffield man was Hemsworth Miners Welfare's skipper in last season's Emirates FA Cup clash at Hebburn, having joined in July 2020. Souter also spent several seasons as Ossett Albion and Town's number one, winning the 2017 Player of the Year award for the former. The experienced shotstopper joined Brighouse in February, penning a deal until 2022.

Elliot Harrison

DANGER MAN

Laurence Sorhaindo

ONE TO WATCH

The versatile midfielder from Huddersfield has impressed in 11 outings this season. Harrison spent time with Halifax Town as a youngster, joining Mossley on loan in March 2017 before penning permanently. After 76 appearances for The Lilywhites, Harrison moved to Trafford, prior to a stint with Ossett United. The playmaker linked up with Vill Powell's men at the back end of April, and has donned the shirt alongside the likes of former Bury man, Danny Racchi.

A product of Bradford City, the lethal 24-yearold has bagged four goals this campaign.

The attack-minded midfielder, born in Leeds, cam through the ranks at Huddersfield. The 23-year-old spent three months on loan at Clyde during the 2017/18 campaign, before returning in July 2018 following his release from The Terriers. After a year with the Scottish side, Boyle made the switch to Thackley, where he departed in January 2020 in favour of Brighouse. Boyle is one of two players to make 12 appearances for Town this season, alongside left-back Michael Starkey.

MIDFIELD MAESTRO

Previously of Campion, Sorhaindo found the net 12 times from 22 games for Silsden in the 2019/20 season in the ninth tier. His run of form earned him a move to Brighouse in June 2020, where he made 10 appearances in his debut year, scoring his sole goal against Dunston. The marksman has played 11 times this season, with his last goal coming in a 2-1 win against Stocksbridge Park Steels.

FROM THE ARCHIVES Kieran Archer recaps a thrilling victory at The Green Energy Sports Ground 12 months ago. A capped crowd of 150 saw Kevin Bolam's men come from behind to secure all three points. Hebburn Town regularly played out tough battles with Sunderland RCA in the Northern League era, and October 2020’s 3-2 home victory was no different. Both sides saw chanced go begging in an entertaining but ultimately goalless first half. Hebburn had been on top but it was RCA who took the lead through Jonathan Carr’s close-range finish. The Hornets hit back almost immediately through Cedwyn Scott’s near post finish on the end of a Michael Richardson through ball. Scott’s second was remarkably similar to his first, this time Louis Storey playing the through ball before the striker cut onto his right and

found the inside of the near post. A brilliant flick around an RCA defender gave Richardson space in front of goal and he made no mistake in slotting home. The final few minutes were made a lot more tense when referee David Pill awarded RCA a penalty for Mark Foden’s challenge on Ryan Leonard. Dylan Elliott confidently smashed home the penalty but it would prove the final act of the afternoon. Hebburn Town XI: Foden, Groves, Donaghy, Carson, Lough, Storey, Spence, Martin (Purewal, 59'), Mason (Richardson, 59'), Potter, Armstrong (Taylor, 86')

FOOTBALLING FIRSTS In-form defender, Danny Carson, reflects on his journey on the pitch with a number of career memories. First memory? When I was six-years-old, playing football down at Boldon CA. First inspiration? Ronaldinho, what a player! Roberto Carlos as well - the Brazilians. In my time, they were the best footballers about. First pair of boots? Yellow Umbro Specials, we used to call them banana boots. First shirt? I think it was a Newcastle shirt, but I remember really wanting a Tottenham shirt because I really liked it. First manager? Gary Rowell, who is now a scout for Sunderland. He was excellent and one of the best managers I've ever had - he took me from U6 to U18s at Boldon CA.

First senior game? For Boldon CA, who are in the Northern League now, in the Wearside League. I went to Jarrow Roofing straight after. First goal? I never score - I can't even remember my last! On a Sunday morning probably. First cup? I won the league with Morpeth Town and lifted the Northumbria Senior Cup at Wembley.

U23S SECTION Our U23s boss, Gary Henry, reflects on Hebburn's second-string's start to the season. The Hornets defeated West Moor & Jesmond 2-0 on Saturday in the Northern Football Alliance First Division. The result proceeded a 4-0 victory at Rhyope CW U23s in the Durham FA Minor Cup last week. "The league table's not looking the best from our point of view," Henry honestly assessed. "We've got a game in hand but it's been quite stop-start, with lads being away. "Performances have been good generally, and the results are starting to pick. "The 4-0 win probably flattered Ryhope - we scored three in the first 20 minutes. "We've got South Moor Juniors at home in the next round, who are quite close to Ryhope in their league table. We've love to get back to the

final of the competition and reclaim it, after we harshly lost it this year." One of the standout performers for the side is Robbie Gateshill, who has netted four goals in the last two fixtures. The ex-Rotherham United academy attacker, who made his debut for Kevin Bolam's side in August away to Ossett United, also picked up the MOTM award at the weekend. "He's been working hard and got his chance with the firstteam," Henry added. "He's worked hard in training and is creating chances, and he's finding the net himself as well. "He took his goal well on Saturday, and hopefully he can keep progressing with us." 41

INSIDE HEBBURN We chat to Hebburn Town supporter, volunteer and committee member, Ray Straughan. I used to be into classic cars, but they've kind of moved on so I needed something else to do. I used to go to Newcastle United games every now and then, but it was a pain to get tickets and things. I went to Newcastle Falcons as well, but I lived quite close to Hebburn's ground so I used to pass it quite often. I had a look on Facebook for their upcoming games, went along and really enjoyed it. When the games finished, myself and Julie Stokoe would clear up in the stands and pick up the rubbish. Julie then started helping out with the changing rooms, whereas I put things like some fencing and coat hangers up.

We started helping out further, joined the committee, and the club then took us to Wembley. It was an amazing experience and something I'm very thankful for. We never saw the club when it was about to die, we started coming just after, but seeing the developments around the place is excellent. I'm currently helping by welcoming guests in the newly-built lounge at the front of the ground. We love it, it's as simple as that, and that's why we come every week.
